Dear Fellow Seletarians I am honored to have been your Chairman for the past five years, having been appointed since 2016 and elected in 2019. It had been an exciting and eventful period. There were many changes on and off the golf course; and not least of all an unexpected COVID-19 pandemic which forced change, reality and misery upon every aspect of the economy and our lifestyle.

THANK YOU FOR THE SUPPORT I am fortunate to have the support and cooperation of all concerned. Collectively & together we walked this journey – renewing our land lease for another 20 years; building a new golf course; converting the Club to a fully elected Chairman/MC model; opening the time capsule; and refreshing our F&B facilities like the Tavern, Terrace and Seletar Room. We also improved some of our other facilities such as the tennis courts and the gym; and gradually brought back social activities. The outcome today is an award-winning golf course and the return of members to enjoy the camaraderie, food and drinks at our F&B facilities, all while abiding the safe distancing requirements. A year ago, with no certainty of when COVID-19 will subside, we were staring at a worst-case-scenario that will put our financial position

under extreme stress. Today, we have much more financial comfort and buffer to weather the storm (hopefully there will be no storm).

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING The Annual General Meeting (AGM) is around the corner. As soon as preparatory work is complete, the Management will send out the notice of AGM with a target date no later than 31st July 2021. This forthcoming AGM will mark two years since the election of office holders in 2019. While there is a good case for continuity, it is equally convincing that some changes and new faces would be good for the Club. Whichever way, I am certain that leading up to this event, the Tavern will be kept busy as members exchange views over drinks. Meanwhile, stay safe and healthy. I look forward to catching up with members when I am at the Club.

CHEAH KIM TECK Chairman

Officially sealed during the Club’s opening ceremony in 1995 by then-Chairman Mr Cheong Quee Wah, the time capsule was opened on 20 March 2021 by incumbent Chairman Cheah Kim Teck. The memorable event, which was originally scheduled to be held on 5 April 2020 on the occasion of the Club’s 25th Anniversary at our current location, had to be postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and circuit breaker. In accordance with safe management measures, the opening of the time capsule was broadcast live on Zoom for members to be a part of the historic moment. The items preserved in the time capsule included documents such as the club constitution, letters of compliments and complaints, photographs, and club paraphernalia such as club jacket, club crockery and President Ong’s 1994 scorecard. The purpose of the time capsule is to capture the essence and life of the Club in 1995 and to see how much members’ interests, management style, activities, events, articles, facilities, equipment would have changed in form and substance 25 years later. Our collective memories make us, and the opening of the time capsule was indeed a meaningful blast of nostalgia from the past!

Seletar Reborn! Seletar Reborn, our planned celebration for the reopening of the new golf course had to be shelved last year due to the pandemic. Nevertheless, it was made even more meaningful and significant this year as it was held on the same day as the opening of the time capsule on 20 March 2021, and we also took the opportunity to celebrate our being awarded the Best Renovated Golf Course in Asia Pacific in the 2020 Global Golf Awards. We were honoured to have Ms Angela Raymond, President of Asia Pacific Golf Group and Mr Mike Sebastian, CEO of Asia Pacific Golf Group grace us with their presence. The afternoon downpour did not dampen the jubilant mood of the golfers, and more than half of the flights pressed on to complete the friendly game. We would like to thank everyone for their support, especially our longstanding sponsors Daimler and Cycle & Carriage. To more great golfing ahead!

SELETAR JUNIOR MEMBERS

Come Up Tops

Text by Seletar member Kuk Hun Yi

Seletar junior members Shang Yu and Jillian Kuk came up tops in the Girls ‘A’ and ‘B’ divisions respectively, in the third leg of the HSBC Youth Golf Challenge (YGC), while Seletar junior members Justin Kuk and Shang Yu won the men’s and women’s division of SGA’s National Ranking Game (NRG). The HSBC YGC and NRG was held concurrently between 16 to 18 March 2021 on Seletar Country Club’s newly renovated course. Given the suspension of tournaments in 2020 due to the pandemic, and with the event being held on Seletar’s newly renovated championship course, these events had been eagerly anticipated by participants. The newly renovated Seletar course did not disappoint with its challenging par 3s, and newly designed dog leg holes 3 and 15, requiring insightful course management and precise shot-making to navigate. Coupled with the multi-tiered greens and blustery wind conditions, the new Seletar course proved a worthy challenge to all the juniors during the week.

