As a highly self-motivated individual, this has given me the drive needed to perceiver through the study of architecture. Coming through such pressurising environment, shows my growth as an individual and my drive to succeed. Mending the Broken Spirit Year Three Thesis Project

The concept for this terms work, is a continuation from the work I’ve complete in the first term. The first term was about looking at the issues within Longton Stokeon-Trent, and highlighting make the public more aware of there surroundings. The specific issue was to do with the community spirit of Longton, which was broken, and causing a wide spread depression about the area. Since now the issue is highlighted, my term two project is about addressing this issue. Looking deeper into this issue and analysing the behaviour of the locals, I’ve concluded that it’s a lack of social interaction within the community that is spurring this depression. So with the building that is to be designed increasing this social interaction would be the focal point of the design to help rebuild this broken town. To enable this to take effect, I’ve chosen to design a cinema institution as it represents a scaled up manifestation of the structure designed in term one to highlighting the issues within the area. As there are no prior cinemas within Longton, this makes it even more as a necessity to have, as cinemas are a place where people congregate, which will help with the integration and interaction within the community.

Cinema Proximity to Longton

As Longton is a town the feeling is that it should have it’s own cinema so that the surrounding community can utilise the facility enabling them to commune with one another as this is a place of socialising, acting as a node within the town. This prevents as shows the need to venture to other town for this facility, as from my research the town want to preserve it’s identity rather than relying on other towns.

The above comment from the people of Longton, shows this sense of community spirit and togetherness before venturing off to the other town for the same event. It does show how a cinema can bring a community together.

As Longton is a place where the people acts not as a community but as individuals this creates a disconnection within the community, which is preventing them to strive forward.

As this disconnection is down to the lack of social interaction between the local of Longton, but increasing this interaction, longton can regain it self as a working community once more.

Taking the organogram I used them to help generate initial adjacency massing aid in visualising a form for the building, which due to this is depicted by the rooms and there orientation. To do this type of massing, I’ll cutting out the rooms at a 1-500 scale, and organising them in a way that I find would be beneficial to the building process. Then the massing would be cut out gain and fastened with glue to give an indication of the overall form

Final Form

The final form is broken up into three segments, which started to come to light during the development process.

2 - Glazed frontage (To allow pedestrians views into the space bridging that link between the internal and the external)

1 - The spine (The section that holds all the build rooms which are a maximum width of 5 meters along the sound section and 8 meters on the west side)

3 - The object (This being the cinema as it is being projected through the building as a mass coming out of the building.)

The idea behind the intervention is to amerce the individual within the device, inherently focusing them in such a way that it alters there current surroundings putting them in the environment which I have created, to highlight the issues within Longton making ti known to the locals.

Housing in the Private Rental Market Wates Giving Ideas Competition

Our main concept, construction, and conservation, aimed toward single and young families looking to rent. The initial target for the selected plot of land was 250, but achieved to fit 227 at the end of the design stage. This decrease was due to making the homes more spacious and comfortable for living, which current housing does not aspire to. To understand what our potential clients needed to make a house a home, we underwent a survey within different residential areas. The feedback that we received showed that many-desired houses to be more open to natural light, more naturally ventilated and equipped with more storage space. Another main design driver is that as a team we wanted families not to change location as their family situation changes. So we predict the stages families can go through starting from young couple to having children to them leaving home and being retired. With these different situations, the house can adapt to the change in circumstance, therefore eliminating the hassle of moving out from a community they are comfortable and attached to. The house in its original form is a compact shell, with the essential two bedrooms, and then to the next stage, which has three bedrooms with more space for larger families. The main features that we decided to work on are the technology and comfort aspects. As technology in the 21st century is quickly ascending, due to this over time it has increase by double since the last century. People today are using more electrical devices within the house, whether it is entertainment or daily essential needs. This incurs a problem that is due to the insufficient amount of plug sockets increasing the need for extension cables, which can lead to many inconveniences. Our proposed solution is to fix more mains sockets behind the skirting board, as a child safety precaution and eliminate the issue of having meters of extension cables. Another feature included is how the house allows natural light natural light into the building. In the central hub area of the house, included is a skylight that penetrates the main living space and glows throughout the adjacent rooms. The use of double height ceilings and voids have allowed us to split up the different living quarters and use the sky light to allow natural sunlight and ventilation into the whole house. Gradually the living standards are rising and more young families are looking for a house that is not only spacious, but also practical to their future needs. Therefore, the major advantage of this potential design is that it meets the requirements of an expanding

family. As this house evolves around the person living within, it gives them the opportunity to think long term about there future. The house type is detached giving the individuals more freedom inside making it feel more in depended. In contrast to this neighbours have a shared garden which expand the initial garden if they so please.

Evolo Competition Entry 2013 Observatory

Site Located in Iceland, this idea around the concept is in aid of air traffic control, keeping the air clear from volcanic ash, as it disrupts travel and can cause damage to aeroplane. So the design works as an extractor filtering the air from the ash, whilst making use of the northern lights as a tourist attraction.

Two Week placement

This placement helped to aid my understanding of the ins and outs of a normal day at an architectural practice. Throughout the two weeks, I worked on three projects, on the first drafting the design access statement and planning statement. The second editing the plan and section, and the third getting a render done for on of there schemes for a client. Overall, I can see the big jump from education practice, looking at how in practice how we have to deal with multiple projects simultaneously, rather than one at a time.

For the Wood Green project I worked on making adjustment on both plans and sections using Vectorworks. These adjustments was working on making the attic habitable and also rearranging the lower floor living space.

Rake Hill Project During this project I worked on the Design and Planning Statement, as this project was at the point of being processed for planning.

The Seed Bank

Year Two Term 2 Design Project For this building the form derived from the arrangement of the building with the private area more to the upper floors, along with the idea of maximising natural solar illumination of the building. For this two atrium where introduced, one for the staff area, and the other for the residential area. To control the solar gain for the staff room, facade and roof mechanical louvres where introduced. These will help especially in times of intense solar gain during the summer months.
