Since my time as a student at Sewickley Academy, I’ve been ceaselessly impressed by the generosity of our donors who do so much to allow the Academy to thrive.”

Dear Sewickley Academy Community,

This is an exciting time to be a part of SA. Always committed to academic excellence, we don’t stop with our students’ academic development. We also focus on the growth of their character – leading by example and celebrating integrity, responsibility, respect, empathy, and kindness. Our alumni, faculty, and staff continuously demonstrate tremendous grace and dedication, never wavering from our student-centered focus and Panther pride. It is an honor to represent my alma mater as Chair of the Board of Trustees.

Since my time as a student at Sewickley Academy, I’ve been ceaselessly impressed by the generosity of our donors who do so much to allow the Academy to thrive. SA is able to grow year after year, expanding programming across academics, athletics, and the arts, as well as bringing in talented faculty for new initiatives who add to our premier group of teachers. We have also increased our scholarship offerings, thereby allowing greater access to new students who have the talent and ability to succeed at SA. Whether through independent gifts, contributions to the Annual Fund, attendance at special events, and so on, our constituents have been helping us to break records in financial growth while contributing to the tight-knit, family feel that makes our community so special. I sincerely thank all of our donors for their support, and I invite you, new and returning donors alike, to join me in sponsoring SA for continued success in 2022-23.

Sincerely,

2021-22 ANNUAL REPORT | Sewickley Academy 5

A NOTE from the HEAD OF SCHOOL

Dear Sewickley Academy Community,

The 2021-22 school year will be remembered as a time of transition and growth at Sewickley Academy. We continued our legacy of academic excellence and made strides in re-imagining and enhancing all that we offer to our students and their families. While change can sometimes be challenging, our team worked hard to uphold our longstanding reputation as a premier independent school and our commitment to high standards.

As this was my first year as Head of School, officially announced in February 2022, I was honored to have the confidence of the Board of Trustees in leading my alma mater. In a short amount of time, we achieved tremendous progress, particularly in fundraising. We exceeded goals and broke records with the Home and School Association’s Clothesline Sale, the Hansen Cup Memorial Golf Tournament, the Annual Auction, and the Day of Giving. The Pennsylvania Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) program reached a record high in the school’s history, thereby greatly impacting our financial aid capacity. Contributions to the Annual Fund for the fiscal year were at a ten-year high. We also secured a quarter million dollar gift dedicated toward our Global Studies program, as well as the school’s largest single gift to date of $20 million. Progress was made in building relationships with our alumni and donors and expanding our admissions outreach. We grew our merit scholarship program and created a For the Future Fund to increase access to Sewickley Academy and benefit students in neighboring Beaver County. We made efforts to improve communication and collaboration with all stakeholders. We restructured our administrative team to include a well-developed balance of backgrounds, experiences, and skill sets, hired a marketing and communications team, and added to our world-class faculty and staff in order to achieve our goals.

The 2021-22 school year will be remembered as a time of transition and growth at Sewickley Academy. We continued our legacy of academic excellence and made strides in re-imagining and enhancing all that we offer to our students and their families.”

It was a year of listening to and incorporating the dreams, hopes, and ideas of our faculty, staff, students, and families. We launched a new art history program and established the groundwork for an innovative Pre-K through Grade 12 Computer Science Department that launched with the start of the 2022-23 academic year. We have expanded STEM offerings for our students and continue to support professional development for all faculty and staff. We even discovered a tremendous learning opportunity for the entire community when we got creative with campus maintenance by bringing in goats to assist with the landscaping of the ravine behind the Early Childhood building.

We saw students embrace both independent and critical thinking this year. They organized, developed, and executed projects and tasks both in and outside of the classrooms. They accepted challenges and enthusiastically pursued opportunities to help others in our community and across the world. After adapting admirably to the constraints of a world-wide pandemic, students were once again able to travel. Groups visited Puerto Rico and Israel in the spring as part of the Global Studies program, and our Grade 5 classes excitedly took their annual three-day overnight camping trip.

