Life isn’t fair. Years ago, I often flung that nugget of wisdom at my high school journalism students when whining was rampant about editing changes or deadlines or the real clincher...who got to go interview the coach. It’s not that the interview was that much of a thrill. It was that going to the gym always offered the potential for “getting lost” on the way back to newspaper and yearbook class. Lost, that is, until about 10 seconds before the end-of-class bell rang. A coveted assignment, for sure. I had some measure of control over the “fairness” of my students’ lives in the classroom. That’s part of the being-a-teacher territory. If you are a good one, the fairness factor evens itself out over time, and everyone, even the kid who never met a missed deadline he didn’t like, gets to go interview the coach -and get lost on the way back -- at least once. It’s been a long time since I’ve been in the classroom. But you know what? Life still isn’t fair. The older I get, the more world news I watch, the more life experiences I collect, the more I know that to be true. For example, I want you to meet Amy Cunniff. That’s her beautiful, happy family in the photo here. Amy has been a regular in the readers gallery section of CREATE. This month, one of the layouts she submitted was of a national memorial ceremony for fallen police officers. When I emailed her and asked to use the layout for this issue, she thanked me and mentioned it was a “very special layout” to her. Curiosity led me to ask if the woman in the photos was her. It was. Her husband David, a New York State Trooper, was killed in the line of duty in December, 2013, just days before Christmas. I offered my condolences. And got this response from Amy. “Scrapbooking has been therapeutic as I continue to document all the moments of our
lives -- the good, bad and ugly,” she said. “I went through a couple of months where I couldn’t look at any pictures, but now I can’t scrapbook enough. I want to make sure my boys know the tremendous outpouring of love and support we had.” We’ve known all along that some people scrapbook for art’s sake. Others to record memories. Adding this third category -scrapbooking to heal -- elevates this craft above every other hobby I can think of. I find it comforting to know that Amy, and others like her, cope in some small way with the cruelty of life’s unfairness by arranging strips of paper and heartfelt words beside precious photos. Preserving memories of that person whose loss leaves a void that will never quite be filled. We can’t make life fair. But we can remember happier times. Scrapbooking makes that possible in ways no other activity can. I’m pretty sure it’s the Superhero of hobbies.

• Gift bag: Die cut a pumpkin shape from cardstock and adhere on plain gift bag. Decorate with die-cut leaves, feathers, and flowers. Add stitched details to stem and add a small twine bow. • Card: Punch or cut small branches and leaves from brown patterned paper and adhere onto card front in a circle to create a wreath. Decorate with small leaf die-cuts and a sentiment. Complete the wreath by adhering small enamel dots. • Pillow box: Make cute party favor boxes by using a die-cut machine, punch board or buying plain ones to alter. Decorate by wrapping twine around the box and adhere die-cut labels and leaves. Finish it with a small chipboard sticker.

Liven up plain white ribbon by using a stencil to add a small pattern such as polka dots. Just lightly dab a contrasting color of stamping ink through the stencil using a foam applicator.

Add sparkle to stencil projects by filling in the stencil shape with adhesive, then sprinkling with glitter.
Create a unique background that will add dimension and bright colors by dabbing embossing ink through the stencil. Then sprinkle on the embossing powder and heat set. Next, dab and blend inks across the paper.

Emboss with a stencil by masking areas you don’t want to emboss with paper or washi tape. Press embossing ink pad over areas to emboss. Remove stencil and heat emboss.
Use watercolors to color in the stencil areas instead of mist.

Add a unique and interesting look to a stencil shape by filling in some areas with a stamped image. I used a camera stencil and filled in the top and bottom areas with a floral stamp.
Add sparkle to a project by using glitter with a stencil. Use a paint brush with glue and brush over the stencil. Pull the stencil off; cover with glitter.

I used the left side of the two-page sketch to create a one-page layout. Instead of using the squares for a background, I substituted a solid piece of patterned paper for that background. I thought the circles on the patterned paper had a similar feel as the squares. It may not be the exact design, but it still follows the same concept, a repeating shape for the background.

I used only one photo in place of the three 2-1/2 x 3-1/2 photos on the sketch. I had just one photo that I wanted to use for this layout so I had to find a way to make it work. I loved the photo frame from Heidi Swapp so I decided to use both in the same general design of the sketch and use one for a photo and the other for my title.

I moved my journaling strips above the photo frames. I liked the look - since I used less photos -- of having the photo, the title, and the journaling all clustered together. It kept all the important elements grouped together instead of stretched out across the page. I changed up the embellishments a lot. Since the circles are smaller, I thought it might be fun to add small details to them. I used a combination of butterflies, circle stickers, hearts, and stitching to add a unique detail to the background.

A super easy way to include more photos with this sketch is to simply repeat the design in another row of both pictures and background squares. I moved the current design down to the bottom, eliminating the striped strip, and then added another row of the background squares and 4x4 photos along the top for a grid that fills the entire page.

