OVER 55 SFPGA PROFESSIONALS, JUNIOR GOLFERS, AND STAFF SERVE THE COMMUNITY

Since June 7th over 55 South Florida PGA Professionals, Junior Tour Members, Club Med Golf Academy students and South Florida PGA staff members have volunteered their time helping to make dreams come true through Habitat for Humanity of Palm Beach County’s Kennedy Estates II project in Jupiter. In April the South Florida PGA Foundation broke ground on a home for Sateria William’s and her three daughters, committing not only monetary support to this project but also physical support through volunteer hours. This project has afforded South Florida PGA Professionals with an opportunity to give back to their community and come together as a team for a great cause. Over the past two months PGA Professionals have learned various skills in carpentry, in addition to utilizing tricks of the trade from previous careers! “It has been great to witness the dedication and passion of South Florida PGA Professionals as they have worked diligently to complete this project, knowing that each and every one of them has enjoyed every moment of each work day,” stated South Florida PGA Executive Director, Geoff Lofstead. August 7th and August 15th will be the next days when South Florida PGA Professionals can be onsite in Jupiter, framing out the inside of the home and helping to complete the construction of this home. FOUNDATION PRO-AM RETURNS FROM IRISH EXCURSION Last week 17 South Florida PGA Professionals and 51 amateurs traveled to Northern Ireland to play in the 2013 South Florida PGA Travel Pro-Am. What a great week everyone had! Upon arriving in Northern Ireland the group set out to play 5 rounds of golf at some of the best golf courses in the world. Facilities played included Portstewart, Royal Portrush, Castlerock Golf Club, Ardglass Golf Club, and Royal County Down. The 5 rounds were split into two challenges. The first challenge was held during round 1 and 2 at Portstewart and Royal Portrush. Team Champions for the first challenge were SFPGA Life Member Don Renaud and his team comRichard Terga’s Winning Team of Brent Sembler, prised of John LeReux, Yves LeReux, and Tom Kane. Low Professional for the first challenge Mickey Fernandez, and Michael Baumann was PGA Head Golf Professional at Old Marsh Golf Club, Tom Dyer. The final challenge was contested during the last three rounds, and PGA Professional Richard Terga’s team was victorious. Richard claimed the low professional title as well. Terga’s team was comprised of amateurs Brent Sembler, Mickey Fernandez, and Michael Baumann. In addition to the various challenges SFPGA Professional Steve Farrell had a hole-in-one during round 2 at Royal Portrush! Congrats to Steve and thank you to all those who made the trip! EVERYONE IS EXCITED ABOUT TEAM GOLF, EVEN RICKY FOWLER

In our first season, Team Golf has 18 teams participating, with 187 junior golfers! Word is spreading about the program, and everyone wants to participate, even Rickie Fowler! Rickie Fowler recently visited the Jonathan’s Landing Shipwreckers’ practice, to visit with the players and hit some shots. Over the course of the season, players from all teams have shown improvement with the two-person scramble format, and from the exposure to playing opportunities. At the beginning of the season, a lot of the players had never played a full nine holes, let alone in a tournament setting. This format has provided a perfect way to educate the juniors about rules, etiquette, and their own abilities. With only a few events left in the season, Teams will be gearing up for the Team Golf Championship to be held on August 17th, at Indian Spring Country Club. All 18 teams have been invited for an experience to celebrate the season. We look forward to having 108 juniors out representing their teams, meeting juniors from all over the section. Juniors and parents have been raving about the program, as well as PGA Professionals. Business has increased with the program, and Professionals are seeing more engagement from families, including individual lessons, rounds played, and merchandise purchased. STACK & TILT VISIT THE SFPGA

On July 19th over 30 SFPGA Professionals had the unique opportunity of attending a Stack and Tilt seminar featuring Andy Plummer and Mike Bennett. Michael Bennett and Andy Plummer were recently named as a Top 100 Instructor for Golf Magazine in America, and began learning about golf swing theory out of necessity. They were professional golfers who wanted to become outstanding players themselves, yet found it difficult to improve consistently. Subsequently they sought out many of the game’s best instructors, and at times their advice was just what they needed to improve. This process resulted in a system of understanding and organizing the game of golf that would later be referred to as the Stack & Tilt® system. The goal of the system is to present golf as a progressive set of workable challenges to the beginning players while also being broad enough to differentiate the smallest variations on the champion player. From the Stack & Tilt seminar, SFPGA Professionals learned the science behind their theories, hopefully taking away helpful tips to share with their own clientele. JUPITER COUNTRY CLUB PARTICIPATES IN THE INAUGRAL PATRIOT CUP

