Will Dottie get her King? In Jack and the Beanstalk, which plays the Careline Theatre in Alcalalí from Wednesday January 11 to Sunday January 15, poor Dottie Trot has lost her cow and is about to lose her brave, handsome son, Jack. The cow got sold for what turned out to be a bag of beans and Jack is so smitten with the lovely Jill that wedding bells can't be far away. Small wonder, then, that the canny dame is on the lookout for a man to make her own. Not just any man you understand. Dottie has set her heart on no less a personage than His Majesty King Maurice of the Land of Merrydale. From your seat in the stalls you are likely to enjoy this possible romance hugely. Dame Trot is played by Andy Headford, a very experienced player of pantomime dames. In his milking garb you would be forgiven for thinking Dottie is just a little past her sell-by date, but when Andy dresses for king hunting he dresses to kill. To say his Dame Trot becomes really seductive and very, very glamorous is a complete understatement. Who could resist such a dame when she starts to coo, "Maurice! Maurice! Oh there you are Cherie" and "Remember the soft lights, the

Samaritans sing carols at Iceland Last Saturday December 17, Samaritan volunteers and friends entertained shoppers with a collection of Christmas carols and popular songs at Iceland, Avenida Valanciana, Torrevieja. Shoppers of every nationality joined in the singing and some even took to dancing along with the music, adding to the Christmas atmosphere. The singing continued for five hours and Samaritans were very pleased to report they collected 200€ for their charity. Samaritans operate an emotional support helpline and wish to advise that their helpline is operational throughout the holidays from 8pm until

midnight and every evening 365 days of the year, phone: 902 883 535. Following three very successful years operating in Spain, Samaritans would like to thank all their volunteers,

ITV Orihuela RFC On Saturday November 25 ITV Orihuela RFC played away to local rivals Torrevieja. After a delay in the kick off the game started and was soon played under floodlights. ITV Orihuela started at a fast pace against the more experienced Torry forwards and Orihuela's defence repelled everything that Torry could throw at them. At the end of the first half, the score was 13-11 to Orihuela. In the second half ITV Orihuela RFC continued to dominate the scrum, but the lineouts were fairly even with Orihuela having two brand new jumpers in their first game. The final score gave ITV Orihuela victory by 18-14, a

great result for Orihuela who had quite a few players missing through injury. Our next game for the seniors is against UCAM Murcia on December 17 at home. The club trains on Tuesday and Thursday at the Miguel

Family Medical Centre, Albir

FOLLOWING THE closure of The English Medical Clinic in Albir, long standing patient Mr. Howard Benedict felt somewhat bereft, having been used to the luxury of medical care, delivered in English. With no other English clinic in the area that he knew of, and with Mr. Benedict having a SIP card, he decided to try the Spanish medical social care system. The first ‘problem’ he encountered was the frustration of having to wait for a G.P appointment. Whilst emergencies were dealt with swiftly, Mr. Benedict soon realised that for routine G.P consultations you have to wait for the next available appointment which may be a week away! Eventually, Mr. Benedict was given his first appointment but unfortunately because his Spanish is so limited, the doctor was understandably reluctant to see him. Therefore, another appointment had to be scheduled and Mr. Benedict had to source an interpreter. Having found an interpreter and re-scheduled his appointment, Mr. Benedict finally managed to see the G.P. Whilst he felt the medical care was satisfactory (albeit his consultation barely lasted 5 minutes) he quickly realised that it was extremely frustrating and difficult having to discuss private medical issues via an interpreter. Basically, Mr. Benedict was at a loss of where to go

to continue his medical care. He was therefore delighted to hear of the opening of the English speaking Family Medical Centre, situated in the heart of Albir. He was even more pleased to discover that to see the G.P would cost him a mere 38€ - less than he’d paid for an interpreter!

Mr. Benedict says ‘I cannot tell you how pleased I am that the Family Medical Centre has opened. I now have peace of mind that all the services of the medical centre are available for myself and my family to use – all in English and all the services are very reasonably priced. What a find!’

X RAY AT THE AIRPORT

A 34 year old British man was recently stopped by the Guardia Civil when he was walking through customs at an airport in Tenerife. He had arrived on a flight from the Spanish mainland, and couldn’t give the officers a good reason for his visit. After a search which revealed nothing, they decided to x-ray him. This resulted in a perfect “picture” of the 75 capsules of Heroin that he had swallowed. Weighing almost a kilo, it is enough to provide him with a very long stay on the island. But it won’t be a sun bed he is lying on!

CAR THEFT

A Belgian couple had their car stolen at gunpoint by two delinquents recently. The criminals had escaped from police as they were being taken to court in a small town near Brussels and escaped in the stolen car. To help get over their ordeal, the two Belgians, booked a holiday at Guardamar near Alicante. Imagine their surprise when they were relaxing on their sun beds to see the same two crooks walk past on the beach! The quick thinking husband walked up to the road at the top of the beach, and located their car, puncturing a tyre so they couldn’t lose it again. Then they called the Guardia Civil who came to the beach, where they located and arrested the bad guys.

DOG DONORS

Valencia has seen the first blood bank set up especially for dogs. Set up in the Montoro Botella laboratory just under a year ago, it now has 120 dog donors on its books. Donor dogs have to be between 1 and 8 years old, weigh at least 25 Kg, and be of a docile temperament (probably as they have to have a needle stuck in them for at least 15 minutes!) The best donors are the Iberian hunting hounds, as their blood is seen as “universal” to all other breeds. It’s not known whether the dogs get a cup of tea and a biscuit afterwards!

‘Peep’ Toe Shoes According to Spanish newspaper El Mundo a Spanish man was recently arrested in Tarragona for peeping up ladies skirts aided by a mobile phone inside his shoe. The home-made device involved a standard mobile phone placed inside a trainer style shoe with a hole cut in the top. This enabled him to film under the victim’s skirt. But his sick game came to an abrupt end when he was caught suspiciously close to his son’s girlfriend in a shopping precinct. An off duty police officer noticed his foot was angled unnaturally in between the girls legs and wasted no time in apprehending him thus exposing his vile activity.

What’s in Davy Jones´ Locker? Benidorm council workers together with volunteers from all over the Valencian region have cleaned up the sea bed from around Benidorm island. Some of the volunteers involved were snorkellers including the ones that work at Benidorm´s Mundomar. Almost 510 kilos of rubbish was collected consisting mainly of glass bottles, plastic bottles and cans. After the mornings work everyone was given a canned drink after such thristy work. Let´s hope they didnt then throw the cans into the sea!

