MESSAGE FROM SFPGA FOUNDATION PRESIDENT

TOM WILDENHAUS, PGA

This was a year to remember! The efforts of the last 12 months were capstoned by our Section winning the National Herb Graffis Award for our achievements in player development. From the beginning of 2019, it’s incredible to reflect and be amazed by our accomplishments in fulfilling our mission of “serving the south Florida community and changing lives through the game of golf.” Each year we strive to impact more lives, no matter the accolades. But this year, our programs were successful because of the support of our generous donors and PGA Professionals. In September, we began the restoration of our eighth home through Habitat for Humanity in Puerto Rico. This year’s home build took place on the still-recovering island, post Hurricane Maria. The PGA Professionals of our Island Chapter have laid the groundwork for an amazing new home for a well-deserving family. This home brings us one step closer toward our goal of building a home in every county of the South Florida Section, including Puerto Rico. One of my favorite events every year is the home dedication ceremony, and I look forward to being a part of that at the beginning of next year. It’s amazing to see this idealized goal progress to reality as another family is gifted a home thanks to our Foundation. Tennis balls catapulting toward SNAG targets down the halls of a children’s hospital convey the accomplishments of our Smiling Fore Life program. This program provides smiles for pediatric patients across five different healthcare facilities thanks to fifteen PGA Professionals serving over 1,100 patients. Visiting Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, Palm Beach Children’s Hospital, Quantum House, The Southwest Children’s Hospital at Lee Memorial and Nicklaus Children’s Hospital in Miami, our Professionals provide young patients the opportunity to take their minds off the hardships they are facing and try a new, fun activity. This program is provided free of charge to these families and is truly making a difference in many lives. Over the last five years, PGA HOPE (Helping Our Patriots Everywhere) has impacted over 600 veterans by providing free golf instruction to military veterans. In this previous year we hosted 15 programs for more than 160 local veterans. Five new facilities hosted a HOPE program this year, including Puerto Rico. This program provides local veterans with an opportunity to learn the game of golf as a form of therapy and assimilation back into civilian life. We’ve watched it change the lives of many and in great ways, including Army Specialist Mary AndersonKokell, who now serves as the PGA HOPE Ambassador for south Florida. We also celebrated the efforts of SFPGA member Judy Alvarez, PGA, who was awarded the 2019 National Patriot Award. This award recognizes a PGA member who personifies patriotism through the game of golf and demonstrates unwavering commitment and dedication to all who have served the United States. Because of PGA Professionals like Judy, and the testimonies of participants like Mary, we have conducted 39 successful HOPE programs, and we look forward to the continued growth of this program moving forward. As you continue to read, we will share stories of the individuals whose lives have been changed through the game of golf, and specifically through our Foundation programs administered throughout south Florida. These stories highlight the character of our PGA Professionals who make our programs a success. Their diligence to serve and care for their local communities makes these stories hit home and express just how great an impact our Foundation has made. We could not have made the impact on the communities of south Florida without the support of PGA Professionals, great friends and donors. Whether support comes through volunteer hours or donations, we need both to achieve our goals. Once again, thank you and we look forward to seeing you at one of our events in 2020! Sincerely,

Tom Wildenhaus, PGA Foundation President

THOUSANDS OF SMILES BRINGING HAPPINESS TO CHILDREN FACING HARDSHIP Once a week, excited cheers can be heard resounding off the halls of children’s healthcare facilities. Tennis balls are flying down the hallway, and bright colorful SNAG Golf equipment catches your eye. This is the art of Smiling Fore Life, and the heart of this program involves PGA Professionals seeking to produce smiles for pediatric patients facing hardships. In 2010, the South Florida PGA Foundation created Smiling Fore Life, a program where SFPGA Professionals visit local children’s hospitals weekly. The PGA Professionals afford them with an opportunity to forget about the struggles they are experiencing, get out of their hospital room and enjoy a fun and new activity. In addition to the great benefits this program provides to the children, it also affords SFPGA Professionals the opportunity to get more involved in the local community.

