Study abroad Text 1
Want to study abroad? A checklist to planning your adventure So, you’ve decided that you want to take the plunge and study abroad. Awesome! Join the many students around the world studying in foreign countries. This is super exciting, but there might be a few questions running through your mind. What should you think of? Where to start planning it all? Here are a few pointers that can help you make your time abroad a great adventure.
First Steps 1. Decide where you want to go This may seem obvious but it makes all the difference. Make sure you are going to a city or a country you will enjoy living in. This can be based upon climate,
lifestyle, education, the language(s) spoken or the distance from your home country. If you are currently studying at a European university and planning to do an Erasmus exchange, then check with your university’s international department to see which universities yours has partner programs with. 2. Check the cost of living of your chosen destination
UNIT 1 – LIVE AND LEARN
Text 1
This is essential! You don’t want to be in for any nasty surprises. Make sure you know the average rental fees, as well as the cost of groceries, transport, eating out and drinks. There are many websites where you can find this information and even compare prices in different cities.
11
Text 1 Study abroad
UNIT 1 – LIVE AND LEARN
3. Research educational requirements Check if you are able to transfer the credits back to your home country’s universities in case you are going through a study abroad program. If you are doing a full degree abroad, research all the application requirements, including language requirements. Make sure you stick to the application deadlines! 4. Save up some money Studying abroad should be the time of your life. You won’t want to say no to something just because of money, so it’s best to save up so you can enjoy your experience fully. Studying abroad is so much more than only studying. It is also a time to travel, get to know your host country and meet new people. You’re going to learn to live on a student budget. Having a bit of money saved up will go a long way.
After Receiving Your Acceptance Letter 5. Take care of all the necessary paperwork Check if you need a visa or if you need to register in the host country upon arrival. Make sure you have health and travel insurance. (If you’re from a European country ask your local healthcare provider for a European Health Card.) Check the expiration date of your passport and re-read your acceptance letter from the host university to see if there are any important details there. 6. Look into the housing situation in the host country Check different ways to find accommodation. Perhaps the university offers housing to foreign students. Arriving in a new city without accommodation will make you waste time house hunting, time that you could instead spend meeting new people and exploring the city.
12
UNIT 1 – LIVE AND LEARN
Study abroad Text 1
8. Familiarise yourself with your host country This is going to be your home for your study abroad period, after all. Find out about the culture, customs, history, geography, cuisine etc. That way you will be able to get more out of your experience. 9. Research the support networks your host city provides to foreign students
7. Learn some of the local language before leaving If you are moving to a country where you don’t speak the language, then learning even a few basic phrases will make the first few days so much easier. It will also impress the locals. Depending on which country you’re going to, people might not speak much English. There are many free apps and websites where you can learn the basics of a new language.
Major European cities usually have Erasmus Student Network or other international student offices, where they organize excursions, cultural events and parties for foreign students in the city. You may even be able to ask for a ‘buddy’, a local volunteer who can help you settle in better. We hope this checklist will give you a head start in planning your forthcoming study abroad adventure. Good luck! Alice Kattago