Steve Holmes or ‘The Flying Pig’ as he is affectionately known, is a well-known character in and around the Benidorm scene and can be found most days in the kitchen area of the Yorkshire Pride II on Calle Londres serving up traditional English cooked meals. For some 15 years now Steve has been researching the wartime exploits of his late father John Holmes, affectionately known to his comrades as Sherlock. He has spent thousands of hours on the Internet and read over 100 books specialising in the RAF, World War II aircraft and the sorties’ flown by the crews of these brave men. He has read the diaries and log books from the very men who flew with his father and indeed contacted many of the surviving family members who in turn opened their hearts to this likeable man from Lancashire. The resultant book is simply stunning. Sherlock’s Squadron is a work of art and something Steve Holmes should be rightly proud of. Although his first effort at writing a book he skilfully builds up the characters from the first few turns of the pages and somehow captures the heartache and hardship of wartime Britain.

Steve described his father as his best friend and within a few pages we almost feel as if we know our protagonist John ‘Sherlock’ Holmes. It wasn’t plain sailing, war never is and the author makes no apologies for describing in graphic detail the end of many of these young men’s lives. Steve Holmes also skilfully weaves in the home life of his father and the relationship with his girlfriend Dorothy who would later become his wife Steve Holmes is not your stereotypical looking author. For a start he doesn’t have a beard or a high forehead and will openly admit that he left school without any recognisable qualifications. But his book has everything you would expect from a bestseller and deserves a big publisher and its rightful place on bookshelves along with Mr Grisham and Wilbur Smith. Steve had a small supply printed and has a dozen copies left in stock at the Yorkshire Pride II priced at €8.99. Go along and pay him a visit. He’s an amiable type of chap and likes nothing better than to talk about his pride and joy, 196 Squadron and his book makes a great gift for those interested in understanding what life fighting for King and Country was really like.

Como norma general, las bicicletas y el TRAM tendrán prioridad sobre los peatones en sus vías de paso, tanto los carriles–bici como las vías del tranvía. Incluso cuando no haya señalizaciones. Es la principal novedad de la nueva ordenanza municipal de circulación de peatones y vehículos, que actualiza la anterior de 2005 con la incorporación de estos dos medios de transporte. El TRAM no funcionaba entonces y el carril–bici era prácticamente inexistente en el casco urbano alicantino.

Sudden death How is it possible and can it be prevented? Cause: In people over the age of 40 it is almost always due to the narrowing of one of the coronary arteries (the arteries that supply blood to the heart). At rest or in moderate exertion, sufficient blood can pass through an artery that is 70% blocked, without problems. However, especially during a sudden exsessive exertion, the blood supply to the heart can be insufficient. This can cause a heart attack, and this in turn can cause a rhythm disturbance called ventricular fibrillation, which stops the heart. Sometimes, reanimation to restore the normal heart beat can be effective. Another cause of sudden death is the sudden rupture of a widening of the big artery in the stomach: an aneurysm. Think of it as a weak spot in the tyre of a bike, which suddenly bursts.

Are there problems before the event? Not necessarily, or they are not very severe: ■ The classic signs of chest pain or heavy sensation in the chest when for instance walk-

ing uphill or up a flight of stairs , are not present in everyone. ■ Shortness of breath or weakness on exertion can be present ■ Also, slowly increasing tiredness, and the feeling that you can sleep the whole day, could be due to insufficient supply of blood to the heart muscle ■ A stomach-ache as sign of a widening of the artery in the stomach is seldom there.

Who is running a risk? ■ A very serious risk factor is if there is a history of heart attacks in your family at an early age. ■ A previous heart attack, coronary artery bypass grafting, or PTCA with or without stent. Other diseases which predispose you for a heart attack: ■ diabetes ■ high blood pressure ■ high cholesterol or high homocysteine ■ obesity ■ sedentary lifestyle ■ and especially smoking When several risk factors are present at the same time, the risk for a heart attack increases.

DENTISTS

When should you see your GP or cardiologist? When the complaints mentioned earlier or risk factors are present. These days more and more people choose preventive screening. This is the reason why since 2000 the number of heart attacks in the USA has dropped by almost a third. The situation is similar for preventive screening for breast, uterus and prostate cancer. If you had a pervious heart attack, PTCA or bypass surgery, a yearly extensive check is mandatory.

What investigations are needed to prevent sudden death? ■ ECG. A normal ECG at rest is not a garantee that all is well ■ A stress test is necessary to see what happens with the ECG, the bloodpressure and possible complaints during exertion. ■ An echocardiogram (cardiac ultrasound) is necessary to see if the pumpfunction of the heart muscle, the valves and pressures in the heart are normal.

■ Echo of the carotid arteries (arteries in your neck). The interior lining of this artery has a strong predictive value for the chances of a heart attack or stroke. ■ Echo of the abdominal aorta: an aneurysm of the artery can be seen directly.

In adolescents Symptoms: there can be complaints of not feeling well on exertion, or dizzyness or palpitations. With the additional strain and effort that can occur during a sports match, this can be just too much. Causes: in most cases it is due to an abnormal heart muscle that is too thick on one side

and prevents the flow out of the heart on peak exertion. It can run in the family. In this case an ECG can show the way, but it should be evaluated by a cardiologist. A physical examination by a GP or paediatrician mostly is normal. When an abnormal ECG is found, an echocardiogram should be performed which will confirm the diagnosis. A recent editorial in the New England Journal of Medicine urged an ECG to be performed on every adolescent who is going to start sports. In Italy this has been mandatory since ’82, and the number of sudden death while

taking part in sports has declined by 90%.

When to see the doctor When there are any complaints during exertion. I am a strong advocate of the Italian law to check every adolescent. Breast Cancer Awareness Day THE FIGHT against breast cancer continues on the Promenade of Villa Joyosa on Saturday. ‘Anemone’ (a self-help group for women with breast cancer and their families), in collaboration with the Department of Health, has organised during the month of October a series of events to commemorate International Breast Cancer Day (19th October). Next Saturday (15th October) opens the programme of events with the Reading of the manifesto for Breast Cancer Memorial Day by the Councillor for Health, Beatriz Llinares, on the Paseo Marítimo. Optical stores creating more jobs in Spain Despite the economic slowdown in Spain, there are some sectors and businesses which are able to buck the trend and create positive employment opportunities for now and the future. The optical sector has seen growth from chains and optical groups which is creating employment throughout the country. One optician who has been expanding recently and creating new jobs is Specsavers Opticas. After a successful year and an increase in Spanish customers, they are able to employ new staff and are even expanding to other parts of coastal Spain and the Balearics. This new employment will give a boost to the areas they are located in and offer young people opportunities to enter into a good profession for the future. Specsavers Opticas are now recruiting for two Optical Assistants for their Jávea and Calpe stores. The ideal candidates will have excellent customer service skills, attention to detail, maths skills and be fluent in at least English & Spanish. Optical experience is an advantage, but training will be given. A couple of weeks ago, there was a story about Monument Circle in downtown Indianapolis and the 284 feet tall Soldiers and Sailors monument. Earlier last spring, the statue at the top, known as Miss Victory, had been removed from the structure to be cleaned and repaired and now the 38-foot bronze icon of downtown was ready to be put back on top of the monument. However, the city fathers and mothers had decided the statue should be on display for a day before the move. I immediately thought it would be a good idea to go downtown and get a picture. Naturally I didn't make it. When I went to Mooresville to get the car gassed up, the energy gods must have been having a bad day because gas prices were up. The cost of the fuel it would take to get to Indianapolis didn't warrant making a trip just too take a picture. So I didn't go. A couple of days later, Susie and I had to go to the city and on our way up there the guy on the radio happened to mention that the statue was still not back where she belongs due to the weather. "Did you hear that, Susie?" I asked. "We can still get a picture of Miss Victory." "I wasn't aware we wanted one." "I wanted to get one for my weblog but I didn't get it done." "You mean like all those projects at home you started and never finished??" "Not exactly," I muttered. I love being married. Otherwise, I doubt that I'd ever get anything finished without someone to remind me. I have been so blessed. When we finished our business on the south side of India-