6 Educating Tomorrow’s Leaders

Student achievement was remarkable throughout the 2021-22 academic year. Highlights included that one of our Grade 7 students won the Young Playwrights Contest and that three Middle School students won a Shakespeare Monologue and Scene Contest. Eight seniors were named as commended students in the National Merit Scholarship Program and two became finalists. Two more Senior School students qualified for the American Invitational Math Exam, and a junior took Best in Show in a regional high school student ceramics show. For their work on the stage, two students won Thespy Awards and another was nominated for a Gene Kelly award along with the orchestra. The girls tennis team captured the WPIAL Class AA championship.

Our faculty and staff also received recognition for excellence this year. One teacher was named the 2021 PA FIRST LEGO League Mentor of the Year, and another was honored as 2022 PhysTec Local Teacher of the Year. Our Middle School Spanish teacher was recognized as the 19th Clark Faculty Chair, and our Senior School World Languages Department earned a Golden Globe Award from the Pennsylvania State Modern Language Association. The Department of Education, Office of Commonwealth Libraries (OCL) awarded SA a grant for the Video Game Clubs of America. Three faculty participated in a Civil Rights Trip through Classrooms Without Borders, and two earned opportunities to travel out of state for National Endowment for the Humanities seminars. Additionally, three teachers traveled to the Loris Malaguzzi International Centre, Reggio Emilia, Italy to study the key principles of the Reggio approach to early childhood education.

Growth and change continues with the 2022-23 academic year. We improved, and will continue to improve, campus security. We already upgraded both campus cafeterias and have unveiled an all new Admissions suite and Breakthrough Pittsburgh facilities, both critical to welcoming new students and families to

SA. Finishing touches are taking place in the innovative Panthers Performance Center offering enhanced physical fitness and wellness for all students, faculty, and staff. Classrooms in the Oliver Building have undergone renovations for new robotics and computer science facilities. Playground facilities are being improved for our youngest students, and we are developing plans for new athletic fields at Nichols Field.

It is important to note that change does not just apply to the physical aspects of our campus. We are also placing a renewed emphasis on our Community of Respect to ensure that our graduates not only have the academic skills to succeed in college and beyond, but also a sense of character that sets them apart.

While the 2021-22 academic year was not without challenges, I am filled with great satisfaction as I look back at all that our community accomplished. It is simply not possible to show the extent of my gratitude to our families, alumni, and donors who have continuously shared their support and displayed their confidence in Sewickley Academy. I look forward to many more years of earning your trust and working with you as we strengthen and extend the Academy’s reputation and reach.

All the Best,

EDUCATIONAL IMPROVEMENT TAX CREDIT (EITC)

Since 2001, Pennsylvania’s Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) program has allowed businesses and individuals to lower their tax bills by donating to private schools, scholarship organizations, Pre-K programs, and other educational enrichment initiatives. The EITC tax credits were created by the legislature for the purpose of providing tuition assistance in the form of scholarships for eligible students.

The Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) – Special Purpose Entity (SPE) program provides individuals with a 75% tax credit for donations to a nonprofit scholarship or educational improvement organization. The tax credit increases to 90% if the individual commits to making the same donation(s) for two consecutive years. The EITCSPE program is administered by the Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) on a first-come, first-served basis.

At Sewickley Academy, contributions from this program are used for the financial aid program and distributed to families who apply and qualify for need-based assistance.

HOME and SCHOOL ASSOCIATION

The Home and School Association is a 501(c) (3) charitable and educational organization, with a mission to support the students, parents, and faculty of Sewickley Academy by supplementing the educational environment and enhancing the learning experiences of all students who attend Sewickley Academy, and to create a positive image of the school within the community. Home and School membership includes all parents, legal guardians, and other persons standing “in loco parentis” with a child or children enrolled in and attending Sewickley Academy, as well as all members of the faculty, staff, and administration of Sewickley Academy.

