Elastic Loops for solo piano
COMPOSED IN 2007. EXTENSIVELY REVISED IN 2018.
DURATION: 13 minutes TECHNICAL NOTES: Fermatas: most fermatas in this piece are presented with a suggested duration. Any fermatas that do not have an accompanying duration are left up to the performer, like a traditional fermata. Grace notes: all grace notes are played before the beat and are as short as possible. Pedals: both the sostenuto and sustain pedal are used in this piece, sometimes both at the same time. When the sostenuto pedal is used, the notes in brackets are the ones that should be held by the pedal. Repeats: as the title of the piece suggests, much of Elastic Loops involves repetition. All repeated measures have a number (or range of numbers) above the measure which indicates the total number of times the measure is played. Sometimes, a very short segment is repeated for a specific duration of time rather than a certain number of times. These moments have a duration in seconds above them – while the performer should endeavor to stay close to the suggested duration, these durations are meant to be approximate. Rhythmic notation: this piece is comprised of music that is precisely metered as well as music that is a rapid-fire stream of sixteenth notes that do not conform to any clear metrical breakdown. The former are notated normally, with time signatures and beaming that shows the metrical breakdown of the bar. The latter are all beamed together, with no time signatures given and dashed barlines indicating where phrases or patterns begin and end. The non-metered music should always be played evenly as steady sixteenth notes. Sustained notes: a few sections of the piece use a solid black line to indicate which notes in the stream of sixteenth notes should be sustained with the finger. In these instances, the note should be sustained in relation to how long the black line extends through the measure. This kind of notation is only used in the opening and closing sections of the piece. Tempos: though Elastic Loops has frequent shifts in mood, tempos do not change unless explicitly indicated. Most of the piece should be played at a steady, breakneck pace.
