FIRST WORDS

Dear Members

to everyone working hard on the redevelopment.

Season’s greetings to all our members and friends of Seletar Country Club. I am honoured to be reappointed as the Club Captain, after two years as Vice-Chairman. For this, I would like to express my sincere appreciation to all for your support. I would also like to take this opportunity to extend a warm welcome to all our new members, and hope you are already enjoying the events and recreational facilities that the club have for you and your family.

A CHAMPIONSHIP COURSE IN THE MAKING I am excited to share that after months of planning and preparation, we officially started renovation works on 1 October. It is currently well underway and progressing smoothly. The working committee and I are working closely with our golf course designers and consultants to ensure that we minimize disruptions while working within budget and on schedule.

For the past two years, it was also my privilege to serve as Chairman of the Golf Course Redesign Project Team. Thank you for entrusting my committee to see through the redevelopment project. For this new term, I am pleased to once again take charge of all golf-related issues in my capacity as Club Captain. The golf course redevelopment project remains my key area of focus and priority. Even though it had been a challenging task navigating the golf course redesign project and planning for the redevelopment, we are now on track to unveiling a challenging and interesting new course come 2020. My heartfelt gratitude to the working committee members for their hard work and perseverance, and

FIRST WORDS

We are also taking into account members’ feedback while prioritizing your safety and needs so that you may continue to enjoy the game you love. It is thanks to your support, trust and understanding that we had a smooth start to the course renovation. This is through Seletar’s true spirit that we can come together and make this essential renovation a great success. Be sure to check out pages 20 to 23 for a special update on the redevelopment project as we bring you behind the scenes.

This holiday season, there will be festive workshops you can take part in with your family and plenty of drinking and partying at Seletar. We look forward to seeing you around the club!

I would also like to share that during this 17-months’ renovation period, arrangements have been made for members to continue enjoying the golf course on a composite 9. We have also made arrangements with other clubs locally and overseas for special deals. Please refer to our website for the details. We urge you to take advantage of these offers, especially those with special deals for group trips. I would also like to take this opportunity to remind golfers to exercise extra care and be mindful of other golfers on the Composite 9 course. Please practise caution and do not go beyond the fences into work sites to retrieve balls. Your safety is our utmost concern. Explore what's in store for you this festive season at Seletar!

A MEMORABLE CLOSURE GAME CELEBRATE THE HOLIDAY SEASON WITH US Thank you for your strong show of support at our golf game on Saturday, 29 September, to commemorate the closure of the golf course. The closing event, themed “Metamorphosis” and held in conjunction with the annual Captain’s and Lady Captain’s Prize, received overwhelming response from members. We had a good final round of golf, and I would like to express my appreciation to all the sponsors including the Tourism Authority of Thailand, Daimler South East Asia Pte Ltd, UOB, The Hour Glass, as well as the numerous other golf clubs and our members who supported and contributed towards the success of the event. Relive the highlights of the event on pages 16 and 17 of this issue.

In this issue of Seletar Buzz, we have put together a special booklet to help you in your planning during this joyful season. We have festive draws, Christmas celebrations, and a Countdown party in the pipeline. In this season of giving, the underprivileged in our community have not been forgotten either. Although we were not able to have our annual Charity Golf this year, we have partnered with The Boys’ Brigade in their Share-A-Gift campaign. We seek your generous support to adopt the wishes of the underprivileged and help bring a smile to their faces. More details can be found in the attached festive guide.

EXCITING TIMES AHEAD

On behalf of the Management, I wish all fellow Seletarians and your loved ones a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Moving forward, I hope you will continue to support the activities and dining outlets at Seletar to maintain the club’s vibrancy. More fun times are ahead. We will be bringing you more sports and social activities, and you can expect to hear more about them in due course.

NEW FACES AT SELETAR GOH YONG CHENG MANAGER, FINANCE & ADMINISTRATION

From walking with lions and swimming with sea turtles to hiking the Himalayas, this plucky travel buff seems to have done it all! Before joining Seletar, Yong Cheng took a 20-month break from a busy corporate life to travel the world and seek adventures in exotic places, something she’s always wanted to do but never had the time to. True to her philosophy of “Live your dreams”, this go-getter has scaled mountains such as the Northern Alps and Mount Fuji. Spontaneous and always ready for an adventure, she has set her sights on Antarctica to see the rare Emperor penguins next.

Yong Cheng has extensive experience in MNCs, and has worked in countries such as US and China for a number of years. Missing home and hoping to break away from a “nomadic” life requiring extensive travelling for work, she is happy to put her heart into keeping the finances of Seletar healthy and ensuring the machinery remains well-oiled and running.

