SFPGA AND DON LAW GOLF ACADEMY BRING GOLF AND FITNESS TO OVER 5,000 PALM BEACH COUNTY YOUTHS

On July 11th and 12th, over 5,000 youths in the Palm Beach County area came to learn what it means to stay fit this summer. The Palm Beach County Sports Commission hosted the 2012 Kid’s Fitness Festival at the Palm Beach County Convention Center where over 40 different sports and professional organizations brought activities and professionals from their respective sport in order to introduce these young kids to the many great ways to stay fit and active this summer. The South Florida PGA along with the Don Law Golf Academy had the wonderful opportunity to spend time teaching the thousands of young participants about the great sport of golf. PGA certified professionals were able to introduce eager kids to both the full swing and the putting stroke. Diana Law, Dave Cunliffe, PGA and Mack McConaha, PGA all donated their valuable time and talents over these two days to teaching youngsters the basics of golf fundamentals and how fun it can be to stay active through golf. A short demonstration and instruction of basic swing techniques and safety kicked off the short clinic before the kids got the opportunity to hit golf balls at an inflatable dinosaur, “Golfzilla”, as well as use their skills in a putting challenge.
The two days were packed with fun, excitement, and tremendous energy as the festival participants got to experience and develop skills in golf and other activities including Tae Kwon Do, Squash, Surfing, Judo, Hockey, Fencing, Cricket, Dance, and many more. Each sport was able to put on a short clinic for the participants to introduce them to a new way of getting involved in a variety of sports and activities. All proceeds from the event went to the Palm Beach County Sports Commission, a nonprofit organization which provides local youths the opportunity to learn sportsmanship, teamwork and citizenship through sport. The Sports Commission also promotes character development through sporting activities, lifelong physical fitness, a drug-free lifestyle, and safe and fun access to healthy activities.

THREE SFPGA PROS COMPETE AT THE SENIOR BRITISH OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP
Lee Rinker, of Jupiter, FL, Pete Oakley, SFPGA Life Member, and Mike San Filippo of Trump International Golf Club, all competed for the 2012 Senior British Open Championship title and a share of the $2 million purse. July 26-29. The championship was played on the Turnberry Ailsa Course in Turnberry, Scotland.
Rinker and San Filippo both finished in a tie for 59 overall after posting a four-round total of 285. We congratulate Rinker, San Filippo and Oakley on their performances on their admirable representation of the South Florida Section at the 2012 Senior British Open Championship.

SFPGA PROS HELP REHABILITATE YOUNG PATIENTS WITH GOLF AT JOE DIMAGGIO CHILDRENS HOSPITAL
Young patients at the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital are using golf to help with their rehab. Every Tuesday through the Smiling Fore Life program supported by the SFPGA Foundation, PGA Professionals, Dave Cunliffe and Darly Hollinshead take turns visiting the hospital in Hollywood, entertaining the young patients for an hour. Not only is the hour of golf rewarding to the patients, but it is also rewarding to Dave and Daryl as they are able to have an impact on the lives of so many children facing hardship at such a young age.

CHIP SHOTS 2012 SFPGA FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIPS AWARDED BOBBY GOODMAN SCHOLARSHIP The 2012 Bobby Goodman Scholarship was awarded to recipient, Marcella Tortorici. The Bobby Goodman Scholarship is a $2,500 grant annually given to a high school senior or college student entering into his/her freshman or sophomore year of undergraduate studies whose parents or grandparents either work in or are retired from the golf industry. This scholarship is named after PGA Professional Bobby Goodman, a man well known to the South Florida PGA record books. Bobby is recognized for his numerous contributions to the game of golf at all levels. The Bobby Goodman Scholarship Fund was created in 1988 by the South Florida PGA Senior Committee in tribute to the late Bobby Goodman. Marcella is the daughter of Patricia and Victor Tortorici, PGA Director of Golf at Sailfish Point Golf Club,. Just completing her freshman year of studies at the University of South Florida, Marcella is pursuing a degree in mass communications.
SFPGA PGM SCHOLARSHIP AT FGCU Colin Baesler of Ft. Myers is the recipient of the 2012 South Florida PGA Professional Golf Management University (PGM) Scholarship at Florida Gulf Coast University. This scholarship is a $2,500 grant annually awarded to one student enrolled in the PGA Golf Management University Program at Florida Gulf Coast University and meeting all eligibility requirements. Baesler, a former U.S. Marine who served nine months in Iraq, from September 2006 to May 2007, began college later than most of his peers, but when he did he knew he wanted to pursue a career in the golf industry. In the Fall of 2008 Baesler enrolled in the Professional Golf Management University Program at Florida Gulf Coast University looking to become a Class A Member. In November of 2009 Baesler passed his Players Ability Test (PAT), and has been on track ever since, expected to graduate this December.
DON E. BEATTIE SCHOLARSHIP Palm Beach County resident, Robert Coman has been selected to receive the 2012 Don E. Beattie Scholarship. This scholarship grant of $2,500 is annually awarded to one Palm Beach County resident. The Don E. Beattie Scholarship was established in 2006 in memory of PGA Professional Don E. Beattie for his service to the South Florida PGA Section as a Past President and for his support of the game of golf. Don E. Beattie was a selfless, giving, unassuming individual dedicated to community outreach efforts and countless charities throughout Palm Beach County. Robert Coman at a young age has displayed similar qualities that Don E. Beattie possessed throughout his entire life. Robert Coman is the son of Kimberly Coman and PGA Professional, Robert Coman, a PGA member since 1990 currently employed as the Director of Golf at Turnberry Isle Resort & Club in Aventura. Coman is known as a talented baseball player in South Florida, and looks forward to continuing on that path after signing a national letter of intent to play baseball at The University of Virginia this fall.