This past Monday, Jupiter Country Club participated in the Inaugural Patriot Cup event at Tiburon Golf Club. This event benefitted the Folds of Honor Foundation and was comprised of clubs from South Florida that raised the most money for Patriot Golf Day last year. Jupiter Country Club had 2 teams in attendance. The team consisting of Barrett White, Harrison Hine, Jim Pawlik and Peter Rene finished in 2nd place which was 1 shot away from victory. Fortunately, the first place team was the other team from Jupiter Country Club consisting of Jon Arthur, Dennis Gaito, John Boggess and Bernie Gleason. The Folds of Honor Foundation mission is as follows: “The Folds of Honor Foundation is rallying a nation to ensure no family is left behind in the fight to preserve American freedom. Through scholarships and other assistance, we give back to the spouses and children of soldiers killed or disabled in service to our country. We provide healing, hope and an opportunity for dreams to be realized... with the support of people like you. We feel this is our duty as citizens of the greatest country in the world.”

SMILING FORE LIFE REACHES HUNDREDS OF JUNIORS! Now at five locations, Smiling Fore Life is experiencing it’s most impactful year.

So far in 2013, the program has reached over 370 juniors. This program would not be possible without the support of the hospitals, the Florida Junior Golf Council’s grant program, our Foundation donors, as well as our professionals who teach the program: Sebastian Camillo, Dave Cunliffe, Mark Hamstra, Daryl Hollinshead, Mike Jonges, Gayle Leslie, Valerie Moore, Dave Pesacov, and Andy Scott. Your support has made this year a record breaking year, and we can’t thank you enough!

FLORIDA FAMILY GOLF DAY

John Prince Learning Center is one facility who found success with Florida Family Golf Day. After two weeks of various promotions, including 40 minutes of radio adds, 47 individuals had registered for their free family clinic! While not everyone attended due to threatening weather, the facility has added to their customer base with those who will return as a family, as well as individually. TOPICS NEWSLETTER SFPGA FOUNDATION NEWS 2013 SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS DAMON KULL RECEIVES THE 2013 SFPGA PROFESSIONAL GOLF MANAGEMENT UNIVERSITY SCHOLARSHIP AT FGCU

The South Florida PGA is proud to announce that Damon Kull of Old Forge, NY, is the recipient of the 2013 South Florida PGA Professional Golf Management University Scholarship at Florida Gulf Coast University. This scholarship is a $2,500 grant annually awarded to one student enrolled in the PGA Professional Golf Management University Program at Florida Gulf Coast University and meeting all eligibility requirements. Damon is entering his Junior year at Florida Gulf Coast, and has been named to the Dean’s list for three of his four semesters with a 3.82 cumulative GPA. Not only is Kull an outstanding student, but has been highly praised by Professionals at all three internships he has completed. Scott Kirkwood, Director of Golf at the Ocean Reef Club, had this to say about Damon: “Damon would exhibit an ability to strive for excellence by using every resource available to him, to enhance the guests and or membership golf experience at the club. He was quick to offer a hand when needed and would problem solve situations that arose in an immediate and appropriate fashion.” Damon’s career goals include becoming a PGA Head Professional or Director of Golf. He would like to oversee the golf operation at a facility to ensure the facility survives, exceeds the members’ expectations, and grows the game of golf, and mentors young golf professionals. Sean Dadey, Head Professional at Drumlins Country Club, has this to say about Damon’s time interning with him; “he was always trying to better himself as well as better the facility. Damon would arrive early and often stay late working with the staff on the busy tournament program or helping our Junior members with their games. No job was too big or too small for Damon. He always wanted to learn and to get better.” We wish Damon the best of luck with the rest of the program, as well as his future career in the golf industry.