napolis, it was still too early to get a picture. My plan was to wait until after six o'clock when downtown parking is free but that didn't happen. First of all, Indianapolis is a very downtown-oriented city and there were a lot of things going on in the downtown area which meant there were people everywhere including a hundred or so who had the same idea I had. This meant no parking spaces even close to Monument circle. I finally found one a few blocks away and discovered that free parking after six doesn't exist anymore. The meters now want money until nine o'clock. Being somewhat of a skinflint, I resented that change. In addition, since I was last in the city, a slick new electronic meter system has been put in place. That explained the additional paid parking hours. Someone has to pay for the slick new system. There are no individual meters anymore. Each city block has a collection point where you actually go to put money in what resembles an ATM. Of course, you need to know your parking spot number, which I didn't, so I trudged back to the car and found the number; 7003. When I got back to the device, I tried to give it my credit card but it just blinked when I put it in the slot and said something about an invalid transaction. We searched through the car, found a dollar's worth of coins and fed that to the contrivance. The thing took my dollar but again told me the transaction was invalid and gave me back ninety cents. Even though I consider myself to be pretty savvy with electronic gadgets, this one had me stumped. I was afraid that

maybe my age had completely caused technology to finally pass me by. But just then an intelligent looking young lady came up and started fiddling with the device. She could not make it work either. "Let's just go," Susie said. "They can't give us a ticket if the thing doesn't work. " "Susie, Susie, Susie, you are so naïve. The authorities don't give a fig whether that machine is working or not. They want to give me a ticket." "Don't be so negative. It will be okay." I wanted to believe her but I also knew I would get a parking ticket regardless of her faith in the system. I had no idea what the fine would be but, given the state of the economy, I figured it would be hefty and I also knew there would be no ex-

plaining the situation to a Judge. "Honest to God, Judge. This electronic contraption wasn't working. It just of blinked at me and said something I didn't understand." "Sure it did, old man. London.—Britons remain gloomy about their financial prospects but the Conservative Party is seen as having the best policies to manage a struggling economy, the latest Reuters/Ipsos MORI monthly poll showed. Labour remained the most popular party, but its support had slipped to its lowest level since last October. Labour leader Ed Miliband’s personal ratings were the lowest since he became party leader last September, falling back after he made a strong impression during a phonehacking scandal. Britain has been ruled by a Conser vative-Liberal Democrat coalition since May 2010 and a national election is not due until 2015. However, the main parties will hold their annual conferences in the coming three weeks and their leaders will be looking closely at the opinion polls to gauge the national mood before they face the party faithful. Thirty-three percent of those polled thought the Conservatives had the best policies for the economy, against 23 percent who backed Labour and eight percent for the Lib Dems.

Party leader Nick Clegg divides his own party supporters, with 50 percent of Lib Dems satisfied with his performance but 43 percent dissatisfied. Among the public at large, 47 percent said they were dissatisfied with the way Labour leader Miliband was doing his job, while only 31 percent were satisfied. Miliband became Labour leader last September, pipping his brother David to the post but has so far struggled to make much of an impact. He won plaudits earlier this year for his robust response to a phone-hacking scandal centred on Rupert Murdoch’s News of the World newspaper, but needs to build on that with a strong performance at his party conference at the end of September. One crumb of comfort for Miliband might be that more than half of those polled were dissatisfied with Prime Minister David Cameron’s performance. Ipsos MORI interviewed a representative sample of 1,008 adults aged 18+ across Great Britain. Interviews were conducted by telephone 10-12 September 2011. In a summer season where bookings have rocketed to the delight of hotel managers and the area has experienced its best July in five years, the practice of seizing last-minute deals is causing staffing chaos as management is unable to project service levels to accommodate demand. “It is impossible to plan ahead,” said Hosbec president Javier Garcia, “And that leads to an overload of work among existing staff and affects the quality of service.” CONTRACTS The proposed solution to the problem is to apply a levy to last minute bookings and

reward advance reservations, “…much the same as the airlines do – because last minute bookings do not benefit anyone, neither the employer, the employees or the customers,” said Garcia, who went on to point out that the present booking climate also affected employees’ chances of securing permanent contracts, with labour constantly engaged on a casual basis to cope with unexpected numbers. SPORT Among other improvements for Benidorm Hosbec recommends an injection of sporting activities and events to compliment the city’s image as the leading tourism attraction in the region and to raise its sporting profile. Hosbec did not comment on whether a tax on last minute bookings might prompt cashstrapped holidaymakers to look elsewhere for fun in the sun…

CARING FOR YOUR EYES THIS SUMMER By Colin Evans, Specsavers Opticas, Torrevieja

Experts say that teenagers and young adults in their 20s and 30s, who are exposed to sunlight around five hours per day with no hat or glasses, double their chances of developing early age related macular degeneration and other problems. Even reflections from sand, snow, pavements, and water can all damage the eye without even looking up or leaving the shade, so sunglasses should always be worn outside. It is recommended that we wear sunglasses even on cloudy days, especially in a country like Spain where the sunlight is stronger all year round. Sun damage is purely caused by UV, not brightness itself, so even when it’s cloudy the rays still affect you. Children under 10 should definitely be protected as much as possible from sunlight damage to the eyes. This is because children’s eyes are not able to block as much UV as adults’ eyes can, and unfortunately the eyes never really recover from it. Sunglasses and a hat will give the best protection and there are some special children’s glasses on the market which are high protection and don’t easily fall off. Children and adults with lighter coloured eyes are more at risk of sun damage to the eyes, so they should take extra care. The dangers of sun damage Exposure to the sun’s harmful rays can lead to the following common eye problems: • Cataracts • Macular degeneration • Eyelid skin cancer • Pinguecula - small, yellowish, slightly raised lesions that form on the surface of the white part of the eye. They can

cause irritation, a feeling that there is something in the eye, and dry eyes. • Pterygium - scar tissue that can grow over the surface of the eye and impair the vision.