BEST PRACTICES BALLENISLES JUNIOR CUP PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. - An exciting victory for the East team at the BallenIsles Junior Cup after the final round of play on July 22 brought conclusion to the second annual Junior Cup tournament at BallenIsles Country Club. The East team claimed the trophy as they came back from a 3-6 deficit after first day of matches on Saturday, July 21, to win 14.5 to 12.5 over the West team. BallenIsles Country Club hosted its Second Annual Junior Cup Touranment July 19-22. 36 of South Florida’s top junior players gathered to play a Ryder Cup style format at one of the most historically rich courses in South Florida. Separated into the East and West teams (18 players each), these juniors faced off for a chance to call themselves the 2012 BallenIsles Junior Cup Champions. The format for the two days started with 9-hole partner better ball matches followed by 9-hole alternate shot. Day two was singles matches. Many of the top rated juniors who participated in this great event stemmed from the South Florida PGA Junior Tour where they have been developing their skills throughout the spring and summer months.
“The BallenIsles Junior Cup allows us to give back to the community, grow the game of golf and spotlight elite junior players. These young ladies and gentlemen have our admiration and congratulations,” said Brian Kelley, director of golf at BallenIsles Country Club as stated in a press release from PR Newswire. Providing a playing field where these juniors can compete in both a collaborative and competitive environment helps to promote commoroderie and teamwork while encouraging the young generation of upcoming golfers in South Florida. In addition to providing these juniors with the opportunity to compete with their peers in a little-played match play environment, Scholarship For Athletes, a company that educates students and their families about the recruiting process, was also on site providing information about golf scholarships for players and their families.
Growing the game, and successfully growing new players begins with creating new interest and nurturing upcoming talents. Ensuring the future of our great sport means encouraging our young and upcoming athletes who are just finding their footing in the golf world. BallenIsles Country Club has done just that by creating an event that showcases the top talent in South Florida as well as provides local juniors with a taste of “Tour hospitality”.
The event kicked-off on Thursday evening as players and parents were invited out to the course to partake in a demonstration day featuring sponsors Cleveland Golf and Srixon giving the young athletes the opportunity to test drivers and other equipment, giving the juniors a taste of tour attention. A pairings party followed the demonstration where pairings were drawn and teammates and rivals alike enjoyed a night of comoroderie before competition began.
In addition to conducting an incredible event, BallenIsles has attracted positive media attention nationwide. TIP OF THE MONTH
Generating new players can seem like a huge feat. For many non-golfers, the barrier for keeping them from the game is that it is too intimidating… and too hard. A way to make learning the fundamentals of golf fun and easy for beginners is to use a non-traditional approach to teaching through non-traditional equipment. KEY LARGO, Fla. Jerry Impellittiere of Palm City changed partners but it didn’t change the outcome as he won the South Florida PGA Pro-Pro Championship for the second year in a row on July 11, 2012 at the Ocean Reef Club. An SFPGA Life Member, Impellittiere and Bud Taylor, director of golf at Old Palm Golf Club in Palm Beach Gardens, beat the Lost Tree Club pairing of Brian Peaper, head professional, and Ed Humenik, assistant, on the second playoff hole on the Dolphin course.

After they tied at 17 under par 127, the two teams matched par-3s at the 18th hole, then Impellittiere made birdie-3 at the first hole for the win. Impellittiere and Taylor shot 63-64 in the four-ball stroke play format, Peaper and Humenik 64-63 to finish second. Both teams played the shorter Hammock course during round one on July 10, and the Dolphin for round two on the July 11. All 62 teams played one round on each course. Oakley qualified for the U.S. Senior Open which took place July 12-15 in Michigan. TEQUESTA, Fla. – 30 South Florida PGA Professionals comprising of 15 teams competed at Tequesta Country Club on July 13 in the 5th Annual Senior-Super Senior Event. Taking home first place honors was the team of Larry Laoretti of Palm City and Mike San Filippo of Hobe Sound. They carded at total of 8 birdies, 1 eagle and a bogie in route to a 9 under par score of 62 and a winners check of $800. Finishing just one stroke back and in second place was the team of Jerry Tucker and Steve Benson. 2011 champions, Roger Kennedy and Harry Parker finished tied for 9th with a 3 under par 68. We would like to thank Chris Hayes, PGA , head professional at Tequesta Country Club, for all of his support in hosting this great event. The Event was supported by the PGA Tour.

