Remaining Relevant

Dear Members It was an eventful 2017 for us, with matters surrounding the renewal of the land lease, re-design of the golf course and renovation of the F&B outlets taking centre-stage. Thankfully as December draws to a close, I am glad we are wrapping up the year on several positive notes.

Project Update

The past years have seen us focus our efforts at ensuring that Seletar Country Club remains relevant to members and the community, by being committed to providing: • A memorable golfing experience with a beautiful and challenging golf course • A delightful dining experience with quality food and beverage options • A vibrant and entertaining social and F&B scene

At the recent EOGM held on 9 October, 80% of our members voted and approved the top-up contribution for renovation of the golf course and F&B outlets. We are certainly encouraged by this overwhelming support, which marks a critical turning point as we can now take the next step forward in our redevelopment plans.

I assure members that our redevelopment project will be built on these strengths and we aim to keep to the Club’s motto of being a ‘friendly family club of choice’.

Moving forward, I will be heading a new taskforce to oversee the redevelopment project. The task force comprises key MC members and our main aim would be to deliver the best outcome for the project within the set budget and timeline. Members will be updated on the progress through the next few issues of Seletar Buzz.

We recently celebrated several successes – from being crowned Singapore’s third best golf course to personal achievements by our fellow Seletarians who scored big time on the golf course and bowling lanes. All were acknowledged for their hard work at the Chairman’s Appreciation Dinner on 19 September.

As for the top-up contribution, members will have up to 29 December this year to decide to opt in or out and we definitely hope to see all our fellow Seletarians continue their memberships with us to 2040.

On top of that, Seletar continues as one of the most vibrant clubs in town with our exciting themed parties and golf dinners. Our recent Halloween-themed annual fishing fiesta at the Seletar Water Sports Centre, complete with

during the teething period. Our aim is to integrate our front and back end systems to eliminate charging errors and unauthorised use of your membership card.

a sizzling outdoor BBQ and huge bouncy castle to boot, drew a multitude of Seletar families with their friends and children. It was heartening to see that everyone had a good time bonding over fishing, soccer and the mouthwatering BBQ buffet spread.

More improvements to the Club are also underway and we strive to make every member’s experience a pleasant one. We will provide more convenient methods for you to update particulars, view statements, book events and club facilities online. You will also be able to enjoy faster service at our F&B outlets with self-ordering systems to shorten your waiting times. To keep ourselves aligned with SG Secure, our digital and physical security will be enhanced and we will provide more news updates on this at a later date.

Over at the Tavern, we are still one of the few clubs with no less than seven resident and member bands playing every Tuesday to Sunday nights. ‘Singapore Cowboys’ Matthew and the Mandarins, even performed as one of our guest bands from August to October and members have also requested for more ‘special feature’ guest bands. So this November, be entertained by Jerry and The Neu Faces who will be playing every Tuesday at the Tavern. Let's rock this festive season!

Celebrate 2018 with Us Smarting Up for 2018 Next year will be an exciting one for us as we put the wheels in motion for the various renovation and improvement projects. So in the meantime, let’s welcome the New Year with our grandest year-end bash – the annual Countdown Party! Remember to book early, as seats are limited.

Soon you will be receiving letters from the Club with your new smart membership cards that are RFID-enabled. These ‘tap’ membership cards are part of our transition towards a cashless club environment, which will be implemented club-wide from January next year. This will enhance and simplify our membership verification processes as members can in the future access facilities and transact in the Club with just a tap.

Also, in celebration of the Year of the Dog, make sure your precious pet’s photo gets featured in our Cutest Dog contest!

For now, you can immediately use these tap-cards to enjoy member prices at all F&B outlets and payment counters (i.e. golf, bowling, jackpot and main clubhouse reception). To enable this, you will need to present your membership cards at all times in the Club.