Buying the right sunglasses When buying sunglasses, make sure they offer the right level of protection for your eyes. Look for UVA and UVB protection of 99% or higher. This does not necessarily come with an expensive designer pair, so be sure to ask when buying. Yellow tinted glasses also protect the eyes from blue light rays which may also cause damage. Big sunglasses or the wrap around style are the best as they offer protection around the sides of the eyes as well as the front. Be especially careful with children’s glasses as they are often more of a toy and do not protect the eye at all. EXPANDS DUE TO DEMAND To anyone that has visited its Campoverde and Los Balcones stores, it will be no surprise that Marks and Spencer retailer Unos is expanding due to popular demand. The new store opened its doors in La Zenia on Saturday and was an instant success, with clothes literally flying off the rails. Unos stocks all items of ladies clothing from a specific range sold by Britain´s best loved store and if you haven´t yet discovered this fashion treasure trove you are definitely missing out. The items stocked include: jeans, trousers, tops, dresses, cardigans, skirts, jackets and coats. In fact everything except underwear and swimwear. New stock arrives every six weeks and there are usually around 5,000 items per delivery, which will be split evenly between the two Unos stores in La Zenia and Campoverde. The Los Balcones store, housed in the Filton Centre, will now be used for clearance stock only. Sea bed destroyers Ecologist association ANSE alleged that three fishing boats based in Torrevieja harbour were using illegal fishing techniques between Cabo de Palos and San Pedro del Pinatar last month. ANSE president Pedro García said trawling for fish cannot be practised in waters less then 50 metres deep because it destroys the sea bottom. "Most fish breed in these areas which have a rich flora and fauna," he said. "The practices are against the law." The boats were reported to Murcia's department for farming, which is investigating. "The ministry for environment tracked the position box of the boats and it has confirmed our report," stated Sr García.

Shoplifters nabbed Four Algerian shoplifters were caught at an Elche shopping centre with clothing worth over 2,500 euros along with 6,600 euros in cash, advised National Police. A security guard called police on July 14 at around 14.30, after he surprised several people who were stealing the clothes by intercepting them after they had passed through the checkout. Officers confirmed the allegations, arrested the suspects and found more clothing and cash in their vehicle.

Hospital doctor probe call Greens want national investigation into foreign medics' qualifications By Dave Jones THE GREEN party (Los Verdes) has called on the national department for health to launch an investigation into doctors who are allegedly working without legal qualifications at Torrevieja hospital. According to the Green party 'there have been a high number of deaths at the hospital where families have not been given sufficient explanations to justify them'. These include three babies, leading to official complaints being presented against the hospital and public protests in the town. "We have asked the ministry of health to open an investigation into some of the doctors who are working at the hospital after it emerged that a doctors who attended to one of the dead babies did not have the

correct qualifications and that his medical degree had not been standardised in Spain," said party spokesman José Manuel Dolón. The Greens stated that the babies' families believe their deaths could be linked to the alleged training deficiencies of doctors who do not hold legal Spanish qualifications. "This calls into question the quality of service being offered by the hospital," added Sr Dolón. He said that the inaction of the regional government in the matter had led his party to ask the national government to intervene. "We want them to check the qualifications of all the medical staff operating at the hospital," stated Sr Dolón. CBNews revealed back in 2007 that a high number of

non-Spanish doctors employed in health centres in Orihuela Costa and Torrevieja were working without officially approved qualifications. At the time, a doctor working for Torrevieja Salud warned that the number of these medics was growing. "There is an outrageous number of not officially recognised GPs," he said. "They are dealing with human lives." The parents of the three young children who died at Torrevieja hospital have sent a petition of 6,000 signatures to the ministry of the interior calling for 'an explanation' from the hospital. It will take place on Saturday, September 3, taking a five-kilometre route that starts at El Cabo Kiosko, Cabo Cervera, and finishes at the Alba restaurant. The walk, which starts at 10.30, is raising funds for what was previously known as the Laura Appeal. Laura Grewar was a young mother who died in August 2010, after a long battle against cancer. She left behind her four young children.

The Davilla/Grewar Family Fund aims to provide support to the four children aged between seven and 12 years old. Proceeds collected go towards paying for a carer for the children six days a week. Their father José is a long distance lorry driver, who works night shifts and is unable to pay the care bill. It is covered with millions of tonnes of heavy metals which were dumped from La Unión mines for 33 years without control. The minerals are due to be stored in Corta San José: an opencast mine which has to be reinforced to house the debris. A giant conveyor belt is to be installed to transport the minerals from the bay to the mine. The clean up works are scheduled from 2012 and are expected to be completed by 2015.

La Unión mayor Francisco Bernabé said on Tuesday that it was a happy day for the town. "We have been waiting for 21 years for this moment," he said. "Portmán will be turned

Ecologists attack port expansion schemes GREENPEACE'S hard-hitting annual report into the destruction of Spain's coastline puts the expansion of ports in the spotlight. The ecologists warn that 20 of the 28 industrial ports along over 8,000 kilometres of coast are expanding or plan to expand. Executive director of Greenpeace España, Miren Gutiérrez, said: "This excessive increase does not correspond with the decrease in demand for port services, or with the lessons that we should have learned from the property crisis." In the Levante region, El Gorguel in Cartagena and Alicante have been fingered. In addition to highlighting the long term and ongoing damage to the adjacent bay of Escombreras in Cartagena, Greenpeace calls on the government not to approve the 1,500-million-euro expansion project for El Gorguel. It foresees a 1.5-kilometrelong quay for containers, surrounded by a four-kilometre dock, a 190-hectare esplanade reclaimed from the sea and a two-million-square-metre storage area. As well as affecting the protected Sierra de la Faustilla, other nearby mountains would be destroyed to bring filling materials for the port, as would the rocky seabed and sections of sea grass prairies. In Alicante, Greenpeace claim the plan to expand the quays to house silos for storing clinker for cement will increase contamination and destruction of the environment. Fuel deposits were removed from the area in 1999 to make way for a leisure complex and so housing was built nearby. But in 2006 the port authority decided the land would be used for industrial purposes instead. "This is a head-on collision with the fundamental rights of citizens to health, safety and the environment," asserts the report. Also the port authority did not draw up an overall environmental impact evaluation, in contravention of EC directives, say the ecologists. Beer on tap at the port Popular Oktoberfest starts in Alicante tomorrow The immensely popular Oktoberfest Espa帽a beer festival will be taking place in Alicante from tomorrow, Thursday. Palma.— HMS Albion, flagship of the Royal Navy, will visit Palma from this Friday for a short visit as she concludes a major deployment to the Mediterranean and Middle East. The 18,500 tonne amphibious assault ship is designed to carry Royal Marines to wherever they are needed in the world, land them ashore by helicopter and landing craft and then support them as they carry out their mission. HMSAlbion has been leading the Royal Navy’s Response Force Task Group, a maritime quick reaction force designed to provide a range of capabilities at short notice in response to unforeseen events. Since leaving Britain in April, HMS Albion has undertaking amphibious exercises in the Mediterranean, supported NATO maritime operations off Libya and, most recently, helped to strengthen the UK’s relationships in the Middle East. Go on… be a volunteer! AFTER FINDING myself at a bit of a loose end, I have decided to spend my newly found free time doing something useful! Lyn Baines, the Director of MABS Murcia/Mar Menor suggested that I could become a volunteer for the MABS Cancer Care Centre in San Javier and after losing a good friend of mine to this horrible disease in May, I decided that this would be the perfect opportunity to

