EDITOR’S NOTE Recently. as I went through my day I started listening to motivational content, something to take my mind off money (or lack of it) and I stumbled across a saying that has totally revolutionised the way I think. The saying was by developmental guru Tony Robbins says “L I F E W I L L PAY A N Y P R I C E Y O U A S K O F I T ”. I decided to put the saying to use and emailed one of my favourite fashion bloggers Ada to see if she’d be interested in a cover interview. I was totally shocked that she replied within hours and was so willing to send images and whatever we needed to make the cover a reality. I started thinking to myself if life can give us whatever we ask/demand of of it, what are some of the things we haven’t been asking life to pay, that we’ve been scared of and haven’t even bothered to try? Why don’t you try it, like I did with Ada, you never know you just could be sending us your inspiring story next. As we see with the young people of South Africa, people who are definitely paying the price to change their destiny with actions like “Fees must fall” protests, followed up with multiple protests against President Jacob Zuma and demanding he step down... after he pays back the money. Someone else who knows a lot about paying the price to live the life many now dream of is Strive Masiyiwa, he continues to strive (don’t excuse the pun) to make us proud by launching Kwese TV and signing some amazing deals with sports giants like the NBA to broadcast matches to us here in Africa. Also in this issue are some awesome African directed and produced movies, a few good reads that are bound to have you glued to your book and new tech news that might be changing that (if you’re a Netflix type of person) . Our fashion section steps it up with the recent SA Fashion Week ‘must have’ designs and we take a cue from our cover star with this editions ‘SHANA Shoppin’ guide. We also look into the future of African education and whether mobile is a means to an end for the long depressed state of African education. M A K E S U R E Y O U M A K E I T A L L T H E WAY TO THE END for tips on how flowers can add that ‘je nais se quoi’ to any room in your home. Well here’s to another edition and to making life pay the price you deserve to live beautifully. LOVE NICOLLE 4

Founder and Chairman of Econet Strive Masiyiwa, recently announced the introduction of his new business via Facebook, called Kwese Tv a new pay TV service. With the introduction of services like Netflix and most parts of Africa having access to cell-phones it is (dare we say) an ingenious idea. Kwese TV will be going up against African pay TV giants like DSTV with their new business and have already signed deals with major global network/ sporting giants like the NBA and FIFA whose content is already up on Kwese Sports’ website. Masiywa stated on Facebook “Our satellite communications business, Liquid Sat, has already built a platform which allows us to deliver what is known as Direct TV to the home (DTH), in all the countries of Sub-Saharan Africa. Our fibre optic company, Liquid Fibre, is the largest builder of terrestrial fibre in Africa. And, of course, Econet is one of the most experienced mobile network operators on the continent. These are just a few of the assets we’ll deploy in a unique way, never done before in Africa. __Having infrastructure is one thing, but Kwesé TV’s success will depend on our ability both to acquire and also to develop new, high-quality and unique programming at an affordable price.” 6

Just 143 of the total 400 MPs voted in favour of the motion to impeach, with the African National Congress (ANC) closing ranks to protect its embattled leader. Even the newly-reappointed finance minister Pravin Gordhan, thought to be a key figure in the ruling party’s anti-Zuma camp, cast his vote in support of the president. The impeachment motion was tabled following last week’s groundbreaking constitutional court ruling which found that Zuma had failed to uphold the constitution over expensive upgrades made using public money to his private home in Nkandla. While Zuma apologised for acting unconstitutionally, he maintained that he had done so “in good faith” and promised to pay back the cash. He also ignored calls for his resignation. That the ANC accepted this line, and defended Zuma so vociferously in parliament, should come as no surprise given that the president has hand-picked many of the ruling party MPs. But it is

should come as no surprise given that the president has hand-picked many of the ruling party MPs. But it is also a reflection of the party’s longstanding emphasis on displays of public unity, even when there are serious divisions behind the scenes. “There are members of the ANC who no doubt hate Zuma, but they hate the opposition more. They cannot be seen to be collaborating with the opposition, irrespective of the principle at stake,” said political analyst Ralph Mathekga. United opposition At the conclusion of parliament on Tuesday, the major opposition leaders – including the Democratic Alliance’s Mmusi Maimane, the Economic Freedom Fighters’ Julius Malema and the United Democratic Movement’s Bantu Holomisa – gave an unprecedented joint press conference in which they promised to work together to remove Zuma from power.