I liked the idea of having a decorative element in the middle square of the photos on the right page. I added a square of patterned paper in place of one of the photos and then added my journaling and a few accent stickers to it.

Since I had a much larger background on the left page, I decided to use larger photos. I used two 4x6 photos and because I no longer needed the space for my journaling, I centered the photos, title, and embellishments.

The patterned paper that I wanted to use with my pictures had so many fun patterns and colors that I wanted to find a way to use more of them. A simple way to accomplish that was to use smaller squares (3x3) for the background which gave me the opportunity to use more squares.

For the right page, I used 3x3 photos to match the 3x3 squares on the left page. I also added in a few squares of patterned paper both for photo mats and for a background for a few embellishments. I also included a larger 6x3 photo in place of two 3x3 photos.

On the left page I used two different sizes of photos. I have two larger 3x4 photos and then one 2-1/2 x 3-1/2 photo. Since the 3x3 squares ended up making the background larger by one inch, I thought that would be a good chance to use a few slightly larger photos.

I used a single piece of patterned paper for the background in place of the squares. I love the "Life is a Daring Adventure" piece of patterned paper and thought it would make the perfect background for my pictures! I kept the same 8inch height as the background on the sketch.

I love it when I find a chance to include a really large photo. In this case I used an 8x8 photo in place of four of the 4x4 photos on the sketch. This is always a fun way to really bring attention to a favorite photo.

I let the "Life is a Daring Adventure" act as my title. It may be in a different location than it is on the sketch but I was able to actually keep the photos in the same general area as they are on the sketch so I didn't need to make any changes to anything else.

Because my background piece is neutral in color, I wanted to find a way to add color to the layout. I did that by adding a few strips to the bottom of the page in place of the striped strip on the sketch.

I ended up flipping the direction of the sketch. If I had kept the sketch as it is, my son, Drew, would have been facing/looking off the page. I always like to keep the subjects in the pictures facing inwards, towards the center of the layout. It is just one of those little things that keeps a layout appealing and flowing.

I had fewer photos that I wanted to use and the photos didn't lend themselves to being cropped down to a square size very well. I used three 4x6 photos in place of the six 4x4 photos. I also added a one-halfinch striped strip to the top of the photos.

I wanted a background that matched height-wise to the photos and striped strip on the left. I decided to use three 4x6 strips in place of the squares. I added a one-half-inch striped strip to the bottom to match the design on the left page.

I added a stitched line across the top, accented with wooden hearts. Because there was so much open space after cutting two inches off the height of the photo page and background, I wanted a decorative element to help add some detail to the page.

I took the banner on the squares on the sketch and moved it up to the top right corner of the page. This helped to keep the white space from being too overwhelming.

The way I figure it, there are two types of scrapbookers: those who have all the time in the world, and those who don’t. It’s not typically a life sentence. There will be periods when you can’t keep up with all the demands on your life. But there will also be times when you have leisure hours to fill.

THE 45-MINUTE LAYOUT For me, one of the easiest ways to save valuable time scrapbooking is to narrow down decisions about supplies. First, use a sketch with measurements. I used the one-page sketch I designed for this issue. Second, use papers and embellishments primarily from one collection (like Hello Today by Heidi Swapp, above).

Once you’ve selected papers and adhered them to the page, it’s just a matter of choosing a few matching embellishments and attaching them. It just doesn’t get any easier!

DEBBIE’S TIP #1 A tried and true way to bring a cohesive feeling to any layout is to use a visual triangle. This can be done by color or by shape. I formed one with the top yellow strip of paper, and the two large yellow circles.
DEBBIE’S TIP #2 The Hello Today collection by Heidi Swapp is filled with beautiful papers. It was hard to narrow my choices down, but I selected fairly small or tone on tone papers for the top and bottom strips, where most of the layering of embellishments was going to be. I used the more “busy” patterned paper for the middle strip, where it had less competition with embellishments.

DEBBIE’S TIP #3 For the large heart embellishment, I started with a raw chipboard shape, and first covered it with white ink. After the ink dried, I covered the heart with liquid glue and immediately sprinkled it with pink mini-beads. I shook some off, because I wanted some of the white to show through. Since I didn’t want to be chasing loose beads later, and because I wanted the embellishment to have a finished look, I covered the entire top of the heart with a thick coat of Diamond Glaze. When it dried, the beads were embedded in the glaze...just the look I was going for.