In the HSBC YGC Girls ‘A’ division, Shang Yu overcame a 3-stroke deficit after the second day of play by carding a stellar 2 under 70 round on the third day to overtake fellow competitor Samantha Dixon and win by 1 stroke. In the NRG field, Shang Yu overcame a 6-stroke deficit after the second day to win by 3 shots over second placed Aloysa Atienza on the third day. At the end of the tournaments, Shang Yu carded an outstanding 3-day aggregate score of 223 (79, 74, 70). In the HSBC YGC Girls ‘B’ division, it was a closely fought match between Seletar junior members Angel Lim and Jillian Kuk. Despite trailing by 2 shots after the second day, Jillian was able to catch up and eventually win by 3 strokes, carding a 3-day aggregate score of 240 (77, 84, 79). In the Men’s division of the NRG, Seletar junior member Justin Kuk was the only player in the field to play a cumulative under par score by carding an aggregate 2 under score of 214 (69, 74, 71), allowing him to prevail by 4 strokes over his nearest challenger.

Congratulations to our Seletar juniors Justin Kuk (left) and Shang Yu (right) for emerging as the National Ranking Game (NRG)'s Men's Winner and Women's Winner respectively.

Other notable Seletar junior members’ podium results were: • Eng Wei Jin – 3rd position in the HSBC YGC Boys ‘A’ division with aggregate score of 226 (79, 75, 72); and • Ethan Lim – 3rd position in the HSBC YGC Boys ‘B’ division with aggregate score of 235 (81, 76, 78) In a thank you message to Seletar, SGA High Performance Manager Joshua Ho stated “SGA truly appreciates Seletar’s support in making these events a success and wishes to thank especially Captain Phua Hua Seng, Deputy General Manager Chan Lee Hock, the golfing operations team and all the marshals for their unstinting support, without which these events could not be held. The players really appreciated playing on Seletar’s newly renovated championship course which was in pristine condition, and the firm greens and tricky pin positions tested every facet of the juniors' games.” It is really encouraging to see Seletar juniors at the forefront of Singapore high performance golf, and we wish them the very best for the future.

7 MONTHS &

Going Strong!

What keeps our Gotong Royong volunteers coming back week after week to do the backbreaking work of weeding under the scorching sun? First put forth by Captain Phua Hua Seng in October 2020 as an initiative to restore the pristine beauty of the golf course following a manpower shortage and infiltration of weeds, Seletarians have heeded the Club’s call and are still going strong even today, with Vice-Captain Ho Juan Heng and Danny Lee now co-leading the group. Mindful of the safe management measures in place and out in the great outdoors, our volunteers dutifully keep their distance. We speak to some of our regular volunteers who form part of a core group of about 15 members to find out their thoughts after some 7 months and what drives them. IT’S ABOUT COMMITMENT When Linda Gan and her husband Michael Gan first signed up for Gotong Royong, they mistakenly thought that they would just be helping to fill sand. Even though it was not what they had expected, the couple decided to give it a shot since they had already committed to it. One session led to the next, and they have now already been doing this for close to 7 months! Already in her seventies, the resourceful Linda even bought a contraption that helps her to weed while standing, as the constant bending and squatting can take its toll. Linda considers herself more efficient at weeding now, and the tranquility of the course never fails to bring her peace even after all this while.

or less bags, which is a very good thing. Such is his level of investment and interest that he would even go back and google to gain a better understanding of the weeds, pollination process and the likes. He also better appreciates the tough work of the course maintenance staff, having been through the backbreaking work himself.

PROPELLED BY CURIOSITY 60-year-old Henry Lim considers himself one of the youngest in the group, a testament to the sheer feat of the volunteers’ tenacity. He has seen vast improvements to the course, he said, sharing that while they used to fill about 20 bags of weeds, they now only fill 10

someone who takes the weeding sessions as exercise, he has certainly seen improvements in himself, such as being able to squat for 3 minutes compared to 3 seconds previously. It may sound easy, but it is really not.