Movie Moment TELL ME SWEET SOMETHING BY AKIN

TELL ME SWEET SOMETHING is an interesting love story written anddirected by one of our favourite African directors and writers Akin Omotoso as well as writer Robbie Thorpe. The movie stars famous faces like Thomas Gumede, Maps Maponyane, Nomzamo Mbatha and Thembi Seete just to name a few. The story takes place in South Africa and the synposis is “of Moratiwa, an aspiring writer who owns and runs a bookstore in the heart of Johannesburg. The bookstore, like her love life, is not experiencing much success. This all changes when she meets and falls in love with the unlikeliest candidate in the world, Nat, a male model, who has never read a book in his life and is desperate to be loved for his mind not his body. Against the odds, they become romantically involved but then Sashi, Nat’s now pregnant ex-girlfriend, shows up and sets off a chain of romantic complications into motion.” www.imdb.com If you’re into rom-coms check it out and support a proudly African film.

We first fell in love with Ada on

instagram it was ‘follow’ at first sight. When we reached out to her we honestly thought we wouldn’t get her but as the saying goes nothing ventured nothing gained. Not only did she say yes but she has only been one of the most down to earth people we’ve ever interviewed. She’s been featured in countless style websites and blogs and recently I saw her on one of America’s top fashion sites ‘Fashion Bomb Daily’ we tracked her down to find out a little more about her and what it take to a successful blogger. S: Describe Ada in 5 words? A: Clumsy, adventurous, crazy, a fighter, fun S: Your style is amazing and we’re so impressed you take your own images, where did your love of style start? A: I remember being very conscious of how I look from when I was about 5. As far as I can remember I’ve always loved the experience of putting outfits together to create something interesting so I’m not surprised I have ended up in the blogger sphere today. Shall I say, it’s been long time coming. S: And photography how did that start? A: We live in an Era where everything is so visual, so I’m thinking to myself, if you love styling so much and want to share it with the world but with no professional photographer handy or any photography background whatsoever “I’ V E G O T T O F I N D A WAY TO BE SELF-SUFFICIENT OR IT’S NEVER GOING TO HAPPEN AND ‘NEVER HAPPENING’ IS NOT AN O P T I O N . M Y PA S S I O N G AV E M E T H E C O U R A G E T O G I V E I T A G O ”. I’m still learning every day, lots of trial and error but the hope is to get to that point where I can confidently declare myself a pro haha! S:. Who are some creative’s and individuals that helped you shape what you do today and what you love? A: First I’d like to say my mum because she almost always cared too much about every detail of her outfit

and always looked great, I guess I picked up the styling gene from her. The other people who their looks and approach towards styling has inspired me are Solange Knowles, Leandra Medine of man repeller and Jenna Lyons (Creative Director of J Crew), these women love to bring together individual pieces and create something of their own and that’s what makes me tick, they are simply amazing! S: People think what you do is all fun and games but I’ve read some of your posts about the work you put in to give us hair, clothes and photography on fleek, can you please break down a typical work day for us? A: It can be tough! I have the normal everyday family life that includes being a mother and a wife plus a 9-5 job and then on top of all that I’ve gone and added on something as demanding as fashion blogging where in my case, I’m the stylist, the creative director, the photographer, the editor and everything else that comes with the package. 24 hours is literally not enough trying to play these different roles but I have to because it is simply who I am. If I weren’t blogging, I tell you I’d still be taking photos of my creations and keeping them in a box as documentation…. I can’t stop! I do my shoots at lunch time at work. I have my meal only when I’m back at my desk. The truth is no matter how hard it gets “I’M MOR E T H A N GR AT EFUL FOR THE OPPORTUNITY TO BE ABLE TO SHARE AND INSPIRE. STYLING IS MY HAPPY PL ACE!” S:. What advice can you give women on investing? In themselves and in their careers. A: I’d say, whatever you choose to do, make sure you are happy doing it, if it’s your passion then give it everything you can and make it happen because in truth you succeed best in that thing that comes most naturally to you, and most of all be yourself and not a version of someone else.