In addition to our gifts to the Annual Fund, Marne and I have been giving both personally and through our corporation using the EITC program since 2017. Because it is a 90 percent tax credit towards our state tax bill, we are able to leverage a lot of scholarship funds for SA at a very low net expense to us.”

ACCELERATING PROGRESS ACROSS CAMPUS

Transformative change has begun on Sewickley Academy’s campus as a result of the largest single gift in the 184-year history of the school. In February 2022, SA announced that a $20 million donation had been received and would be dedicated to program and faculty support, scholarships, and facility enhancements. These developments have been made possible by a gift from The Tull Family Foundation. Founded by Sewickley residents Thomas Tull, founder and CEO of Tulco LLC, and his wife, Alba Tull, the Foundation is committed to transforming the lives of people in traditionally underserved and underfunded communities. This investment and the shared vision and values with Sewickley Academy allow the school to accelerate its established strategic goals. Spread across the Academy’s fundamental pillars, this funding opens endless possibilities for students to experience an education unmatched elsewhere and enable them to achieve their fullest potential.

“We could not be more thrilled by the possibilities a donation of this magnitude brings to the Academy,” said Dr. Ashley Birtwell, Head of Sewickley Academy. “This gift means that we can deliver and build upon more than we could have ever anticipated. As we continue to position the Academy for the future and prepare for the next 100 years, it is critical that we put in place now the academic programs and infrastructure necessary to ensure our place in this community for years to come. We have three core areas to invest in to further our

growth: support for our exceptional faculty and staff; access to our school for the region’s most talented students; and upgrades to our spaces to ensure that our faculty, staff, and students can benefit from state-ofthe-art facilities. This generous donation from the Tulls enables us to do just that.”

Sewickley Academy Board of Trustees Chair Kate (Poppenberg ’82) Pigman added, “From dramatically revamping our STEM and computer science curriculum to recruiting the best teachers and building best-in-class facilities, this game-changing moment for the school cements its position as a center for academic excellence in both the region and the country.”

The Sewickley Academy leadership team firmly believes that this impressive contribution should be attributed to the unwavering dedication, commitment, and talent of our faculty and staff, the hard work and commitment of the students, and the relentless support and stellar representation of the alumni.

FACTS and STATS

I enjoy supporting our community. The more support we give, the better resources and materials we have to do our jobs. I feel it is so important because it betters our teaching, keeps us up to date on the best approaches or practices, and keeps us motivated as the curriculum is always changing. Save the Date for the next Auction, Lights, Camera, Auction! on Saturday, April 22, 2023. If you are interested in helping to plan this fabulous event, please email the Advancement Office at advancement@sewickley.org

Sewickley Academy hosted its 35th Annual Auction, A Night at the Drive-In, on Saturday, April 9, 2022. It was certainly a night to remember! More than 180 people attended, and, with their support, more than $300,000 were raised. Net proceeds from the Auction benefit the Sewickley Academy Annual Fund.

In particular, the Fund-a-Need campaigns benefited tremendously as follows:

$46,750 for Breakthrough Pittsburgh, a tuition-free, six-year education program that provides students with access to programs and resources to enrich their knowledge, experiences, and skills. These highly motivated students are often the first in their families to matriculate to and graduate from college.

$28,800 for a new panther statue on campus.

$6,350 to bring the goats back to campus.

During the 2021-22 academic year, the Academy rented goats in an effort to rid the ravine behind the Early Childhood building of Asian Knotweed. Their voracious appetites completed the job a week ahead of schedule. They also provided multiple opportunities for experiential learning for students of all ages, so everyone wished to see them return in 2022-23.

THE ANNUAL FUND

“I give to the Annual Fund because I love my job and I want to show my support for Sewickley Academy. I have personally benefited from many professional development trips that I would never have had the opportunity to go to, working somewhere else. I love being a part of this community, as a teacher and as a former parent, and I want our community to continue to grow and thrive.”

