FIRST WORDS

Dear Members CONGRATULATIONS I would like to start by congratulating Team Seletar for the big win at the SGA Inter-Club League that was recently concluded in July. Thanks to the hard work and commitment put in by our Seletar Team Captain Andy Pang and his league golfers, Seletar Country Club came out tops, ousting defending champions Tanah Merah Country Club and Singapore Island Country Club. I hear that our supporters made a big difference in keeping the morale of our players up through the four months of competition. That is a major feat in itself – so here’s a big shout out to our supporters for personifying the Seletar Spirit. The past six months have also seen other meaningful events in the Club. Foremost was the annual Seletar Mercedes-Benz Charity Golf; I would like to thank Seletarians for dipping deep into their hearts and once again demonstrating the Seletar Spirit for giving, to help the underprivileged in our community. This year we raised $100,000 for the Community Development and Welfare Fund of Nee Soon GRC and Yuhua SMC, which in turn benefits their residents on public assistance and Comcare support programmes. Secondly, the Singapore Junior Golf Championship. Over 100 golfers from 14 countries took part in what was SGA’s most established regional junior golf tournament. The most significant moment was when our own Seletar juniors bagged the prize for Best Local Boy/Girl category. Credit must be given to Dave Wee and his team for their continuous contribution in the area of junior golf development in the Club. I would like to thank everyone for flying the Seletar flag high.

THE COMING EOGM Since April when we had our EOGM, we have been speaking with members on their concerns regarding the F&B renovation plan and top-up contributions. We went back to the drawing board and downscaled the F&B renovation works, which therefore reduced the development fee and members’ top-up contribution. These were shared with members at two Town Hall meetings held in May and July, and those present seemed to receive this positively.

Moving forward, what we need is members’ support for the MC to implement the top-up scheme. We need to move the redevelopment plans forward, as the clock is ticking on our side. It is already coming to the end of 2017, and as per regulations we must renew our lease before the end of next year. As such, we are calling for an EOGM on 9 October, and members will be receiving your Notice of EOGM soon. Once the resolution is passed at the EOGM, planning for the project implementation will go full scale and members will be kept updated on the progress.

CHANGES IN JACKPOT REGULATIONS

First up of course is the Oktoberfest coming up on 30 September – seats are limited at the Tavern, so do make your reservations early if you don’t wish to miss the party with the ever-popular Swiss Alpines Lions Band. Members truly enjoyed our Christmas Bazaar and sing-along caroling last year, so we are bringing them back. Look forward to more festive fun and irresistible Christmas deals right at our main clubhouse lobby – this time complete with sweet treats and fun craft workshops for the family. As for the coming school holidays, look no further than Sensational Seletar – from martial arts classes, scuba diving lessons to overseas and educational trips – we have a list of exciting activities to keep you and your children entertained.

As you may have read in the papers, the Government is tightening up on jackpot regulations and operations in line with their policies on problem gambling. Management is studying the new requirements with the help of the Ministry of Home Affairs and National Council on Problem Gambling. With the new laws implemented, we expect our revenues to be affected and changes in the way we operate the Jackpot Room when the new restrictions take effect from 1 November 2017. Though this may inconvenience members somewhat, we seek your understanding on the matter.

Last but not least, I am proud to announce that Seletar Country Club was most recently voted Singapore’s “Third Best Golf Course” in Golf Digest Golf Course Rankings 2017. This marks another significant milestone for the Club and is testimony of the hard work put in by the Green Sub-Committee and Management team in shaping a beautiful and challenging golf course well enjoyed by both members and guests. I would like to thank all those who are involved in placing Seletar Country Club amongst Singapore’s top three golf courses.

Changes made are as follows: 1. Members will no longer be allowed to bring guests into the Jackpot Room.

CHANGES IN JACKPOT OPERATIONS With effect from 1 November 2017, the Club will be making some changes to our jackpot operations. This is in view of the latest rules and regulations set by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), which strictly requires fruit machine operators to meet the set criteria before a license permit can be obtained. The Club is currently awaiting official approval from authorities for our license permit for jackpot operations. Members should expect further changes in the future in order to comply with official regulations.

2. Entry to the Jackpot Room will be restricted to members who are 21 years and above, provided they have held the membership for at least a year. 3. Operating hours will be changed to 10am-10pm daily as jackpot machines cannot be operated later than other recreational facilities. 4. ATMs, Electronic Funds Transfer, Point of Sale (EFTPOS) systems and credit card facilities will be removed altogether in the Jackpot Room. 5. All future publicity materials related to jackpot will only be shown in the Jackpot Room. 6. Members who wish to enter the Jackpot Room have to be subjected to checks against the National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG) database for any NCPG relevant exclusion status. 7. The Club will be included under the list for exclusion on the NCPG website. 8. The Club will implement a self-exclusion scheme for members who do not wish to use the Jackpot Room with effect from May 2018. 9. The Club will disallow entry to members who have been excluded and will carry out this procedure by May 2018.

