Welcome to Charleston and the 41st Southeastern Wildlife Exposition. We have worked diligently and waited impatiently to gather artists, exhibitors, and attendees from across the United States for this special weekend of celebrating wildlife art and the sporting lifestyle.

SEWE is as important today as it has ever been, and the multifaceted mission of the organization is vitally important on many fronts. The effects on the genre of wildlife art, the scores of conservation organizations represented, and the economic impact throughout the region cannot be overstated.

The changes we make each year are balanced between what we will always be at our core, with how we evolve and remain significant within the realms of art and conservation. We are resolved to be a leader for both, and are able through your steadfast support.

We are pleased to welcome Ryan Kirby as the 2023 SEWE Featured Artist. Ryan is as authentic as they come. He is a conservationist and outdoorsman who brings life to his paintings through personal experience, and he represents all that SEWE hopes to share. We hope that as you peruse the Fine Art Gallery in The Charleston Place you find a piece that speaks to you, and discover the magic created in the personal experience between creator and collector.

SEWE has three continuous loops for ticket and badge holders and two VIP express shuttles for badge holders only. Shuttles are for your convenience but please note bus times can be unpredictable due to traffic. Many venues are walkable (see map). SEWE shuttles operate from 9:45 am through 30 minutes after close of show Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

SEWE shuttle is provided at no additional cost for SEWE ticket and badge holders during show hours.

We highly recommend using the free SEWE shuttle service. Ticket or badge required.

ADDITIONAL PARKING

Additional parking near Brittlebank will be available on February 18 & February 19 for a flat rate of $5. Follow signage on Lockwood Blvd. to the lot behind the police station on Fishburne Street.

Parking is very limited in Charleston. Ride share and carpooling are strongly advised.

A 2021 winner of Outsider magazine’s Breaking Barriers Award, Smith will also share more about his nonprofit’s efforts to make hunting and fishing more inclusive. Edward Nickens and Dr. Jennifer Rehage, director of the Rehage Laboratory of Coastal Fish Ecology & Fisheries at Florida International University, for a spirited exploration of how nearshore angling for bonefish, tarpon, permit, redfish, and snook is changing in surprising—and even exciting—ways. Rehage, a newly elected board member of the Bonefish & Tarpon Trust, has been involved in some of the most progressive saltwater fisheries studies of the last decade, an insight she’ll share in this discussion. This event is hosted at the G&G offices in Charleston’s historic Cigar Factory and paired with creative cocktails and good company.

Meet Ryan Kirby

Ryan Kirby believes that as an artist he has a unique role and responsibility of bringing the outdoors to the indoors.

Ryan grew up in Illinois, where he and his brother were the direct beneficiaries of growing up on a family farm. Like a hammer to a carpenter or ball to an athlete, from the time Ryan Kirby first picked up a paintbrush, there was no question what his craft would be. Kirby was born an artist. And once old enough to venture deep into the woods of the family farm, his subject quickly became wild things.

Wild sunsets. Wild rivers. Wild animals.

It takes a trained eye to recreate the way sunlight bounces off a deer antler, or to perfectly place a thousand feathers as a tom turkey lunges forward into a thunderous gobble.

For Kirby, the training takes place on his hunting adventures – each morning in the field used as a time to watch, listen, and learn.

From the wilds of Alaska, to the Rocky Mountains, to the Heartland of his home state of Illinois, Kirby has traveled far and wide to see fur, feathers, trees and water differently than the rest of us…and the same. The same adrenaline that’s pulsed through the veins of hunters for generations is what makes Kirby tick. Only his purpose for being there is different. He is an artist - charged by God to preserve on canvas His wild places and wild things.

There’s a spiritual connection between the brush, the animal, and the scene. Through Kirby’s hand, moments in time are captured forever – to be re-lived by those who gaze upon the canvas.

