Our Firstever Full Elections! O

ur 31st Annual General Meeting (AGM) on 29 July 2019 heralded a new beginning as the Club conducted its first full-elections for the Management Committee. To facilitate more members casting their votes in this inaugural full elections and mitigate operational issues such as space limitations at the carpark, Seletar Room and dinner, voting commenced from 2pm right up to 7.30pm at the Eagle’s View. This saw a record number of 596 voters and members appreciated the flexibility to cast their votes in a wider window and with a more dispersed crowd. Many also gave their thumbs up at the orderliness of the event, which would not have been possible without members’ support. Always a good time to catch up with friends!

espite the difficulty of getting practice due to our ongoing golf course renovation, our SGA Inter-Club League players gave it their all in the annual round-robin match play event that took place over nearly four months, commencing in April this year. The embattled players took time and effort to arrange their own training and worked hard to give their best shot in every leg of the league, taking pride in playing in Seletar’s name. Even though they did not win any titles, we are still very proud of them for their commitment and sacrifices. Kudos to all the players!

To Batam With S

hort as it may be, the ladies’ two-day getaway to Batam on 7 July for their Monthly Medals cum Get-Together was a sweet and heartwarming affair. At the evening gathering, there were barely any dry eyes in the room after Lady Captain Angelia Lim’s heartfelt speech, thanking all the ladies for their contribution and support over the years. The Ladies Sub-Committee too had a surprise planned for Lady Captain, presenting her a photo frame encasing memories of their good times. Perhaps the highlight of the trip was the pajamas party, where the ladies let their hair down and bonded over games.

A toast to friendship!

The game held at Palm Springs Golf & Country Club was deservedly won by Oh Ming Choo (Ladies ‘A’ Division) and Sim Chin Choo (Ladies ‘B’ Division) with a respective score of 44 points and 43 points. In addition to golf, the ladies also enjoyed massage, shopping, Indonesian food and best of all, each other’s company!

It's a PJ party!

Eng Wei Jin

1

6-year-old Wei Jin shot 73, 72, 71 strokes to clinch the Boys Overall Best Gross Trophy at the 2019 NSRCC Junior Open held at NSRCC Kranji Sanctuary Golf Course from 11 to 13 June. Set to graduate next year under the Singapore Sports School’s International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, this disciplined and hardworking student-athlete has been golfing since he was three and a half years old, and started training competitively when he was in Primary Three. Congratulations and keep doing what you love, Wei Jin!

Q. When did you realise you like golfing? A. Probably when I was around eight years old. I was at my first overseas tournament and I got second place – it was a boost of confidence for me, and motivated me to train harder and be better.

Q. What is your proudest golfing achievement to date? A. I think it would be this win (NSRCC Junior Open 2019), because it is my first win in seven years, so I am very happy.

Q. Who would you love to golf with if given the chance and why? A. That would be Tiger Woods, because his mental game is so strong. He does not get distracted by a bad shot.

Q. How intense was the final game of the NSRCC Junior Open Championships? A. I actually started with a 3-shot lead, but at Hole 7 my lead was back to zero, so I was getting quite angry at myself. I would say my momentum picked up at Hole 8 or 9 with a par and birdie. It was a really close match with Jay (Jayaditya), so it was pretty intense.

GOLF

Q. What is it that you like about golf? A. I would say I like the challenge. Every shot is different, and it is also very much a mental game.

Q. What is the best piece of advice you have ever been given? A. Dream it. Believe it. Live it.

C

urrently a Year-2 student at Hwa Chong International School, Trevor played an eagle at Hole 10 on the last round of the 2019 NSRCC Junior Open, and posted scores of 80, 82, 76 to emerge the best gross winner in the Boys ‘B’ division. Not one to rest on his laurels, Trevor golfs four times a week on average, spending time both at the range and on the course. The future is bright for this cheerful golfer who has set his sights on pursuing golf and studies in the US. Our heartiest congratulations! Q. How did you first started playing golf? A. It all started from my dad bringing me for a trial lesson with his golf coach, Poh Eng Wah. I was in awe when I watched how the coach swung the golf club which gave out this ‘thwack’ sound – satisfying or gratifying if you wish to call it. I thought, “I want to be able to do that too, like this coach.” Q. Who has been instrumental in your golfing journey? A. My dad and my coach – Poh Eng Wah.

Trevor with his golfing peers.

Q. What do you enjoy about golfing? A. Golf is an interesting sport that requires a lot of judgement and accuracy. Every shot is a different shot even if one plays at the same course over and over again. Q. Do you have a favourite or most memorable golf course? A. That would be Torrey Pines in San Diego, US. Q. How do you balance studies and golf? A. It will be more of time management, planning and working around my school time table, golf training and tuition. I am grateful that my teachers have been supportive of my golf commitments especially when I had to miss lessons for competitions. I am also grateful to my classmates who have been updating me with the notes whenever I am away from school. Q. Do you do any other sports? A. I did rugby in primary school for six years and was a part of St Andrew’s Junior School rugby team. I also enjoy cycling and swimming.