30TH ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING On weekends when she’s not amidst the greenery of Seletar, she can be found catching the sunrise at the nature parks around our sunny island. She loves to make new friends, so don’t hesitate to say Hi the next time you see her!

NEO CHEE HUI EXECUTIVE, GOLF OPERATIONS Some might not know it, but the voice you sometimes hear out on the golf course warning you of inclement weather belongs to this affable young man in charge of your day-to-day golf operations. A nature lover, Chee Hui enjoys cycling and hiking around Singapore in his free time. He counts walking and exploring new routes and places as one of his favourite things to do. This easygoing guy has even walked all the way from Seletar Country Club to his home in Hougang, a reflective journey that he says takes him approximately two hours and is good exercise. If there is a new cycling or walking trail to be uncovered, you can be sure that he will be among the first few to venture there with his kakis. Now you know who to call if you want to know where the hidden spots of Singapore are!

On behalf of all Seletar staff, a big Thank You to our members for your generous contributions and support towards our annual Staff Day 2018.

CHAIRMAN’S APPRECIATION GAME AND DINNER

What we imagine Chairman is thinking: "Let me smooth my hair while looking suave."

Nothing says thank you to a Seletarian as much as an invitation to golf does! Chairman Cheah Kim Teck expressed his appreciation to the outgoing Management Committee and subcommittee members, sponsors and supporters for their contribution and good work over the past year with an annual appreciation golf game and dinner on 25 August 2018.

And the ladies will rule

Sharing his gratitude for the committee’s hard work, such as moving the golf course redevelopment project forward, Chairman also expressed his pride and confidence in Seletarians keeping the Seletar spirit of genuine friendliness and generosity alive. As the club will be reviewing its constitution next year, Chairman reiterated the important role that members will continue to play during the transition and in preserving our status as a club of choice for golfers and families.

LADIES GET TOGETHER:

Ahoy! Sailors on board! “There are good ships and wood ships, ships that sail the sea, but the best ships are friendships, may they always be!” Irish Proverb Fun was the order of the day as our lady golfers came together for a day of swinging good fun and bonding on 2 September 2018. The nautical themed dinner was a hit with our spirited ladies who took plenty of photos and saw the organising committee members livening up Seletar Room in their sailor costumes. A light-hearted parody skit of the classic cartoon Popeye the Sailor was also put up, starring our very own staff Chee Hui as Popeye, member Joyce Sim as Olive, and Vicki Tan as Bluto entangled in a love triangle, their antics bordering on hilarity and tickling everyone’s funny bone. It was also a perfect opportunity to celebrate the birthdays of the September babes with everyone belting out a birthday song in unison. The game that followed was a rambunctious affair that also showcased our ladies’ teamwork and spontaneity.

Here's a Seletar Salute!

While the golfers are saddened that they will no longer be able to play on the course that has delighted and challenged them over the past 23 years, they are equally looking forward to the new golf course. Chin Wei Liong, who joined the club three years ago for its challenging golf course, expressed his sadness at the renovation while sharing his hopes for the future, “I hope the Seletar character will remain and the new golf course will be as challenging.” Thanks to the generosity of all our sponsors, there were over 100 novelty, tournament, and lucky draw prizes to be won. A token of appreciation was also presented to Past Captain Mr Ismail Taha for his contributions towards Seletar. To fellow Seletarians, thanks for making this event a successful one. WHEN AGE IS

Only a Number Our heartiest congratulations to James Leow and Hailey Loh for claiming victory in the Men’s and Ladies’ division of the 19th Singapore National Amateur Championship (SNAC 2018) respectively! Prepare to be won over by their humility as we talk to the two young golfers for their winning thoughts.

HAILEY LOH For someone who’s only fifteen, Hailey Loh has been golfing for more than half her life. A seed of her interest in golf was sowed by her father Arthur, an avid golfer himself, and that has since blossomed into a love for the subtle sport. Hailey has come a long way from her time in the Seletar Junior Golf Programme. Even when she had nary a championship title or trophy under her belt, her potential was evident, and for someone of such a tender age, her commitment to the game is admirable. The Singapore Sports School student and development squad player trains five days a week when she can and hits the gym one to two times a week at Singapore Sport Institute. Showing her prowess by emerging champion in the Women’s division of SNAC 2018, Hailey is now focusing on her studies and taking a break from tournaments until her exams are over. We have nothing but well wishes for this hardworking and disciplined lady who has truly inspired us. Kudos to you, Hailey! Congratulations on your win at SNAC 2018! How do you maintain your focus and motivation throughout the competition? I just kept telling myself to stay positive and to not give up throughout the round. What did you think of your opponents throughout the tournament? All my opponents were very good players. I played against Inez, who finished second in last year’s SNAC, and I also played against Margaret, who won SNAC in 2016 in the semi-finals. I played against Linette in the finals. She is a collegiate golfer in her senior year at Seattle University and has a lot more playing experience than I do. What do you think are your strengths and weaknesses as a golfer? My strengths are my short game and my mental tenacity. I don’t drive the ball very long, so I work really hard on my short game in order to score well. I don’t give up easily when I’m on the golf course. I was 1-down until the 24th hole and won the match on the final hole. My weakness is my driving distance and long game. I don’t drive the ball very long, so I have a disadvantage as I have longer clubs which are less accurate in approaching the green. What has golfing taught you? Golf has taught me to be patient and to not give up.

