This is especially important for the children of Habitat families. Within the communities we have built, the children have gone on to excel academically, graduating high school and, in several instances, receiving college scholarships. Perhaps more important, we consistently see a sharp decrease in area crime. Kids are able to get out on the course and play 3 to 4 holes, best ball format, from 6 PM to 7:30 PM on Friday evenings. PGA Professional Gary Braeseke of the Cooper Colony Country Club began running these events almost a year ago. GOLF NIGHT AT ROGER DEAN PLAY GOLF AMERICA
JUPITER, Fla. - Golf Night at Roger Dean Stadium was a success this past Friday, May 11th as South Florida Section PGA professionals shared their love of the game with baseball fans as the Jupiter Hammerheads faced off against the Tampa Yankees. The evening’s festivities kicked off with John Webster, PGA, of the John Webster Golf Academy; Kevin Compare, PGA, of the Divot the Clown Corporation; and Chris Czaja, PGA, of the Boca West Club engaged the fans in an introductory clinic with the use of SNAG golf equipment. Kevin Compare also demonstrated a few of his famous and incredible trick shots for the crowd. Also, before the game and throughout the first few innings, fans took the opportunity to get free lessons from PGA professional Bobby P. Petelinker of The Florida Club. Petelinker offered free one-on-one advice for participants of Golf Night at Roger Dean Stadium. The evening was centered around growing golf awareness in the community and also featured participation from a variety of local courses who donated over 300 rounds of free golf to the first 300 game entrants, as well as the First Tee of The Palm Beaches who brought out fun games and activities for the fans.
GOLF 2.0
TIP OF THE MONTH
12 HOLE ROUNDS Accepting that modern-day families rarely have time for 5-hour rounds, Jack Nicklaus, the winner of 18 major championships, proposed 12-hole rounds that could be played in 2½ hours. He put this plan into action at his Muirfield Village course north of Columbus last Labor Day. Coupled with forward tees and doublesized golf holes (8 inches in diameter), most of the players finished in 2 hours, 15 minutes. Encouraging 12-hole rounds for the golfers at your facility who either lack the talent or conviction to play a full, 18-holes makes golf seem more “do-able”, and even more enjoyable. While cutting down on frustration for the “in between” golfers who enjoy neither only 9 nor the full 18 holes, it also cuts down on the time it takes to play a round. For those who care more about playing socially — and playing quickly — than competing, it’s a good proposal. It’s a lot easier to carve out a 2½-hour time block for entertainment and fun than burning the whole day on the course and leaving frustrated and exhausted. Proposing a 12-hole social league at your club may encourage those “in between” golfers to get out and play; and play often. For those trying to encourage more female and senior membership play on your course, consider promoting this more unconventional 12-hole style approach to the game with leagues or member outings.

CHIP SHOTS VISCONTI’S HEROIC EFFORTS ON THE COURSE BENEFITS OUR NATIONS HEROS South Florida PGA Professional Danny Visconti made a heroic effort on Friday, May 18th, by completing 111 holes of golf during nearly 12 hours of continuous play, to honor our nation’s military heroes and raise money for the Folds of Honor Foundation. The Folds of Honor Foundation is an organization that provides support to the spouses and children of service men and women who are killed or injured protecting our country. The day started as he hit his first tee shot at 6:38 A.M. He finished after putting out on his last hole at 5:08 P.M. With just two 7 minute breaks during the round as well as with the use of 4 different carts, Visconti was able to complete 111 holes over the course of the day. Members could donate in one of two ways: Pledge a dollar amount per hole played, or a set amount such as $50 or $100 for the day. Through his efforts, and the generous donations of his membership, Visconti was able to raise over $10,000 for the Folds of Honor Foundation, and is still continuing to receive more donations even after Friday’s event. Visconti was inspired for this fundraiser by another fundraising activity he experienced several years ago that was called “The Longest Day of Golf”, which served as a benefit for cancer. Visconi did not want to rely solely on the successes of Patriot Golf Day fundraising activities. His passion for the Folds of Honor Foundation stems from his own experience with family members serving in the services.
