melody the
of life
a letter from the editor
We live our lives -- at least I do -- at such a frantic pace. Sometimes it seems as if I can literally feel the minutes and hours and days whooshing past my head. Get this done. Get that done. Hurry up and check it off the list. Before I know it, I’m reaching up to turn off the lamp beside my bed, and another day is gone. Since I’m in my (gasp) 60s, I’m vividly aware that the seemingly bottomless container of days I once had now has an expiration date. I sometimes think of the saying “what I do today is important because I’m exchanging a day of my life for it.” Quite often, at the end of a busy day, I’m pretty sure that I’ve done very poorly in the trade department. A couple of weeks ago, I did something I had never done before. As part of a dedication service for our church’s new baby grand piano, in place of the usual Sunday-morning sermon I performed a 25-minute concert at the request of the pastor. I’ve been playing Sunday offertory solos for almost 40 years. But playing for an extended amount of time -- all eyes on me -- was a first. I chose seven songs, practiced for weeks, bought a new dress, told my family they had to attend or else, and just generally fretted about how it would all turn out. The day arrived. I was nervous. I get nervous every Sunday, so that was not a news flash or deal breaker. But throw in the fact that I had to do a bit of the dreaded public speaking between songs, and I was a bit on edge. But it went okay...the talking. And I was happy with my playing. I made it through six of the seven songs. Ready for the big finale. I explained a bit of the history of the piece I had saved for last. “The Holy City.” Then I tried to explain why I had chosen it: because I remembered my mother playing it when I was a child. That’s when the tears hit. I managed to blurt out that the last song was for her, took a
few deep breaths, and started in. “The Holy City” is a clash of loud and soft. It’s dramatic and emotional. I finished to a standing ovation. My grandsons brought me a beautiful bouquet (and hugs!). A good friend spoke about how much the church appreciated me and presented a huge arrangement of flowers. There were more flowers from my family. Then hugs from everyone and tears from many as they stopped to thank me. I had absolutely no idea that any of those things were going to take place. No idea. For the convergence of intensity and emotion and just pure bliss at feeling loved, appreciated, and understood, that moment stands with only a few precious others in my life. I don’t expect anything even remotely like it to happen again. That’s just the way life is. But there will be other moments. Small glimpses of something special. A dandelion held in a little boy’s grubby hand. A text from a good friend. An unexpected kindness from a stranger. My wish for you before we meet here again next month? That you have a special moment. Experience it. Then find the time to record it. With pictures. With words. After all, we are the keepers of memories. It’s what we do.

• Gift bag: Cut two sets of ice cream cone shapes from a die-cut machine. Cut thin strips of cardstock and adhere to the bottom of the cone in a criss cross pattern for a more realistic look. Use strips of cardstock to connect the two ice cream cone shapes to create the gift bag. Add glitter sprinkles and a die-cut cherry on top. • Card: Adhere a small photo frame to the card. Layer embellishments, enamel dots and sentiment to the frame. Complete with die-cuts and a small flower for a quick and easy card. • Treat box: Use a punch board or die-cut machine to cut out a treat box. sequins
Create a fun card with a zig-zag design by using a pencil and ruler to lightly draw the pattern across the front of the card. Next, adhere various sizes of sequins to the card, layering some of them for even more impact.
Project 1 - cardstock: American Crafts; sequins: Teresa Collins Designs; stamps: Simple Stories; marker: Copic; ink: Colorbox; pen: Uniball. Project 2 - patterned paper: Simple Stories; cardstock: American Crafts; sequins: Teresa Collins Designs; die-cuts, stickers: Simple Stories; spritzer, ink, markers: Ranger. Project 3 - cardstock: American Crafts; sequins: Teresa Collins Designs; sticker: American Crafts; stamp: Simple Stories; ink: Ranger, Colorbox.
2 3
Create a background design by lightly adhering sequins in a pattern across the card. Use mists or spritzer tools to spray ink onto the card. Remove sequins; outline the shapes or leave as is.
Liven up your sequins by stamping small designs on them. Be sure to use permanent inks.