The high-fives, the smiles, the laughs make it fun. And some days it’s not even about how well they are playing. Something goofy happens and they are just laughing, and that’s worth the whole day. Dave Pesacov, PGA Smiling Fore Life Instructor

Currently four hospitals and one children’s healthcare facility participate in this program at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital in Hollywood, the Children’s Hospital at St. Mary’s Medical Center in West Palm Beach, Golisano Children’s Hospital of SW Florida in Fort Myers, the Quantum House in West Palm Beach, and Nicklaus Children’s Hospital in Miami. After nine years, this program has experienced much growth and success and impacts more than 1,100 young patients annually. However, the success of this program can be found in the lives impacted. “The most amazing part is that all of the kids have success,” according to Roberta Jurney, President & CEO of Quantum House in West Palm Beach. “It doesn’t matter what their illness is, it doesn’t matter what their disability is. Every kid that is out there on the putting green, the PGA Professionals make them feel like they’re champs, and that’s always wonderful.” It leaves an impact on our PGA Professionals who assist in the program as well. Dave Pesacov, one of the first PGA Professionals who participated in Smiling Fore Life, explained, “The high-fives, the smiles, the laughs make it fun. And some days it’s not even about how well they are playing. Something goofy happens and they are just laughing, and that’s worth the whole day.”

YEARS OF HOPE BONDING BROTHERS IN ARMS When Army Veteran Dave Thomas started PGA HOPE in 2016—the first program offered in Palm Beach County—he underestimated the greater impact it would have. This fall, his brother, Air Force Veteran Philip Thomas, graduated from PGA HOPE at Southwinds Golf Course and left a lasting impact on the Thomas brothers. “I pressured him to do something with me to get out of the house, and learning the game of golf is a great way to decompress,” said Dave, who brought Philip to PGA HOPE after experiencing its impact. PGA HOPE (Helping Our Veterans Everywhere) introduces golf to veterans with disabilities to enhance their physical, mental, social and emotional well-being. Golf sessions are offered at no cost to veterans and are taught by PGA Professionals.

Since 2015, our team has graduated almost 600 men and women from PGA HOPE in South Florida. Almost all who graduate express that their lives have been changed. And as a coach, being involved and seeing the impact makes me so grateful. Dave McNulty, PGA 2019 SFPGA Patriot Award

Dave, the elder of the two, served for 23 years as part of the United States Army, while Philip was part of the United States Air Force before becoming a police officer in south Florida. “Since going through the HOPE program, it has allowed me to get out and socialize with other veterans and lean on some of the other veterans through the difficult times we’ve had,” explained Dave. While transitioning out of life in the military can be hard enough, Dave and Philip have been faced with some of life’s toughest battles personally. The Thomas brothers’ mother and father have been fighting different forms of cancer. “The game of golf has been a great outlet,” said Philip, who was reluctant to first get involved. “It took a while because I prefer to bowl, but this has become a way to spend time with my brother and keep him out of depression.” Not easily convinced to join the program, Philip proposed a wager. Philip would learn his brother’s preferred sport, and in one year, if he beats Dave at golf, then Dave would have to take on Philip’s favorite sport: bowling. After going through PGA HOPE, Philip understood why his brother had been pressuring him. “You tend to gravitate to the different people you meet in this program because we share a common bond,” explained Philip. “I would have never joined had Dave not encouraged me to do it. The game of golf builds relationships, so whether you are a veteran or not, this is a great game to learn.” Those relationships are what have propelled Dave and Philip to cope with their post-war and personal struggles in a positive manner. “The people you meet in HOPE are constantly there for each other; whether it is a phone call to check in or an invite to come out and play golf to get our minds off things, it has been a wonderful group to be a part of,” said Dave. When Dave first began with PGA HOPE in 2016, the South Florida PGA Foundation offered just two programs, graduating 10 participants. This year, the SFPGA Foundation has administered programs all over south Florida and has graduated 160 participants, including Philip. “This program is awesome,” said Philip. “I am so fortunate that the PGA does this for us.”

