Abstract By investigating and analyzing the learning motive, methods, and understanding on employment among Chinese and Japanese postgraduate students, this study established a logit model by which the effect levels of each factor affecting the employment of Japanese or Chinese graduate students are calculated. The paper also analyzed the main reasons causing the differences and provided some preliminary suggestions on how to positively study and improve the postgraduate education system.

is 38,500 students higher than the number in the previous year. Graduate enrollment has reached new heights, with postgraduate entrance examinations constantly gaining popularity. All signs indicate the different characteristics and rules between Chinese and Japanese postgraduate education (Wang 2001).

Thus, a survey is conducted in this study to identify the differences between Chinese and Japanese postgraduate students on enrollment motivation, learning patterns, and social awareness on the effect of various factors and to analyze the reasons behind these differences.

Introduction

Data

Postgraduate education in Japan and in other countries has shown the inverse relationship between changes in the number of graduate students and the gross national product. When the economy undergoes rapid development, the increase in employment opportunities contributes to the slow increase in the number of postgraduate students, whereas when economic development is slow, the intense competition in obtaining employment rapidly increases the number of postgraduate students (Cai 1996).

This study involved all graduates at the Agricultural Economics Department in the University of Tsukuba in Japan (total of 24) and randomly selected 50 postgraduate students at the Agricultural Economics Department in the China Agricultural University for the survey interview. The interviews were conducted from April 15 to May 26, 2012. The questions asked included the main reason for pursuing a master's degree, perceptions on employment and on main factors in selecting a career such as whether to engage in further study (a doctor’s degree), perceptions on school specializations, and understanding on the relationship between high-level education and high employment rates and so on.

In 1990, the number of doctorate graduates was 11,300, which rapidly increased in 2003 to 136,700. As of 2011, postgraduate enrollment increased at an average rate of more than 26.9%, which was attributed to the increase in the national postgraduate recruitment of up to 527,800 that