Create a frame by placing a sequin in each of the four corners and then working toward the center on each side. Use a good glue that dries clear, like Fabric Fuse from ThermOWeb.
Project 4 - patterned paper: Imaginisce; cardstock: American Crafts; photo corners, adhesive: ThermOWeb; other: sequins. Project 5 - patterned paper: Heidi Swapp; canvas ampersand: Simple Stories; sequins: Lawn Fawn: adhesive: ThermOWeb. Project 6 - patterned paper: Imaginisce; cardstock: American Crafts; adhesive: ThermOWeb.

Embellish an embellishment! I used a Simple Stories ampersand and added some sequins to give it a little flair.
Fill a shape with sequins. Start with the outline of the shape and then work in any direction toward the center. This would also look great with flower petals.

Accent the design on a “Project Life type card. I used sequins paired with brads for the center of the flowers.
Project 7 - patterned paper: Echo Park Paper; sticker: Echo Park Paper; sequins: Doodlebug; brads: Doodlebug. Project 8 - patterned paper: We R Memory Keepers; cardstock: Bazzill; sequins: Doodlebug; sticker: Scenic Route; ink: Colorbox; embroidery floss: DMC. Project 9 - cardstock: American Crafts; sequins: Teresa Collins Designs; stickers: Pebbles; embroidery floss: DMC.
8 9
Use sequins for the “flame” on a birthday candle. I added stitching for both “wick” and to help hold the sequin on the card.
Trace around a simple shape (like this star) as a guide for creating a sequined shape. I stitched the sequins in place.

I used a larger photo (5x7) in place of the 4x6. Since I used a larger photo, I made the piece with the strips larger, too, and added more strips. It still has the same overall design; it's just slightly larger. I added a stitched border around the photo and strips piece.

change
I removed the background pieces. I typically use smaller amounts of patterned paper and liked the clean look without the background pieces. With all the small strips it can be overwhelming to have patterned papers behind that too. Especially since I used a collection that had only three colors.

I used a much smaller star than the one shown on the sketch. I still used the star as my title piece though. On the sketch, the journaling is on the right page so I had to find an area for it on my layout. I thought if I used a smaller star and a smaller title, that would leave room for some journaling. Plus, I liked having the patterns and colors showing more with the smaller star, especially since I removed the background pieces.

I flipped both sides of the sketch. On the right page, the photo I wanted to use was horizontal, so flipping the sketch started with that. It worked out perfectly that in the pictures there is a fence background. I always love pulling ideas from the pictures and trying to find ways to incorporate them into the design of my layout. I thought it would be fun to play off of the vertical arrangement of the wooden fence and use that within the design of the strips. I used a Sizzix Big Shot and an embossing folder to create wooden planks in place of the patterned paper strips on the sketch.
2
change
On the left page I used larger photos. I didn't have as many photos as the sketch has, plus, sometimes it's just easier to go with the standard 4x6 size.

I added a lot more background strips. On the right page I still somewhat followed the design of the background strips. I just added more. On the left page since my photo block covers the page from top to bottom, I decided to add some extra strips on both sides of the photos.

Because I flipped the sketch and have photos from the top of the sketch to the bottom, I left myself without a journaling spot. I used a tag as the background for my journaling strips to the left of the photos. I also added an extra picture I had to the tag.

I had an extra photo that I wanted to include so I stretched the design on the right page to accommodate it. The only adjustment I had to make to the design was to stretch the strips as well, from the top of the layout to the bottom.

change
I used swirls and splashes in place of the star. Because of the small details in the design of those I didn't want to cover them up with my title. There is some empty space in the photos so I took advantage of that and placed my title there.