As an American outdoor adventurer, television personality and wildlife biologist, Forrest Galante will entertain and enlighten SEWE patrons with live presentations. Galante hosts Discovery Channel’s flagship Sharkweek every year, and now has multiple wildlife shows on the air, including Mysterious Creatures with Forrest Galante and Extinct or Alive.

Busch Wildlife Sanctuary

Gaillard Center

Busch Wildlife Sanctuary, a longtime SEWE favorite, is returning to fascinate crowds with its always entertaining and educational live animal shows.

The Busch Wildlife staff will introduce the wonders of the natural ecosystems and give SEWE attendees an up-close and personal look at alligators, bobcats, foxes, birds of prey, snakes and more. The presentation will focus on the natural history of the animals while discussing ecology, conservation, endangered species and urban wildlife.

The Busch Wildlife Sanctuary, of Jupiter, Florida, rehabilitates sick, injured and orphaned wild animals, and educates the public about nature, wildlife and environmental issues while promoting wildlife and habitat conservation. As one of the country’s leading environmental education and wildlife rehabilitation facilities, Busch provides care to over 5,000 wild animal patients, returning the recovered animals to their natural habitats annually.

Wings Over Water

Gaillard Center

Wings Over Water, a film coproduced by Ducks Unlimited and narrated by award-winning actor Michael Keaton, will showcase the importance of the Prairie Pothole Region of North America as a breeding and nesting habitat for birds. Through stunning visual storytelling, Wings Over Water will draw attention to this oftenoverlooked region and what it means for North American wildlife. After the film, there will be a Q & A with the film’s producers.

The NMMF will showcase three short films featuring NMMF-led conservation stories at the Gaillard Center during SEWE weekend. These showings will include a panel discussion and Q&A featuring NMMF scientists and veterinarians.

Avian Conservation Center and Center for Birds of Prey

The Avian Conservation Center / Center for Birds of Prey was founded in 1991 as the Charleston Raptor Center as a medical treatment facility for injured birds of prey. The name of the organization evolved in 1994 to the South Carolina Center for Birds of Prey, and in 2002 to the umbrella Avian Conservation Center with the Center for Birds of Prey as its principal operating entity, all to more accurately reflect the growing disciplines, reach and influence of the organization. As the nonprofit organization marked its 30th year in 2021, it is primarily focused in four defined areas:

AVIAN HEALTH

The professional treatment of injured birds is a source of incomparable insight into critical environmental issues. The Avian Medical Clinic currently treats more than 800 injured raptors and shorebirds each year, releasing the majority back to their natural habitat. Although the causes of injuries vary widely, nearly all are human-related - ranging from gunshot wounds to collisions, electric shock from power lines, and toxicity. The medical functions of the Center operate on a 365-day basis. Injured birds are admitted from a continually widening geographical area.

CONSERVATION EDUCATION

The educational programs of the Center are offered within two general formats: on-site and off-site. Each year, thousands of students are engaged in the Center’s science and natural history based educational programs. Decades of experience and evaluations consistently provided from educators demonstrate that these programs capture attention, enhance retention of subject material, and foster a renewed enthusiasm for learning – all of which

contribute to an overall improvement in academic performance. The experiential programs offered by the Center also promote an awareness and appreciation for the natural world and our respective roles as stewards in its preservation. The power and beauty of birds of prey cast them as unparalleled ambassadors in public education - exemplifying both the intellectual and ethical aspects of conservation management.

RESEARCH

Research and field studies combine with the objectives of the medical and educational programs to support the protection of wild bird populations and their critical habitat areas.

The Center has led and participated in groundbreaking scientific research including avian genetics, environmental toxins, and an ongoing study of endangered and threatened species in South Carolina such as the Swallow-tailed kite. The Center’s work is well recognized in connection with environmental threats like the emergence of avian vacuolar myelinopathy (AVM) among eagles and other birds, and mortality resulting from under regulated landfill substances. A “citizen science” approach to a number of initiatives encourages the public to become active contributors to wildlife conservation and raises public awareness of vital ecological issues.