A Championship Course in the Making From the Construction Manager’s desk: Progress update

A

s we enter Phase Two of construction, we are proud to start seeing the achievements brought about by a lot of hard work put in by all parties involved. Early holes to open are giving members a glimpse of the new layout to come and more importantly, we can start introducing new playing conditions that will mature and get better as the course grows older.

Nine holes are now grassed, and we are nearing completion of our integrated lake system that will make Seletar self-sufficient in its water storage. The works however, did not come without struggle. In Phase One, the contractor had to deal with large quantities of unexpected silt and unsuitable material in excess of 100,000m3. Management of this material and handling within the site has been testing due to the restricted working areas and access. However, with close supervision and monitoring, treatment of this material is also nearing completion. Like any project, we have made alterations to the sequence of works to take advantage of the weather and better manage site conditions, including salvaging of sands and management of the earthworks progress. We are happy to say the first nine holes will be open for members' play by October 2019 and the course will be fully opened in March 2020 as planned. The quality of work that is being achieved to date is amongst the best I have seen in 30 years of golf construction. The consistency and compliance with specifications will ensure great playing conditions and a far more manageable course for the future of Seletar. To achieve these standards has required hard work from our site Project Manager Mike

16

GOLF

McCauley. Backed by great support from the Club’s Management team, as well as the dedication and active involvement of the Club Captain Phua Hua Seng and Golf Course Redesign (GCR) Committee, we are very confident in producing the best and most suitable course for Seletar members. Our course architects have produced a wonderful members’ course that I am sure will exceed the expectations of members. In addition to high standards of construction, our Management team, architect and GCR committee have worked hard to reduce costs and eliminate overruns. As such, we expect the final construction cost to come in well under budget.

The quality of work that is being achieved to date is amongst the best I have seen in 30 years of golf construction.

Owen Hester, Green Dynasty As more holes open in the coming months, we welcome members’ feedback and comments. We also ask members to be patient and understanding as the turf is still young and in a maturing stage. A new golf course can take up to two years to fully mature and early play on young

turf can slow its progress. The future however is very exciting for this course and Club, and we are very proud to be associated with the new gem of the Singapore golfing scene.

From the Architect’s desk: Playing the new course Excellent attention to detail has been paid to the overall construction, and plans have been followed extremely well. The project managers have done an excellent job keeping the project vision on track by insisting on high quality work. The removal and transplanting of trees has opened up some fantastic views from the Clubhouse and will greatly enhance turf quality. The new strategies required for the golf course will create strong interest from golfers of all levels and raise awareness of the high quality golf course Seletar possesses.

Enhanced water features will add drama and memorability to all the golf holes. Multiple tees allow greater flexibility with tee placement, the spreading out of wear on the turf and addition of shot variety within each golf hole. The golf course can be set up and presented in many different ways just by changing the tee and pin placement. The new design creates many strategic options on how to approach each hole. This can be based on players’ abilities, or the level of aggressiveness players choose. A high quality team approach has delivered a top-tier golf course within the given time frame, while keeping costs under budget

and parts of the golf course open for play to members. Any one of these is challenging enough to attain, and to achieve all three is a great victory for the Club and something we can all be proud of. It proves that assembling the right team pays dividends to clients. The redesigned greens, although slightly smaller, will provide much greater test and variety as there are many more viable, fair pin positions. The management and maintenance team must take advantage of this new character for the greens. We are pleased with the results and proud to recommend our existing and future clients to visit and experience the rebirth of Seletar Country Club.

The golf course can be set up and presented in many different ways just by changing the tee and pin placement. David Dale, Golfplan

9 New Holes Ready for Play Soon! The following sequence of play will be applicable from 27 September 2019 to 31 March 2020: Hole 1 - Hole 2 - Hole 3 - Hole 13 - Hole 4 - Hole 5 - Hole 9 - Hole 15 - Hole 16

Here’s a preview of the nine new holes and how to play them!

(Composite Hole 3) Hole 3 – Par 4

(Composite Hole 1) Hole 1 – Par 4

A completely new and challenging long par 4 over water, with the green sitting tight to the water and a large bunker behind. The fairway bunker to the left of the landing area forces golfers to favor the right side and brings the water more into play on the second shot.

The large trees on the left will pose a hazard to the tee shot favoring the left side of the fairway. The approach to the green has been regraded with greater visibility to the left bunker and front of the green, and a challenging pin position on the right of the green. (Composite Hole 2) Hole 2 – Par 3 The fairway has been reduced in size, adding more rough and increasing the difficulty of the tee shot. A bunker added to the right of the center of the green creates greater challenge and strategy to the pin location.

(Composite Hole 4) Hole 13 – Par 3 The tees have been reconfigured and moved back, with the green shifted away from the front easement and reservoir. A large bunker front right of the green is complimented by a similar bunker along the left of the green. (Composite Hole 5) Hole 4 – Par 5 A completely new and beautiful par 5 hole wrapping around a large new lake, with a fairway bunker at the first landing area. Lots of risks versus rewards here for the golfer on top of his/ her game.