help a really worthy cause. Earlier this week, I visited the centre, met some of the volunteers and the centre’s Manager, Sue Thomason and discovered what it takes to be a volunteer. HIGH STANDARDS The centre has been open for six months and Sue has been running the centre, which includes a sales floor and a therapy room, since it opened. After being a Profit Improvement Manager for ASDA the centre is in very good hands with Sue. She explained to me what they sell: “The sales floor encompasses clothes and bric-a-brac including books, DVDs and CDs as well as paintings, jewellery, footwear and accessories. I like to bring attentive customer service and high retail standards to the sales floor here and all our volunteers are asked to adhere to these standards.” I quickly realised that this centre is no ordinary charity shop. For example, they only use one type of coat hanger, all the clothes are new or nearly new, are laundered and ironed and face the customer flow so that as soon as you walk in you can see all the garments on display.

FEEL GOOD FACTOR As a volunteer, you are expected to get involved in all aspects of the centre’s sales floor including sorting out donations, ironing and pricing the clothes as well as working on the till. Sue told me: “Volunteers can choose to work here one day a week or five days a week. The centre opens at 10am and closes at 2pm, so you only have to commit to four hours a day.” Sue likes to implement a ‘feel good factor’ at the centre especially as it is often visited by cancer sufferers who use the therapy room at a discounted rate on the first floor. She says: “It is important that we offer a pleasant environment and many of the volunteers are either ex-cancer sufferers, have cared for someone with cancer or have had someone close to them suffer from the disease.”

There are currently 28 permanent volunteers at the centre but they do need more. El alcalde de Bunyola, Jaume Isern (PP), dejará su plaza como funcionario y se dedicará íntegramente a las tareas de Alcaldía y su sueldo dependerá de las funciones y servicios de los que se haga cargo, con posibilidad de alcanzar un cómputo anual máximo de 35.400 euros. Pizzinato said that Cairn Energy has a licence to drill in five areas of the stretch of water and will be boring for oil at a depth of 1,400 metres.

Marine disaster Pizzinato pointed out that less than 18 months ago, British Petroleum had been

drilling in the Gulf of Mexico at a depth of 1,500 metres when a wellhead snapped and the surrounding marine ecosystems were destroyed by the billions of gallons of crude oil that escaped. Pizzinato said that the coast of Spain is already beginning to suffer the effects of climate change and that the combined risks to the environment and economy that oil exploration will entail, are “simply too high.” Tourism and fishing will be badly affected, she said.

El diplomático mallorquín Jaume Segura Socías será nombrado nuevo embajador de España en la República Dominicana, según adelantó en su edición de ayer el diario El País. Segura, que en la actualidad cuenta con 37 años de edad, regresará en su nuevo destino a la zona del Caribe, que él ya conoce muy bien puesto que su carrera diplomática la inició en la representación española en Jamaica. También estuvo destinado en Guinea Conakry. Desde el año 2008 Jaume Segura ha estado estrechamente vinculado a la carrera política de Trinidad Jiménez, toda vez que ha acompañado a la política socialista como jefe de gabinete en todos los cargos que ha ocupado, primero en la Secretaría de

Good vision is crucial for learning, development, work, study, driving and sports and should not be taken for granted. As our eyes develop and change during our life, they should be regularly checked to ensure that they are healthy, functioning correctly and that any problems can be rectified. Experts recommend yearly eyetests from the age of three onwards, as untreated problems with your vision can lead to permanent damage and problems with learning and development. In this article there is a brief rundown of issues to look out for in the different stages of our lives to help you care for your and your family’s eyes.

Babies and Toddlers Good vision is very important to children because so much of what they learn is taken in through their eyes. So it’s never too soon to start your child’s eye care. You’ll find most infants and pre-school children have regular vision screening as part of their routine developmental checks. These early checks are invaluable, but aren’t as thorough as a full eye examina-

tion by a qualified optometrist. When your child is born, the paediatrician will check their vision when they are still in the hospital ward. We advise that children should have their first eye examination at around three years old. Learning difficulties can sometimes be caused by uncorrected vision problems, so the earlier they can be detected, the better the chance of correcting them. It’s important to remember that eye examinations won’t hurt your child, and that your child doesn’t have to be able to read yet.

Early School Years During the first 12 years of our lives, as much as 80% of learning is accomplished through our vision. Yet, one out of every four children has an undetected vision problem that may inhibit their progress. It can be difficult to spot. Children have no way of knowing if what they see is any different from what others can see. But there are a number of tell-tale signs you can look out for, for example: is your child sitting too close to the TV; do they rub their eyes repeatedly; are they clumsy; do they squint? By maintaining a regular routine of eye examina-

Life with Linda... “focus on the positive”

Positive thinking is certainly a powerful thing, but positive expression is equally important. Many people, especially marriage partners and parents of small children, seem to believe that the best way to get somebody to change for the better is to consistently point out to them what they are doing wrong. These authority figures criticize, day in and day out. Eventually the people they are talking to become frustrated and often start to feel angry, because they see that nothing they say or do has any positive effect, and sometimes things even get worse. Has this ever happened to you? If so, there’s a principle of cognitive psychology that I teach in my seminars you’ll want to know about. It’s simply this: We move toward and become like what we think about. And we automatically behave in ways that match the image we have of our capabilities and ourselves. When you focus on what is going wrong, you tend to experience more of the problem. And when you focus on the solution, you move toward it, as surely as day follows night. So instead of telling folks what they are doing wrong, why not tell them what they are doing right? Instead of telling them what the problem is, why not tell them what the solution looks like and how it will benefit them personally? And while you’re at it, why not tell them how much you enjoy and appreciate the thoughtful or bright or funny things they say and do. Remember the behavior that you focus on and praise tends to be repeated. I used to cringe when I was walking round the supermarkets in the UK, you don´t here it so much here, there again