ABOUT THE SFPGA PROFESSIONAL GOLF MANAGEMENT UNIVERSITY SCHOLARSHIP AT FGCU

This is the third year that the South Florida PGA has awarded the PGA Professional Golf Management University Scholarship at Florida Gulf Coast University. This award was created to financial assistance to aspiring young men and women in the PGA Professional Golf Management University Program. This scholarship is open to all Florida Gulf Coast University students currently enrolled in or entering into his/her junior or senior year of studies in the program. Students must also have completed Level 1 of the program and have a cumulative GPA of 3.0.

HENRY CHATEAUVERT OF NORTH PALM BEACH RECEIVES 2013 SFPGA DON E. BEATTIE SCHOLARSHIP

The South Florida PGA Foundation is delighted to announce that Palm Beach County resident, Henry Chateauvert has been selected to receive the 2013 Don E. Beattie Scholarship. This scholarship grant of $2,500 is annually awarded to one Palm Beach County resident meeting all eligibility requirements. The Don E. Beattie Scholarship was established in 2006 in memory of PGA Professional Don E. Beattie for his service to the South Florida PGA Section as a Past President and for his support of the game of golf. Don E. Beattie was a selfless, giving, unassuming individual dedicated to community outreach efforts and countless charities throughout Palm Beach County. Henry Chateauvert is the son of Tanya and PGA Professional, Tony Chateauvert, a PGA member and the Head Professional at the Town of Palm Beach Par 3 course. After graduating with top honors from Alexander W. Dreyfoos School of the Arts, Henry had a successful freshman year at Rollins College. After only one year, Henry has achieved great success, including a 3.69 GPA while majoring in Music.

TOPICS NEWSLETTER SFPGA FOUNDATION NEWS 2013 SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS Chateauvert has not only continued his academic achievements, but has joined the Rollins College swim team, and performs with the Jazz Ensemble, Rollins Orchestra, as well as performing professionally in jazz clubs around Orlando. In his freshmen year, Henry received two prestigious musical awards including Outstanding Jazz Musician and the Music Faculty Citation Award. These bring him that much closer to his goal of playing in the Boston Symphony. The South Florida PGA congratulates Henry and wishes him well as he continues his studies at Rollins College.

ABOUT THE DON E. BEATTIE SCHOLARSHIP

The Don E Beattie Schoalrship is available to high school seniors or college students enrolled in the freshmen or sophomore classes of undergraduate studies who are currently employed in the golf industry, or whose parents or grandparents are employed in or retired from the golf industry (PGA professionals, superintendents, sales representatives, club employees, or club managers, etc.). Applicants must be permanent residents of Palm Beach County, Florida. Applicants must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 (based on a 4.0 scale). Application must include a letter of recommendation from a PGA professional or club manager. A students may be awarded any SFPGA Charitable Foundation based scholarship a single time during each fiscal year.

ROBERT BUTLER OF ESTERO NAMED 2013 BOBBY GOODMAN SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT

The South Florida PGA proudly announces the 2013 Bobby Goodman Scholarship recipient: Robert Butler. The Bobby Goodman Scholarship is a $2,500 grant annually given to a high school senior or college student entering into his/her freshman or sophomore year of undergraduate studies whose parents or grandparents either work in or are retired from the golf industry. This scholarship is named after PGA Professional Bobby Goodman, a man well known to the South Florida PGA record books. Bobby is recognized for his numerous contributions to the game of golf at all levels. The Bobby Goodman Scholarship Fund was created in 1988 by the South Florida PGA Senior Committee in tribute to the late Bobby Goodman. Robert is the son of Ruby and Jim Butler, PGA member and General Manager of Grey Oaks Country Club in Naples. A graduate of Bishop Verot High School, Robert maintained a 3.94 GPA, while participating in numerous extracurricular activities, including: varsity golf, varsity track, National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, Key Club, and Chess Club. After already completing a month long leadership program, Robert will begin his freshman year at Notre Dame in a few weeks, where he intends to study Business or Finance, on a path towards an engineering degree with an ultimate goal of designing high performance fuel efficient vehicles. Maria Barbato, Director of Guidance for Bishop Verot, explained that Robert has gone above and beyond the school requirements, and has completed over 150 hours of community service with organizations like The First Tee. Not only is Robert dedicated to academics and community service, but to golf and growing the game as well. Robert has been an active member of the South Florida PGA Junior Tour for years, and proudly represented the section at the 2012 Ryder Cup Junior Academy. Robert has a bright future ahead of him, and we know he will accomplish his goals as he starts his journey at Notre Dame.

