00. INTRO

The benefits of tourism have an important impact throughout the economy. Moreover, the sector significantly contributes to GDP, employment and towards covering the trade deficit. These aspects are stressed whenever the opportunity arises.

According to a recent World Travel & Tourism Council report, the Greek tourism sector:

3,5x is growing 3.5 times faster than the Greek economy

20,6% accounts for 20.6% of Greece’s GDP, compared to the global figure of 10.4%

27,9% was enhanced with 18.5 billion euros from international visitor spending, an amount which corresponds to 27.9% of total exports.

Taking into consideration the arrivals and income data for 2018 (almost 33 million arrivals and over 16.5 billion euros of direct travel revenue), the contribution to GDP is equally important for the economy. The outward orientation pursued by the sector during the crisis was one of the key parameters that allowed tourism to maintain its momentum throughout the difficult years and to continue doing so in 2018.