To improve members’ experience at the karaoke rooms, upgrading works will be carried out at both the main Karaoke Hall and private room. The new look will be relaunched on 17 October 2017. Our current Karaoke rooms have been untouched since it was first built, and a facelift is much needed to provide members with comfort and enjoyment while singing along to their favourite tunes. Members can look forward to upgraded amenities and brand new furniture once the upgrading is completed. With a new day and night lighting system, members can also look forward to holding private functions in the karaoke hall! Having worked in the IT industry for 14 years, Thanika is your go-to IT man. At the Club, he is responsible for overseeing IT projects as well as bringing in new technological tools to optimise business operations and increase productivity.

The newest face in the membership department is Wan-Yi, who takes charge of billing matters and membership fees in the Club. Having graduated from RMIT University with a degree in Economics and Finance the year before, she is especially familiar with numbers.

Having graduated with a Diploma in Hotel Management, Felicia is our newlyjoined golf receptionist. This petite girl, who is only 19 years old, can always be found with a smile on her face. She is fondly known by her colleagues and golfing members for her warm and endearing personality.

With an MBA degree under his belt, this assistant manager is especially driven and results oriented. In his free time, he makes the effort to hone his skills in Cloud Computing. Thanika is also a strong advocate for constant learning and the power of action. As he puts it simply, “You cannot change the world by saying something, but you can change the world by doing something.”

Don’t be fooled by her serious demeanour though. This membership executive can sometimes be found singing in the office to hype up an otherwise dreary work day. Other hobbies include bantering with her “favourite person in the office”, fellow membership executive, Stella Phua. Wan-Yi is also a big fan of meat, so if you ever do catch her at the Seletar Terrace, you can go ahead and guess what she will be having for lunch!

Felicia has a passion for the service industry as she acknowledges the importance of good customer relations. Interacting with the members on a daily basis, she notes that they are a friendly bunch who would not hesitate to lend a helping hand. Do remember to stop by and say hi to her should you happen to pass by the golfing reception!

They showed great composure in handling the situation by rendering first aid and informing the member’s family before calling for the ambulance. TOWNHALL MEETING Following the April EOGM and May Forum with Social members, the Management Committee (MC) held a Town Hall Meeting with Ordinary and Social members on Saturday 1 July. Over 170 members turned up for the meeting, which started promptly at 9am with Chairman Cheah Kim Teck giving an update on the latest development with the lease renewal application.

The Chairman of Development and Projects Sub-Committee Tan Chee Kiang then revealed the Club’s revised renovation plans for the Seletar Terrace, Tavern and Seletar Room, and the scope of works that have been reduced in order to come up with several permutations to moderate the project’s development fee. This will have an impact on members’ top-up contribution, which Chairman assured members is estimated at $7,000 to $8,000 per Ordinary member. Captain then went on to explain the mandatory works that will have to be undertaken for the golf course, especially considering additional requirements from NParks for the public access walking trail. Captain and the MC assured members that the renovation works for the golf course would take priority as we strive to maintain its current character and challenge, while at the same time attempting to renew the F&B facilities which function as a social hub for members, their families and guests. Treasurer then shared the Club’s revised financial plans and assured members that the Finance Sub-Committee will ensure the Club is kept in good financial health throughout the renovation projects, and stressed on the support required from members for the revised top-up contribution. The meeting ended with a lunch catch-up where members got to share their ideas and feedback further with MC members.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING The 29th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of Seletar Country Club was held on Thursday 13 July with 95 members in attendance. The meeting started promptly at 6.30pm at the Seletar Room, with Chairman thanking members for their support for the Clubâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s events, activities and F&B promotions in the past year, and members of the Management and sub-committees who have put in endless hours to make the Club vibrant. Members then approved the minutes of the last AGM and MCâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s recommendation to continue the services of our external auditor for the following financial year. With no other matters for discussion, the meeting adjourned promptly with a delectable dinner for all present.

CHOKED DRAINAGE AND BURST PIPES

ISSUANCE OF COURSE TICKETS FOR WEEKDAY TIMESHEET With effect from 1 August 2017, course tickets will be issued to golfers who are not using buggies during time-sheet on weekdays.

On 1 August 2017, repair works were carried out for drainage pipes choked at Hole 16 Fairway Bunker. Two water pipes also burst on 26 July 2017, one at Hole 15 Ladies Tee Box and the other at Hole 12 Fairway. With these sub-soil pipes identified as way past its lifespan, such occurrences are expected to be numerous and frequent. In order to cut down on such incidents, all sub-soil drainage and irrigation pipes needs to be replaced when the golf course undergoes upgrading works in the future.

Golfers will have to present the course ticket to the Starter before tee-off.