On the left page of the layout I moved the journaling block and grouped it with the photo block. Since I stretched the design on the right page to the top and bottom of the layout, having another piece that stretched taller than the background would create some trapped space. I used two 3x6 photos in place of the 4x6 photo. Since this layout was about both of my boys and their grandma, I wanted to have a larger, focal photo of both of them. It is only 2" larger than the 4x6 photo so the only adjustment was to move them closer to the left page to allow room for the title and hearts.
4
change
Because I used such a large photo block, the journaling area was taken over with pictures. An easy fix was to include a 2-1/2" journaling square within the block of photos.
5

I didn't include the small 2x2 photos. Since I added the extra photo and used such large hearts, I didn't have a lot of room left. It wasn't a big deal since I used so many pictures on the left page.

time
it’s about
by debbie sanders
The way I figure it, there are two types of scrapbookers: those who have all the time in the world, and those who don’t. It’s not typically a life sentence. There will be periods when you can’t keep up with all the demands on your life. But there will also be times when you have leisure hours to fill.
................
................
THE 45-MINUTE LAYOUT For me, one of the easiest ways to save valuable time scrapbooking is to narrow down decisions about supplies. First, use a sketch with measurements. I used the one-page sketch I designed for this issue. Second, use papers and embellishments primarily from one collection (like Americana by Pebbles, above).
46 CREATE
Once you’ve selected papers and adhered them to the page, it’s just a matter of choosing a few matching embellishments and attaching them. It just doesn’t get any easier!
..................
THE 3-HOUR LAYOUT Identical papers, identical photos, but a huge difference in time management! I personalized this layout by hand-stitching. I also made my own “circle star” accents by starting with a Sizzix Big Shot Machine. Since you can see where you are cutting with the Thinlits dies, I was able to die-cut a star, then die-cut a circle around the negative space. Later, I filled this space with diagonal strips of floss. If you have the time, it’s so much fun to “do it yourself.”

DEBBIE’S TIP #1 I rarely use mats around photos. However, with the bold nature of these striped strips, I thought having a bit of a neutral barrier between them and my photos would be a good idea.
DEBBIE’S TIP #2 After I cut the 20 strips of paper called for in the sketch, I started building around the three dominant red and white striped strips. I wanted to mainly alternate red and blue, but I also paid special attention to the strips I planned to stitch on. Some of the papers had busier patterns, and I wanted the stitching to be on plainer papers so it would stand out.

LONG TITLE
DEBBIE’S TIP #3 For the “circle star” embellishments, I used a Sizzix Big Shot machine. It was easy to first die-cut stars, then cut precision circles around the negative space from the star. I die-cut a second set of matching circles, matched them up together, then used the negative space circle to trace the star shape on the circle below. Next, I applied a dot adhesive over the traced star shape and applied small strips of red, white, and blue embroidery floss over the adhesive. After that step was done, I made a “sandwich” out of the two circle layers, with the floss showing through the star shape.

Ellison, the parent company, is a third generation, familyowned, woman-led business that has grown from a small startup company in LaDorna and Bob Eichenberg’s two-bedroom apartment into an international corporation headquartered in Orange County, California.

“
I tend to use sketches as a starting point, to see what inspires me about them and what light bulbs they set off. In this case, the horizontal strips got me thinking about hard right angles. A minute later, ‘Wouldn't it be lovely to have little blocked mini-compositions, the colors of which softly echo those found in the photos?’ I usually go for softness and more organic rounded shapes in my projects. So this was a nice challenge to go with the hard edges, but still remain true to my softer, organic style.”
VIVIAN KEH “There is a lot of misting in this layout. When I studied watercolor years ago, I learned an easy technique that works with varying degrees of success with colored mists. Sprinkle salt over the just misted, wet surface, and wait for interesting patterns to reveal themselves. The style lines of pure white die-cuts draw the eye in for a better look at the dreamy blend of misted hues.” VIVIAN’S BLOG www.contadinak.com

Because of the photos, I used nature-themed colors, textures and dies. To make the watercolor strip in the middle, the Garden Greens die was used to make a stencil from plastic packaging. Embossing paste was smeared through the stencil with a palette knife. When dry, it was watercolored with distress inks and later stamped. The two thinner strips are made up by Honeycomb Frameworks die cuts at the top, and Twigs On the Edge die-cut from kraft-core cardstock at the bottom. I also made a window with the Window and Window Box die, distress paint, and used mica for the windows. The kraft-core background was sanded, stamped with a grid stamp and splattered with paint.

