Materialet är indelat enligt boken, dvs. i PART ONE, TWO, THREE och FOUR. Det finns extra övningar till samtliga delar i varje PART: Get ready, Read on, More than words, Get smart och Fact finder.

Go beyond: Cyberbullying Some years ago a kid taped himself swinging a golf ball retriever like a Star Wars lightsabre. A schoolmate found the video and put it on online. Many thought it was funny and soon the video spread around the world. After the video went viral, however, the boy was relentlessly bullied, so much so that he had to drop out of school and have years of therapy. Discuss cyberbullying in class. Has anybody ever been the victim? Does the fear of bullying make them afraid to post comments, upload pictures or post videos?

Vocabulary cards Use the vocabulary cards in various ways. Here are two examples. Explain and guess: Use either only the cards in English or both the English and Swedish cards. If you use both language versions, do not separate the English and Swedish equivalents – that way the students get bilingual cards. Divide the class into pairs or groups. Have the students take turns lifting 1 card at a time. The student explains the English word to the other student(s) in English who guess which words it is. Memory game: Divide the class into groups of four or five. Spread the cards on a desk face down. Take turns lifting 2 cards at a time to find pairs, English word – Swedish word. If you find a pair, you can keep it. If the two cards you turn aren’t a pair put them back and try to keep in mind where they were. Once all the cards are turned and pairs found, ask each student to tell a little story using the words he/she got.

Listening comprehension: The school’s new health plan On page 26 in the book, there is a listening comprehension exercise. Below is the audio script for the exercise. On the following pages are two gap-fill handouts for the same text. You can use either or both. If you use one of handout, have the student listen to the text and fill in the missing words. You can use the two handouts for pair work, however, as the handouts have different words missing; working in pair the students read out loud and fill in the missing blanks. The audio script below acts as the key to the gap-fill exercises.

Audio script The School’s new health plan Good morning, students of Woodbridge. I am happy to announce that our government has decided on financing rather an interesting experiment. As you might have heard, there are some schools in other countries that serve a hot meal to the students every day from Monday to Friday for free. I’ve heard that sometimes even a delicious dessert is included in the lunch. In many schools the students can sit and talk to their friends while having lunch. This makes the everyday school lunch a nice and social event everyone can enjoy. The school lunches include vegetables, fish, meat or chicken, salad and on occasion a fruit for dessert. In addition, the students have the possibility of buying a healthy, inexpensive snack every afternoon from the school cafeteria. The Department of Education is keen to know how such a lunch system would work. They have decided to support the plan and bring hot and healthy meals to each student in the London metropolitan area for free. If this trial turns out to be positive, the experiment will expand to include all of the schools in England. We are very happy that our school has been chosen for the trial. The student council told me this is just the thing we need to, quote, “kick the soda addiction and end the constant consumption of crisps”, end quote. The trial starts next month and we encourage you all to enjoy the free school lunches. Thank you and have a good day!

The talkers get individual cards with words. Give the judge all the cards. Let everybody read through the words and think a while. Then the talkers choose a topic, and start talking trying to use the words in their lists. The judge has to listen carefully and tick off each word in the lists used in the conversation. You can give a time limit to the conversations if you wish, 5–10 minutes, for example. The talkers should not show their words to their fellow talkers. LONDON, ATTRACTIONS GALORE London is one of the culture capitals of the world and is packed with exciting things to see and do. Take a breathtaking ride on the London Eye, watch the changing of the Queen’s Guards at Buckingham Palace, explore the amazing collections at the National Gallery, learn about the history of the city at the Tower of London, or be stunned by the spectacular Westminster Abbey. The London Eye is an observation wheel that allows you to see one of the world’s most exciting cities from a totally new perspective. It has turned out to be the most popular new attraction in London. It was built as part of the millennium celebrations and stands 135 metres over the city of London. It has nearly 4 million visitors every year. The ride only takes 30 minutes, but be prepared to queue a lot longer! England’s most famous royal palace, and the official residence of Queen Elizabeth II, is called Buckingham Palace. Many visitors gather outside the main gates to witness the Changing of the Guard, a military ceremony, and a tourist attraction taking place daily during the summer months. For those who are into history, culture and art, London has a lot to offer. The British Museum focuses on history and culture, and is one of the most visited museums in the world. The National Gallery is an art museum with paintings by world-famous painters like Vincent Van Gogh and Claude Monet. Both the British Museum and the National Gallery have free admission to all visitors. This makes history and art accessible to everyone. Tate Modern is the most visited modern art gallery in the world with works by Pablo Picasso and Andy Warhol, among others. The building itself, a former power station, is as much an attraction as its collections and exhibitions. Many of London’s most popular tourist attractions are historical sights dating back many, many years. The Tower of London is such an attraction. It dates back to 1066 and was built by William the Conqueror after defeating the English army at the Battle of Hastings. What used to function as a royal residence, fortress, prison and even a place for executing people is today mostly known as the castle housing the Crown Jewels and the Yeomen warders, popularly known as the Beefeaters. Westminster Abbey is a true medieval masterpiece. Its Gothic architecture with stained glass and beautiful decorations makes it the most stunning of London’s churches. It is a traditional site for coronations and burials of kings and queens. There are many graves under the floors of the abbey. However, make sure you don’t step on the tomb of The Unknown Warrior. He was an unidentified British soldier killed on a European battlefield during the First World War. Royal weddings also take place in Westminster Abbey. In 2011, Prince William and Kate Middleton were married here. Did you know? Jack the Ripper was a serial killer who operated on the streets of Whitechapel in the East End in London in the late 19th century. His victims were female prostitutes whom he cruelly murdered by cutting their throats and ripping up their bodies. The murders were never solved and the real identity of Jack the Ripper still remains unknown. Or does it?! Recent investigation breakthroughs claim the mystery has been solved and the identity of Jack the Ripper has been revealed. See if you can find new information on the case involving DNA tests, a scarf and a Finn! 66