Seline Kok Xin Hui Executive, Marcom Seline graduated from Nanyang Technological University (NTU) with a degree in English Literature. At first glance, this new marcom executive is a gentle soul who loves to laugh a lot. Yet beneath this exterior is a person who loves expressing herself through the written word. She even keeps a physical diary to pen down her thoughts and feelings from time to time! Seline loves immersing herself in the world of fiction and has read each of the Harry Potter books at least five times. Her idea of a perfect day is to sit down with a good book in the company of her pet cat. Seline is also an avid football fan. Talk to her about football and she can go on with you for hours on end. She has supported Liverpool Football Club since 2002 and it is a torrid love affair that will never die. She dreams of going to Anfield one day to watch them lift the English Premier League trophy, but until then, feel free to seek her out for football discussions. Contrary to popular belief, girls can have a sound knowledge of what the offside rule is!

If you have yet to receive your new card by the first week of December, please call our membership department at 6486 0882 / 0884 to request for a first time complimentary replacement. Your new cards are ready for immediate use. However, the old membership card will still be accepted till 28 February 2018.

From 1 March onwards, only the new cards will be accepted and members who did not bring their new cards to the Club will: 1) Be charged public rates at all F&B outlets and recreational facilities 2) Not be able to book golf slots at the self-service kiosks 3) Have to undergo verification processes at golf reception to reduce unauthorised entry into golf course

Extraordinary General Meeting

And the results are out!

The second Extraordinary General Meeting (EOGM) of the year was held on Monday, 9 October. Following the first EOGM earlier this year on 3 April, it was decided that the Club’s land lease should be renewed up to 2040. This was taking into account a boundary setback of 15m for the government to build a public access walking trail. This time, the meeting was organised to resolve that the Management Committee (MC) be authorised to implement a members’ top-up contribution of $7,800 and $1,500 respectively per Ordinary and Social Member, and incur all necessary capital expenditure for the golf course works and renovation of the food & beverage (F&B) outlets not exceeding $29 million.

A total of 227 voters turned up for the meeting and were each given an electronic voting device to cast their votes later. The meeting started at 6.30pm with Chairman Cheah Kim Teck giving his welcome address. Honorary Secretary Kelvin Chia then conducted demonstrations to show members how to use the electronic voting device to register their votes. This new electronic voting process would capture and tabulate

In his closing address, Chairman thanked every member present for their time and support in helping to move the Club forward. With the strong mandate received, the Club can now focus on restructuring works and ensure that both the golf course and F&B facilities undergo the needed improvement works for members’ convenience and comfort.

Official voting began at 7pm and within a minute, the results were flashed on screen. The Committee announced to loud cheers and applause that the resolution was passed as a majority of 181 members voted with a resounding ‘Yes’, making up for 80% of all voters. There were smiles all around and this result meant that members’ beloved golf course could now undergo renovation works to retain its 18-hole structure. A number of members were even seen slapping each other’s backs and congratulating one another.

Keeping Distractions at Bay with New Dividers at Driving Range We have now installed bay dividers at the driving range so that golfers can focus on their swings. With these dividers, golfers can now practice their strokes with minimal distractions.

Usage of Golf Balls at Practice Chip & Putt Green near Driving Range Members are reminded to use only their personal golf balls when practising at the practice chip and putt green. Golf balls from the driving range should not be used at the practice chip and putt green.

Note on Golfing Bye Laws Kindly be reminded that according to Golfing Bye Laws, members are responsible for their guests within the Club. The Club takes a firm stance towards members and their guests who do not show respect to other golfers. A case has recently undergone review by the Disciplinary Sub-committee whereby a member's guest was found using vulgarities on another Seletar member during a golf game. The member has been suspended for a period of two months and the guest is prohibited from entering the Club premises. Members are encouraged to be accountable for their guests and inform them of the consequences of such actions.