ABOUT THE BOBBY GOODMAN SCHOLARSHIP

JOHN WEBSTER GOLF ACADEMY HIGHLIGHTS ANNUAL KIDS FITNESS FESTIVAL The Palm Beach County Sports Commission teamed up with the Ronald McDonald House Charities® (RMHC) of South Florida once again to present the 2013 Kids’ Fitness Festival of the Palm Beaches. One of South Florida’s favorite children’s events, the Kids’ Fitness Festival was held July 17th and 18th at the Palm Beach County Convention Center. Last year’s event drew over 5,000 Kids aged 5 to 13, all with an interest in sports.

The Kids’ Fitness Festival gave children the opportunity to learn and participate in over 40 different traditional and non-traditional sports. Some of the featured sports included: baseball, basketball, fencing, football, golf, lacrosse, martial arts, netball, tennis, soccer and more. John Webster’s Golf Academy was on hand to partner with the South Florida PGA in delivering golf lessons to the juniors at the festival. Kids were immediately attracted to Golfzilla and there was often a long line of kids waiting to swing clubs. One of the more popular booths, golf saw many students coming back multiple times throughout the day. One junior who came back seven times, said “I love golf, I can’t get enough!” A big thank you to John Webster and his Academy staff for helping to instruct the thousands of kids who came to get golf lessons!

THANKS TO FOXFIRE COUNTRY CLUB AND ALL SFPGA FACILITIES WHO ANNUALLY SUPPORT THE FOUNDATION Annually the South Florida PGA Foundation receives various donations from PGA Professionals, Members of PGA Professionals, friends of the Section and most importantly facilities. For the past two years the Foxfire Community Association in Naples, with the support of General Manager, Donald Shea, PGA, has donated $5,500 generously to the South Florida PGA Foundation. These funds help support programs including but not limited to the South Florida PGA Junior Tour, charitable gifting, Habitat for Humanity, Smiling Fore Life, and scholarships. We thank them for this wonderful gift and for the opportunity to use this donation to better our programs, improve operations, and expand our impact in our South Florida Community.

TUCKER & LINDAHL CLAIM THE 2013 PRO SCRATCH PRESENTED BY NIKE GOLF Jerry Tucker of Stuart made six birdies on his own ball Monday, July 1 as he teamed with Matt Lindahl to win the 34th annual South Florida PGA Pro Scratch presented by Nike Golf and supported by AMJ Campbell and Bushnell amateur tournament at Old Marsh Golf Club.

They won with an eight under par 64 as Lindahl added three birdies. Both birdied the par-4 11th hole. Tucker’s other birdies were at Nos. 2, 3, 6, 7 and 10. Lindahl also birdied the eighth and 12th holes. They did not make a bogey. It was Tucker’s second victory in the section’s Pro Scratch. He teamed with Robbie Dew for the title in 2007 at the TPC at Eagle Trace in Coral Springs. Two pairings in the 82-team starting field tied for second, a stroke back at 65: Matthew Newman of Broken Sound Club, Boca Raton, with Pete Byman, and Bill Davis, Jupiter Hills Club, Tequesta, with Kevin Jorden.

FIEGER & DOBBS, 2013 PRO PRO CHAMPIONS Frank Dobbs of Jensen Beach and Gene Fieger of Naples, both former assistants at clubs in the Philadelphia area, teamed up to win 32nd annual South Florida PGA Pro-Pro Championship presented by TaylorMade adidas Ashworth and Yamaha on July 9-10 at the Ocean Reef Club. Both now head professionals in South Florida — Dobbs, of Eagle Marsh, and Fieger, of Hideout — they combined for a 10 under par 61, four-ball stroke play, on the Hammock course and a 36-hole total of 124. They shot 63 in the first round at nearby Card Sound Golf Club and trailed by three strokes. Tommy Dee (Yamaha), Frank Dobbs, Gene Fieger, PGA, Bill Bishop and Jimmy Bishop (TaylorMade adidas Ashworth)

