Welcome
to SEWE 2022
Welcome to the 40th Southeastern Wildlife Exposition. The uncertainty of the past year has made us more excited than ever to have you here with us. We’re so grateful to those of you who have supported SEWE through the years and delighted to welcome newcomers to the SEWE family.
As you may know, I’ll be handing over the reins to SEWE this summer. The years have flown by, and I look back on everyone of those years with tremendous pride and no small amount of wonder. In 1982, when I was asked to “put together some staff” for a wildlife art-themed event, I could not imagine what lay ahead. Timed to coincide with the area’s typically slower winter tourism season, the show’s effect on the City of Charleston was immediate. Charleston’s historical backdrop, the area’s hallmark Lowcountry cuisine, and hospitality and an increasing roster of top-ranked wildlife artists drew winter-weary crowds to the city. Growing exponentially in the next few years, what some dismissed as “the invasion of the duck people” had all the elements to become a well-respected national, if not international, event. Soon, Southeastern Wildlife Exposition unofficially marked the start of Charleston’s spring tourism season. It is hard to fathom the number of moving parts it takes to produce an event of this size. However, it is easy to imagine how difficult it might be to keep all the pieces in working order. Despite its popularity, SEWE struggled. So, when I was approached in 1987 by SEWE’s then existing board members to assemble a group of investors willing to step up to ensure the event’s future, I fully understood the challenge it presented. It didn’t take long to put together a group of local businessmen who saw that the benefit of saving the event outweighed the risk. When that group asked me to accept the leadership role in the organization, I weighed the decision before agreeing to accept the job of Executive Director for one year only. That one year turned into many, and a career that has been the ride of a lifetime. It is bittersweet to be reminded just how far we’ve come. The road wasn’t always smooth, and recognition for the event’s contribution to the local and statewide economy was hard-won. There were times when we held on for dear life. A hurricane named Hugo reshaped South Carolina. We rode a roller coaster that rocketed us from shock and awe to the ashes of the twin towers, up and over political divides and around the hairpin curves of economic uncertainty. Yet, despite everything thrown at it, SEWE tenaciously came through. Most recently, the global pandemic did its best to stop the momentum, but here we are in February 2022 - back and better than ever.
2
There is no way to adequately express my thanks to all who have contributed to SEWE’s success. Amidst the show’s fast pace, I don’t often get the chance to thank them as I should. First, a tremendous thank you to the artists and exhibitors that place their trust in us each year to provide an audience for their incredible talents. Thank you to the hundreds of you who work as temporary staff each year. From ticket and souvenir sales to original art sales, exhibit managers to runners. Each position is vital to the event - from the packing room to the VIP Suite.
I’m always amused by those who assume that we only work one weekend a year and ask, “What do you do the rest of the year?” I can assure you that the show would not be possible without the efforts of the year-round staff. They’re the ones who keep the wheels perpetually in motion, and I’m so grateful to the talented cast of characters that have come through our doors over 40 years. Although I know all would agree that the SEWE office is always challenging, sometimes frustrating, and occasionally outright crazy, it is never dull. I appreciate each of you who stepped into the fray. Since the beginning, I’ve been privileged to serve a board of directors willing to take the time to understand the organization, provide oversight, and enable its goals. I’d like to especially thank George Bullwinkel, Ronnie Givens, Helen Hill, Len Hutchison, Neil Robinson, and John Walters, whose guidance was invaluable when I converted SEWE to a 501-c-3 organization. The move proved to be a turning point in its history. A special word of thanks to those whose contributions to SEWE remain indelible watermarks across the organization and the event. Each played a critical part in developing and maintaining the standards that established Southeastern Wildlife Exposition as a world-class event. Bart and Leslie Burford, who have been with SEWE since it was established in 1983. Bart and Leslie have been there each year helping in their individual areas of accounting and controls for Bart, and art sales and management for Leslie. Nancyjean Nettles, who came on board with me in 1987, was front and center as we reorganized and set SEWE on a new path. Nancyjean helped establish a new level of professionalism within the show’s administration and set a bar for hospitality that remains the hallmark of the VIP Program. Susan Frampton came to work for SEWE’s retail art gallery in 1989. Named Executive Director in 1999, Susan’s fingerprints can be found across virtually every aspect of the organization. And when John Powell signed on as temporary show staff in 2007, he began a journey that would showcase his leadership abilities, and lead to his appointment as Executive Director in 2011. And, of course, Beth (my wife) who has been there through the good and the bad of ensuring the success of the event and ensuring that the VIP Program has been such a success. Later this year, I will pass to John the torch that will light the future of Southeastern Wildlife Exposition. When he assumes the CEO position, I am confident that his ability, integrity, and determination will ensure that SEWE reaches its very highest potential. Of course, there will be challenges, but I leave him with the knowledge that your support for him will be as unwavering as the support you have given me. I have treasured every moment of my time with Southeastern Wildlife Exposition. Thank you for making it all possible. Thank you all for your time and talents and the enduring friendships, love, loyalty, and memories that have made this the ride of a lifetime. All the best,
James A. Huggins