there are not as many children here as there!! But I would hear parent after parent telling their child “if I have told you once, I have told you a thousand times”, so it seems neither the child nor the parent got the picture!!! How many times were they going to say the same thing one thousand and one, one thousand one hundred and one, one million????’ Einstein´s theory on insanity is to repeatedly do the same thing, in the same same and expect a different outcome.....sound familiar? If a pattern of behaviour or a way of life is not working for you, why keep at it? If something does not make you happy, why keep trying it? If the person you are with is not who you want to be with, why stay? I can hear all the moans and groans, but there are circumstances. Then that is a choice you are making, if you do not want to end something or change something then you don´t need to keep telling people or yourself about it. A change of attitude and approach is needed though. Keeping a positive attitude in these times when people are in “crisis” or “life is not the way it was”, is paramount, life is never going to be as it was, time moves on and changes are inevitable. If the whole world was in crisis then nobody would be making any money, and we know that is not the case. Adapt, apply and learn, you are never too old, or too late. People are living longer and better lives now than just a generation or two ago. Is it worth it if you are sad and miserable, if you are living in the past or waiting for somebody else to make you happy. Gratitude, attitude and open mindedness will be the tools of the generations to come, but there is no good reason why not to start now!!!! How many times have I got to tell you??????

Older eyes are susceptible to diseases such as glaucoma, macular degeneration and cataracts, which can be detected during an eye test. Early diagnosis can help prevent further damage in many cases. Growing potatoes This past February, even though my wife Susie and I were in warm Florida, I fell into a fit of the winter doldrums while watching Sam Champion on TV talking about a new winter snow storm dumping more ice and snow on Indiana. It distressed me no end to think of my friends and relatives battling that weather so, seeking relief, I grabbed Susie's hand and headed for a nearby garden store. While wandering the aisles filled with gardening equipment, I came across a book entitled The Vegetable Gardener's Bible by Edmund C Smith. The book contained lots of hints about growing champion vegetables in raised bed gardens. The full color photographs, illustrating beautiful rows of vegetables, reeled me in, hook, line and sinker. Forget that old flat garden.. From now on, my veggies would ride high on a bed of dirt brimming with organic fertilizers. When we returned to Indiana from Florida, I set about building raised beds in my 30year-old garden space. My first stop was the Mulch farm where I bought a ton of top soil liberally laced with compost and had it loaded on my utility trailer. As soon as I got the dirt home, I took a couple of pain pills and immediately began shoveling the dirt before the pills lost their effect and my arthritis kicked in. Sugar peas, beets and onions went in the ground before it started raining. A row of dirt, loosely packed, was practically begging me to let it grow potatoes. I hesitated for a moment; potatoes were still one of the few bargains at the grocery store. Why bother going to all that trouble and waste that precious garden space? I'll tell you why. For the same reasons that mountain climbers climb, marathon runners run, swimmers swim and bikers get all decked out in that colorful Spandex, that's why. And what's more, my parents raised Victory Gardens to help our country in the war effort. Why shouldn't I do the same? Feeling very patriotic, I stood tall, recited the Pledge of Allegiance and headed for the Giant Cox's Plant Farm. I asked Wayne, the proprietor, the same questions about potatoes that I ask him every year. My heart raced as I looked at the burlap bags filled with certified seed potatoes. I searched lovingly through the

bags, selecting what I perceived to be superior specimens of three potato varieties - Red Pontiacs, Irish Cobblers and Yukon Golds. Why so many different kinds? I went with the Pontiacs because, thanks to a picture in Mr Smith's Bible, I am also going to raise green beans for the first time in many years. There's nothing better than a mess of new potatoes and fresh green beans on a hot July evening. I was going to stop there but Susie intervened. "Let's get some of those Yukon Golds," she said. "Why?" "They make great baked potatoes, that's why." "And where did you hear that?" "I don't know. Good Housekeeping, maybe." "Russets make the best bakers," I told her, showing her the potato section in the plant catalogue. "I like the color of the Yukons." I couldn't argue with that so I filled a sack from a bag leaning on another Burlap Bag marked Irish Cobblers and memories of a recent St Patrick's day party flooded my mind. My mouth watered as I recalled that evening's corned beef brisket and boiled potatoes which prompted me to reach in that burlap bag as well. While I was picking out potatoes, Wayne was digging in his Farmer's Almanac to get the best days for planting. The Almanac recommended April 21 and 22, Holy Thursday and Good Friday, but at the time, that was still almost two weeks in the future. I didn't want to wait but Wayne and Susie convinced me that I should do what the Almanac said. I finally agreed and pro-

ceeded to ask Wayne my annual question about PH measurements. I can't believe I've been gardening for 30 years and still don't know my own soil's PH number. All of my friends know whether their soil is alkaline or acidic, but not me. I should have paid more attention in chemistry class. "No need to worry about PH," Wayne said, looking up from his catalog. "Just put a little 6-24-24 under the eyes and that will take care of any problems." God, I loved that kind of Farmer talk. I softly repeated '6-24-24', letting the numbers roll off my tongue like silk slides off Susie's shoulder. I picked up a 50-pound bag of the fertilizer and wrestled it into my cart but quickly put it back when I saw the price; 42 dollars. Good Lord. How many potatoes could we buy for 42 dollars? I quickly did some mental calculations; wow, turns out to be quite a few. Luckily, the plant farm sold the fertilizer by the pound so I bought 6 pounds of fertilizer and a soil PH tester. My soil number was 7.0, considered to be neutral be-

tween alkaline and acid, if you're interested in that sort of thing. Good Lord, my soil is just like me - can't make up its mind about anything. It was raining on Holy Thursday and the weatherman said it was going to rain all day on Good Friday, as well. I planted the potatoes in a light drizzle, mumbling under my breath at Wayne and Susie all the while. On the next dry day, the Blue Lake pole beans went in the ground. I constructed a trellis featured in the Vegetable Gardener's Bible for the beans; it's ecologically sound, made from brush and other natural, organic materials and would be right at home in my mom's Victory Garden. As I stood in the rays of the setting sun, I felt sure my mom and dad, not to mention Ma and Pa Kettle, were looking down from heaven, fiercely proud of my effort. I’ve been living in Spain for some years, but have now decided to return to the UK. Do I need to inform anyone before leaving? If you intend to return to the UK permanently, it is important to de-register properly with the Spanish authorities so that there is no confusion as to where you are a resident. Typically you should consider de-registering with the local town hall (‘Padrón’), with the Spanish National Police (Residencia) and your local Health Centre. You can de-register simply by going to the same offices you went to register. If you have worked in Spain, you can also ask for a record of your employment history in Spain. This is called a ‘Vida Laboral’ and can be obtained from the Seguridad Social website (www.seg-social.es) or in person at any main Seguridad Social office. I live in Spain and am expecting a baby. Can I register the birth with the UK, even if my baby is born in Spain? Yes, you can. The Consular section of the British Consulate-General in Madrid is able to register the birth of a British national provided the event took place in Spain. Registration is not compulsory, but it has the advantage of ensuring that a permanent record of the event is kept at the General Register Office in the United Kingdom. Certified copies of consular birth and death entries may also be obtained. Such certifi-