There’s no better subject for a mini-album than fun with friends. And when those friends are scrapbooking friends, well, can it get any better than that? Why not make a mini about your favorite hobby, and the people who share that passion with you.
a blank album becomes a work of art with the right touches ................

A sturdy chipboard album -- like this one from Maya Road -- is a great place to start when making a mini. • Decorate the front cover using die-cut embellishments, stickers and patterned papers • Cover the chipboard pages and inside covers with patterned papers • Adhere photos, journaling blocks and die-cuts to the pages • Embellish pages with small stickers, flowers, strips of paper and enamel dots • Ink all of the pages and use a white pen to add small details

page kits 101
process by janet, aka cherry picker
Hello, scrappy friends! Welcome to a three-part series on the making and using of scrapbook page kits. After scrapbooking for 17 years, I am always looking for ways to increase the productivity -- and enjoyment -- of my scrap process.
A tutorial that will save you time and ramp up your productivity! ................
page kits SINGLE LAYOUT
A few years ago I found that having pre-made page kits became a huge timesaver and a great way to shop from my own stash (or inventory as I like to title it). There are many ways to approach building page kits. This month we are going to dive into making a page kit for a single or double page spread.
Please note that this is just my process and is by no means the “only” way. This is simply the process that allows me to scrap faster with all needed supplies at my fingertips. No more looking and digging for supplies when I want creative time to play! A bonus with making page kits is that if there are “leftovers,” you can use those to whip out some cards or perhaps another layout as well.
JANET (message board name: CHERRYPICKER)
I do follow the same steps every time I make a page kit. It helps make the kitting go faster. For single layout kits (meaning a one-two page spread), I try to only spend 15-20 minutes kitting. If you are new to the page kitting process, realize that the more you make, the faster the kitting process goes. In the beginning if it takes longer, that is completely okay. It will go faster as you progress. So let’s get started!
116 CREATE
step no.1 SELECT PHOTOS.
Ninety percent of the time when I print my photos, I print a couple of great focal shots in 4x6, the rest in wallets.
step no.2
SELECT A SKETCH... or inspiration piece. I use Scrapbook
Generation’s sketches a lot when creating
page kits. They are just SO easy to follow and use in the creative process.
step no.3 SELECT PAPER...
and cardstock. My photos always dictate
my paper choices. I pick the main color
based on the photos, then pick another two or three supporting colors. In this page kit
my colors are yellow, navy, green and gray.
step no.4 SELECT TOOLS.
I look at my tools and pick a couple. They
could be something new in my stash or an
older tool I challenge myself to use. Also, I may choose something to go with the theme or feel of my layout.
step no.5 SELECT ALPHAS.
I always select way more than I will use. I
pick alphas in all my color choices and also a variety of sizes. This helps to prevent having to go through my stash when creating. I go with what I have!
step no.6 SELECT WASHI...
ribbon, and twine. Lately I seem to use washi on every layout, so I make sure to choose some. On this layout I selected twine to add texture, and as a challenge to myself. I won’t use all of these, but when scrapping, I have to choose from what I pre-selected. That is the timesaver factor.
step no.7
SELECT EMBELLISHMENTS.
The FUN stuff! I always seem to pull out enamel dots and my much-loved word/label stickers. This could be anything brand new you are itching to use, or any item you want to challenge yourself to use. Also, this is a good time to pull items that may coordinate with your theme/color scheme. The goal is to have options, not to use it all!
step no.8
SELECT GO-TO ITEMS.
There are just some embellishments we seem to use on every layout. For me, it’s brads. Oh, how do I love brads...LOL! If I don’t have a particular brad pack I want to use, I will just pull out my brad container and wood veneer container when I sit to scrap. No need to include any in the kit bag, unless you are kitting for a crop.
step no.9 WRITE IT DOWN.
There are some items you can’t place in the page kit, such as tools, punches, ink pads, etc. So I make a note of what I plan to use, and place my note in the kit bag. Those items go back into my stash until I use this kit. In this page kit, I made a note of my punch and die choices, my sketch choice, and some specific wood veneers.
step no.10 BAG IT UP.
My bags are about 13x15-inches in size. Any extra-large or gallon size bags will work perfectly.
step no.11 ENJOY!
The next time you want to be creative, just pull out your pre-made page kit and have fun. No need to look for photos, inspiration, or supplies. No more wasted time, because you have everything you need right at your fingertips, and all in one happy bag. Well, except for some chocolate!

