Foreword
“Cuentos solidarios” (“Solidarity stories”) is a sociocultural Project promoted by the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and MAPFRE Guanarteme Foundation. Its main goal is to publish children’s tales with charitable purposes. With this idea in mind, both institutions launch a public call each year which is open to anyone born or residing in Gran Canaria and willing to share with us his/her story in order to help others. The supportive essence of this project is shared by writers, illustrators and translators alike. All of them lend us their benevolent collaboration each year to carry hope and further stimulus to organizations, Community Service Projects, and NGOs based in the Canary Islands or in the African continent.
El certamen Cuentos Solidarios es un proyecto sociocultural, promovido por la Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria y la Fundación MAPFRE Guanarteme, que tiene como finalidad la publicación de relatos infantiles con fines benéficos. Con este objetivo, ambas instituciones realizan anualmente una convocatoria pública abierta a cualquier persona, canaria o residente en Canarias, que quiera compartir una historia para ayudar a otras personas. La naturaleza solidaria de este proyecto no solo está presente en quienes los escriben, también en quienes los ilustran y traducen, ya que todos ellos participan cada año de manera totalmente altruista para llevar, con los beneficios obtenidos por la venta del relato ganador, esperanza e ilusión a organizaciones, proyectos sociales u organizaciones no gubernamentales que desarrollen su actividad en la comunidad canaria o en el continente africano. 7
Los habitantes de la orilla, es el relato ganador de la X edición de este certamen. Su autora, Loreto Felipe Sánchez-Infante, nos presenta una apasionante y entretenida aventura, con algún que otro guiño autobiográfico, para sensibilizar a pequeños y mayores sobre la importancia del respeto y cuidado del medio ambiente para la preservación de nuestros ecosistemas y la supervivencia de todas las especies. Loreto Felipe ha decido que los beneficios íntegros de venta de este cuento se destinen a la Asociación EcoMEI, fundada en 2015, para el desarrollo de proyectos de carácter medioambiental que favorezcan la circularidad de residuos difíciles de reciclar, transformándolos en materias primas para la fabricación de nuevos objetos y evitando que acaben en los vertederos de Canarias. “The Inhabitants of the Coast” has been awarded the first prize of the 10th edition. Her author, Loreto Felipe Sánchez-Infante, leads us through a passionate, amusing adventure, with autobiographical overtones, to raise awareness amongst young and the not-so-young, of the importance of respecting and caring for the environment if we really want to preserve our ecosystems and the survival of the species. Loreto Felipe has decided to grant all the sales profits to EcoMEI. Founded in 2015, this Association was created with the objective of developing environmental projects to favor the reuse of disposables, processing them into raw materials amenable to be later manufactured into new goods. Thus, they are exempt from ending up in the Canarian dumpsites. To learn more about EcoMEI please visit its web site www.ecomei.org. The University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and MAPFRE Guanarteme Foundation are fully committed to the noble values inspiring this volume, all of them synchronized with the UNESCO sustainable development goals of the 2030 Agenda. Nuestro más sincero agradecimiento a todas las personas que han formado parte de este proyecto. Esperamos que Los habitantes de la orilla, junto con los nueve títulos anteriores que componen esta colección, sigan despertando el espíritu solidario de muchas personas y las anime a participar con sus historias en la XI edición del concurso Cuentos Solidarios.
from its respective scope of action, have promoted numerous initiatives to contribute to the future achievement of these goals. We cannot turn a deaf ear to the powerful eco-message this tale contains for it cautions us about our key role, that of the human race, if we want to achieve a balanced and harmonious coexistence with our surroundings. Only by doing so, will we be able to build a future in which environmental sustainability won’t be one more tale of fiction, but a reality. Our most sincere gratitude to every single one of the persons that have made this project come true. We hope that “The Inhabitants of the Coast,” together with the remaining 9 tales comprising this collection, may continue to inspire principles of solidarity on many others while inviting them to actively participate by submitting their stories within the framework of the 11th edition of “Cuentos solidarios” (“Solidarity stories”).

Los autores About the Authors
e llamo Loreto y nací en Madrid un martes de primavera repleto de flores. Cofundadora del Club ECHO y coleccionista de historias. Un garabato con patas. Mientras trabajo, soy ingeniera, el resto del tiempo, cuentista y viajera, un ave migratoria que aletea sin rumbo fijo en busca de aventuras, desde los rincones más alucinantes de la sabana africana hasta el fondo de los océanos más profundos. Seguí miguitas de pan hasta Gran Canaria, que me atrapó con su eterno verano y el calor de su gente. La playa hizo el resto... me enamoró. Desde entonces, disfruto del cabello ensalitrado y la vida en cholas, luchando cada día contra la contaminación plástica para hacer de este paraíso un lugar mejor.

dam Hopley es licenciado en Filología Inglesa y Ciencias de la Información y posee un doctorado en Literatura Inglesa del siglo XVII. Hopley ha trabajado además como tutor de seminarios en la Universidad de Loughborough en el Reino Unido, y desde 2014 como profesor de inglés en Gran Canaria. Tiene experiencia en los exámenes de Cambridge en todos los niveles, ha trabajado en traducciones de conferencias y colaborado en trabajos de investigación para el CHU Materno-Insular. Más recientemente ha obtenido un puesto como docente en el ejército español.

y name is Loreto and I was born in Madrid on a spring Tuesday filled with flowers. I am cofounder of the ECHO CLUB and collector of stories. I work as an engineer but the rest of my free time I devote to inventing stories and travelling: a migrant bird that flaps its wings in search of adventures, from the most fascinating places in the African savannah, to the bottom of the deepest oceans. I followed the breadcrumb trail to the island of Gran Canaria, which fully captivated me with its eternal summer and the warmth of its people. The beach made the rest... I fell in love with it. From that moment onwards, I enjoy life with my hair covered with sea salt and strolling around in flip flops. This while fighting against plastic pollution to make of this Paradise a better place.

dam Hopley holds a Bachelor's Degree in English and Media Studies and a Ph.D. in seventeenth-century English Literature. He has worked as a seminar tutor at Loughborough University in the UK, and since 2014 as an English teacher on Gran Canaria. He has experience of Cambridge examinations at every level, and he has been involved with translations of conference material and assisting with research papers for the the CHU Materno-Insular. More recently he has had teaching post with the Spanish military.