SC OILED BIRDS TREATMENT FACILITY

The Avian Conservation Center is designated in the USCG Area Contingency Plan as the official repository for oiled birds in South Carolina and maintains situational readiness in this crucial role. Constructed with a grant from U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, the Center’s combined use Avian Medical Center / Oiled Bird Treatment Facility was completed in October 2007. The facility is designed and equipped to provide the highest quality medical care available for injured birds of prey and

shorebirds on a daily basis, and, as the only permanent avian treatment center of its kind on the Eastern seaboard, affords the most efficient response possible in the event of a contaminant spill affecting native bird populations and their fragile breeding habitats along the South Carolina coast.

The Avian Conservation Center/ Center for Birds of Prey has enjoyed long and productive relationships with Federal and State agencies and other relevant organizations since its inception. The Center has worked closely with the SC Department of Natural Resources in numerous areas over the years, including:

Support of law enforcement, providing consultation, evidence collection and storage, and forensic services.

• Formation of the SC Toxicity Working Group of which SCDNR is a participant, in response to bald eagle deaths in landfills

• Providing medical care to 13,000+ injured birds of prey and shorebirds

• As a training and instructional resource for SCDNR officers

• Fielding thousands of public inquiries regarding birds and other wildlife in support of SCDNR and associated public expectations

• Osprey nesting platforms and relocations where appropriate

• Contaminant spill preparedness and response

The Center is staffed by 8 full time and 4 part-time employees with more than 70 years of combined avian experience. The small but effective staff is supported by a league of extensively trained and dedicated volunteer staff members who contribute more than 15,000 hours every year. The current annual operating budget for the organization is $825,000, the majority of which comes from philanthropic sources.

Each year, thousands of birds in South Carolina are injured by collisions with automobiles and man-made structures, electrical shock, gunshots, poisoning, nest destruction and other human related causes. The Avian Conservation Center mitigates some of this damage to wildlife by admitting and treating hundreds of birds of prey and shorebirds each year, releasing the majority back to their natural habitat. The center’s professional medical staff, with the support of more than 15,000 volunteer staff hours, treats more than 800 injured birds of prey and shorebirds in its Medical Center each year.

Back by popular demand, Windy Knolls Farm owner and master trainer, Bill Coburn, will showcase the fascinating world of herding instinctive to the Border Collie breed.

For over 23 years Bill Coburn has been training and working with Border Collies. When he purchased his first dog he was advised to get a trained dog, but as Bill put it, “I was too hardheaded to do that.” So, with the help of a neighbor he trained his first dog on his own and the rest is history. Bill and his dogs have won many competitions

throughout the years, even one competition in Georgia where he could not communicate by voice commands.

All of Mr. Coburn’s dogs spend their days working sheep on Windy Knolls Farm in Laurens, South Carolina. Here’s your chance to see them do what they were born to do in person.

Watch his collies artfully muster sheep and ducks through various obstacles with only a whistle and a few commands throughout SEWE weekend.

One of SEWE’s most popular events, crowds will flock to Brittlebank Park to watch this popular high-flying, big-splashing competition. With a 40’ x 20’ tank, holding nearly 30,000 gallons of water, dogs of all kinds and skill levels will compete in water jumping competitions, including Big Air, Extreme Vertical and Speed Retrieve.

“Waves” of competition will be held throughout the day Friday through Sunday, with finals Sunday afternoon.

Coast to Coast: The Pacific Decoy Collection of Richard and Dorothy Wheeler

Richard and Dorothy Wheeler began collecting decoys in 1960 and were founding members of the Pacific Flyway Decoy Association. Their collection contains important examples by the region’s premier makers from Southern California up to British Columbia. Highlights include a George McLellan (1897-1887) flying brant, a Jerry Mastin (1880-1959) standing goose, The “Hi” Crandall (1892-1969) Sleepy Mallard Drake, and a Los Banos pintail drake, also known as a “West Coast Dudley.” The collection is meticulously documented and prominently featured in both of the West Coast’s preeminent decoy books. This is the greatest opportunity ever presented on the East Coast to view the best of the West.