It was Dobbs’ third victory in the South Florida PGA Pro-Pro. He teamed with Chris Czaja of Boca Raton to win in 1996 at Emerald Hills in Hollywood and in 2001 at Fiddlesticks in Fort Myers. Overall, each now has nine SFPGA victories. DENNIS MEYER & JIM JEWELL CLAIM 2013 SENIOR SUPER SENIOR

32 South Florida PGA Professionals comprising of 16 teams competed on July 12 at Turtle Creek Club in the 6th Annual Senior-Super Senior Event. Taking home first place honors was the team of Dennis Meyer and Jim Jewell of Naples. They carded a total of 13 birdies in route to a 13 under par score of 59 and a winner’s check of $800. Finishing just one stroke back with an impressive 12 under par 60 was the team of Gary Baker and Wes Smith. The Senior-Super Senior Event is an 18 hole competition in which 9 holes were played in a scramble format and the other 9 holes were played in a four-ball stroke play format. Teams were comprised of two South Florida PGA Professionals, one between the ages of 50-64 and other 65 or older. The event was supported by the PGA Tour.

SMITH & LOVAN CLAIM OVERALL CHAMPIONSHIP TITLES AT EASTPOINTE CC

The South Florida PGA Junior Tour presented by the Honda Classic hosted its sixth Junior Championship Tour event of the 2013 season on July 2-3 at Eastpointe Country Club in Palm Beach Gardens. A competitive field of 58 juniors from all over South Florida competed on the beautiful and challenging Country Club at Eastpointe. Windy and humid conditions presented a challenge to the field of talented juniors. Zach Smith, hometown hero from Palm Beach Gardens, claimed the boys overall title by carding a two-day 145. Smith was the round one leader after firing a 71, the only round under par for the day. His 74 in the final round, amidst difficult conditions, was enough to seal his first overall victory. In the Boys 16-18 division, Seonghyun Cho of Lakeworth claimed the division title by shootShyanne Lovan, Jon Davis, PGA and Zach Smith ing a two-day 148 and edging out fellow-competitor Jonah Wasserstrom of Hollywood in a scorecard playoff. Wasserstrom was awarded the second place divisional title. Ryan Lynch of Boynton Beach secured the third place title carding a two-day 150. Andrew Kozan, a Palm Beach Gardens native, secured the Boys 13-15 Division title by shooting a two-day, three-over-par 147. Kozan secured his divisional title by three-strokes over Jupiter resident, Jake Holt. Holt fired a two-day 150 and edged out third place finisher Hamilton Long of West Palm Beach by one stroke. Shyanne Lovan of Wellington polished off her overall trophy after posting a 153 over the two-day event. Lovan cleared the field by five-strokes to secure her Overall Championship title. In the Girls 16-18 Division, Bettina Almeida of Jenson Beach secured first place honors by shooting a two-day 160. Lea Himpens secured second place honors in her 2013 SFPGA Championship Tour debut. Himpens shot a two-day 163, securing the position over third place finisher Morgan Gardner of Parkland. Gardner finished with a two-day 166 for the event. In the Girls 13-15 Division, Samantha Haubenstock of Weston took home the first place trophy after carding a two-day 158. Story Shaw of West Palm Beach secured second place with a two-day 170 and Lily Rinker of Jupiter earned third place with a two-day 191. CAHILL & KRAYESKI CLAIM OVERALL CHAMPIONSHIP TITLES AT OCEAN REEF CLUB IN KEY LARGO

