November 2010 FLSA: Exempt Class Code: 03509 JUNIOR LAWYER DEFINITION Under general direction, plans, organizes, coordinates, and performs a wide variety of difficult and complex professional, technical, and confidential work required to‌‌. SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED Receives general supervision from the General Counsel. The Junior Lawyer may exercised indirect supervision over clerical staff. CLASS CHARACTERISTICS This is the entry-level classification in the Lawyer series that coordinates and administers one or more human resources programs and activities related to employee and labor relations, recruitment and selection, job analysis and classification, compensation, and employee training and development. Responsibilities include performing diverse, specialized, and complex work involving significant accountability and decision-making responsibility. The incumbent organizes and oversees day-to-day activities and is responsible for providing professional-level support to the Human Resources Manager in a variety of areas. Successful performance of the work requires an extensive professional background as well as ability to coordinate departmental work with that of other departments and outside agencies. Serves as team leader or assistant team leader, directs and participates in classification studies of individual positions. Positions at this level are required to act with a great deal of autonomy in making decisions. This class is distinguished from the Human Resources Manager in that the latter is responsible for the management of all human resources programs in the department. Advises clients concerning unlawful detainer actions, business transactions, advisability of prosecuting or defending lawsuits, or legal rights and obligations. Interpret laws, rulings and regulations for individuals and businesses. Analyze the probable outcomes of cases, using knowledge of legal precedents. Presents and summarize cases to judges and juries. Evaluates findings and develop strategies and arguments in preparation for presentation of cases. Gathers evidence to formulate defense or to initiate legal actions, by such means as interviewing clients and witnesses to ascertain the facts of a case. Represents clients in court or before government agencies. Examines legal data to determine advisability of defending or prosecuting lawsuit. Selects jurors, argue motions, meet with judges and question witnesses during the course of a trial. Presents evidence to defend clients or prosecute defendants in criminal or civil lititgation.
