IMPORTANT NOTICE MINIMUM SPENDING LEVY The Management Committee has approved the implementation of quarterly Minimum Spending Levy (MSL), which will take effect from January 2020. How Does It Work? The MSL will be charged from January 2020 and members will be designated different billing cycles based on their birth months. Which cycle do you belong to?

The chart below illustrates the quarterly billing cycles for each group.

Where does the MSL apply? • The MSL applies only to spending at the Terrace, Tavern, Poolside Café, Eagle’s View and any F&B spending at the KTV lounge and private room. • Voucher usage cannot be applied against minimum spending.

t is the most wonderful time of the year, as the magic of Christmas fills the air and the Club starts decking out in Christmas décor.

TERRACE & TAVERN REOPEN The Terrace and Tavern soft-launched in September amidst some works still in progress. Despite that, members were excited and we had a very enjoyable Oktoberfest at the Tavern the same week of our reopening – it was full house and a blast! Recap the fun and festivity on page 6. Come next year, members can celebrate the festive season in style as the Terrace gets outfitted with new tables and chairs. We thank members for your patience during the renovation period. Your continued support and patronage kept our Poolside Terrace lively and created many happy memories despite the temporary setup. Our new menu was launched on 1 October, and I heard many of you have tried the crispy handrolled homemade pizza by our F&B team, as well as other new dishes such as the roast meats and claypot beehoon.

BUZZ GOING DIGITAL As part of our ongoing efforts to go green, this issue of Seletar Buzz will be our last printed edition as we cut down on paper usage and move to being fully digitalized. The magazine will continue to be available on our website. We thank you for your support and joint efforts in saving the environment.

COUNTING DOWN TO A NEW YEAR Our annual Countdown party will take on a Casino spin this year, plus members can look forward to winning big at the lucky draw! Moving forward, we are all excited for the reopening of the new 18 holes, which is expected to be by the end of Q1 next year.

CHINESE NEW YEAR COMES EARLY Following that, Chinese New Year is just around the corner next year, and we have a host of events and treats in store for you, which you can find from page 28 onwards. He is here and there everywhere at the Seletar Terrace busy monitoring the customers’ orders, personally serving customers, clearing tables, helping to push foodladen trolleys, and overseeing staff efficiency, while usually unruffled and maintaining a calm and pleasant demeanor. That is Danny Diong, Seletar’s F&B assistant manager. I believe his example has set the tone and work ethic for a responsive and prompt service staff, never seen in my over 40 years of membership with the Club. at OKTOBERFEST

ktoberfest came early to Seletar this year - our first major event just a few days after the soft launch of Seletar Terrace and Tavern.

27 September was a night of free-flowing beer for the joyous crowd, accompanied by the music of the popular Swiss Alpine Lions band. Revelers guzzled beer and chowed down hearty German fare while soaking in the celebratory atmosphere. There were also fun drinking games and the lucky ones went home with lucky draw cash prizes of $888, $388 and $188! Myra, who has been a member for some 19 years and was at our Oktoberfest with her husband, brother and sister-in-law, said that the best part of Oktoberfest is everyone having a good time together, “We will come every year if we are in town… I even came personally to the Club to ask F&B to reserve a table for us!”

With simple ingredients and a dash of creativity, Seletar Juniors created bunny-shaped mooncakes that looked simply too adorable to be eaten! t was good vibes all around at the annual Bowling Inter-Club Friendly Game hosted at Seletar on 15 September 2019, as we welcomed friends from the Chinese Swimming Club, Serangoon Gardens Country Club, and Singapore Swimming Club for a bit of friendly competition. Regardless of team, everyone cheered for one another, and a Seletar member even played for the competing team who was a player short. The play was formatted to encourage fun and togetherness, and the scores were truly secondary to the friendship fostered and built among the participating clubs!

Congratulations to the Men’s Champion, Jason Toh.

oreen Pang knocked it out of the park from the get-go and eventually clinched the Ladies’ Champion in our annual Senior Masters Tournament, held on 1 September. A member of the Club for the past 19 years, Doreen expressed humble elation on her win, “I’m very happy. The lane conditions today are different from usual, and more challenging.” Jason Toh, Champion of the Men’s category, too celebrated his first win, and has been setting goals for himself, “Right now I’m working on improving my timing, such as when to swing and when to release the ball.” The affable bowler reignited his passion for bowling when he joined the Club in 2000 with his wife and children, where they would spend the whole day at the Sports Complex bonding over the numerous sports and social activities.

ur bowlers achieved commendable results at the 25th Adults Inter-Club Mixed Bowling League and 20th Youth Inter-Club Mixed Bowling League, which concluded on 29 September 2019 with a victory dinner hosted at Serangoon Gardens Country Club after 24 grueling yet fun weeks.

