• Card: Create a background with a die-cut machine or by handcutting a pattern onto the card base. Add more detail with hand-drawn white pen lines. Make a cute cinched ribbon effect by pulling the brad prongs apart and sliding in the ribbon. Then, simply push them back together and secure to the project.

Add more dimension and detail to pre-made embellishments by adding mini-brads. Try creating a circle pattern on a diecut or layering the brads in the centers of sequins.
Create a unique and festive border by inserting brads near the corners and then wrapping twine around them.

Use a stitching template to create a pattern for brads. So that the project doesn’t get too heavy, use stitching to balance things out.

Use a decorative brad -- many companies make them to match paper collections -as a flower center.

I love finding ways to pull elements from the pictures and incorporate them into the overall design of the page. Circles were all over the pictures we had taken during a trip to the park, so I wanted to find a way to use circles on my layout. I started with an 8" circle in place of the 8x8 photo block on the left page. I kept the 8" measurement the same and used the same sized photos. I also added layers of larger circles to represent the background pieces on the sketch.

I used an extra 4x4 photo in place of the title block on the sketch and moved the title to the center. I had more photos than the sketch suggests so I had to find a way to include more.

Instead of banner strips, I used that area to include more circles. I created a grouping of circles in several sizes around the left edge of the large photo circle similar to the banner strips on the sketch.

Not only did I have a lot more photos that I wanted to include but I also was working with all those photos being horizontal only. None of them could be cropped down to 4x4 without losing important pieces of the pictures. I decided to use 4x3 photos and a 4x3 title block in place of the 4x4 photos and title block on the sketch.

Since the photos extend to the edges I had to find new places for the smaller, framed photos on the sketch. On the left page it's pretty much in the same spot, except it's actually on top of the photos. On the right page they are close to the same area but I had to move them down so I wasn't covering too much of the photos. I also added an extra photo.

The design on the left page of the sketch was perfect for adapting to a one-page layout. I used a 5x7 photo in place of the 8x8 block of photos and title.

Since I only had one photo that I wanted to include I shrunk all of the elements to fit that one photo. Proportionally the papers are all still roughly the same, with the same background pieces that are on the sketch, just on a smaller scale.

The smaller elements on the page left lots of open space. White space isn’t bad, but I wanted to eliminate a bit of that. I added strips on left and right edges. Since I used a photo in place of the title block on the sketch I had to find a new spot for my title. I used it in place of the 2x2 framed photo over the banner strips. The journaling on the sketch is on the right page so I had to find a space for it on my layout. I ended up adding it to the bottom right of my photo.

The way I figure it, there are two types of scrapbookers: those who have all the time in the world, and those who don’t. It’s not typically a life sentence. There will be periods when you can’t keep up with all the demands on your life. But there will also be times when you have leisure hours to fill.

THE 30-MINUTE LAYOUT For me, one of the easiest ways to save valuable time scrapbooking is to narrow down decisions about supplies. First, use a sketch with measurements. I used the one-page sketch I designed for this issue, and made only a few supplybased alterations. Second, use supplies from one collection (like You Are My Happy by Teresa Collins Designs, above).

Once you’ve selected papers and adhered them to the page, it’s just a matter of choosing a few matching embellishments and attaching them. It just doesn’t get any easier!

THE 3-HOUR LAYOUT Identical papers, identical photos, but a huge difference in time management! I made this layout more personal by using some items from the collection and adding my own touch to them. I added flowers, brads, twine, and a butterfly to a die-cut, and ended up with an embellishment I was thrilled with. On other items, I used glitter glue to add sparkle. If you have the time, it’s so much fun to “do it yourself.”

DEBBIE’S TIP #1 When I’m working with older photos of my daughters (these are circa 1978), the colors are often not the best. And sometimes a paper collection just grabs me and I want to use it, regardless of whether my photos match or not. In cases like that, I often reprint my photos in black and white.

DEBBIE’S TIP #2 The sketch doesn’t show any embellishments with the banner cluster at top, but when I had the papers I chose adhered, it seemed something was missing. Since there were splashes of bold black in other areas of the layout, a touch of black (via a few jewels) was just what I was looking for to tie the banners to the rest of the page.
DEBBIE’S TIP #3 Paper selection is important to me, and I immediately knew I wanted to use the diagonal word design paper for my background. However, by doing that, it narrowed my choices for paper in other areas. Since the background was so colorful and bold, the accent papers needed to be more white-based (and fairly small-pattterned) to get the look I wanted.