ulia Rogers grew up on the Chesapeake Bay on the eastern shore of Maryland. She began her career as a wildlife painter at the young age of 17 and has traveled far and wide to feed her passion for the outdoors and its natural beauty. Rogers has worked in several mediums and gradually developed a distinctive style that is seen today in her oil paintings. Rogers believes it is important to try new things and push into different areas and painting en plain air, figurative work, and portraiture are all part of her discipline. She attributes many periods of growth in her paintings to reference trips she has taken and believes seeing animals in their own environment and witnessing their natural behavior has shaped the way she paints. Rogers’ approach to painting is to depict a vision of the feeling she hopes

to portray through color, light and composition. Rogers’ Featured Piece, Golden Light, depicts a trio of swans basking in the warm sunlight with one stretching its angelic wings. Swans are a symbol of purity of spirit, strength and rebirth. “I wanted to express a feeling of weightlessness, light and air,” said Rogers. “My intent for the composition was to show a repeated pattern in the curvature of the necks while stretching and preening, highlighted by the warm sun streaming through the space.” Rogers has been rewarded for her efforts by being exhibited in numerous prestigious venues. She resides and has a studio on the eastern shore of Maryland with her artist husband, Matthew Hillier, and their two dogs.

Dunphy’s broad subjects range from landscapes and seascapes to wildlife and still life art. Her works are enjoyed by collectors around the globe and by art lovers who are able to view them in public collections such as at Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum, which purchased one of her paintings for its permanent collection. Live Presentation
With ties to the likes of Audubon, Catesby and Bachman, South Carolina enjoys a long and important legacy in the study and appreciation of birds. That legacy endures through the Avian Conservation Center and, within it, the Center for Birds of Prey. Ideally situated on a 152-acre campus near Charleston, the Centers are dedicated to the study and welfare of birds and their habitats and to engaging the public in important environmental issues that affect birds and humans alike.