ACTION SPEAKS LOUDER THAN WORDS No obligations. No reasons. This is volunteer work, Willie Soh says in a matter-of-fact way, and there is no need to motivate people to come, nor does he wish to proclaim the supposed merits of doing this. If people want to come, they will. For him personally, he enjoys coming for the sessions, and given how regularly he sees the rest of the members, he has naturally made friends with some of them. When time and schedule permits, they would sometimes have coffee after the sessions.

Our membe rs helping ou t alongside ou r maintenan ce crew.

THE SATISFACTION OF SEEING RESULTS Mr Lim, or KG Lim as he prefers to be named, is serious about weeding. It seemed to him a logical and sensible thing to partake in. While it is all too easy to comment about the state of the course, it would be more helpful if every member pitch in to help in any small way. He said, “It is very satisfying to see the improvements.” Over time, his body has also ‘warmed up’ and become more accustomed to the tedious work. Gone are the days of having body aches after the weeding sessions. Now, he says he feels fine after, and can still golf the next day.

RELENTLESS ENTHUSIASM AND DEDICATION When you start giving nicknames to the different types of weeds, you know you may be in too deep. But that is what our members did. Michael Lim commented, “The core group has a lot of enthusiasm and dedication.” They are also in it for the long haul. As long as they are needed, they will continue to play their part. For

WORK WITHIN YOUR MEANS Danny Lee wants to debunk the belief that the weeding sessions are too tough. It is certainly hard work, but it is also not as tough as it seems. The key is to work within their means, given that the average age of the regular volunteers are also pretty high. Some choose to sit and weed, while others bring along their own tools or find ways to help ease their work. More hands make light work, and the more volunteers there are, the better it is for the course. And if there is one thing that unites them all, it is their underlying conviction in what they are doing.

Members who are keen to join the Gotong Royong team may contact Sufandy at sufandy.kamis@seletarclub.com.sg.

LOCAL RULES For Social Play Only ALTERNATIVE TO STROKE AND DISTANCE FOR LOST BALL OR BALL OUT OF BOUNDS (RULE 14.3) For a penalty of 2 strokes, the player may drop a ball in the relief area, which is anywhere within 2 club lengths between: i) the line from the hole to the point where the original ball was lost or crossed the edges of the course boundary ii) the line from the hole to the point in the fairway nearest to the point where the original ball was lost or crossed the edges of the course boundary. The spot must not be nearer to the hole and must be in the General Area. MLR E-5 DIAGRAM 1: BALL NOT FOUND When a player's ball has not been found, the player may take stroke-and-distance relief, or when Model Local Rule E-5 is introduced, the player has the additional option to drop a ball in and play from the relief area described below for two penalty strokes: Reference Points A. Ball Reference Point: The point where the original ball is estimated to have come to rest on the course (point A) B. Fairway Reference Point: The point of fairway of the hole being played (point B) that is nearest to the ball reference point, but is not nearer the hole than the ball reference point

Size of Relief Area Anywhere between: • A line from the hole through the ball reference point (point A) (and within two club-lengths to the outside of that line), and • A line from the hole through the fairway reference point (point B) (and within two clublengths to the fairway side of that line)

Limits on Relief Area The relief area: • Must not be nearer the hole than the ball reference point, and • Must be in the general area

Player Notes: As the relief area is likely to be very large, the ball could roll a considerable distance from the spot where it first strikes the ground and not need to be dropped again.

Ball Reference Point: The point where the original ball is estimated to have last crossed the edge of the course boundary to go out of bounds (point A) B. Fairway Reference Point: The point of fairway of the hole being played (point B) that is nearest to the ball reference point, but is not nearer the hole than the ball reference point

Size of Relief Area Anywhere between: • A line from the hole through the ball reference point (point A) (and within two club-lengths to the outside of that line but still on the course), and • A line from the hole through the fairway reference point (point B) (and within two clublengths to the fairway side of that line)

Limits on Relief Area The relief area: • Must not be nearer the hole than the ball reference point, and • Must be in the general area

LEARN MORE ABOUT

Excessive Penalty Score Contributed by Joyce Lam, Handicap Chairman

(Golf Handicapping)!