The South Florida PGA Junior Tour presented by the Honda Classic hosted its seventh Junior Championship Tour event of the 2013 season at Ocean Reef Club in Key Largo. A competitive field of 45 juniors from all over South Florida competed on the challenging Hammock Course as tropical story Chantal luckily dissipated and allowed two rounds of beautiful weather in which Championship Tour players were fortunate to compete. Tim Cahill of Royal Palm Beach, swept the Overall Championship for the second straight year at the Ocean Reef Club. His impressive second round performance of two-under-par, 69, was enough to shoot him to the top of the leaderboard with a two-day total of 143. In the Boys 16-18 division, Ryan Torres of Parkland also came out hot in round two firing a, four-under-par, 67, to clinch the Division Title. Torres edged out first round leader, Pedro Tim Cahill, Toby Hearn, PGA, and Kaely Krayeski Gomez of Miami by two-strokes. Gomez fired a two-day 148 and secured second place in a scorecard playoff over Brandon Meyer of Lehigh Acres who also carded a two-day 148 on the Hammock Course this week. In the Boys 13-15 Division, Julio Betancourt of Miami sealed a victory in a tight race and his 2013 debut appearance on the SFPGA Junior Championship Tour. Julio fired a two-day 147, enough to edge out fellow-competitor Eduardo Blochtein of Delray Beach by one stroke. James Petrokus of Royal Palm Beach secured third place honors one stroke behind Blochtein, with a two-day 149. Kaely Krayeski of Wellington clinched her first Overall Championship Title of the season after firing a two-day 151. Krayeski lead the field after round one by carding an impressive one-under-par 70 and continued her great play to bring home an Overall victory. In the Girls 16-18 Division, Mary Janiga of Wellington secured her Division title by two-strokes over Tracy Peyton of Boynton Beach. Janiga and Peyton shot a two-day 160 and 162 respectively. One stroke behind Peyton was Francesca De La Torre of Miami who earned third place honors by edging out fellow-competitor, Caitlin Huiting of Pompano Beach, in a scorecard playoff at 163. In the Girls 13-15 Division, Jenna Tuccio of Marco Island, claimed the Division title by firing a two-day 159, the second best round carded for the event in the Girls Overall Division. POTTER, GARCIA WEATHER STORM AND EXTENDED PLAY TO CLAIM OVERALL CHALLENGE TOUR TITLES AT FORT LAUDERDALE CC

The South Florida PGA Junior Tour presented by the Honda Classic hosted its seventh Junior Challenge Tour event of the 2013 season July 17-18 at Fort Lauderdale Country Club. The first round of the event was postponed to Day 2 as Mother Nature unleashed a deluge of precipitation. A field of 84 juniors from across South Florida attempted to play two-rounds, 36 holes on Thursday, July 18th. Play was halted mid-way through round 2 and the competition was completed as an 18-hole event. While it was a long day for all the juniors, The Boys Overall winner wouldn’t even be determined until a sudden-death playoff on Friday morning. Andrew Potter, of Naples, birdied the opening hole to claim the victory. Potter stiffed his approach from the fairBoys 14-15 Division Champion, Garrett Barber, way bunker to two-feet and sank the putt. Fellow competitor, and Garret Barber, had Mark VanDyck, PGA, and Overall Champion, Andrew Potter an excellent approach and an attempt at a birdie putt to match. Both players shot an even par 72 in regulation. This was Potter’s first tournament with the South Florida PGA Junior Tour in 2013 and Barber’s first attempt at playing up in age division to compete for the Overall title. Both players carded an even-par 72 during regulation play. For Barber’s efforts, he claimed the Boys 14-15 divisional title in his first attempt. Justin Friedman of Boca Raton earned second place honors in the division with a 4-over, 76. Callum Brown of Palm City rounded out the top three by firing a 78. In the Boys 16-18 division, the top 3 spots were determined by scorecard playoff as Blake Yodlowski of Wellington, Hayden Bottini of Boca Raton and Shannon Boner of West Palm Beach all recorded four-over par 76’s. First through third place honors were awarded respectively. With the wet conditions, the Boys 12-13 division proved fiercely competitive as an even par 72 was required even to place in the top-3. Justin Shiao, of Coral Springs, set a blistering pace during his first round, going out in 37 and coming in with 32 to card a total 3-under par 69. It was Shiao’s personal low and earned him top honors for his performance. Michael Checo, of Boca Raton, took home second with a 1-under 71. Anthony Muttillo, also of Boca, earned third with a 72. In the Girls Overall competition, Georgette Garcia of Davie took home first place with her first round 83. It was Garcia’s first Overall victory on the South Florida PGA Junior Tour in 2013. She bested her nearest competitor by three strokes. In the Girls 16-18 division, it was a battle of attrition, as Tracy Peyton took home first place shooting an 86. Peyton of Boynton Beach bested second place finisher Megan Turnquest by one, and third place finisher Lauren Carver of Weston by four. The Girls 14-15 division was won by Jacqueline Fenton of Boca Raton, who recorded an 87. Second and third place was decided by a scorecard playoff between Katelyn Wigderson and Courtney Cross. Cross, of Boca Raton, earned second while Wigderson, of Delray, took home third. In the relatively large, 13-player field of Girls 12-13, top honors were earned by Dana Williams of Boca Raton. Williams, who shot 76, claimed her third divisional title in a row following back-to-back performances on the South Florida Junior Tour and at the South Florida Jr. PGA Championship. Sabrina Fonda, of Wellington earned second place with a 79, and Jillian Bourdage of Tamarac earned third with 83. The Jim McLean Golf School at Doral generously offers a Scholarship annually to two talented South Florida PGA Junior Tour Members who wish to better their game through attendance at a 5-day Jim McLean Golf School Junior Elite Camp. This year, Tracy Peyton, a 17-year-old High School Junior out of Boynton Beach, and Dillon Reno, an 18-year-old High School Senior out of Palm Beach Gardens were the lucky recipients of this wonderful opportunity. Tracy attended the camp over July 21-27 and Dilon attended the July 28-Aug 3 camp. Huge thanks to Jim McLean and his entire staff for making this opportunity possible to these two deserving young individuals who would not otherwise have the opportunity to take advantage of this incredible experience.