S: What are some financial tips you would give to women especially those wishing to get into the creative industry, what do they need to know about money and resources? A: As women we want almost everything, but the truth is we can’t have everything so, choose wisely, shop smart(I love my bargains!) and always know your limit, matter of fact, give yourself a limit never to be crossed, this way you don’t go bankrupt just trying to look good. S: How have you grown as a woman and a professional in the past 3 to 5 years? A: Everything I know today I’ve learnt from life experiences. As you get older you learn more and more about yourself as a result you realize things that needs to be changed, improved or ditched.

“LIFE’S A LE ARNING CURVE AND I’M BIG ON L E A R N I N G .”

S: What are some of the goals you hope achieve in 2016? A: My main focus for 2016 is to be able to improve in as many ways as I can in my journey as a blogger. I believe I still have a lot to learn and equally a lot to give. 2016 is also a year where I have decided to be very original with my style, I no longer want to be influenced by what I see around but only be inspired, this way I’m keeping it organic. S: What advise can you leave with some of the readers who want to be in your industry or just want to do what they love like you have? A: I’ll always say to anyone just B E Y O U R S E L F because just like fashion there are a million approaches to anything, what is your own interpretation, T H AT ’ S T H E O N L Y WA Y T O S T A N D O U T , then B E L I E V E I N Y O U R S E L F even if no one else does and K E E P T H E H O P E ALIVE, ANYTHING IS A POSSIBILI T Y , you never know what’ll happen

to natural, it’s clear to see the revolution with hash tags such as #naturalhairgirls or #norelaxer. We’ve even seen big corporates like Dark’n’Lovely take notice of the natural hair revolution and try to make products for this market although most ladies won’t use any Dark’n’Lovely products when they go natural stating that their products are probably the reason many have actually had to gone natural to begin with , anyway try out the Macadamia products and tell us what you think.

If you’re hair has had some form of processing whether it be relaxer, or colour then keeping it moisturised is a must. Also for many women of colour in particular black women hair becomes even more fragile after chemical treatments and therefore needs us to intensify how we treat it. That’s one of the reasons a shampoo with natural oils is a must have for anyone in 19

Although the concept will first come to Brooklyn, IMAX says — if successful — it plans to license the studio for expansion, similar to its movie theater franchise model. Brooklyn was chosen for its first studio due to the surrounding demographic of artists and early adopters, the company said.

It’s game on for livestreaming services as Amazon launches competitor to the oh so popular Netflix. On Sunday the 17th Amazon launched a new livestreaming service called Prime Video which will allow people to sign up a monthly subscription of $8.95 per month in comparison with Netflix’s basic entry subscription of $7.95 (which doesn’t offer HD). Amazon also offers Amazon Prime which as a monthly rather yearly service of $10.99 which means you can stop payment at any time. According to the Wall Street Journal, Amazon will allow downloads for offline viewing (which is awesome for us in Africa with carefully calculated data bundles)

It’ll be an interesting battle of the titans as Amazon also has it’s own programming for the live streaming services but it yet to be as popular as shows from Netflix like ‘Orange is the new black’, ‘House of cards’ and Daredevil. But Amazon doesn’t seem to be backing down anytime soon and cleverly made this announcement just before Netflix’s first quarter earnings report on Monday the 18th of April. We can wait for the livestream battle to really start as more players end it and we watch the dimiss of cable tv as we know it. (Enjoy the show)