How did you get started in scrapbooking as a career?
“I have always been a scrapbooker, but I started working in the scrapbook industry in 1999. I started by teaching at my LSS (local scrapbook store). I won a spot in the Creating Keepsakes Hall of Fame in 2000 and began writing articles for CK as well. I contributed to several different magazines and helped in various capacities to create and publish lots of books about scrapbooking and papercrafting. Designing with Texture still is my favorite!”
Where do your ideas for new products and techniques come from?
“I have always loved to try new things on my scrapbook pages and memory projects. Some call it being ‘creative;’ I call it getting bored easily! This precious page was from one of my ‘technique/exploration’ albums where I would just play and try new things. This is where all my ideas for new products and techniques come from -- spending the time to just play is a critical part of my creative process. In 2003, I was playing with an idea for masks and spray paint! I remember loving this open typeface for rub-ons, and that huge plastic tab I placed on the left edge of the photo.”

How has the sharing of papercrafting ideas changed since you joined the industry?
“My first passion is sharing ideas! Over the 15 years that I have been in the scrapbooking industry, I have always loved to teach, inspire and share. Early in my career, the only way to really get the ideas out there was to teach in scrapbook stores, or at scrapbooking events, or publish print magazines and idea books. All of these require so much time, effort and expense, but I still did it (and loved it)! As time went on, I learned to share through my website and blog, and even live webshows! But nothing has been as powerful and interactive as social media. Being able to share ideas via Facebook, Instagram and Twitter has been an absolute thrill! I love filming weekly crafty shows and making it easy for scrapbookers all over the world to see it for free. Digital instruction downloads and idea books, education videos and tutorials have helped me to instruct and inspire like I never dreamed would be possible. And I pretty much love that!”
What happened to allow the Heidi Swapp brand to come out of retirement?
“In 2009, I had pretty much retired the Heidi Swapp brand, until 2011 when Rebecca Cross convinced me to partner up with her at Pink Paislee and re-brand Heidi Swapp. I honestly couldn’t think of a better person to work with! Rebecca has tremendous strengths where I have weaknesses and she has dedicated so much of her energy and her talents to building the Heidi Swapp brand. She and her husband, Barry Cross owned and operated Pink Paislee until November, 2013 when they merged with American Crafts and moved to Utah. Now we all live close by and have had so many opportunities for growth. I am deeply thankful for the Cross’ talents, their standard of excellence and staggering work ethic. We make a great team!”

“To keep up with all the exciting opportunities that have come since becoming part of the American Crafts family, we have added so much talent and resources to our team. This fabulous group of people represent just a few of the talented individuals that I get to work with on a daily basis. This group is mostly designers…but there are also so many dedicated and hard-working customer service, sales reps, sourcing, photography and management staff that make sure nothing falls through the cracks. We are always trying to improve and refine our process…there is no way I could possibly thank them enough for what they all contribute to the success of the Heidi Swapp brand, and just overall putting up with me! ”

How does your family fit into the world of scrapbooking you have created with the Heidi Swapp brand?
“This is my ‘Party of Seven!’ It really is all about these people! First of all…they are my ‘cast of characters.’ The scrapbooks are their stories. They are the inspiration behind my projects and my collections. They are the reason I do what I do. They are on my team. They encourage me, and support me, but what’s most valuable is that they believe in me! Eric and I will celebrate 20 years of marriage this December, and you know, he totally gets it. He not only recognizes my crazy passion and the fulfillment that I get from doing what I do, but he understands that it matters! My children truly value their scrapbooks and love revisiting their memories. That is why they smile when the camera comes out, and they participate in my nutty ideas. It matters to them. I love them all so fiercely, and scrapbooking is one of the ways that I can express my love for them, that is a little longer term than Sunday dinner or clean laundry!”

blast from the past Heidi Swapp shares some of the early layouts she made of her children... “I thought it would be fun to share a few older scrapbook pages -- one featuring each of my children, along with a photo of them now. I truly feel that looking through scrapbook pages is like climbing in a time machine. I always feel a rush of memories and emotions. While our lives have been filled with our share of trials and difficulties, I like to focus on the good times in my albums -- as I look back over the years, my heart is literally flooded with gratitude. I am thankful for the good times and the tough times. I marvel at the growth of my children, as well as my own personal growth, and I am so thankful for the reminders and memories that are preserved there.”

A lot has changed in almost 17 years! I was so excited for Colton’s first birthday, and I wanted it to be perfect. You can maybe see that I created a custom stamped table covering (I cut different shapes of sponges that would piece together with different shapes and colors of paint to create a train). I tried to really decorate his cake. I admit, I was pretty proud! He just loved Teletubbies and trains! I never would have remembered who gave Colton what!
I just love this page! My cutest little girl. Plus I loved to play with spray paint and masks. I had bought this super cool “day lab” -- I still have it, but I can’t remember how it works! I was using paint with my rubber stamps. I really do love to scrapbook!
I always love reading my journaling, and that is why I am always urging people to write when they are in the process of scrapbooking! Down the road, the more you note, the more you will remember, and enjoy. I love these pictures of Colton, and this stuff continues to make him so happy.
In my journaling I mention how hard it is for me to really capture Cory’s “jumping height.” Another thing that seems to get better all the time is photography. Even the cameras on our phones are advanced enough to get great pics!
Capri is such a daddy’s girl, and this page illustrates the special bond they have so well. When I look back, I realize some things never change...like a daddy’s love. These pics make me smile. I created this layout with my first style of resist papers called “invisibles.” I loved playing with them.
These photos of Connor when he was ten days old just totally melt me -- and he loves this page. It’s his very favorite! When I look at these photos I can totally remember what it was like to hold him as a baby. They just grow up too fast!