2019 NATIONAL PATRIOT AWARD Judy Alvarez, PGA Director of Instruction at Monarch Country Club (Palm City), accepted the National Patriot Award in early November at the PGA of America Annual Awards Dinner. The celebration came as part of the 103rd PGA Annual Meeting that was held at the Convention Center in West Palm Beach. The Patriot Award annually recognizes a PGA member who personifies patriotism through the game of golf and demonstrates unwavering commitment and dedication to all who have served the United States. Alvarez has been teaching golf to people with disabilities and veterans since 1990 and has been involved in Folds of Honor, PGA HOPE and Salute Military Golf Association. “I’ve always felt compelled to share with local organizations what I do and how the game of golf can help benefit our veterans,” said Alvarez. “My goal is to provide a safe environment for a veteran to let their guard down, relax, feel safe and enjoy the experience. Ultimately it is about their accomplishments.” Alvarez has helped establish six PGA HOPE programs in South Florida, impacting more than 600 veterans in the region. Additionally, Alvarez hosts a free golf clinic for veterans once a week, provides year-round adaptive golf programs and has been an advocate for golf and the impact the game can have on veterans. Throughout her career, Alvarez has taught more than 10,000 veterans and students with disabilities the game. The PGA of America annually recognizes 11 PGA Professionals and one PGA Section on the national stage for their service and commitment to the game of golf. We are thankful to have resilient PGA Professionals like Judy who have such a great impact on our Foundation programming. Especially Professionals who are making a difference in the lives of our nation’s heroes. PGA HOPE AMBASSADOR HELPING OUR PATRIOTS EVERYWHERE Army Specialist Mary Anderson-Kokell was selected to represent south Florida as a PGA HOPE Ambassador for the life-changing program Helping Our Patriots Everywhere. Mary participated in one of the first PGA HOPE programs in 2015. Since then, Mary has proven the life-changing power of PGA HOPE. Mary was selected based on the impact this program had on her life and the impact she had on her fellow veterans. Mary participated in the inaugural National Health & Wellness Week presented by PGA REACH. The 20 Veterans were named PGA HOPE Ambassadors following the completion of a specialized training program during the inaugural PGA HOPE National Golf & Wellness Week, which was conducted in October at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Maryland. The four-day program included advanced golf instruction and wellness training. Each participating Veteran received a specially designed golf and wellness tool kit that included golf training tips, exercises and other recommendations for healthy living. Each new PGA HOPE Ambassador will now represent their respective PGA of America Section and support their fellow Veterans in communities across the country during PGA HOPE clinics and training programs. Mary has already served as a valuable asset for PGA HOPE in south Florida, and we can’t wait to see how she can improve our already life-changing program for veterans. To learn more about Mary’s weekend in Washington, please visit https://www.sfpgagolf.com/PGAHOPE.html.

THE JOURNEY THROUGH TIME FROM TEAM GOLF TO DIV/COLLEGIATE GOLF Chad Tracy played his last tournament with the South Florida PGA Junior Tour this summer before heading off to begin his collegiate career at Thomas University. Before departing, Tracy left his mark. The recent alum won two of the SFPGA Junior Tour’s five majors this summer, the South Florida Junior Open (66-75-72, 213) and the Doral Junior Classic (69-73, 142). “My favorite memories of the SFPGA Junior Tour include playing so many amazing courses, competing with great players and the numerous opportunities to build friendships over the years,” said Tracy. An active participant on the SFPGA Junior Tour for the last five years, the PGA impacted Tracy long before he picked up a golf club. His father, Don, a PGA member, coached his high school golf team at Naples High School.