“I have two uncles that served in WWII, one of which was severely injured but managed to survive until well into his 80's. I also have a brother that served in the Army for 20 years, so the sacrifice that these men & women provide for this country is immeasurable,” Visconti states. “Sadly enough, it seems that as a country, we have lost some of that appreciation for these veterans.” Visconti felt that with the high amount of veteran clientele in the South Florida area, he would be able to find strong support for his worthy cause, and he was not mistaken. Visconti had one member alone tier their donation so that the more holes Visconti was able to finish, the more he would be able to earn for the Foundation. Their final donation alone was $3,700. “I have already had several members suggest as to how to increase the donations next year. Several were out following me around… so needless to say but this can only grow from here!” Visconti stated. Visconti’s efforts for the Folds of Honor Foundation have been a great success. This is one very powerful example of a South Florida PGA Member using his talents for the benefit of a worthy cause that benefits the families of wounded veterans. Dropping the Ball If you were watching the final round of the Player’s Championship a few weeks back and found yourself scratching your head after watching the final hole, you’re not alone. Kevin Na had just hit his drive right of the cart path on 18. The announcers made note that Kevin would probably have to take relief from the cart path. The broadcast shifted its attention to eventual champion, Matt Kuchar who had a two shot lead. A few moments later, the camera switched its focus to Kevin who was dropping his ball on the cart path. The announcers gave no explanation of why he was dropping on the path or what he was taking relief from which made some people, myself included, thinking he was taking relief from the cart path. I immediately said out loud to myself, “He can’t do that.” The only explanation I could figure was that he was not taking relief from the path.
Rule 24-2 would have prevented his actions.
After watching this particular situation play out on national tv, it got me thinking about places on the course you can and cannot drop your ball when taking relief. I went through the Decisions book and found several examples. For instance, Decision 28/4 and 25-1b/14 explain that a player may declare the ball unplayable and then drop in a hazard or in an area marked as ground under repair. Decision 24-2b/10 allows a player when taking relief from an immovable obstruction situated in an area of ground under repair to drop the ball in the ground under repair when taking relief. Similar to Decision 24-2b/10, Decision 25-2a/4 says a player whose ball is embedded in an area of ground under repair may drop his ball in the area of ground under repair when taking relief. As an additional option under Decision 24-2b/10 and 25-2a/4, a player who drops his ball in the area SFPGA TOURNAMENT DIRECTOR of ground under repair who doesn’t like ANDREW MILLER the result, may then take relief without penalty under Rule 24-2 or 25-2. And Rule 24-2 states that finally, Decision 26-1/2 allows a player a player can take relief from an immovable when taking relief from a water hazard or lateral water obstruction (cart path) for a ball which lies hazard to drop his ball in a bunker or another water through the green by dropping his ball within hazard. Please take a look at these Decisions for furone club length of the nearest point of relief no ther explanation. closer to the hole. The Rules goes on to say, “When the ball is dropped within one club length of the nearest point of relief, the ball must first strike a part of the course at a spot that avoids interference by the immovable obstruction and is not in a hazard and not on a putting green.” That statement right there prevents Kevin from taking relief from the path by dropping his ball on the path. Thus, Kevin must have been taking relief from something other than that obstruction. My guess is that Kevin was taking relief under Rule 25-1. When Kevin’s ball came to rest near the cart path, it looked like there were cart ruts and a flower garden near his ball. I bet one of those areas was declared ground under repair by the committee. That would have allowed Kevin to take relief under Rule 25-1 which states that, “when the ball is dropped within one In closing, I wish I could pass along an easy way of club length of the nearest point of relief, the ball must first remembering or reference guide to tell you where you strike a part of the course at a spot that avoids interference can and cannot drop when taking relief from given by the condition and is not in a hazard and not on a putting situations but there really isn’t one. The only suggesgreen.” Notice the Rule says nothing about not allowing the tion I can make is to just memorize the places you player to drop on an obstruction. It only says the player must can’t drop under the relief rules (Rules: 20, 21, 22, 23, not drop the ball in a hazard or on a putting green and must 24, 25, 26, 27 and 28). It may seem like a lot, but in drop his ball where there would not be interference from the aball actuality the Rule of Golf prevent you from dropping normal ground condition. Without clarification from the announcin very few places. ers, I assumed Kevin was proceeding under Rule 25-1 given that