“It was through my mothers unexpected death. It was my therapy and I realized that I loved the meaning of documenting the story.”

Where do you get the inspiration for new collections and for new embellishment styles?
“I go to stores like Goodwill, antique malls, and regular stores and look for trends, colors and taking inspiration to create ‘new’ items that are different and help tell a story.”
What has been the most surprising thing about having your own company?
“That you are NEVER off. I get thousands of emails and find that I am never really able to shut my brain down.”
How do you make time for papercrafting yourself?
“I design projects with my family, my memories and have always wanted to do it for my family. I LOVE the design process.”
What have you learned about yourself because of starting your own business?

How does travel play into your creative process? “I travel the world (I was in five continents last year) to share how to create from the heart. I believe it is important to connect with consumers. Traveling has been a way for me to know the needs and wants in the craft world. You could find me at a mall in Spain, or a village in Africa, or the local Goodwill as I strive to find new inspiration.”
What is your identity as a designer? “I am a designer who wants to create a beautiful life. I am passionate about the creative process and inspiring others to do the same. I strive to be proactive in the crafting industry instead of reactive. It is my goal to always evolve and stretch my creativity in all that I do and design.”
What events do you take part in to promote papercrafting? “I have my own crafting events each year -Inspiration Unlimited in Henderson, Nevada and a yearly Teresa Collins cruise. I teach all over the world to share my love of creating.”
How does your blog help you reach others? “I blog regularly to share my passion and heart with others. I have the most loyal fans and I love them dearly. I am thankful for my blog and the opportunity it has given me to share worldwide with readers about my life, children and what inspires me. I get personal and want others to know I am just a mom who is lucky enough to have followed her creative dreams. I want to inspire others to do the same.”
What others ways do you promote crafting? “I do a weekly show for My Craft Channel and I make regular TV appearances on ABC4 Good Things Utah in hopes to inspire others to create with both style and meaning at an affordable price. I have also been on QVC, Ideal World, HSN, HGTV, and DIY television.”

I have partnerships with Fiskars, Craftwell, We R Memory Keepers, Xyron, and Photocentric and did cartridges for Provo Craft. I have big new things that will debut this May. My passion and enthusiasm for designing never stops. It is hard for me to sleep at night!”
Where do you see yourself and your company five years from now?
“I see the company only continuing to grow and my designs expanding into other creative arenas.”
What are your favorite aspects of the business? The least favorite?
“My favorite is designing and then teaching others how to take my designs and making beautiful memories. My least is probably the accounting.”
How has having your own company enhanced your life?
“I feel it a honor and blessing to be able to create the products that others use to design their life, memories and more. It really is such a honor that they would choose my designs.”
Would you do it all over again?
“In a heartbeat! I am so happy and over the moon thankful. I am still excited every single day as I work. It doesn’t feel like work to me… I feel like I am constantly just doing something I love.”

Stencils are hot! One walk down an aisle at the recent Craft and Hobby Association (CHA) trade show will confirm that if you didn’t know it already! More and more manufacturers are making stencils, and they have a versatility few other products can claim.

tammy tutterow technique tutorial You can find stencils that coordinate with your favorite stamps and patterned paper designs, as well as stencils that are on the latest fashion and design trends. But what do you do with all of those stencils? Sure you can ink and mist over them, but did you know you can also emboss with them? This month I will show you a really simple technique for embossing a stencil design onto foil and next month I will show you how to do embossing on paper using a die-cut machine.

Begin by laying a thin piece of foil (Ranger Foil Sheets shown) on a soft surface like a mouse pad or foam piercing mat. Use tape to hold the foil in place.

Position the stencil in place over the foil. Use tape to hold it in place. (Tip, if you use washi tape, you should be able to remove it and re-use it on a project later!)

Use a round tipped embossing stylus to trace around the design of the stencil. Hold the stylus like a pencil and trace just like you would with a pencil. You do not need to press hard, a light foil will impress easily on the foam surface. If there are areas in the design that you would like to exclude, simply don’t trace around them.

tammy tutterow technique tutorial After you have finished tracing, remove the tape. The embossed surface will now have the design of the stencil debossed on it. If your foil does not have adhesive on the back, you can flip the foil over and use that side as well.