Each flower adds a different element and free to a room, we can see this clearly by little things such as the colour of roses, red will add an element of romance, white roses will add a touch of elegence, a clear feel and if you’re on a date definitely tone down the mood to that a friendly one. A great way to add life to your study area or dinning room is to keep fresh flowers that compliment your deco. You can swap these throughout house to at a different feel everyday or if you’re not a flower person you can buy artifical flowers and that way you don’t need to tend to them everyday (although you should wipe them with something moisture during the week so that they dont’ gather dust). If you don’t know much about flowers make it a point to visit your local florist or get home deco books that will give you a few good ideas on what looks good in a table setting versus in the lounge on a daily basis. You can also go online where there is extensive reading material even on content such as which flowers need the least amount of water and sunshine so that you can cater to your flower of choice appropriately.

The future of African education Is mobile the answer to Africa’s many education based problems?

Education has been noted as a right by the UN, AU and many other bodies, it’s actually a universal right and one of the few that the vast majority of the world believe is imperitive to creating a better world. But for many around the world even in SubSaharan Africa education is just a dream and not a reality. It is stated in a BBC report done by the Steve Vosloo that “SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA WILL NEED TO RECRUIT 350,000 NEW TEACHERS EVERY YE AR.” In order to educate it’s rising population which may be near impossile as there is also a large number of illiterate adults” in the region. Africa as a whole has definitely made progress in education

but there still remains a gap in many of the rural parts of Africa, in particular with infrastructure development, equipment to equip student for the new types of jobs on the market, access to qualified and passionate teachers and access to educational materials. Having stated the dreary facts there is a beacon of hope as mobile in Africa has now become the second fastest growing market in the world according to Steve Vosloo in the BBC report and “I N COUNTRIES LIKE BOT SWA N A , GABON AND NAMIBIA THERE ARE MORE SUBSCRIPTIONS THAN T H E R E A R E P E O P L E ... Over 620 million mobile subscriptions mean for the first time in the history of

the continent it’s people” are more connecte than ever before. With companies like MXit the largest African started App company in Africa with at least 50 million subscribers, students do not only have access to texting for next to nothing but also have an opportunity to receive Maths lessons via the app with the help of ‘Dr Maths’ who assists 30,000 school going youth, with Maths on a daily basis. Such ingenious ideas serve as a way to provide home grown solutions to an ever increasingly connected and growing population. Another example is “Yoza Cellphone Stories, which offers downloads of stories and novels, has shown impressive uptake amongst young African readers who enjoy mobile novels or ‘m-novels’. On Yoza, users not only read stories but comment and vote on them. In its first 18 months, Yoza had 470,000 complete reads of its stories and poems, as well as 47,000 user comments.” Services like MXit and Yoza are cheap and easily accessible and this is what makes them attractive even to rural youth and many young Africans with little to no disposable income. Mobile is now vastly seen as the first screen interaction around Africa whereas in the West first screen interaction

with online content was and still is laptops, desktops and tablets. For Africa it is inevitable that mobile is becoming the biggest game-changer in in accessing education. We already see that banking has taken quite a knock with the introduction on services like Impesa in Kenya and Ecocash in Zimbabwe were moneytary transcations are done mostly via mobile phones which have actually replaced the need for a bank account only charging per transaction and not to hold the money in an account. These services have even made it safer to transact and will definitely be feeding into the way education is paid for. We can already see such integration with Econet which runs Ecocash and Ecoschool where learners are able to pay for the educational information and training via ecocash meaning that learners can totally avoid the traditional route of having to look for transport, leave home and incur other costs in order to pay for their education. The new career opporunities will also focus on micro-work and this connectivity we are already seeing in education will (and has aldready started) seep into work places with flexi-hours and working from various locations outside of an office space but remaining digitally connected. There is definitely a need to start planning for an astute and innotive future work force and mobile just might be our saving grace for the future of Africa.