Welcome back to part three...the final tutorial in this series on making and using page kits. This issue, we are going to utilize skills from previous months (making kits for single layouts and for batch layouts) to create assembly-line layout kits.
A tutorial that will save you time and ramp up your productivity! ................
page kits ASSEMBLY LINE
Creating page kits in an assembly-line fashion is not only easy and fun, but also one of the best ways to be productive and use your supplies. During the assembly-line method, you are thinking in terms of supply categories, and therefor saving huge chunks of your creative time when it comes to selecting supplies and product while scrapbooking. In the following tutorial, I demonstrate how I created four layout kits using the assemblyline method in just a tad over one hour. Again, what a huge timesaver! This method can be used to create as many kits as you wish, according to your personal space and style of scrapbooking. Your dining room table, spare room, or scrap space floor will be mighty handy doing this assembly-line process. Trust me on this...the more space you have to work, the better.

Like I’ve mentioned in the two other parts of this series, this is just my approach. The idea is to take this process and make it fit your personal scrap style and process.
So find some empty space, grab those muchloved supplies, and let’s get started!
step no.1 SELECT PHOTOS.
True to my scrap style, my photos are printed in 4x6 and wallet format. For any page kit process, I always start with photos. This round I am going to make four page kits using the assembly-line method. You can do as many page kits as your space allows. Group photos into piles.
step no.2 SELECT PAPERS...
patterned paper, specialty paper, and cardstock. Now the assembly-line process! With your photos near, select papers for all the photo groupings at once. You already have paper out, so why not pull choices all at once for each photo grouping. This prevents backtracking and loss of time...time you could actually be scrapping!
step no.3 SELECT A SKETCH...
TIP: Number the pages in your sketch books for easy reference when making page kits and when scrapping.
or inspiration. With my Scrapbook Generation sketch books in hand, I select sketches for each photo grouping and make notes. Since these books will go back to my stash after kitting, I make note of the page number of the sketch I have chosen.
step no.4 TOOL TIME.
Make a couple of choices and consider it done. There is always time to change your mind when you create.
Now is the time to decide on punches, stamps, dies, and other tool-related products. By selecting these at the same time, you save time! I then place the selected tools on my page kit pile and move towards the next step. Don’t agonize over each punch or stamp set you may have in your stash.
step no.5
New products you are itching to use? This is the time to pull them out and place on a pile. And this is the time to get that older product used, too.
EMBELLISHMENTS.
This step is always my favorite. I simply grab my stash of embellishments: enamel dots, brads, washi, labelwork stickers, mini alphas, etc. and go to my groupings. Making quick decisions, I pull product form these categories and place in my piles. Select from one product category at a time. It does not get any easier than this.
step no.6 COLOR TIME.
Remember, you are doing different layouts, so pull a variety of elements.
Select some color for your layouts. Dig into that stash of ribbon, flowers, and twine. Explore some ink colors and markers. Find that box of die-cuts. Look at your stash and select items that reflect your personal scrap style. And don’t forget your go-to embellishments, digital files, and alphas.
step no.7 FINISHED KITS.
Don’t worry if you think you have too much product, because you can always use leftovers to create another layout -just add more photos when done.
Look at your kit piles. Look at your choices. Do you have enough materials to work from just this kit? Make note of any tools/stamps/inks and other supplies that need to be replaced back into your stash. Place notes with each kit.
step no.8 BAG IT.
Time to contain all your supplies and notes in a bag for future enjoyment. When your next scrap session happens, just grab a kit, refer to your notes, and get busy creating. You will have all you need already selected, pulled and packaged. Now that is scrap-happiness!

“This card sketch instantly made me think of a piece of framed art. I've been wanting to make something for my teenage son and this gave me the perfect starting point. I changed very little from the sketch other than measurements. Cutting that first mat after the base was the hardest part. From there I ‘eyeballed’ it to my liking. One thing I needed to keep in mind was that the frame itself took away about one-fourth inch of the perimeter. “One of my favourite ways to translate a tag sketch to a layout is to recreate the shape of the tag inside the layout and then embellish more around it. Here I incorporated the photo into the ‘tag’ aspect, however it would have worked just as well to make the title or journaling occupy that space and put the photo elsewhere.”