TEAM SELETAR COMES OUT TOPS!

It was not the easiest of paths en route to the final knockout round of the SGA Inter-Club League 2017 for Seletar Country Club. Ranked fifth out of 11 clubs, we were considered the outsiders going into the tournament. The top two clubs, also the defending champions and runners-up respectively for the 2016 tournament, were Tanah Merah Country Club (TMCC) and Singapore Island Country Club (SICC). Said Seletar Team Captain Andy Pang on our chances to win the League, “I told my team that we were just there to enjoy ourselves and play our personal best games. As for the final outcome, just leave it to fate.” The league competition kicked off on 9 April 2017. Despite facing golfing powerhouses TMCC and Raffles Country Club (RCC) in the early rounds, our Seletar golfers remained unfazed and performed exceptionally. We lost narrowly to TMCC 7-8 before edging out RCC by a score of 8-7. We then went on to win the rest of our games, exacting revenge on top seed TMCC. We ousted them with a score of 8.5-6.5 to earn a place in the final knockout round against National Service Resorts Country Club (NSRCC). Andy added, “The win was especially sweet as TMCC is a strong team. We learnt our lesson from the loss to them in the group stages and trained really hard after that. It was worth it.”

The final knockout round was held at Laguna Country Club on 23 July. It was a day that saw some of Team Seletar’s best putts. Despite going down 0-2 in the “Premier” Division and drawing 2-2 in the “Ladies” Division, Team Seletar recorded 2-1 victories in the “Senior” Division as well as “A” Division. Our “B” Division had the best results, beating NSRCC 3-0 to help claim the crown.

When asked about what contributed to our league win, Andy was quick to point out Seletar supporters’ role. During the final knockout round, big banners were held up by our supporters amidst constant cheering. He said, “I personally felt that our supporters played a big part in our win. Their presence and encouraging messages greatly boosted our players’ morale each time they approached a shot. You could really see the motivation and confidence it gave them.” Kudos to our supporters for personifying the Seletar Spirit and for playing a big part in our win! Team Captain Andy Pang used just one word to summarise the team’s feelings after the win, “high”. He also spoke about the great team spirit they had leading up to the final game. “The team has given me so much faith and confidence throughout the tournament. It was easy to see the enthusiasm and commitment in every single one of them. Winning the Championship is just awesome.” In preparation for this competition, the team had organised training sessions at the practice range to sharpen their game play and to facilitate team bonding, stressing on the need to understand each other’s strengths and weaknesses. This was the first time that Seletar Country Club had won the SGA Inter-Club League and the win was definitely a moment to savour for everyone on the team. The moment it was confirmed that we had claimed the title, the team went crazy with a rousing rendition of “We are the Champions” and capped it off with a champagne shower celebration together with the supporters. We look forward to seeing our defending champions in action next year and congratulations once more on a job well done! Our golfers have indeed done us proud!

Putting their golf clubs to good use

Age is just a number. Ask anyone present at the Seletar Senior Golf Day and they would definitely agree. The event, held on 12 July 2017, attracted a full turnout of 144 golfers. Some of them gamely posed for photos with age defying jump shots or acrobatic swings with their golf clubs. It was hard to believe that all of the participants were aged 55 and above!

The play format was based on Two Ball Texas Scramble. Working in pairs, Albert Low and Ong Bee Chuan had the best start after 9 holes, hitting a total of 26 points. Penny Ng and Jean Loh came in close behind, managing 25 points. Kathy Oh and Johnny Neo posted 22 points for the first nine, followed by 27 points for the second nine, putting them in first position overall with a total of 49 points. This was enough for them to claim victory. Pretty in pink!

Dance like nobody’s watching… or are they?

When asked about their triumph despite a slow start, Johnny said, “We never expected to win! But it was a great feeling of course. When we started at Hole 15, Kathy parred the hole where we had a 2-stroke allowance and we felt on top of the world.” He added that the Seletar atmosphere was a warm and friendly one where he was more concerned with having fun and enjoying the good company. However, Johnny had a secret weapon when it came to golfing victory. “Drinking whiskey,” he said. “Maybe it helps!”

As the competition concluded, golfers proceeded for dinner in the Seletar Room, with Seletar Band providing background music as they reveled in the camaraderie of the Seletar Spirit. The prize presentation and lucky draw was a dynamic affair, with winners showing off their spunky dance moves as they collected their Transview vouchers and other gifts. Whoever said that being young had anything to do with age?

The Purrfect Getaway

Kuching is the capital of Sarawak, which also means “cat” in Malay. 49 of our golfers took a trip there from 23 to 27 July 2017. In total, our golfers played in 3 different golf courses, Damai Country Club, Samarahan Country Club as well as Kelab Golf Sarawak. The reciprocal agreement between Seletar Country Club and Samarahan Country Club was also signed during the trip, allowing Seletar golfers the opportunity to play on their challenging par 72 golf course when they drop by Sarawak in the future!