SEWE SCULPTURE INITIATIVE

In May of 2019, the first seeds were planted in the Town of Mount Pleasant for a sculpture exhibit with plans to extend throughout the region. The SEWE sculpture exhibit at Mount Pleasant Waterfront Park was meant to be a cultural experience, as well as the beginning of what will become a trail throughout the Lowcountry. The sculptures of animals indigenous to the region could not have a more appropriate backdrop than the waters and marshes of the Cooper River. Teeming with wildlife, the Cooper’s tidal waters are a reminder of the rich habitat of our region and the importance of conservation and sustainability. Public sculpture is an important part of any community, providing access

to art for all, especially youth and the underserved. As has been proven with these six sculptures, it also provides a place for reflection and inspiration.

In 2021, the first public sculpture linking Mount Pleasant to Downtown, and creating the first leg of the trail, was unveiled. This permanent public sculpture in the Charleston Visitor Center, For Spacious Skies by Walter Matia, was donated to the City of Charleston by the SEWE Board of Directors and staff in honor of Bill Hall. The sculpture represents SEWE’s continued effort to promote public art, with the hopes of future works being placed throughout the Lowcountry in the coming years.

South Carolina Junior Duck Stamp CHARLESTON CO. LIBRARY

Each year kids from around the country have a chance to show off their artistic talents and learn about conservation with the Junior Duck Stamp Art Contest, a federal contest with a big prize: a commemorated special edition U.S. stamp.

The Southeastern Wildlife Exposition has continued its partnership with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources and the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service for the 2022-2023 South Carolina Junior Duck Stamp Contest, sponsored by Ducks Unlimited.

The SCDNR had managed the SC Junior Duck Stamp program through 2011, but because of budget cuts the program became at risk of being discontinued and other sources of funding had to be found. To ensure the program’s continuation, SEWE partnered with SCDNR in 2012 to assume the administration and Ducks Unlimited, the world leader in wetlands and waterfowl conservation, came on as the sponsor helping to keep the program available to more than 700,000 students in South Carolina.

The Junior Duck Stamp Art Contest is a dynamic educational program using both conservation and design principles to teach wetland habitat and waterfowl biology to children, K-12. The program provides an opportunity for students to artistically express their knowledge of the diversity, interdependence, and beauty of wildlife.

In 2022, more than 100 public, private and home-schooled South Carolina students participated. Competing in four grade groups (K-3, 4-6, 7-9, and 10-12), they created visually compelling

and biologically accurate drawings or paintings of eligible North American waterfowl species. Students were encouraged to include a conservation message with their artwork explaining what they learned from the program and to inspire others to participate in conservation.

In addition to twelve prize winners, an overall “Best of Show” was selected to represent South Carolina in the National Junior Duck Stamp Contest, where it competed with the winning entrants from all 50 states, the American Samoa and the Virgin Islands to become the 2022-2023 collective Federal Junior Duck Stamp. Sold by the U.S. Postal Service and other vendors, all proceeds from the Stamp sales help support environmental and conservation education efforts.

SEWE could not have successfully transitioned nor continued the program under its administration without the help and support of South Carolina Ducks Unlimited.

The goal of SEWE’s KFC program is to promote wildlife and environmental conservation awareness in our youth in hopes they grow into conservation minded adults. Sponsored by Dominion Energy, Berkeley and Dorchester counties.

Combing the Caw Caw Wilderness Tour

The Caw Caw Interpretative Center, just south of Charleston, contains a variety of South Carolina Lowcountry habitats that are known for their beauty and wildlife. Eagles, turkey, otters, waterfowl and more are often observed from the trails at Caw Caw. There’s no better way to learn about the wilds of the South Carolina Lowcountry.