“I was so excited when I saw this sketch -- the possibilities are endless! I was really drawn to the left side, so I decided to just go with it. I may have omitted the pinwheels from this page, but I kept the strips AND the fun. Not only did I use plenty of elements to keep your eye looking from thing to thing, I brought back foam stamps and acrylic paints on pages!

“Often, I only use one half (of a two-page sketch), but when I have a number of photos and love them all, then double-page sketches are a blessing. These photos I only took a few days before. That cheeky grin on my son’s face just needed to be scrapbooked as soon as humanly possible! Duplo, which had been relegated as a baby toy at our house, made a comeback as the kids realised they could build things that were much bigger much faster. The first and most loved creation was this jackhammer. Because it is winter here and this was a layout about my son, I replaced the flowers with these awesome Crate Paper frames, and then used the frames to house embellishments, journaling, patterned paper, titles and even other frames. Don't let your products limit you, you can use them however they will suit your layout. They didn’t really work over my photos, so they were a home for everything and anything else!”

“I started by flipping the sketch horizontally. Initially, I felt like it needed more photos. I thought about adding them to the title side because, honestly, that big open space scared me. I ended up just adding one additional 3x3 photo. A vision of fireworks came to me when I found these photos. They became the perfect replacement for the pinwheels and flowers in the sketch! To tone down the bright white on the right side (and help me with that ‘open space’ feeling), I misted the background first. I wanted to create a sheer vellum border to place beneath the border strip. This was easy enough (got out my super old chalks), but when I placed it on top of the gingham print, it became invisible. Solution: move the entire border strip below the patterned paper/photo block!”

“I was inspired by the long stripes to scrapbook a larger photo and leave only a narrow space for embellishment and journaling. The left side of the page is the sketch and the rest is basically the photo with the title over the top of it. I really loved the colours of the new We Are Memory Keepers Inked Rose collection and its delicate details. I used pieces of the paper as embellishments by fussy-cutting. I absolutely love paper die-cuts, and making your own means you get exactly what you need! Like every scrapbooker at the moment (or so it seems to me!) I am crazy for gold, so I added the gold doily vellum to frame my journaling and gold sequins to lift the brown of autumn into magical gold, the feeling of this light-hearted adventure. My daughter and I caught the train to Nana's house instead of driving there, which we usually do. The most everyday things are a magical adventure when you embrace the opportunity for fun with your kids. Snapping a few photos on my phone let me keep that joy for longer. It is a lot of spring colours for an autumn/winter adventure, but really we never have much time without sunshine in Sydney, and the happy colours make me happy when I am crafting!
scrapbook layout “This tag sketch was easy for me to turn into a layout. I left off some of the stripes, just so I would have room for a title. This is a fairly basic layout for me, because of the papers being busy.