NAPLES, Fla. – Chris Trout, PGA sank a 25-foot putt for an eagle on the first playoff hole to win the 33rd annual South Florida PGA Pro-Scratch presented by Nike Golf and supported by Tour Sticks Monday at the Club at Mediterra. Representing Cypress Lake Country Club of Fort Myers, Trout and amateur Rikki Rogan outlasted two other local teams after a tie at 11 under par 61: John Calabria and Mike Andre, Golf Club @ Fiddlers Creek, Naples, and Jay Westerlund and Phil Olive, Club at Renaissance, Fort Myers. Calabria missed an eagle chip, Olive a 40-foot putt for a halve. The field played the North course at the Club at Mediterra. A 6,897 yard par 72 test of skill. Big thanks to Mediterra for hosting this event and to the professional and shop staff, especially Rob Anderson, PGA and Steven Oldfield, PGA for all of their support.

JUNIOR TOUR NEWS JUNIOR TOUR #8 OCEAN REEF CLUB KEY LARGO, Fla. - The South Florida PGA Junior Tour presented by the Honda Classic hosted Event #8 at Ocean Reef Club in Key Largo July 12-13.

Tim Cahill of West Palm Beach won his second Overall title of the year by shooting 68-73 to claim a 2-shot victory. Tying for first in the Boys 16-18 division, with a 143, were Robert Butler of Estero, and Gage Marino of Palm Beach Gardens. Finishing third with a 145 was Steven LaMay. Zachary Bariso of Boca Raton won the Boys 14-15 age division with a 145. Coming in second place from Tequesta, was Nick Gagliardi with a 147. Finishing third with a 148 was Jake Holt of Jupiter.

Coming in first place in the Girls 16-18 division and Tim Cahill was Caitlin Huiting of Pompano Beach with a 152. Tying for second place with a 160 was Michelle Haramboure of Miami, and Taylor Moody of Plantation. In the Girls 14-15 division, there was a three way tie for first place with a score of 157: Emily Faulkner of Palm City, Mary Janiga of Wellington, and Jenna Tuccio of Marco Island. Jeffrey Cunningham of West Palm Beach claimed the Boys 12-13 title with a two-day score of 146. Finishing in second place with a 147 from Weston was Alberto Martinez. Tying for third place with a 151, was James Greco of Parkland and Sebastian Diaz of Weston. Kaely Krayeski of Wellington won her second Girls 12-13 title of the year with a 153. Finishing second with a 157 was Tanya Eathakotti of Miami. Coming in third with a 162 was Sabrina Fonda of Wellington. JUNIOR TOUR #9 PLANTATION PRESERVE ATLANTIS, FL – The South Florida PGA Junior Tour presented by the Honda Classic hosted Event #9 at Plantation Preserve in Plantation July 24-25. Daniel Whelan of Coral Springs won his second Overall title of the year by shooting 69-68 to claim a 3-shot victory. First place in the Boys 16-18 division went to Michael Anderson of Parkland with a 141. There was a three way tie for second place with a 143: Brandon Meyer of Lehigh Acres, Jonah Wasserstrom of Hollywood, and Jesus Delgado of Fort Lauderdale. Anastasia Talalenko, Brian Schuler, PGA, Jackson Shoenfelt of Boynton Beach claimed the Boys 14-15 title by and Daniel Whelan shooting a second round 66, the low round of the tournament and year on tour. Shoenfelt finished with a 2-day score of 140. Finishing second was Zachary Bariso of Boca Raton. Tying for third place with a 153 was Eduardo Blochtein of Delray Beach and Matthew Galluzzo of Plantation.
Anastasia Talalenko of Naples claimed her first Girls Overall title with a 3 shot lead over the field. Talalenko finished with a 148. For the Girls 16-18 division there was a three way tie with a 152: Ashley Burke of Boynton Beach, Janelle Johnson of Royal Palm Beach, and Casey Farmer of Deerfield Beach. In the Girls 14-15 division, Samantha Haubenstock from Weston finished first with a 151. Coming in second place from Aventura was Ariana Garcia. Finishing third with a 182 was Tracy Peyton from Boynton Beach. Alberto Martinez of Weston won the Boys 12-13 division by shooting a 2-under round of 142. With a 146, Anthony Muttillo of Boca Raton came in second place. Finishing third with a 147 was Andrew Kozan of Palm Beach Gardens. Claiming her fourth Girls 12-13 title of the year was Valeria Sofia from Hallandale Beach, with a 158. Finishing second with a 163 was Julia Matzat of Parkland. Coming in third from Boca Raton, was Andie Shukow with a 166.