“My dad has always been an inspiration to me,” said Tracy. “He allowed me to play any sport I was interested in, and to be honest, golf was the last sport I picked up.” However, once he started playing, the game came easily to him and became a common bond between father and son. “When I started playing competitively, my dad helped me out a great deal,” explained Tracy. “I am very thankful to have had such a great role model who has shown me that a good work ethic and a positive attitude can benefit me on and off the golf course.” In addition to his father, the SFPGA Junior Tour helped Tracy flourish as a young golfer aspiring to have a college career. “The SFPGA tournaments helped me prepare for college in many ways,” said Tracy. “With so many great events with strong fields, there were many times when the courses or conditions were tough, and learning how to play in those types of conditions helped me learn a lot about my game, in turn making me a better player.” Now at Thomas University, an NAIA school in Thomasville, Ga., Tracy encourages young golfers to keep playing golf, recognizing the SFPGA Junior Tour as a great avenue to do so. “The two biggest pieces of advice I can give someone who wants to play at the collegiate level are to practice as much as you can in every aspect of your game (especially short game) and to play in as many tournaments as possible,” Tracy said. “When playing in tournaments, you learn how to compete as well as learn to play in a variety of conditions.” Tracy also highlights how important it is to have a strong mental game and positive attitude when you are playing, to keep consistent with your game. Now that he is a few months into the semester, Tracy has begun to adjust to college life and the new opportunities that come with it. “Playing for Thomas University has been an amazing experience thus far,” Tracy said. “It is a completely new level of competition, where the players work hard to represent our school and compete in tournaments. Though we are competitive, the team goes out of their way to be supportive of one another.” We wish Tracy the best in his college endeavors, both on and off the course.

KEYS TO HAPPINESS REBUILDING A COMMUNITY AFTER LONG-LASTING TRAGEDY The South Florida PGA Island Chapter, through the support of the South Florida PGA Foundation, broke ground on a Habitat for Humanity project this fall in Loiza, Puerto Rico. This marks the eighth home the SFPGA Foundation has sponsored. Since the partnership with Habitat for Humanity began, the SFPGA Foundation has built eight homes and plans to build a total of 15, one in each county of the South Florida Section, which includes Puerto Rico. Beginning Tuesday, October 22nd, PGA Professionals began restoring a house in Loiza which was destroyed in the wake of Hurricane Irma. With a completion date expected in early December, the house will be gifted to a Puerto Rican family in need. Once all 15 homes have been built, the Foundation will have granted $400,000 to Habitat for Humanity, and more than 15,000 volunteer hours. The South Florida PGA Foundation believes it is important that PGA Professionals get involved in the community in a way that expands beyond golf.

The Foundation is creating a forever home for a family, and that’s really special.

Tony Loyola, PGA Island Chapter President

SFPGA FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP COLLEGE MADE A LITTLE EASIER Developed in 2018, the South Florida PGA Foundation annually provides one local student with a four-year, $20,000 scholarship to assist with their college education. The student selected to receive the scholarship will receive it in $5,000 increments over the course of four years. In order to receive funding each year, additional paperwork including a copy of the student’s transcript must be submitted to the SFPGA Foundation to ensure the student is performing at an acceptable level. To learn more about our Foundation Scholarship, visit https://www.sfpgagolf.com/foundation-scholarship.html.

Others should apply for this because it is such a huge help with paying for college. It really provides a great opportunity for whoever receives the SFPGA Foundation Scholarship next year.

Concerning the graph above: In the last two years, we have consolidated our scholarship giving into one Foundation Scholarship. While we are offering a total $20,000 to the final scholarship recipient, our total giving will only increase by $5,000 because of the incremental giving to each recipient. Each year in school, our recipient will receive one-fourth of the total scholarship. In 2020, we plan on rewarding our third Foundation Scholarship winner, and increasing our giving by $5,000.