OPTIONS, OPTIONS, OPTIONS... A few months back I was working a junior event, when I watched a player, whose ball had rolled down into a lateral water hazard; try to play the ball from within the hazard. As I watched him prepare to hit his shot, I watched for all the obvious rules violations like touching the ground in the hazard with his hand or club or touching or removing any loose impediments in the hazard while his ball was in the hazard (Rule 13-4). He didn’t breach any Rules and in making his stroke made really good contact with his ball. In fact, he hit the ball too good and his shot sailed past the green and into some palmetto bushes. As he was assessing the location of the ball and how to play his next stroke from within the palmettos he looked up, saw me, and motioned me over for assistance. When I arrived, I asked how I could help. He said he wanted to know his options given that his ball was in the middle of the palmetto bush. I thought to myself, wow, this is going to take some time. All kidding aside, there are quite a few options, in fact there are seven in which a player may take relief for a ball coming to rest in an unplayable lie after a stroke from within a water or lateral water hazard. Below are the options explained along with a diagram. Option A – Under penalty of one stroke, proceed under the stroke and distance provision of Rule 27-1 by playing a ball as nearly as possible at the spot from which the original ball was last played (from within the hazard) - Rule 28a. The player would be playing his forth shot.

Under Rule 26-2b Option (B)

Option B – Under penalty of one stroke, drop a ball behind the point where the ball lay, keeping that point directly between the hole and the spot on which the ball is dropped, with no limit to how far behind that point the ball may be dropped – Rule 28b. The player would be playing his forth shot.

Option (C)

Option C – Under penalty of one stroke, drop a ball within two club-lengths of the spot where the ball lay, but not nearer the hole – Rules 28c. The player would be playing his forth shot.

Option D, E & F – Proceed under Rule 26-1b, or if applicable 26-1c, adding an additional penalty of one stroke (two strokes in all) prescribed by the Rule and using as the reference point the point where the original ball last crossed the margin of the hazard before it came to rest in the hazard – Rule 26-1bii. The player would be playing his fifth shot in all three options. Option G – Under an additional penalty of one stroke (two strokes in all), play a ball as nearly as possible at the spot from which the last stroke from outside (in this case, the teeing ground) the water hazard was made – Rule 26-2biii. The player would be playing his fifth shot.

While it would seem that options D, E, F and G may be undesirable to the player given that he would be playing his fifth stroke, those may be his best options depending on where options B and C require him to drop and the fact that trying to replay from within the hazard would be unfavorable. After doing my best to explain the seven different options, I thought for sure the player would ask me to repeat them. He just needed clarification on a couple, mainly the number of penalty stroke incurred. Overall, I was pretty impressed that he seemed to grasp all the options given that I threw a lot of information at him in short amount of time.