Our heartiest congratulations to Team Seletar who emerged third place in the overall team standing (Adults) of the 8 clubs who participated. In the Adults Ladies Masters, Doreen Pang and Lily Lim also clinched the 2nd and 3rd position respectively â&#x20AC;&#x201C; well done, ladies! Kudos too to our youth bowlers who gave their all throughout the duration of the games. We will be hosting the 21st Youth Inter-Club League next year, so do look forward to it!

ith the festive season soon upon us, we speak to our rising golfing stars who triumphed at the 20th Singapore National Amateur Championship (SNAC) on their favourite Christmas memories! At the SNAC held in August this year at Warren Golf & Country Club, Lucius Toh was crowned the Men’s Champion, while Aloysa Atienza emerged as 1st Runner Up in the Women’s division. The two have known each other since they were in primary school, and became fast friends after joining the Seletar League Team and hanging out with the other juniors. Both dream of playing golf at St Andrews in Scotland someday! Q. What is your favourite thing about Christmas? Lucius: Spending time with my family and relatives during Christmas gatherings. Aloysa: I just love the entire Christmas season itself! The trees, the decorations, the presents and of course extra family time!

Q. How do you usually celebrate Christmas? Any family traditions? Lucius: Every year on the Eve, my relatives would gather at my house to have a potluck home-cooked dinner. It is always really good. Thanks Marvin for always making turkey, pasta and mashed potatoes! :) Aloysa: Definitely a Christmas celebration with my family and friends! We usually celebrate my cousin's birthday on Christmas Eve and stay till way past midnight for gift exchange!

Q. Your most unforgettable Christmas? Lucius: That would be last Christmas when the team were in Myanmar a week before Christmas, up till the Eve. We played pretty well and finished 3rd in the Putra Cup in Myanmar. We even got to visit the Shwedagon Pagoda which was really beautiful. Managed to get back home late in the Eve for the yearly Christmas gathering! Aloysa: It was in 2014 where I spent my Christmas morning with my family and friends in the middle of the road in Australia! We were on a road trip from Sydney to Melbourne. We were hoping to reach a friend's place in Melbourne on Christmas Eve, just in time to count down to Christmas but we did not make it in time and so we stopped in the middle of the road and celebrated there and then! Q. Favourite holiday movie? Lucius: I do not really have a favourite Christmas movie, but I remember the past few Christmas when I had free time I would catch up on my favourite shows such as Band of Brothers, and Game of Thrones. Aloysa: HOME ALONE!

Q. What is the most memorable Christmas present you have ever received? Lucius: It was a Tiger Woods T-shirt that my girlfriend bought for me when she was studying in the US. Aloysa: As a kid I always believed in Santa Claus haha! We have all had that one thing we wanted more than any other for Christmas. Each year was different, but there was one year I asked for my first handphone. I hoped and dreamed of finding it in my stocking the following day and of course I found my first handphone in my Christmas stocking that year!

Lucius: “This was in 2017 at my cousin’s new home! It’s the most beautiful photo we have, and we had a really good time. However, we just lost our Grandpa, he will be missed greatly!”

Q. The most heartwarming thing someone has ever said to you? Lucius: Not the most cheesy thing but my coach Kim Baldwin always tells me, “You can do it, champ.” whenever I feel nervous for an event, which is all the time haha. It makes me believe in myself a little more, knowing that someone close to me genuinely does. Aloysa: I think the most beautiful thing someone has ever said to me is that I make them happy, and that I have a beautiful heart. Q: Lastly, any hidden talents? Lucius: I think I am pretty flexible, more flexible than I look haha. Not really a mindblowing talent but I can reach my palms to the ground when I am standing. Aloysa: Singing in the shower! The shower is my concert hall! The Atienza family brimming with joy and love.

4 Important Rules for Good Golf Etiquette

To allow everyone to have an enjoyable game, do keep these rules in mind when you are golfing at the course.

1 • Only smoke in your buggy on the tee boxes

Keeping the course clean Management has been alerted to cases of littering on the golf course, particularly cigarette butts. To keep our new course in pristine condition, golfers are reminded that smoking is only allowed in the buggies and on the tee boxes. Please dispose cigarette butts in the bins provided at the tee boxes. Those who are caught littering will be issued a warning letter. Subsequently, they will be referred to the Disciplinary Sub-committee for disciplinary action. Let’s take ownership of our course and keep it clean!

Repairing divots It is important to fix your divot immediately after it happens, so that the grass will be able to grow back quickly. You can pour sand (found in containers on your buggy) into the spot of the divot and pat down to even out the surface.

Raking bunkers If your ball has unfortunately landed in the bunker, after playing your shot, use a rake to smooth out the sand in preparation for golfers following behind. Do rake over your footprints too as you step backward and out of the bunker, and place the rake beside the bunker. There is no need to create a smooth, slicked slope as this will be taken care of by the maintenance team every morning.

Repairing ball marks Insert your ball mark repair tool into the turf at the edge of the indentation. Push the edge of the indentation to the centre, and work around the edges. Gently pat down the repaired ball mark with your shoe or putter.

As you play with fellow Club members, it is your responsibility to ensure each member post their scores correctly and accurately, and to alert the Handicap Committee if it is not being done. Two essential elements of peer review:

1. Members of a golf club must have a reasonable and regular opportunity to play together. A golfer needs to have played in the same group with a fellow member. Merely being on the same golf course on the same day is not considered adequate for peer review to take place. 2. Access must be provided to scoring records, as well as to a Handicap Index list, for inspection by others, including, but not limited to, fellow club members. Remember to participate in peer review the next time you are out on the course and observe all aspects of the USGA handicapping system!