GOLF

JAMES LEOW No stranger to the golfing scene and the rigours of tournaments, James Leow relishes the excitement of competitive golf and works tirelessly at improving his game by playing almost every other day. With a maturity belying his actual age, the young man who will soon be turning twenty-two has already started forging ahead on his path towards a career in golf.

Having completed his National Service earlier this year, James shows no signs of losing his touch, going on a roll to achieve commendable results in a number of tournaments over a few months. He clinched champion in the 62nd Perak Amateur Open in July, and went on to win the Men’s division of SNAC 2018. He counts Phil Mickelson and Rory McIlroy among his favorite golfers and hopes to play with them one day, perhaps in a PGA tour major. Whatever’s next for this up and coming golfer, we are certain we’ll be seeing more of him around. Well done, James! Congratulations on your triumph at SNAC 2018! How was the game for you and how do you feel about your performance? I played really well all week! I was shaping my shots well to what I wanted, missing on the right spots and making crucial putts. All in, I felt great and confident about my game and definitely am excited to be back winning one of Singapore’s very own Amateur event and getting a spot to tee it up against the pros again at the SMBC Singapore Open 2019. Did you have any game plan going into the finals and did you encounter any hurdles during the game? The game plan was pretty much the same for the whole week, from tee to green and just occasionally being aggressive when I could or needed to during the finals. Going into the finals, fatigue and soreness from my hip injury got to me and I was just doing my best to play through it and keep the pain to a minimum. You mentioned previously that you are working on training yourself mentally and emotionally. What is your training regime like, and how do you stay “in the zone” under all the pressure? My training regime has changed a little ever since going to Arizona State University for my college golf career. I’ve been practicing with pressure drills especially with putting, hitting chips and shaping shots at the range like how I would on the course and working on my mental game whenever I am out on the golf course. The biggest change was understanding my own golf game better and accepting whatever happens out on the course. Flowing well with the right mindset and knowing what helps me to stay “in the zone” under pressure was the biggest key. What does golf mean to you and what drives you to keep playing? Golf is basically my life now, I’m playing it almost every other day and putting a large amount of effort and time in it. It’s really the passion and enjoyment of competitive golf that has kept me going in this sport. I’ve learned a lot from it and it never stops teaching me new things about myself.

If you’ve missed the buzz surrounding our golf course redevelopment, this issue of Seletar Buzz brings you behind the scenes for a sneak peek into the remodeling of a golf course. The latest updates and information on playing the Composite 9 can be found on our dedicated course redevelopment webpage at http://www.seletarclub.com. sg/golfcourse-reno-updates/.

Striking Gold AT THE

The Ladies’ category bowlers

SENIOR MASTERS BOWLING TOURNAMENT

Anyone can bowl, but not everyone appreciates the unique set of challenges a bowler has to overcome and the skills it takes to be consistently good at this timehonoured sport. The challenges and work involved certainly did not stop our 32 bowlers from returning for a shot at the championship title of the Senior Masters Bowling Tournament held on 2 September 2018. With a dose of healthy competition and lighthearted enjoyment, the bowlers displayed sportsmanship and support for one another. After all, it was a wonderful opportunity to socialise with fellow Seletarians while having fun at the same time! Congratulations once again to the Ladies’ champion Lily Lim and Men’s champion Paul Ng, and to more bowling good times ahead!

The Men’s category bowlers

WITH PASTEL SHINE ART

More than drawing, Pastel Shine Art is a form of healing art developed in Japan over 20 years ago. The trial class on 22 September was conducted by Mrs Keiko Kawaguchi, a Pastel Shine Art Master Instructor certified by the Japan Pastel Shine Art Association. The gentle pastel colours, hand motion techniques, and therapeutic expression helps to reduce stress in adults and boosts self-awareness and self-confidence in children. Ms Lim Say Li, who attended the class with her daughter, was so enthralled she can’t wait to attend the certification course. She said, “I thoroughly enjoyed the class. It was very therapeutic.” More classes and a certification course for instructors are in the pipeline, so stay tuned and don’t miss out on the next one!