DEPIRRO BUILDS FOUNDATION OF SUPPORT FOR FOUNDATION FIRST TRUSTEE FOR THE SFPGA FOUNDATION The foundations of charitable organizations are built on the generous support of others. And for the South Florida PGA Foundation, trustees serve as the rebar that upholds the financial foundation and provides substantial support for all our various programs. As our Foundation continues to grow, increasing in participation and programming, we have a greater need for support. That is why we are so thankful for our first SFPGA Foundation Trustee, Pat DePirro, the CEO of BirdieBox. A longtime partner of the Section, DePirro has provided tee gifts, insight and participation in events. However, DePirro is looking forward to coming alongside the SFPGA Foundation for the next five years, making a $10,000 donation annually. “The idea of being a trustee and getting to see where your funds go and see the impact on the community and the lives change” compelled DePirro to accept the invitation to be a Foundation Trustee. Being from Miami, Pat knows the difference the Foundation is making in south Florida; but having the opportunity to see it, touch it and feel the impact gave him a greater sense of commitment to his south Florida community.

Community, integrity, fair play, getting active and supporting the less fortunate

“Community, integrity, fair play, getting active and supporting the less fortunate”—DePirro used these descriptors for the South Florida PGA Foundation staff and their values, which played a large role in his decision to invest in them… and, in turn, the Foundation. “It’s a great time for a message of unity,” continued DePirro, explaining why now more than ever others should consider investing in the South Florida PGA Foundation. Our Foundation team is so thankful for partners like Pat, who make it possible for us to fulfill our mission: “PGA Professionals dedicated to serving the south Florida community and changing lives through the game of golf.” We look forward to continued growth of our programs because of the foundational support of key members like our Trustees. I choose to collaborate with the SFPGA Foundation because the people are genuine, authentic and committed to investing in and giving back to the community in impactful and meaningful ways. It’s really quite tremendous to use the game of golf as a launchpad to bring lasting and meaningful change into the lives of others who are in need, and to be able to do so with people who I admire and am grateful for.

Rob Torrington, PGA PGA HOPE Classic Committee Member

This year Rob did 40,000 push-ups as a fund-raising campaign and raised over $20,000 to support our military program, PGA HOPE.

2019 HERB GRAFFIS NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED FOR PLAYER DEVELOPMENT The South Florida PGA received the Herb Graffis Award during the 103rd PGA Annual Meeting at the Convention Center in West Palm Beach. The Herb Graffis Award is designed to recognize a PGA of America Section for extraordinary contributions in the area of player development. By prioritizing youth, diversity and the military, the South Florida PGA aims to impact more lives in south Florida through the game of golf. In junior golf, the SFPGA offers year-round programs for all ages, impacting more than 9,300 youth golfers over the past 12 years. In 2007, seven events were conducted for 250 participants, and in 2018 over 150 events were administered for over 1,700 participants, an increase of 700 percent. In addition to extensive junior golf programming, the SFPGA Foundation has impacted more than 12,000 lives through junior golf, charitable gifting and scholarships. “This award is a testament to the tireless effort of South Florida PGA members who strive to grow participation and enjoyment in the game of golf every day at their facilities throughout the section,” said Geoff Lofstead, Executive Director of the South Florida PGA. “It is also a testament to our Section and Foundation board of directors for providing the direction and resources that have made growing the game a primary initiative of Section staff. It is an incredible honor to be recognized on a national level, among the great work being done by the 41 PGA sections around the country.” The PGA of America annually recognizes 11 PGA Professionals and one PGA Section. In addition to the national award as a Section, Judy Alvarez, PGA was recognized for her work with veterans by receiving the Patriot Award. Approximately 1,830 members and apprentices are employed at over 475 facilities in the South Florida region, currently ranking South Florida Section the second largest Section of PGA Professionals among all 41 PGA Sections in the United States. Back in 1979, the growth and golf population boom in the state of Florida caused what was once known as just the Florida Section to divide geographically into two Sections, now known as the North Florida and the South Florida PGA Sections. Geographically, the South Florida PGA extends as far north as Vero Beach on the east coast, to Punta Gorda on the west coast, and south through the Florida Keys, in addition to Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The South Florida PGA Section is further divided into four distinct Chapters, including the Southern, Southeast, Southwest and Island Chapters.
