Advantages & Disadvantages of knitting

The technique of knitting is the second most popular method used by people to form a fabric or a garment. Knitting involves the inter-looping of one or more set of yarns. Either by using hands or a knitting machine, we convert a continuous length of yarn into the vertically intermeshed loops and finally into knitted apparel. The length of a loop is the most fundamental parameter of a knitted fabric. We can easily vary the loop length during the process of knitting by changing the process as well as yarn parameters of the machine. There are some other parameters of a knitted fabric such as wales per inch, courses per inch, stitch density, tightness factor and GSM etc. which are also essential for determining the quality of the fabric.

Types of knitting: There are two basic types of knitting: 1. Weft knitting: In this type of knitting, we form loops one after another in a weftways direction, thus finally resulting in the formation of a knitted fabric. 2. Warp knitting: In warp knitting, there occurs simultaneous formation of loops from the set of warp yarns.

Needles used in knitting: Most commonly used needles for the technique of knitting are as follows: 1. Latch needle 2. Compound needle 3. Bearded needle

Types of Knitting Machines: 1. Machines with individually driven needles: We can further classify these knitting machines into flat-bed and circular knitting machines. 2. Needle Bar machines: We can divide these machines into warp and weft types of devices.

Our company is one of the chief knitting machine exporters in India.

Requirements for preparing yarn to knit fabric: For the process of yarn preparation, we need a cone, not cheese. 1. It is essential to maintain a constant yarn tension throughout the process of knitting. If we use cheese for unwinding the yarn, the yarn will get rubbed on cheese surface due to which tension may vary. 2. Instead of using cheese, it is always better and comfortable to utilize a cone for unwinding the yarn. 3. During cone winding, the role of the waxy roller is essential. If the yarn gets contacted with the knitting needles, then the yarn can get damaged, or the needles may get broken. 4. The cone winding machine should always run at a slow speed; otherwise, the tension will not be uniform. 5. If we want to use a high-speed winding machine, then it will be better to employ cotton combed yarn for the process of knitting. 6. Consider using electronic yarn clearer. 7. There should be a separate drive both for the drum and the package. 8. For yarn preparation, we also need pneumatic splicing. 9. We will also require an additive type of tensioner so that what may be the variation in input tension, the output tension will compensate for it by using Amontons law principle. 10. For maintaining the same tension throughout the whole process, there is also the need for an unwinding accelerator or the balloon breaker.

Yarn properties required for knitting:

1. Flexural rigidity: We can easily bend the yarn which has low flexural rigidity. 2. Torsional rigidity: Yarns having a low torsional rigidity will work better in the process of knitting.

Advantages of knitting: 1. We can manufacture the fabric by utilizing the minimum number of yarns, even only one yarn. 2. In the process of knitting, one can easily manage the extensibility as well as the stability of the fabric. 3. We can achieve the desirable compactness of the fabric. 4. Knitted fabrics impart more freedom of movement and comfort to the wearer. 5. When we manufacture the fabric by the technique of knitting, then there occurs the minimum wastage of yarn. 6. By the process of knitting, we can quickly produce those fabrics which are very much fit for intimate wears as well as for the technical application. 7. We can give a desired shape to the resultant structure at the time of knitting. 8. We can vary the number of yarns which we are going to knit in the same fabric by selection. 9. Knitting offers us with a large number of design possibilities. 10. Knitted fabrics are highly permeable due to which air can easily enter into these garments. Therefore, knitted apparels are very useful in summers.

Disadvantages of knitting: 1. Knitted fabrics offer lower dimensional stability than that of the woven fabrics.

2. It will be challenging to produce glass fabrics by the technique of knitting because bending rigidity will be higher. But by utilizing the process of weaving, we can quickly create glass fabric. 3. Knitting machines offer us with a low count range, but a weaving device is a versatile machine which can produce any count of fabrics.

Essential properties of knitted stuff: 1. Weft knitted fabrics offer high extensibility with incomplete elastic recovery whereas warp knitted apparels are less extensible with better elastic recovery than that of weft knitted garments. 2. Knitted fabrics provide high tear strength. 3. Apparels manufactured by the process of knitting have high crease resistance. 4. Knitted garments are thick and therefore, suitable to wear in winters. 5. When we talk of bending length, then knitted fabrics provide us with low bending capability as compared to that of woven garments. 6. Though knitted apparels offer us with high bending modulus and permeability, they have low tensile strength.
