The topic of this unit is family and friends. The purpose is to practise the vocabulary for introducing yourself, your family, where and how you live and talking about your relatives. You will also learn something new about all the different kinds of families there are. Working with this unit will give you an opportunity to hopefully get to know yourself better as well. We will also be talking about different kinds of friend-

Meet My Family & Family Friends

The idea of family, like a lot of things, has changed and evolved over the centuries. In rural communities in the countryside for example,

When people in the 19th Century started moving into the cities,

Greetings from Seattle JAKE FROM SEATTLE Hi, My name is Jake Johnson and I am 13 years old. I live with my mom and little sister, Claire, who is 8 years old. I live in Seattle in an apartment building outside the city centre. My mother is a single parent. She is a doctor, so she works a lot. But when she doesn’t work, she makes time for us and takes us swimming at the local swimming pool or to get ice-cream. Last week our family got a new dog. It is so cute and my sister and I love playing with it. The dog has brown eyes and is a yellow Labrador retriever. At first, we talked about getting a cat or a hamster, but agreed that a dog would be more company. Every other week my sister and I stay with my father and his new family at their row house. My dad is a chef at a restaurant and my stepmother is a bus driver. She is usually nice and sometimes we get to ride with her on the bus. Our stepsister is much older than us, so she doesn’t live with my father and his new wife anymore. Our half-sister, my dad and stepmom’s baby girl, is only two years old. She can be super annoying when she doesn’t get what she wants. But other than that, we get along well. She is really cute and I like playing with her, but I don’t like when she tries to pull my hair, because it really hurts. When I’m not at school I like to draw and listen to music. My hobbies are playing the guitar and soccer (or football as it is also called). This year I even made the school soccer team! I have also played the piano since I was 8 years old.

Hi there, My name is Jane Walters. There is not really much to say about me. I’m just your regular, normal teenager.

amusement – nöje area – område backyard – bakgård, trädgård

I live in Oxford, England. It is a beautiful historical city, proud of its famous university. I am 13 and my closest family is my mum, dad and my big brother Archie who is 15. My parents met at a party when they both went to Oxford University. Mum is Jamaican and dad is originally from Scotland. At first mum had a hard time finding a job, but now she works as a school secretary. Dad owns his own second-hand bookshop and is sometimes a guest lecturer in literature at the university.

be into – vara intresserad av

We live in a detached house in a nice and quiet neighbourhood. Sometimes I take our pet bunny Bouncer (yeah, that horrible name was Archie’s idea not mine), out in the backyard so she can hop around for a while and enjoy the grass. But when she is inside she has to stay in her big cage. Archie and I often fight about whose turn it is to clean the cage.

horrible – fruktansvärd, hemsk

In my free time I like to go skateboarding and I also play the drums in a band. We haven’t had any gigs really, so we just play for our own amusement. I also love the theatre and so I have become active in our school drama club.

They moved here six years ago but before that they had a house in a suburb of San Francisco. Diego says it was a very nice area and that they often had barbeque parties with the neighbours. The 4th of July and Halloween especially were really huge celebrations according to him. He is really into playing computer games and draws his own comics. We often go riding around on our bikes with our friends.

G’day from Down Under ALEC FROM MELBOURNE

G’day mates, My name is Alexander Kelly, but everyone calls me Alec, for short. As you probably guessed by the greeting, I come from the lovely country down under, Australia. Well, actually, Melbourne to be more precise. So, let me introduce you to my family. There are seven people in my family – my two mums, my older sister Jane who is 23, younger brother Derek 12, and our two dads and of course me, the lovable 15 year old dork. Yes, I know, it’s not the most traditional of families, but there is a lot of fun and laughter in our big, crazy family. We have a semi-detached house that is situated on the outskirts of town. My mums and dads each live in one part of the house and we kids can come and go as we please between the two parts. So, for us it is a perfectly good arrangement. Oh, and don’t forget the possibility to negotiate a double allowance either! My mum Tracy is a car mechanic and my mum Kathy is an accountant. My dad Duncan works as a nurse at the hospital, while my other dad Sid also works as an accountant with Kathy. That is how the four of them met actually. My older sister recently moved into a rental studio apartment, which is perfect for me because I get to go there and hang out every once in a while when the house gets too loud. In my free time I usually just hang out with my mates Abby, Mark and Maddie and we go to the beach or have a barbeque.

Good day from Toronto, eh? AISHA FROM TORONTO

Hey, I am yours truly, Aisha Abbas, a 14-year-old Pakistani-Canadian teenager. I live in the city of Toronto so naturally I’m a huge fan of the Maple Leafs ice-hockey team. My immediate family consists of my mom and dad and my twin sister Maryam and our kid brother Aziz who is five. Everyone says he is the spitting image of my mother, which is actually true. Maryam and I, on the other hand, resemble our father. Both our parents are engineers, but I don’t think I will follow in their footsteps. I am much more into languages and want to be a teacher someday. We live downtown in a three-bedroom apartment, since my parents want to live close to their work and quite like the city centre. In my spare time I like to read and watch movies and since I am quite good with words (a.k.a. eloquent) I am also captain of the debate team in school. Maryam and I are both active in our school newspaper and Maryam is also a member of the school lacrosse team. Besides that, I just hang out with my friends at our local coffee shop. We have a lot of fun people watching and making up stories about the passers-by.
