For high-sensation seekers with the wind in their hair and the sea in their blood, kitesurfing is one of the ultimate thrills—and spills! There is no shortage of kitesurf resorts and schools in Sri Lanka. Anywhere with a beach and a breeze will do. But some are better than others, and one notable standout is Adam’s Bridge Kitesurf, run strictly by enthusiasts for enthusiasts on the north-western tip of the island. Located at Talaimannar on Mannar Island by Adams Bridge, a chain of islands connecting Sri Lanka to India, the resort is about as far off the beaten tourist track as it’s possible to get. Marc Pele, a German who has been here for 15 years, started with a beachside hotel in Negombo, the west-coast’s premier tourist resort. After a couple of seasons running a kitesurf centre at the hotel, Marc took the plunge on this wild stretch of coastline in the middle of northern nowhere. He says: “The water is just waist deep up to a kilometer offshore, with a sandy bottom and waves, choppy or flat 2
water, perfect conditions for beginners, intermediate and advanced riders alike to enjoy the south side of Adam’s Bridge with waves as well.” The resort is open from June 1 to September 30, during which time the wind speeds are between 20–30 knots for most of the day and night. Truly wind in the hair stuff! Instruction is provided by International Kiteboarding Organisation (IKO) certified instructors who speak English, French and German. Accommodation includes eco-wooden cabanas or custom-made tents, all surrounded by amazing nature and wildlife. Prices include accommodation, three meals a day plus drinking water, shared showers and toilets, and free wifi.