Toasting to a durian good time!

SEGAMAT INTER-CLUB GOLF FRIENDLY Over the weekend of 12 and 13 August 2017, 18 of our Seletar golfers made the trip down to Segamat, Malaysia. Led by Captain Ismail Taha, our team was there for an annual friendly game of golf with Segamat Country Club. On the first day, our golfers took part in a practice session followed by dinner. The actual golf game took place the next morning, where golfers David Yeo and Steven Ong came in first for Seletar Country Club with a score of 68 points. Koo Yam Fah and Wilfred Ng clinched second place with a score of 57 points while Ng Tiong Aik and partner Roger Lim managed 54 points to claim third position. For Ng Tiong Aik, the high point of his game was registering a birdie at Hole 8. When asked about this achievement, he said, “It felt very good and I was super happy! But the main

thing I enjoyed about this trip was the friendship we shared with one another. The Seletar Spirit is definitely going strong!” The post-game lunch was followed by the host’s traditional offering of local durians as a token of friendship for our golfers. It was definitely the highlight of this trip as everyone savoured the soft and tasty King of fruits. Tiong Aik added, “Our hosts were really hospitable and fantastic for entertaining us the entire day, and the golf game was great but the durians might just be the reason why we all took the trip in the first place! It was just so good!” For the durian lovers out there, you know where to go to find them now!

The annual Captain’s and Lady Captain’s Prize is back! This year, it took place on Saturday, 19 August and went down in our golfing calendar as one of the main highlights of 2017. Following tradition, golfers were treated to a sumptuous feast of durians at the Starter’s Hut before the event officially kicked off. Many raved about the quality of the durians this year, noting that the flesh had just the right amount of sweetness to it. A few of them even commented that the durians were the main attraction of the event! The hot and humid weather did nothing to dampen spirits as golfers savoured the durians.

We then saw some of Seletar’s best compete with each other when the event commenced. Some golfers, like David Foo, John Yong, Raymond Toh and William Tay, just came off an emphatic win in the SGA Inter-Club League earlier in July. Raymond Toh repeated his winning feat by posting a score of 40 points to clinch top position. At the Ladies’ Division, Vicki Tan emerged as the big winner with her score of 39 points. Although nobody drove home the Hole-In-One grand prize of a Kia Cerato K3, there were many other prizes in store for golfers when they proceeded to the Seletar Room for dinner.

The theme for the night was Peranakan, with Peranakan style décor in place as well as traditional food to delight golfers’ palate. Lady golfers dressed to the nines in their splendid kebayas and even performed a short dance in front of everyone to mark their entrance!

Before the lucky draw prizes were announced, Captain Ismail Taha addressed everyone present and thanked sponsors for their generosity in providing golfers with the top quality durians. Lady Captain Angelia Lim summed up the event best of all during her short speech to the golfers. She said, “Although this may sound cheesy, but this event would not have been possible without each and every one of you. So here’s a big thank you to everyone present.” It was indeed a day that showcased the vibrant Seletar Spirit and definitely one to remember.

Bowled Over by THE SELETAR SPIRIT Our recent 9-Pin Tap Bowling Tournament held on 2 July 2017 was an event entrenched in solidarity. Bowlers of different ages battled it out for the coveted men’s and women’s crowns, yet the overall atmosphere remained friendly. The ladies matched each other neck for neck, with Susie Ng narrowly edging out Jessie Fu by a mere 12 pinfalls after rolling 10 games. Third placed Lily Lim missed out on the grand prize by 22 pinfalls. Despite the close fight, the ladies were often seen giving each other words of encouragement. Over at the men’s category, national bowler and 2015 SEA games gold-medallist Howard Saw raced to a clear win by a total of 197 pinfalls, leaving nearest competitor Marcus Lian behind. When asked about his clear-cut win, Howard said, “I am very happy with my results as I have broken my personal 9-pin record. However, my competitors constantly kept me on my toes especially when my scores dipped in the fifth game and 4 or 5 of them caught up with me. It was not as straightforward as it looked.”

What struck Howard most about the tournament, however, was the friendly Seletar Spirit. He added, “I am especially drawn to the bond and family spirit of the Club; most of us are familiar with each other and the camaraderie was very strong. I will definitely participate in future Seletar bowling events!” Awards were also given out separately to Jason Chua, Ethan Tia and Ehren Chua for scoring perfect games of 300 pinfalls. Overall, it was definitely an event which got our competitors bowled over!

Besides an enjoyable day golfing on our beautiful Seletar golf course, they enjoyed a delicious dinner spread at our Seletar Room. Mr Baey attended the dinner and presented the cheque of a generous donation of $10,000 to the Lions Befrienders, a voluntary welfare organisation with a mission to provide care for the elderly.