cates are produced in English. For more information, you can visit our website ukinspain.fco.gov.uk where you can get copies of the forms and information on how to apply. However, the most important thing to do is to register the birth at the Civil Registry Office nearest to the place of birth or residence, by one of the child's parents. This should be done in the first eight days following the child's birth. However, this period can be extended to 30 calendar days if there is a justified reason for the delay. If you miss this time limit with the Spanish authorities, you may have problems getting the birth registered. You also may have to start an administration procedure with the Spanish authorities, which will be long and expensive. This can affect your child's access to state health, nursery or school. I’ve heard that once I am over 80, I can get a free passport. Is this the case? If so, where should I send my application? You can apply for a free passport if you were born on or before September 2 1929. This applies to all British passport holders and is in recognition of all the sacrifices made by World War II veterans and civilians. If you were born before this date, you can call your nearest Consulate (in this case Alicante) and we will send you the correct form to fill in. However, please bear in mind that the passport takes a minimum of 10 weeks to process as it has to be sent to the UK; therefore you have to make sure you give yourself

plenty of time to get the application processed before you need to travel. If you were born after September 2 1929, even if you are over 80, you will have to pay for your passport and apply as normal.

Carte blanche for corruption

Q: I live in Spain but will going back to the UK this summer to visit. Do I need to take a European Health Insurance Card with me? Yes. When travelling out of your country of residence to another European country you should always take with you your blue European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). This card entitles the holder to access state-provided medical treatment that becomes necessary during their temporary stay. It is still recommended to have travel insurance as well though as the EHIC does not cover all costs, such as repatriation. In terms of applying for your blue European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), this will depend on where you live and how you access healthcare. If you are a UK resident you can apply online at www.ehic.org.uk or by calling 0845 606 2030. If you live in Spain and access healthcare through an S1 form (previously known as E121/E106/E109) you should call the Overseas Healthcare Team in the UK on 0044 191 218 1999 to apply for one. Otherwise, speak to your nearest INSS (Instituto Nacional de la Seguridad Social) office in Spain to see if you are entitled to a Spanish-issued one. Those who are greedy and corrupt will be sleeping easy in their beds this week. The reason? The message sent out by the electorate in the Valencia Region on Sunday was that allegations of corruption - however serious they may be - are not a problem. In the regional parliament, members of the governing Partido Popular (PP) face charges over the illegal financing of the party and the infamous Gürtel case. The regional president himself, Francisco Camps, is accused of receiving expensive suits and other gifts from the corruption network. No one has been found guilty over the allegations – it is likely to be some time before those who are accused have their day in court. However, even with these extremely serious charges hanging over the regional PP, they still won a landslide victory. In fact they picked up one more seat, bettering their result of 2007. The same has happened in the provincial parliament. Also run by the PP. Here the president José Joaquín Ripoll faces a number of charges over the rubbish collection contract scandal. Again these are allegations. But the prov-

Well first of all the price is much cheaper than I thought it would be, a return journey for two people will still work out at less than half that of a taxi, legal or illegal. I understand that the journey will take longer, but seeing as it is a one-stop express service it will not take a lifetime to get there. With the two hourly service it is easy to plan in advance and really reduce expenditure. Take a look at it this way, the amount that you save using the bus instead of a taxi, will many times be more than the cost of the flight itself. I will of course use it.

I don’t live in the area, but do work near the town centre. Regularly I get holidaymakers coming in asking me how to get to the airport. This is a great response to the needs of the residents and holidaymakers and could be good for tourism in the area as well. If I lived in the area I would definitely use the service. I travel solo a lot and these are real savings compared to getting a taxi. Money that could be spent on the holiday or excursion itself. Finally a good incentive for people to come to the area and a real selling point. Many people book their flights and holidays well in advance to benefit from discounts. If they are lucky, the savings using the bus could pay for or heavily subsidise the price of a flight.

There wasn’t even a protest vote. At a town hall level, in many municipalities, the results have followed the same pattern. Of the parties which have been embroiled in allegations of corruption or illegal building scandals, very few have been punished by the electorate. Take for example the former Socialist party (PSOE) mayor of Catral, José Rodrígez Leal. A total of 1,270 illegal homes were built in the municipality under his tenure. He was kicked out of the PSOE, but set up his own party. On Sunday they won three seats out of a possible 13. Does that mean that a quarter of the population of Catral hanker after the construction of more illegal homes? However, a couple of municipalities have bucked the trend. One of these is Polop where the PP had its majority wiped out. The fact that ex-PP mayor Juan Cano is accused of being involved in the killing of his predecessor, Alejandro Ponsoda appears to have caused consternation among the voters. Another is Orihuela. The Partido Popular has governed for decades and there have been a succession of scandals over the years. These started

with former mayor Luis Cartagena who was eventually jailed for stealing cash given to the town hall by an order of nuns. Then his successor José Manuel Medina faced a number of charges, although he has since been cleared in many of the cases. The current PP team which governed from 20072011 under Mónica Lorente has also been hit by allegations of corruption. Three councillors were arrested and charged over the Brugal rubbish affair last year, along with the provincial president. Then it was revealed last month that Sra Lorente and seven councillors had been charged with corruption and embezzlement of public funds. It appears the PP in Orihuela may now have paid the price over these allegations. They have lost their majority and the opposition parties are in a position to form an alliance to govern. Just a couple of municipalities which have bucked the trend. This will not be enough for the young protesters who are camping out in the streets to demonstrate against a political class and system which they say does not represent them. The election results will do nothing to restore their faith in a system which they see as corrupt and decadent. Sunday, May 22 will only encourage the 15-M protesters to stay in the plazas around Spain. For ever and a day.

