Dear Members NICE TO SEE YOU AGAIN
T
he festive period is upon us soon; and it is heartening to see the return of our Seletar Buzz – a sign of life returning to some normalcy as we resume club events and activities. Our magazine took a 6-month hiatus back in April when Singapore went into the circuit breaker and subsequently Phase 2; and now we are all looking forward to the year-end with Phase 3 in sight. On behalf of the Management Committee, I would like to thank all members for their patience, understanding and support during the tough months. We had to navigate the reopening of the Club in the face of a slew of safe management measures, which were all new to us then. Much appreciation is also in order for our staff, who remained upbeat and gave their all despite the more challenging working conditions and striving to fulfill members’ demands to the best of their abilities. To date and with members’ cooperation, we have managed to stay within the limits of the safe management measures and kept the Club and dining outlets open without too many hitches. This is only

possible with the help of our members and staff. As this is for the long haul, we urge members not to be complacent and to keep being mindful of the social regulations and your health, so we can keep the Club safe and enjoyable for everyone.

CONTACTLESS THE NEW NORM COVID-19 has made digital transformation across the globe all the more necessary, with the need to reduce physical contact and sharing of common everyday items. To this end the Club has transformed many of our operational processes – from contactless menus at our F&B to fully-online golf bookings. Since November, members can even self-order through their personal mobile phones, thus hastening orders direct to the kitchen. Other initiatives include online takeaway orders for our F&B; replacing printed receipts with e-receipts that get sent directly to members’ emails; digitalizing the Seletar Buzz; and checking ‘live’ the occupancy level of popular facilities like the gym and swimming pool during peak periods. More are in the pipeline – such as rolling out a new members’ online portal for booking of facilities and accessing personal membership services.
THE BEST IS YET TO COME Though our newly renovated golf course reopened to no fanfare in June, it has been receiving compliments from members and guests alike; and even recognized for its excellent environmental sustainability in the July issue of global journal ‘Golf Course Architecture’. The circuit breaker did put a damper on our course as a result of limited maintenance in the early months, but with Seletarians joining us in caring for the course, we expect to see the course in its full glory again soon. As with the COVID-19 situation, the Club and golf course is evolving and still developing. The best is yet to come, and we are hopeful for better times in 2021. s part of the Club’s safe management plan, the occupancy level of popular facilities EnerGym and the swimming pool during peak hours is available on the Club’s website (homepage). Members can now check the crowd level before deciding to head to these facilities. Crowd Check Counter Available Online for Viewing: • EnerGym: > Weekdays from 3 - 8pm > Weekends & public holidays (a 60-min limit will be enforced when the gym hits max occupancy of 14 pax) • Swimming Pool: > Weekends & public holidays (a 90-min limit will be enforced from 1-7pm) As current in-person queues and movement changes dynamically, the Crowd Check counter serves as an indicator of occupancy levels, and is not meant to be a guarantee of availability. A Virtual
ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
I
n light of the safe management measures due to Covid-19, our 32nd Annual General Meeting (AGM) was held virtually via Zoom this year on 24 August. A total of 127 members registered to attend the virtual AGM, with the approval for the agenda items done online as voting resolutions. The minutes of the last AGM was approved, the annual report and accounts for the past FY passed, and the auditors for the ensuing year appointed. Chairman Cheah Kim Teck expressed his appreciation to all members and staff for their support and cooperation in ensuring the Club adjusts well to the new normal, albeit not without a fair share of restrictions and inconveniences brought about by the strict safe management measures and manpower curbs. He also thanked the Management Committee (MC) and Sub-committees for their hard work behind the scenes. Chairman shared that we have received many compliments on the challenging layout and environmental sustainability of the new golf course, which is now fully operational. He thanked all involved in the project for their hard work. The Club has made much changes to improve our financial position and now has a good standing. Speaking on the AOB that was received, Chairman noted that they were constructive questions asked. Change is always under review, and the Club will continue to adapt to ride out these challenging times with members’ support.