Affiliation Agreement The Club is pleased to announce our latest affiliation agreement with Bali National Golf Club! Bali National Golf Club boasts a luxurious 18-hole course amid lush greenery. Having completed overhauling works in 2014, it has since won many awards for its beautiful design, including the Best Golf Resort in Indonesia 2017 by Golf Digest USA. The course comes complete with challenging finishing holes to put every golfer to test. On top of this, Bali National Golf Club has 7 lavish villas which overlooks the picturesque Hole 17 and 18. It is no secret that girls just wanna have fun. And fun they did have at Seletar Ladiesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Open. The ladies were pampered from head to toe with complimentary manicure and pedicure services on top of massages after their golf game. Everything was done to make them feel like royalty before their lavish dinner. One of the Hole-in-One prizes was a very gorgeous set of jewellery worth $28,000! As fate would have it, the amazing feat was achieved by our very own Seletarian, Cindy Yap. After the excitement at Hole 6, she gushed, â&#x20AC;&#x153;I was totally speechless after it happened. unexpected as it was my first ever and I was on cloud nine after that! The feeling is just incredible.â&#x20AC;? Cindyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s euphoria matched the overall mood post the golf game, as ladies hurriedly dolled themselves up in the changing rooms to get ready for dinner. It was indeed a sight to behold when the ladies finally emerged. Dressed in gold and stunning outfits, they looked just like queens and princesses! It was as if Seletar Room has turned into a royal ballroom and emcee Fei Fei amped up the atmosphere with entertainment in her flashy outfits and outrageous antics. It was a night where our ladies indulged in great fun with elegance and style to boot. Chairman’s Appreciation 'The Seletar Way' Mention the word 'Seletar' and what comes to mind? This year's Chairman's Appreciation showed us just what it was like to celebrate accomplishments 'The Seletar Way', one that is full of fun, camaraderie and vibrancy. It was a proud day for Seletar Country Club. Not only did we commemorate our golfers’ victory in the SGA Inter-Club League, we also celebrated our very own Keith Saw’s golden performance at the SEA Games 2017. To top it off, we were still basking in the glory of being rated by Golf Digest Singapore as the 3rd best golf course in Singapore for the first time! To keep these wonderful achievements etched in our memories, the Chairman’s Appreciation doubled up as an awards night. Our emcee for the night, Suhaimi Yusof, was invited to lead So what if it’s raining? We have our buggies!

the awards presentation ceremony. This Sergeant Dollah from Police and Thief was so cheerful and friendly, he was just like a Seletarian himself! Of course, it helps that Suhaimi has a natural bond with our Club and understands the familial spirit we have. He said, “Seletar Country Club is just like my second home. The people are so friendly and I just love to go there and soak in the ambience while eating my favourite durian chendol.” Although the chendol was quickly forgotten with the delectable buffet spread and free flow drinks, those present never once let up on their fun loving enthusiasm. They displayed groovy dance moves and Chairman Cheah Kim Teck even went up on stage to sing! He delivered a soulful rendition of Elvis Presley’s ‘I Did It My Way’ together with Captain Ismail Taha. When the song ended, Chairman aptly declared, “This is the Seletar Way!”

Celebrating in style was definitely the Seletar way of doing things. The atmosphere nearly hit fever pitch by the time Matthew and the Mandarins performed. Member Liew Mee Peng filmed the band in action, adding that the event was great as she had been eagerly anticipating their live performance. Perhaps her husband, SGA League Player Yau Chung Shyan summed up the evening best. "Fun, laughter and camaraderie was the order of the evening," he said. And indeed it was. Our SGA League players from Men’s 'A' Division happy with their crystal trophies!