Worryingly low incidence of eye tests for children revealed across the Costa Blanca

Scoliosis Scoliosis is an abnormal lateral curvature and rotation of the spine. It can be congenital or acquired, due to injury or disease. Some of the causes of scoliosis include wedging of the vertebral body, neuromuscular imbalances affecting the muscles of the trunk, and some are due to habitually misaligned postures due to impairments such as leg length difference, a visual loss, or a hearing loss. A musculoskeletal evaluation of the spine, which is done by observing the line of the spine during a forward bend from the standing position, will display any presence of scoliosis. If there is a structural curve, there will be some prominence on the convex side of the curve. The prominence will be on one side only if there is a single curve (c curve). In a double curve, or s-curve, as in a right thoracic, left lumbar curve, there will be a prominence on the right in the upper back and on the left in the lower back. The rotation of the spine will be evident in the positions of the rib cage or pelvis. For most people with scoliosis, the curves in the spine are functional, and do not become fixed or structural. A scoliosis and lateral pelvic tilt is common but often undetected and can cause compression of the articulating facet of the 5th lumbar vertebra on the high side of the pelvic tilt and in turn discomfort or pain in that area. Scoliosis is a problem of asymmetry. Stretching

of tight muscles may be appropriate, but increasing overall flexibility of the spine is not desirable. Increasing spinal flexibility may make the scoliosis susceptible to progression. A well balanced Pilates exercise programme with gentle movements will help to strengthen local and global stabilising muscles and help to restore symmetry. Worryingly low incidence of eye tests for children revealed across the Costa Blanca

In a survey conducted by Specsavers Opticas on the Costa Blanca to establish whether parents were taking their children to have their eyes tested, opticians were alarmed at the low incidence of those that were. Opticians recommend a yearly eye test for children from three years old, yet the survey revealed that in Torrevieja only 39% of all the respondents had taken their children to have an eye test with an optician. Worryingly, in Javea just 17% of children aged 6 – 12 years old have ever done so. This fact is even more surprising as 65% of the respondents there felt that poor eye sight could affect their children’s performance at school. Parents in Calpe performed better, with 67% of all respondents having taken their children to an optician for an eye test. Although this is still not as high as opticians would like, Calpe parents are leading the way compared to other towns surveyed in the Costa Blanca. Mike Stone, who is store director at Specsavers Opticas’ Calpe and Javea stores, commented “It’s great to see Calpe leading the way on the Costa Blanca with parents getting their children’s eyes tested, but I would like to see 100% of parents doing so. If you are concerned that there may be a problem with your child’s eyes, there are a number of tell-tale signs you can look out for: 1. Sitting too close to the TV 2. Rubbing their eyes repeatedly 3. Complaining of headaches 4. Becoming reluctant to read or look at small pictures or objects 5. Being clumsy 6. Squinting 7. WordPlay and You An international Writers' Forum founded here on the Costa Blanca in January 2010, WordPlay's local members meet at Maggies Bar in Playa Flamenca on the second Friday of each month at 09.30. For those further afield, there is the option of e-membership through the website. The purpose of the group is to encourage writers to write and then to get them read. To this end WordPlay publishes a monthly ezine, and has added a quarterly fiction ezine - The Story behind the Story - to its stable of products. An anthology of members' works, which will include all WordPlay competition winners, is planned for this month.

Keep Writing The world is your oyster (or lobster, if you listen to Delboy from 'Only Fools and Horses'). Never has this been truer for writers. Our recent articles have highlighted the plethora of opportunities available to us creative types. Today we discuss what is possibly the jewel in the crown - the pearl within the oyster. 'This week I had my first experience of CreateSpace,' says Ian, co-founder of WordPlay. 'It is phenomenal'. WordPlay is currently pub-

lishing an anthology of its members' work. WordPlay ShowCase is around 250 pages of emerging writing talent (another vehicle supporting WordPlay's primary purpose). This is a real book by real writers. So, how to publish? Traditional routes are virtually debarred unless you are already a 'name'. The book 'First Thriller' is a terrific opportunity for new writers within the thriller genre - but then it is edited and contains a short story by Lee Child, already an international best seller. Print self-publishing (formerly known as vanity publishing) can cost in the region of 1000 euros - plus the cost of the books. And then there is CreateSpace. Michael, WordPlay's other co-founder, has already acted as a consultant to publish via this route. He was Ian's guide. After a week of collating and editing, the whole anthology, including designing the cover - the whole book, in fact took a morning to format and submit for review. You, the writer, call the shots. It is reviewed for publishing (not content and editing) purposes. The review is emailed within 48 hours (in our case six!!), with inaccuracies of format or inconsistencies of basics (eg,

ISBN number, titling) highlighted for correction Once accepted by Create Space, a proof book is ordered for final perusal by the author and then actual publishing requested. And the cost? If you are tech savvy, and understand formatting, pdf conversion, creating .tiff files, etc. then the cost is time, effort, and the occasional frustration (we are talking technology, after all!). If you are not au fait with all of this, then using a consultant (such as WordPlay) to do this post editing work for you can cost as little as €100. CreateSpace is part of Amazon. Amazon - changing the face of not only reading, but also writing. The writer's world is indeed now their oyster. Farm those pearls. There are no more excuses for not getting that book out there. The only thing stopping you is …. You.

Worryingly low incidence of eye tests for children revealed across the Costa Blanca In a survey conducted by Specsavers Opticas on the Costa Blanca to establish whether parents were taking their children to have their eyes tested, opticians were alarmed at the low incidence of those that were. Opticians recommend a yearly eye test for children from three years old, yet the survey revealed that in Torrevieja only 39% of all the respondents had taken their children to have an eye test with an optician. Worryingly, in Javea just 17% of children aged 6 - 12 years old have ever done so. This fact is even more surprising as 65% of the respondents there felt that poor eye sight could affect their children's performance at school. Parents in Calpe performed better, with 67% of all respondents having taken their children to an optician for an eye test. Although this is still not as high as opticians would like, Calpe parents are leading the way compared to other towns surveyed in the Costa Blanca. Mijas Bowls Club's busy month

Less than 50% of parents in Fuengirola take their children for eye tests

By Sheila Graveling WHAT a busy month April has been this year with Easter being so late. The Winter Championships have just finished and two of our teams did so well that we won the Ladies Triples with Pam Cole, Dine Warn and Lynda Hall. It was a very good match to watch, they beat an excellent team from Lauro. We also won in the Men's Pairs with Don Smith and Kevin Blow beating Bill Gregory and Mike Dethridge from Benalmรกdena. Very well done to both teams - we are very proud of them. Now the winter birds are leaving and we are fewer in number for the summer but still going to enjoy all that the coast can offer in this warmer season. Our club stays open all year round and we have lots of events so look out for our news each month. We will go to our summertime bowling in the evenings from the beginning of June. Signs that your child is having difficulty with their vision As a parent, it can be difficult to spot if your child has a vision problem, as children have no way of knowing if what they see is any different from what others can see. Also, as very young children, they are not able to communicate what the problem is. If you are concerned that there may be a problem with your child's eyes, there are a number of tell-tale signs you can look out for: 1. Sitting too close to the TV 2. Rubbing their eyes repeatedly 3. Complaining of headaches 4. Becoming reluctant to read or look at small pictures or

objects 5. Being clumsy 6. Squinting 7.