Why do you need a golf handicap index? Every golfing member is required to have a golf handicap to be able to play a round of golf, be it a round of 18 holes or general play of 9 holes. The handicap is to ensure that all players with differing scoring capabilities are able to enjoy playing a round of golf together, either in the same tournament (handicap net stroke or match play) or in a social game. In order to establish a level playing field or the “equaliser”, all golfers must record their scores with integrity in the Centralised Handicapping System (CHS) as provided by the Singapore Golf Association. Without proper records, the system is unable to ensure the player’s scoring capabilities and this will affect tournament results.

What is a P-score in your handicap records on CHS? In the event of a missing record, the system will generate a P-score or a penalty score in the calculation. The P-score is the lowest score submitted

for the last 20 rounds played. If a player has more than 30% of his/her total scoring records not submitted, a status of Excessive Penalty Scores (EPS) will be assigned. Some clubs have disallowed players with this status, which means they lose their playing rights which includes playing on the weekends and public holidays, ability to book flights, and eligibility to play in medals.

What will this mean moving forward? At Seletar, we have continued to allow all members to have full playing rights even with EPS status, but this may change in the future. In our recent review of the handicapping records, we noted an increase in the number of players with EPS status. We have sent letters to those affected, and we urge all members to submit your scores. To avoid “Penalty Scores”, please post your score after each round of play – whether it is 9 holes or 18 holes. If you encounter difficulties in navigating the system, please approach the Golf Office for assistance.

SGA CENTRALISED HANDICAPPING SYSTEM (SGA-CHS) The SGA CHS tracks golfers who play AT ANY GOLF COURSE IN SINGAPORE and requires that a score be posted in order for golfers to avoid being awarded a penalty score. Golf clubs will upload the Play List of Golfers in the SGA CHS. If you do not post an acceptable score within 13 days of playing, CHS will post a “penalty score” equal to the lowest Handicap Differential in your scoring record on the 14th day. Golfers can post their scores anywhere and anytime using the Internet or through the SGA CHS mobile app that can be downloaded on iOS or Android devices. All members are strongly encouraged to post their scores using the CHS app immediately after the game. DO NOT RISK YOUR HANDICAP BEING SUSPENDED BY THE HANDICAP COMMITTEE.

Fun and Friends at the Kids Tennis Camp During the March school holidays, a tennis camp was organised for our juniors over four days from 15 to 18 March 2021. Led by Coach Taufiq and his team of instructors, the camp was set at an introductory level for the kids who were beginners to tennis. The 8 juniors aged 7 to 11 years old learnt the basics and did drills and rallies. A small-scale competition was also held with awards given for the best forehand, best backhand, best serve, best volley and best player. A red ball group lesson every Saturday evening was kick-started for the same group to practise and play together. Members whose children are interested to learn tennis at the beginner level are welcome to join the red ball group lessons. Email sns@seletarclub.com.sg for more information.

Junior Tennis Match Play On 14 March 2021, a junior green dot level tennis match play was held. The primary goal was to get the juniors accustomed to playing in a competition and going up against players they had not encountered before. Bennett Tay emerged victorious out of a total of 14 juniors aged between 7 to 12 years old. Medals were awarded to the Top 4. Well done, all! Some of the juniors also joined the junior green dot performance group every Friday night. The future of the Seletar tennis fraternity is shining bright!

Upcycling Crafts To get into the festive lunar new year mood, a paperbox lion mask workshop was organized for our juniors in February 2021. The kids created their own lion heads from recycled materials and also had fun making their own dragon craft kits at home.

Finding Easter Eggs Hunting Easter eggs is a traditional game and the club organised an egg hunt in the week leading up to Easter. Clues written in fun verse led participants to the location of the eggs. A big thanks to everyone who took part! Congratulations to Sean Thia for finding all the hidden eggs and winning the grand prize!

Creating Easter Art Even amidst a pandemic and with safe management measures in place, we are happy that our collaborative art project for Easter brought our juniors and even adults together to unleash their inner artist. The final masterpiece was proudly displayed at the main clubhouse lobby over the Easter weekend.