To accent the design, scribble over the foil with an acrylic paint dabber (Ranger Adirondack Pitch Black shown). Allow the paint to sit for a few minutes.

Use a dry cloth or paper towel to buff the paint off of the foil before it is completely dry. The paint will remain in the debossed areas.

You can use alcohol ink based markers (Copics shown) to add color to the foil. Tap and dab the color onto the foil with the brush tip of the marker for the best results.

The finished piece can be used as an embellishment for a card, tag, or scrapbook page. It can be die cut to any shape and looks great as a photo mat. You can dress up the finished piece with added embellishments like brads and metal gears.

Mini-albums are great fun to embellish, but sometimes fInding one the right size and shape can be elusive. When that happens, I just create an album myself from sheets or pieces of chipboard, like the one I made recently to hold some special family photos.

Sometimes, you want to go all out. Make an embellishment for your layout that is every bit as special as the photos themselves. Making a splishy splashy umbrella isn’t difficult. All it takes is time, a handful of supplies, and a few simple steps.

SUPPLIES • cork or foam board • paper piercer • needle • embroidery floss • ruler • three 3-1/4" half circles • pencil • scissors • ink • 3/4" circle (for template) • chipboard "J" • Memory Thread (or craft wire) • adhesives (foam adhesive, tape runner, glue dots) • brad

DIRECTIONS 1. Start by finding the center and marking it with a pencil on one of the half circles. 2. Use the 3/4" circle to trace the half circles, starting in the center, for the bottom edge of the umbrella. Cut along the edge of the traced circles. 3. Use the first circle with the cut edge along the bottom as a template to trace the other two circles. 4. Cut two 3-4" pieces of Memory Thread. Twist them together.
7. On the patterned paper that is going to be the accent piece, draw lines from each point on the bottom up to the top center. Cut along the lines, discard the outer edge pieces and the middle piece. You will only be using the remaining two as accents. 8. Adhere the two accent pieces to the top of the remaining half circle piece. Trim to fit if needed. 9. After you've added the accent pieces, pierce a hole at the top center and add the brad.
5. Use glue dots to adhere the top side of the bottom umbrella piece. (It will be covered by the top piece when finished.)
10. Pierce holes with a paper piercer and use the needle and embroidery floss to stitch along the edges of the accent pieces. Don't go all the way to the bottom of the points because the paper will rip. Just get close, you won't notice it on the finished umbrella.
6. Cut the chipboard "J" to the size you want and ink. Adhere the "J" to the bottom of the twisted Memory Thread piece. Set aside the piece with the Memory Thread and "J".
11. Use foam adhesive to adhere the top piece of the umbrella to the bottom piece.

“Initially when I looked at the photo inspiration and the colors I thought this was going to be challenging. Then while I was going through my (vast) stash, I came across the BasicGrey Wander papers and it was a perfect fit. I love the current trend of triangles and cut a template with my Silhouette, then I cut some triangles in different sizes and from different papers. I filled in a few drawn ones and colored them with gelatos and then hand stitched around them. A few felties, brads and sequins and it turned out just lovely.�

c r e a t e TEAM SKETCH CHALLENGE ruth bonser says... “After playing with this sketch I settled on creating something with this wonderful photo of my niece hanging upside down. As it was a large photo I wanted it to have a page to itself and used just the right hand side of the sketch. This versatile sketch can easily be adapted to larger photos because of the way it uses the smaller photos in blocks. I changed the size of the paper blocks at the top to fit the photo I was using and cut apart some papers that were multiple patterns and designs on the one 12x12 sheet. This was a very inexpensive way to create. I added some Amy Tangerine transparent stickers to give a sense of depth and added some pop dots to give a little more interest to the paper clusters. While this is a simple layout, I really like the way the photo is the hero on the piece and I smile whenever I look at it.�

“I think scrapbooking a child’s birthday party is extremely difficult. Every child is in different colored clothing, small background faces everywhere with all different types of expressions. Finding colors that coordinate and picking pictures that aren’t too distracting can be a challenge. However, this month’s sketch made it easier with all the pictures being 5x4. You wouldn’t think one inch smaller would make much of a difference, but it really did. I changed it up a bit, bringing all the pictures to the same level. Giving space between pictures helped with all the ‘chaos.’ I loved this sketch!”