Known as the spirit of working together and helping each other, the essence of gotong royong is very much exemplified by our members who have volunteered to embark on a weekly weeding mission so that everyone can have an even more enjoyable golf course to play on! Due to manpower curbs during the circuit breaker period, our skeletal course maintenance team were confined to carrying out largely pest-control work, resulting in weeds infiltrating our beautiful golf course. Seletarians heeded our appeal for volunteers to work together with our maintenance team in eradicating weeds, and so the first batch of over 20 volunteers gamely showed up for the first session on 19 October 2020, Four sessions have been conducted as of 12 November, led by Captain Phua Hua Seng and Vice Captain Ho Juan Heng, with more weekly sessions planned for until the weeds have been eradicated. Our heartfelt thanks to all our volunteers who have displayed not just camaraderie but also complied with safe distancing. We are always grateful for more helping hands, so if you too would like to be a part of this big-hearted community, join us! The sessions are held every Monday morning. Raving Reviews I would like to say good job well done for the new golf course. Initially I was apprehensive about the new course as was worried the course will be short and the breathtaking view will be gone. I’m happy to say the beautiful scenery that Seletar is famous for is still part of the lure of the new course. Personally to me, the course is not that long from the ladies tee. But the interesting thing is that it’s a thinking course and your shots have to be accurate to be able to play a good game. Once you become complacent with the distance, the hazards and the bunkers will be out there to remind you that this is the New Seletar 18-hole course and it is not as simple as it looks. Thank you for continuing to make our new course a challenging and interesting course.
We have the pleasure of playing a round of golf with our very own Professional golfer, Mr Mardan Mamat… Mr Mardan really enjoyed and wants us to send compliments to Captain Phua and his dedicated team to make Seletar one of the best and challenging courses in Singapore. Mr Mardan said that this is one of the few courses that he gets to utilise all his ”weapons” (clubs) in his golf bag and he is amazed at the layout of Hole 7. Even though he didn’t play well for this hole, he felt the uniqueness and the fountains/ waterfalls design was one of the best signature hole in Seletar, just to name a few. He also felt that our 4x Par 3s were some of the most challenging ones in Singapore’s golf courses as he had a chance to use his long irons. Overall, the fairways were in perfect condition and a great compliment goes to Captain Phua and the Greenkeepers for an excellent green.
We invited 4 guests for a golf game. They were full of praise for the golf. It is scenic, the condition is superb and design challenging... To all those involved in this project, well done. You have made us Seletarians proud. By the way, they also said that the food at Terrace was delicious.

Local Rules You Should Know About
N
avigating a new golf course is great fun and also challenging. Here are some commonly asked questions about the local rules.
1 Can a player obtain a free relief as his stance is on the concrete embankment? No. The concrete embankment is an integral part of the course within the penalty area. Therefore, no free relief; play the ball as it lies.
2 Where are the No Play Zones (NPZ)? No Play Zones (NPZ) are indicated by red-withwhite-top stakes. If a player’s ball is in the NPZ or interfere with the player’s intended stance or intended swing, the ball must be lifted and dropped with one stroke penalty under Rule 17.

3 What about No Play Zones (NPZ) demarcated by blue stakes? If a player’s ball is in the NPZ or interfere with the player’s intended stance or area of intended swing, the ball must be lifted without penalty and dropped under Rule 16. The margin of the NPZ is determined by the edge of the grass cut to define the boundary of the NPZ. A ball is in the NPZ when any part of the ball is overhanging this edge.
4 What do the blue stakes next to young trees mean? If a player’s ball is in such area or interfere with the player’s intended stance or intended swing, the player must take relief under Rule 16-1.

ur tennis enthusiasts were eager to pick up their rackets and hit the courts again when sports facilities were allowed to reopen following the lifting of the nation-wide circuit breaker. The Tennis Captain, Mr Tan Jet Shyang organized a friendly game with Kensington Club on 15 August for the players to train, have fun and warm up for Singapore Tennis Association (STA)’s Inter-Club Doubles tournament which was held in September. With the fight against Covid-19 still ongoing, the number of participants was kept small and safe management measures enforced. Our team fought hard and clinched fourth place in the Inter-Club Doubles tournament. Well done! On the Inter-Club Singles front, while team Seletar did not advance to the finals, our players gave their all and did admirably. Kudos to all.

eartiest congratulations to our very own Dara Ang, Daphne Ang and Calvin Sasanadi for their outstanding performance in the nationwide “virtual” bowling tournament organized by Singapore Bowling Federation. The Own Time “Virtual” Tournament was held from 8 August to 13 September 2020 and gave bowlers an opportunity to compete at their own time and with safe management measures in place amid the Covid-19 pandemic, especially after a long drought since the circuit breaker. Sisters Dara and Daphne came in fourth and fifth respectively in the Youth Girls category, while Calvin too achieved the Top 8 position in the Under 12 (Boy) category. The invitational Masters will likely take place when the nation enters Phase 3. Look out for the second round of Own Time “Virtual” Tournament happening from 28 November 2020.

Volunteer at Willing Hearts Soup Kitchen Share some love and volunteer with fellow Seletarians at Willing Hearts’ soup kitchen for a good cause! Help to prepare meals for beneficiaries such as the elderly, the disabled, low income families, children from single parent families or otherwise poverty stricken families, and migrant workers in Singapore. All it takes is a willing heart and two helping hands.

Gift Wrapping Contest Put your used (or unused) boxes to good use by joining our gift wrapping contest and stand to win prizes! Theme: White & Silver Wrapped gifts must resemble a rectangular box within the following dimensions: Length – Between 16cm to 22cm Width – Between 8cm to 15cm Height – Between 3cm to 10cm Examples of items that can be used include tissue boxes, face mask boxes and disposable glove boxes. The sky’s the limit! Materials must be sourced and cost borne by the participant. Participants may use any kind of white paper as the wrapping material for the base. Contest runs from 2 Nov to 7 Dec 2020. Entries will be reviewed and voted by a panel of sub-committee members selected at the Club’s discretion. Judging Criteria: 1) Use of materials in a creative manner (25%) 2) Interpretation of the White and Silver theme (25%) 3) Quality of workmanship (25%) 4) Overall presentation and impression (25%)