As one of China’s seven ancient capitals, Hangzhou is a city steeped in history and culture. Famous European explorer Marco Polo was once so enthralled by Hangzhou’s scenic beauty; he described the place as 'the finest and most splendid city in the world', the 'City of Heaven'. When 23 of our golfers travelled to Hangzhou from 16 to 21 September, golf took a backseat as they feasted their eyes on the natural beauty of this city. Even at the different golf courses they played at, Deqing Dragon Hill Lake Golf Club, Anji King Valley Golf Club and Deqing Moganshan Gowin Golf Club, it was the amazing views that captivated everyone. Many of them also looked forward to visiting the symbolic West Lake, a UNESCO World Heritage site which they visited on their rest and recreation day. With temples, pagodas, pavilions and ornamental trees surrounding the lake, the view was simply breathtaking. It was definitely the highlight of their trip! That same day, our golfers dropped by another tourist attraction, Song Dynasty Town. They enjoyed cultural performances like the 'Romance of the Song Dynasty Show', which depicted scenes from the Song dynasty. The elaborate performances and extravagant costumes had our golfers mesmerised!

Bogor: City 'Without Worries'

Bogor is one of the most densely populated cities in Indonesia. During the Dutch colonial era, it was named Buitenzorg, which means 'without worries' in Dutch. This city has such a rich and laidback culture; it is a place that people often seek out for recreation and relaxation.

Known for its wide variety of cuisine as well as pristine golf courses, Bogor is a great place for a quick getaway. 29 of our golfers made a trip to Bogor from 1 to 4 October to visit their famous golf courses. They managed to play on three of them â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Klub Golf Bogo Raya, Rancamaya Golf and Country Club, as well as Riverside Golf Club. These golf courses even provided personal caddies for our golfers! Our golfers especially loved the authentic Javanese cuisine like Ikan Goreng, Nasi Liwet and Ayam Bakar Taliwang. The amount of spice and seasoning was just right for them! Although Bogor has earned the nickname 'Rain City' due to its frequent rain showers even during the dry season, our lucky golfers experienced none of that wet and gloomy weather during their visit. Nothing can stop our Seletar golfers when they are on song. Not the SGA League players from other clubs, and certainly not the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth (MCCY) or Singapore Sports Council. Our golfers proved their mettle once more by winning the overall champion during the Wong Kan Seng Trophy on 10 September. During the same event last year, team SportSG and MCCY took home the prestigious trophy. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s definitely high time we wrest it back from them! Captain Ismail Taha hoisted the trophy into the air to cap off an eventful Sunday which also saw Seletarians Diane Koh and Maureen Lee taking home the overall prize. Raffles Country Club Comes to Visit! One can never have too many friends. At Seletar Country Club, one can never have too many golf kakis too! When Raffles Country Club (RCC) came to visit on 24 September, committee members from both sides had a friendly game of golf and took the chance to expand their golf kaki database. The visit from RCC was a customary practice to promote closer ties between the two clubs. Close bonds have been forged over the years and even though RCC will cease all operations in July 2018, we hope that the friendship shared between the two clubs will go way beyond that. Senior Masters

Strike Back!

With poise and composure, Angel Yeo bowled her way to the top spot in the Ladies’ Category of the Senior Masters Bowling Tournament. Although the scores were close, she maintained her lead from beginning to end and eventually won the title by 14 pinfalls. Shirley Lim and Lau Su Eng came in second and third respectively. When asked about the secret to her success, Angel pinned it to good luck on the day of competition. She said, “Although I did not bowl well in my last game, it was really my lucky day and I won. Perhaps it also helped that I was rather familiar with most of the competitors there!”

Bowling Convenor Lily Lim, winner of the high game in the Ladies’ Category, said, "Everyone was very friendly as always and there was a good show of sportsmanship. We all had an enjoyable time!” Andrew agreed with her, adding that the atmosphere was warm and welcoming. “Participants constantly cheered each other on. Over at the Men's category, Andrew Fong claimed the title comfortably with a winning margin of more than a hundred pinfalls. However, it was not until the second block of games that he established a lead over the rest of his competitors. He said, “After bowling two games from the first block of ten games series, I was among the front runners but definitely not the lead. It was only during the second block that I climbed up a few positions.”