Avian Conservation Center and Center for Birds of Prey The Avian Conservation Center / Center for Birds of Prey was founded in 1991 as the Charleston Raptor Center as a medical treatment facility for injured birds of prey. The name of the organization evolved in 1994 to the South Carolina Center for Birds of Prey, and in 2002 to the umbrella Avian Conservation Center with the Center for Birds of Prey as its principal operating entity, all to more accurately reflect the growing disciplines, reach and influence of the organization. As the nonprofit organization marked its 30th year in 2021, it is primarily focused in four defined areas:
AVIAN HEALTH The professional treatment of injured birds is a source of incomparable insight into critical environmental issues. The Avian Medical Clinic currently treats more than 600 injured raptors and shorebirds each year, releasing the majority back to their natural habitat. Although the causes of injuries vary widely, nearly all are human-related - ranging from gunshot wounds to collisions, electric shock from power lines, and toxicity. The medical functions of the Center operate on a 365-day / 24-hour basis. Injured birds are admitted from a continually widening geographical area.
CONSERVATION EDUCATION The educational programs of the Center are offered within two general formats: on-site and off-site. Each year, thousands of students are engaged in the Center’s science and natural history based educational programs. Decades of experience and evaluations consistently provided from educators demonstrate that these programs capture attention, enhance retention of subject material, and foster a renewed
42
enthusiasm for learning – all of which contribute to an overall improvement in academic performance. The experiential programs offered by the Center also promote an awareness and appreciation for the natural world and our respective roles as stewards in its preservation. The power and beauty of birds of prey cast them as unparalleled ambassadors in public education - exemplifying both the intellectual and ethical aspects of conservation management.
RESEARCH Research and field studies combine with the objectives of the medical and educational programs to support the protection of wild bird populations and their critical habitat areas. The Center has led and participated in groundbreaking scientific research including avian genetics, environmental toxins, and an ongoing study of endangered and threatened species in South Carolina such as the Swallow-tailed kite. The Center’s work is well recognized in connection with environmental threats like the emergence of avian vacuolar myelinopathy (AVM) among eagles and other birds, and mortality resulting from under regulated landfill substances. A “citizen science” approach to a number of initiatives encourages the public to become active contributors to wildlife conservation and raises public awareness of vital ecological issues.
SC OILED BIRDS TREATMENT FACILITY The Avian Conservation Center is designated in the USCG Area Contingency Plan as the official repository for oiled birds in South Carolina and maintains situational readiness in this crucial role. Constructed with a grant from U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, the Center’s combined use Avian Medical Center / Oiled Bird Treatment Facility was completed in October 2007. The facility is designed and equipped to provide the highest quality medical care

available for injured birds of prey and shorebirds on a daily basis, and, as the only permanent avian treatment center of its kind on the Eastern seaboard, affords the most efficient response possible in the event of a contaminant spill affecting native bird populations and their fragile breeding habitats along the South Carolina coast. The Avian Conservation Center/ Center for Birds of Prey has enjoyed long and productive relationships with Federal and State agencies and other relevant organizations since its inception. The Center has worked closely with the SC Department of Natural Resources in numerous areas over the years, including: Support of law enforcement, providing consultation, evidence collection and storage, and forensic services. • Formation of the SC Toxicity Working Group of which SCDNR is a participant, in response to bald eagle deaths in landfills • Providing medical care to 8000+ injured birds of prey and shorebirds • As a training and instructional resource for SCDNR officers • Fielding thousands of public inquiries regarding birds and other wildlife in support of SCDNR and associated public expectations • Osprey nesting platforms and relocations where appropriate • Contaminant spill preparedness and response The Center is staffed by 8 full time and 4 part-time employees with more than 70 years of combined avian experience. The small but effective staff is supported by a league of extensively trained and dedicated volunteer staff members who contribute more than 15,000 hours every year. The current annual operating budget for the organization is $825,000, the majority of which comes from philanthropic sources.
DID YOU KNOW . . . ? Each year, thousands of birds in South Carolina are injured by collisions with automobiles and man-made structures, electrical shock, gunshots, poisoning, nest destruction and other human related causes. The Avian Conservation Center mitigates some of this damage to wildlife by admitting and treating hundreds of birds of prey and shorebirds each year, releasing the majority back to their natural habitat. The center’s professional medical staff, with the support of more than 15,000 volunteer staff hours, treats more than 600 injured birds of prey and shorebirds in its Medical Center each year. Visit the Center for Birds of Prey tent at Marion Square to learn more.

Sheep & Duck Herding BRITTLEBANK PARK
Back by popular demand, Windy Knolls Farm owner and master trainer, Bill Coburn, will showcase the fascinating world of herding instinctive to the Border Collie breed. For over 23 years Bill Coburn has been training and working with Border Collies. When he purchased his first dog he was advised to get a trained dog, but as Bill put it, “I was too hardheaded to do that.” So, with the help of a neighbor he trained his first dog on his own and the rest is history. Bill and his dogs have won many competitions
throughout the years, even one competition in Georgia where he could not communicate by voice commands. All of Mr. Coburn’s dogs spend their days working sheep on Windy Knolls Farm in Laurens, South Carolina. Here’s your chance to see them do what they were born to do in person. Watch his collies artfully muster sheep and ducks through various obstacles with only a whistle and a few commands throughout SEWE weekend.