Shana SNAP! it’s SNAPCHAT For many of us who are a bit older snapchat was like... what?! Why do I need to send a video that deletes itself again? But snapchat is here in full effect and taking over the creative business era as well. Not so long ago Snapchat was just a platform for teenagers being silly and looking for an outlet since older people were now on Instagram (Yes people that’s how it works, when old people yet on a platform the youth that made it cool migrate and then it turns into Hi5) According to socialblade.com “Since its initial release in late 2011, the startup created by a group of Stanford University students has become home to over 100 million users every day. The platform was originally intended for oneto-one communication; that is, users would add friends, take photos, and then choose individual friends to send their pictures to. In late 2013, Snapchat realized the potential for more, adding a “Stories” feature that let users share photos and videos to all of their friends at once.” So now Snapchat has a 100 million users many of which are celebs who have official stories and specially made emoji’s and after realizing it’s potential many businesses jumped on the bandwagon not wanting to be left out of becoming

the first influencers on the platform like they’ve done in the past with many social media apps. But according to socialblade.com “Unlike YouTube, it’s not possible for creators to monetize their Snapchat with dynamically-inserted ads. All of their revenue comes from sponsorships and brand-integrations. PROGRESSIVE DIGI TA LS AV V Y B R A N D S A R E B E G I N NING TO RECOGNIZE THE SELLING P OWER T H AT COME S WI T H H AV I N G M I L L I O N S O F T O TA L LY F O C U S E D T E E N A G E E Y E S O N T HEIR PRODUC T S. T HE PL ATFORM REACHES MORE THAN 60% OF U.S. SMARTPHONE OWNERS IN THE 13-34 AGE R A N G E .” With those kinds of numbers it’s easy to see why businesses want to be on Snapchat but can you do as a small business building a brand on snapchat? Well we love how marketing and social media guru Gary Vaynerchuk has created an eco-system around Snapchat. He literally snaps everything from what he does in the morning to get ready for work, him boarding planes for various engagements around the world.

He also does an ask GaryVee snapchat show which is inexpensive but informative in which he gather questions that people have sent him via snapchat (in the form of a snapchat inbox video) and then responds sometimes with other influencers on the show or alone and that is truly an amazing concept. One last tip for individuals wanting to get on Snapchat and be influential is research, research, research, what events, places or items are people interested in seeing in your country? Maybe there’s a Fashion Week happening in your town be bold and stand outside snapping all the famous bloggers and personalities as they get in. You can even dress up professional get a media card message one or two bloggers before hand and then have a short snapchat interview with them outside the venue so that other personalities can see the interaction and be easier to approach if you are brave enough to ask them for an interview as well (you might as well, it’s good PR to just get them on camera even if they say no, you can record them saying no...) Word of caution snapchat is not for the shy or unadventurous so get into the game with your game face on fleek. Happy snapping

media GOOGLE SETS UP SHOP IN SA

So when Google announced thery were setting up offices in South Africa, call me weird but I was looking forward to the offices. I watched the Interns and I know their offices are epic. If news24.com is to be believed “There is a games room covered in indoor lawn, a staff canteen serving a range of healthy foods, and boardrooms named after South African colloquialisms. A real barbershop stool fills out a space made to look like an old-style male hairdresser. A Howzit sign made of wire greets you in the reception area and beautiful beaded art with brilliant Joburg graffiti makes this space speak of Silicon Valley meeting one of Africa’s most vibrant cities. Standing desks, busy geeks and a totally wired environment complete the picture.” Yup I’m going to trust them on this and set a date to walk through these amazing offices asap. We love the idea that Africa can now set their own goal agendas with multi-nationals like Google. Welcome to Africa Google! THE LOERIES 2016 ARE HERE!