It was not all smooth sailing for Andrew but with grit and determination, he prevailed. In the third block of games, he overcame some difficulties with the lane to eventually come in first. “I experienced difficulties in carrying the corner pin and even had one or two open frames. Fortunately for me, the rest of the field faced the same predicament and I was able to maintain my lead.” Patrick Tan and Jason Chua finished behind him in second and third place, completing an afternoon of strikes and spares. Keep Calm and Try Scuba! 3, 2, 1, GO! This was not the start of any race, but our Club’s first scuba session in action. As our junior members dived underwater for the first time, their cheeky and confident smiles told us a different story altogether. Instead of being hesitant, they were unafraid, enthusiastic and raring to go! Within minutes, they learnt how to use their diving equipment and were happily communicating with each other underwater. They were such fast learners, the diving instructors guided them to the deep end of the pool in no time. There, the children took to the water like fishes and submerged underwater with their diving equipment, kicking their flippers skillfully to move around.

A Funtastic Day at A fun evening out for families and friends alike

There’s nothing quite like reeling in a big catch to make an angler’s day. For Aron, his big catch came in the form of a 12.65kg Redtail Catfish. It also turned out to be the biggest catch of the night at our Freaky Fishing event! When asked if he had any tips for fishing, Aron replied, “You have to be patient. I usually just cast my line as far as possible into the centre of the pond and wait. This time, I did not have to wait too long before the fish bit the bait, and I managed to pull it to the corner but it was so heavy we needed two people to lift it up with a net!” For 14 year old Tyler Kok, it was indeed a memorable night as he won a prize for catching the most number of fish. He caught four Tilapia and one Belida, all of which weighed more than one kilogram each. Impressive!

Of course, what’s Halloween without treats? With face painting services available, the kids soon transformed into little ghosts and ghouls for the night. It was quite a sight seeing all the monsters, zombies and vampires running about the place! Halloween may have come early, but the fun definitely doesn’t stop here!

Tyler was there with his family and after winning the prize for the most catch, he said, “I had a lot of fun while fishing! Even though I am not very experienced, it was about spending time with my family and I really enjoyed myself today at Seletar.” Apart from fishing, there were Halloween activities for our little ones too! From bouncy castle, to pumpkin painting and craft corner, the children had plenty to keep themselves occupied while their parents fished. There were even games like pinatas and molly fishing for the kiddies.

Our much awaited Oktoberfest is back for the 11th year! With the signature Pork Knuckle and yummy German Sausage available, it was simply irresistible. And of course, what is Oktoberfest without some ice-cold beer? The first drinking game of the night was the Speed Beer Challenge. Teaming up in pairs, the fastest to chug down two mugs of beer would win. Johnny Neo and his teammate Seow Foo gulped down their beer so much faster than any of the other four pairs, there was simply no Live music by Swiss Alphine Lions

When asked for tips on how to drink fast, Johnny said simply, “You don’t drink, you just pour it down your throat.” Beer lovers out there, this is definitely the guy to beat during next year’s Oktoberfest! In the next segment, we tried to hunt down the one with the best sense of taste. Think it is easy to tell the difference between beer brands? You would be surprised! Four volunteers tried their hand at being beer connoisseurs for the night. They had to taste and correctly identify the three different brands of beer while blindfolded. The winner was Chuah Su Sum, who managed to guess two of the brands correctly. His trick to winning the blindfold challenge? By strategically writing down the Tiger brand twice! The eagerly awaited lucky draw had Netten Wikkie winning $300 cash while Ng Tiong Aik happily went home $500 richer. The main prize of $1000 cash was won by Wolfgang Huppenbauer, affectionately known by friends as Huppie. He and his wife were so delighted with their win, they could not resist a celebratory prost onstage! Oktoberfest may be over, but the celebration certainly doesn’t stop here! The festive season is upon us so make merry, and we hope to see you at the next Oktoberfest in 2018!