SEWE SCULPTURE INITIATIVE In May of 2019, the first seeds were planted in the Town of Mount Pleasant for a sculpture exhibit with plans to extend throughout the region. The SEWE sculpture exhibit at Mount Pleasant Waterfront Park was meant to be a cultural experience, as well as the beginning of what will become a trail throughout the Lowcountry. The sculptures of animals indigenous to the region could not have a more appropriate backdrop than the waters and marshes of the Cooper River. Teeming with wildlife, the Cooper’s tidal waters are a reminder of the rich habitat of our region and the importance of conservation and sustainability. Public sculpture is an important part of any community, providing access to art for all, especially youth and the underserved. As has been proven with these six sculptures, it also provides a place for reflection and inspiration. In 2021, the first public sculpture linking Mount Pleasant to Downtown, and creating the first leg of the trail, was unveiled. This newly installed work of permanent public sculpture in the Charleston

HOST AN ARTIST PROGRAM
T
he Southeastern Wildlife Exposition is proud to have launched the Host an Artist Program four years ago. With support from the Cambria Hotel Charleston Riverview and individual donors, SEWE is now able to further support the artists who travel from great distances to be in Charleston each February for the event. Charleston has long supported the arts, and careers have launched born through SEWE over the last 40 years. Collectors and wildlife art enthusiasts gather here every February to see new work by acclaimed artists as well as new talent that is just being discovered. As the popularity of this event and the city has grown, so too have the costs for artists. With contributions from both individuals and businesses, SEWE will offset some of these expenses beginning with lodging. Artists will receive greatly reduced room rates through the generosity of the Cambria Hotel Charleston Riverview and individual contributions. To host an artist, individuals or businesses may donate $150. Donations are accepted throughout the close of the show.

ach year kids from around the country have a chance to show off their artistic talents and learn about conservation with the Junior Duck Stamp Art Contest, a federal contest with a big prize: a commemorated special edition U.S. stamp. The Southeastern Wildlife Exposition has continued its partnership with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources and the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service for the 2019-2022 South Carolina Junior Duck Stamp Contest, sponsored by Ducks Unlimited. The SCDNR had managed the SC Junior Duck Stamp program through 2011, but because of budget cuts the program became at risk of being discontinued and other sources of funding had to be found. To ensure the program’s continuation, SEWE partnered with SCDNR in 2012 to assume the administration and Ducks Unlimited, the world leader in wetlands and waterfowl conservation, came on as the sponsor helping to keep the program available to more than 700,000 students in South Carolina.
and biologically accurate drawings or paintings of eligible North American waterfowl species. Students were encouraged to include a conservation message with their artwork explaining what they learned from the program and to inspire others to participate in conservation. In addition to twelve prize winners, an overall “Best of Show” was selected to represent South Carolina in the National Junior Duck Stamp Contest, where it competed with the winning entrants from all 50 states, the American Samoa and the Virgin Islands to become the 2019-2022 collective Federal Junior Duck Stamp. Sold by the U.S. Postal Service and other vendors, all proceeds from the Stamp sales help support environmental and conservation education efforts. SEWE could not have successfully transitioned nor continued the program under its administration without the help and support of South Carolina Ducks Unlimited.
The Junior Duck Stamp Art Contest is a dynamic educational program using both conservation and design principles to teach wetland habitat and waterfowl biology to children, K-12. The program provides an opportunity for students to artistically express their knowledge of the diversity, interdependence, and beauty of wildlife. In 2019, nearly 200 public, private and home-schooled South Carolina students participated. Competing in four grade groups (K-3, 4-6, 7-9, and 10-12), they created visually compelling

The Henry and Sylvia Yaschik Foundation The Henry and Sylvia Yaschik Foundation, a Charleston, SC-based charitable foundation, was created by the long-time Charleston residents as a means to sustain the secular and Jewish values that the Yaschiks embraced in their lifetimes. Sylvia and Henry Yaschik were grateful for the opportunities afforded them and the Foundation became the vehicle for providing opportunities to others. Their legacy of Since 1948. charity and philanthropy continues in their absence.