18

GOLF

(Composite Hole 6) Hole 5 – Par 4 A very short and strategic new hole that may be one of the most memorable. A layup hole depending on what club the golfer wants to hit in to the green. The longer the tee shot, the more hazards to contend with. Smart play is an iron layup short of all the sand.

Hole 3 and 15.

(Composite Hole 7) Hole 9 – Par 4 The fairway bunker has been enlarged and shifted toward the green slightly to be more relevant for the long hitters. The green complex design has put a premium on the approach shot as the hole is not too long. A small pot bunker has been located left front of the green and a larger bunker guards the right front of the green. (Composite Hole 8) Hole 15 – Par 4 A completely new hole, with the large banyan tree as a dramatic backdrop. The green will sit tight to the water with bunkering in the back and front of the green. Fairway spill-off areas at the back and right of the green, allowing for more types of shot selections.

(Composite Hole 9) Hole 16 – Par 4 The fairway bunkering has been adjusted to better fit the length of the new tee shot. The green has been pushed back to gain some distance and the bunkering reconfigured to allow more challenging pin positions.

Golf Etiquette

Let’s Take Care of Our Golf Course!

W

ith the upcoming new course, we seek golfers’ cooperation in the upkeep of the course to keep it in pristine condition. Marshals have been empowered to report errant golfers who choose to ignore basic golf etiquette while golfing. Golfers who are caught not following the golf etiquette for the first time will be issued a warning letter. Subsequently, they will be referred to the Disciplinary Subcommittee for disciplinary action. We thank everyone for your cooperation.

1

2

Rake the bunkers

3

Repair ball marks

If your ball has unfortunately landed in the bunker, after playing your shot, use a rake to smooth out the sand in preparation for golfers following behind. Do rake over your footprints too as you step backward and out of the bunker. There is no need to create a smooth, slicked slope in the bunker as this will be taken care of by the bunker maintenance team.

Repair/replace divots

Help keep the golf course in pristine condition by fixing your divot immediately after it happens. The grass will be able to grow back quickly. You can pour sand (found in containers on your buggy) into the spot of the divot and pat down to even out the surface.

Insert your ball mark repair tool into the turf at the edge of the indentation. Push the edge of the indentation to the centre, and work around the edges. Gently pat down the repaired ball mark with your shoe or putter.

Watch Out For Our New Bunkers! 9

Heightened Aesthetics & Playability

Golfers would have noticed that our new bunkers are looking much more aesthetically pleasing! The bunker faces and bunker sand are visible from the tees and landing areas in the par 5 holes. The sand is firm, and provides players with sturdy footing to execute their bunker shot. A compacted, smooth bunker flash and a loose, friable bottom for players’ recovery shot is being presented by the maintenance team.

9

Innovative & Superior Design

We are also pleased to share that our new bunkers are equipped with a new drainage enhancement feature known as the “Capillary Concrete Bunker System” which is constructed just beneath the sand. It gives the bunkers total drainage control and keeps bunker moisture at optimal levels to eliminate washed out bunkers, soil contamination, plugged ball lies and other bunker maintenance and playability problems. Capillary concrete not only rapidly drains rainwater from storms, it also moves moisture back up to the bunker sand during drier weather through special micropores and capillary action. Moisture is stored and restored to the sand faces to provide more ideal playing conditions.

9

Raking your bunkers

The bunkers are designed such that the ball will not be plugged or come to rest in a flashes sand face. If this were to occur, the consistency of the bunker play for members will be lost and recovery shots will be based upon luck rather than skill. Golfers should simply rake the bunker floor lightly to remove their footprints. There is no need for golfers to create a smooth, slicked slope in the bunker as this will be taken care of by the bunker maintenance team every morning. We hope golfers enjoy these new features and don’t forget to follow through on all your bunker shots!

ur contestants shone at the Seletar’s Got Talent competition on 29 June, as music-loving Seletarians gathered to witness the birth of a new Seletar Star and of course, have fun at the same time! Given the singing prowess of all the contestants, the judges, comprising Darren Lim, Joey Quek and Gary Aw, observed that it was particularly difficult to determine a winner! As there was a tie between the first and second placings, and between the third and fourth placings, the top four contestants had a sing-off, with Jessie Hong eventually emerging victorious in first place with her heartwarming rendition of “Letter to my 15-yearold self”. Kudos too to Janet Ee, Shella Tan, and Sandy Tock for clinching the second, third and fourth places respectively. A big thank you to all members who participated and those who came to support our Seletar talents!

An impromptu and surprise performance by Henry Seet received the first and only "perfect score" for the night!

The contestants together with the Sports & Social Sub-committee and staff.

A great time for family bonding!

Our supportive audience!

Congratulations to Jessie Hong, our very own Seletar Star!

Janet Ee serenading all with her song rendition.

A night of music, booze and good company.

It's hugs and love all around!