“I love two-page sketches, but I sometimes struggle with narrowing down my boatload of photos to just 6-10 that can reasonably fit on a layout. Although I originally toyed with creating a singlepage layout, I ended up adding more photos and sticking with the two-page design. I found the photo mat on the left side easily adaptable for additional photos just by altering the photo sizes to fit. I used Photoshop Elements to play around with different photo size combinations until I got approximately the same size as in the sketch (8x10). I like to have clear definition between my photos, either with a narrow margin between my photos or by inking the edges of my photos. In this case, I printed them with white margins and left them as is. No additional cutting necessary!�

“I used the tag sketch to create a layout. The minute I saw it, the little cluster of banners just begged to be super-sized and grouped with a photo. I LOVE the way the colours of the papers pick up on the colours of the kids’ pajamas in the photo and that helps their faces to really stand out, even though they are not looking at the camera. I used a Sharpie marker to messily outline the banners to help the shapes stand out from each other. The banners were actually all from one sheet of paper, which has several stripes of 12x2 pattern on it and I simply cut a banner from each pattern. I will definitely be using this modified sketch to layout again, it is such a simple and beautiful design.”

“As soon as I laid eyes on this card sketch I saw an 8.5 x 11 layout! I flipped the sketch to the opposite side, made the circle a scallop and a bit smaller because my picture was so small and not the best quality. I love creating 8.5 x 11 layouts. “I really had fun with the card sketch. I flipped the sketch horizontally and then played with circles. I cut a chipboard circle with my Silhouette and then added patterned paper circles in various sizes. I completed the look by stitching some circles over the patterned paper circles. Before I added the photo and embellishments I placed a Prima circles mask over the page and spritzed some Glimmer Mist over the entire page. I love the end result.�

amy wissbaum | conway, missouri Age: 39 Occupation: Registered nurse Approximately how much time do you spend papercrafting? Generally, I don’t get to spend much time on paper crafting. Some weeks I can spend an hour or two in the evening after the kids go to bed, other weeks I don’t have any time at all. I try to dedicate one Saturday or Sunday afternoon every other month to some sort of creative project. I definitely wish I had more time.

Describe your style. I am not sure I have a particular style, but I tend to stick to one -page layouts. I like to use lots of different patterned papers on each page and generally stick to one or two photos. I love embellishments – library clips, tags, buttons, brads, chipboard, flowers, glitter and almost anything “bling.” I have quite the “collection” of supplies.
Describe your scrap space. I have a great crafting space in my basement. I have two large tables and desk I leave set up all the time. I have plenty of room so I can leave out my photo printers, sewing machine, and commonly used supplies. I have completed projects displayed on the shelves and walls in “my space” and large shelf full of books with completed pages, mini albums and projects I have finished over the years.

Where do you get your inspiration? Most of my inspiration comes from sketches, blogs, and Pinterest. I also have some very creative friends. We love to get together and share ideas.
What part of the process do you enjoy most -- design or techniques. I think I enjoy the design process of paper crafting the most. I love shopping for new paper lines and embellishments. I have been known to fall in love with a paper line, purchase all the papers and embellishments, and then like them too much to use them. Sometimes I convince my family to let me photograph them in a specific color or style just so I will have specific “memories� to scrapbook.

I first started about eight years ago, just after my daughter was born. I began stamping and cardmaking with a friend while I was home on maternity leave. As my daughter got older, I transitioned to scrapbook layouts, mini albums and other “crafty projects� as a way to display a few of the many photos I was taking. I LOVE to take pictures!

amy wissbaum | conway, missouri Why is scrapbooking a special hobby? Scrapbooking allows me to capture special moments, holidays, sports events, birthdays, and everyday memories in a creative way. When I look back through my albums, pages and projects I can almost “feel “each memory. In a way, it is like going back in time. Sometimes I find a layout or project I forgot about or a photo I haven’t seen for a while. Other times I laugh out loud and even cringe a little when looking at my earlier projects. I find myself wondering what made me put a particular paper combination together. No matter what the page or project looks like though, I love each and every memory captured. Looking back through albums, pages and projects always makes me smile.