Early Childhood Teacher

Each year, unrestricted gifts to the Sewickley Academy Annual Fund ensure that we are able to meet our commitment to academic excellence and our ability to adapt to the ever-changing needs of our students. We want to thank our generous donors, including alumni, parents, grandparents, faculty, staff, trustees, and friends, for continuing to support our Mission and Core Values. With your support of the Annual Fund, programs are strengthened, and faculty and staff are provided with the tools necessary for students to learn at the highest level both inside and outside of the classroom. Contributing to the Annual Fund makes a difference in the lives of every student, every year. Funds raised ensure that students have the opportunity to become their best selves through an exceptional education. Thank you again to all who supported the Sewickley Academy Annual Fund in 2021-2022.

Q&A with Advancement

Brittani Spencer, Major Gifts Officer and Carey Byrnes, Annual Giving Officer

When did you start working at SA?

B: July 2020

C: May 2022

Provide a brief description of your role/responsibilities:

We are responsible for generating annual and endowed philanthropic revenue for the Academy. Together we build and maintain relationships among all of our constituent groups and enhance loyalty, dedication, and support for the school. We are actively involved in the planning and execution of events like the annual auction and golf outing, days of giving, as well as coordinating sponsorships, planned gifts, memorials, scholarships, and special and transformational giving.

What is your experience prior to SA?

B: I was the Development Director at St. Bernard Academy in Nashville, Tennessee, where I led advancement and alumni efforts. Before moving to Nashville, I spent 4.5 years at the University of Pittsburgh working in development for the School of Medicine. I started working in the field in 2012 with the Hemophilia Foundation as their Fundraising and Events Manager.

C: I was also with the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine as a Senior Development Associate where I worked on event sponsorships as well as class, individual, student, and planned giving. Prior to that, I spent 13 years in various roles with the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium including marketing, development, and visitor services.

What made you want to work in Advancement?

B: I knew I had a passion for this work after taking an Intro to Nonprofit Management course in college. This course enabled us to work closely with an organization to develop a strategic fundraising plan. Working in advancement is challenging yet rewarding, knowing all of your efforts have a direct and immediate impact on the organization.

C: I enjoy building relationships and hearing about other people’s experiences and the impact that their school and its faculty and staff have had on their lives.

What has been your favorite fundraiser to date and why?

B: The 2022 Auction, A Night at the Drive-In, was my favorite fundraiser to plan and execute. Our planning committee went above and beyond to make sure that the event was a success. The energy in the room the night of the event was immeasurable. I am hopeful that the 2023 Auction will be even more successful!

C: On a personal side, my husband and I organized a pancake breakfast for his nephew who was battling childhood leukemia. The outpouring of support, donations, and volunteers, and being able to see our community come together, was so emotionally rewarding. I’m happy to share that he is in remission. Professionally, the UPMC Celebrity Golf Classic was probably my favorite, especially working with the Ryan Shazier Fund for Spinal Rehabilitation.

Why should someone donate to SA?

At SA, we are working to build a culture of philanthropy. Our financial goals matter, of course, but what matters the most is having involvement from our entire community. We aspire to achieve 100% community participation to support our amazing students and inspiring faculty members.

What do you want our donors to know?

Dollars donated to SA, specifically through the Annual Fund (rebranded in 2022-23 as the SA Fund), directly impact the student experience. They are used for improvements to campus, to provide professional development opportunities and support for our faculty members, and so much more. This fund fills the gap between tuition and the actual cost of a Sewickley Academy education, thereby offsetting significant tuition increases and benefiting every student.

What makes SA donors special?

Both of us have worked for much larger organizations, and, in comparison, the community of donors and prospective donors at SA, while smaller, is more tight-knit and engaged. SA donors have a special commitment to the school’s legacy and to academic excellence.
