Downers Grove natives start Windy City Curling By ED MCMENAMIN emcmenamin@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – Not many years ago, curling seemed like an obscurity to Downers Grove native Matt Galas. The Windy City Curling club co-founder remembers when he first became acquainted with the sport where frenetic broom sweepers manipulate ice to help direct a sliding stone toward the target. One night in college, he returned home from a local Kansas bar, and the sport was relegated to the 2 or 3 a.m. slot during the 2002 Winter Olympics. “Me and my roommates were watching it, and we started looking up clubs in the area,” he said. “And there wasn’t anything, and we kind of forgot about it.” Four years later, now back in the Chicago area, he found himself staying up late again to catch the sport during the
Know More For information, visit www.windycitycurling.com 2006 Torino games. “I thought, ‘Hey, I have to try this now,’” he said. The closest curling club he could find was about 80 minutes away in Mendota, and he and his brother Jeff, along with about 20 friends made the trip to play. “From the moment we walked in the door there, it was something easy to fall in love with,” he said. “The community around curling is unbelievable. “No other sport do you hang out with your competitors before and after the games. In curling, once you’re done playing, you’re best friends. The winners buy the losers a drink and you commiserate.” There is that social aspect, colloquially known as “broom-
sticking” among curlers. But the sport itself also drew him, he said. Curling is often called “chess on ice” for the team strategy in sliding the stones to obstruct or knock the other team. “You’re always thinking three or four shots ahead, if not more, trying to outsmart your opponent,” he said. The game also is accessible to varying ages and physical ability. Each team consists of four players. One teammate slides a stone while two sweep, and the fourth member stands in “the house,” or target, and calls the shots. Everyone takes turns fulfilling each of the roles in a game. The goal is to be closer to the center of the target than the other team. “It looks easy; it’s kind of like golf,” he said. “Anybody can make the shots, anybody can play. But to do it consistently, and to do it at a high level, that’s where the skill

comes in.” Galas and the core group of other Downers Grove natives – his brother Jeff Galas and friends David Jamros and Jeff Sampson – continued to play regularly in Mendota before forming the Windy City Curling club in 2012. This April, the crew finally found a rink closer to home where it was able to rent ice time at Rocket Ice in Bolingbrook. “We have players from all over the Chicagoland area,” said Sampson, club co-founder and current president. “People are coming all the way from Chicago down to Tinley Park, even from Indiana on a weekly basis.” The club plays at 9:30 p.m. every Thursday. Dinner also is provided before the games by a rotating list of teams. For first-time players, Windy City Curling offers a learn-to-curl program every week. “We get you going,” Matt Galas said. “From that, sever-
al people sign up for the next league or future leagues.” The club has more than 60 members, and Galas said they hope to grow to between 150 and 200. “It is nice to expose people to a sport that they probably have never played before,” said co-founder and treasurer David Jamros. “The most refreshing thing is seeing all of the people who come to our learn-to-curls that leave with a smile on their face. Once you see that, you know you have done your job.” Eventually, Windy City Curling would like to find its own dedicated home where it doesn’t have to share ice time with other sports, Galas said. Long-term goals include working with schools to teach the next generation how to play. “I grew up playing sports,” he said. “I wholeheartedly believe that is what made me who I am today. Being able to provide that to the youth is a great thing.”

DENTAL CARE DURING THE WORK DAY Q: I brush and floss faithfully every morning and night. What can I do for my teeth during the work day? A: Along with scheduling regular visits to the dentist, maintaining a good regimen of dental care at home is one of the most important things you can do to protect your oral health. Whether it’s work or some other activity that keeps you busy during the day, here are some steps you can take to keep your mouth fresh and healthy during the day: Don’t snack on foods that cling to your teeth, like candy. Keep a toothbrush and some toothpaste at work, if possible, and brush after lunch. If brushing isn’t feasible, use a paper towel or napkin to wipe your teeth after lunch. Even that wiping will remove some plaque, bacteria and leftover food particles. Chew sugarless gum, if it’s appropriate in your daytime circumstance. Chewing gum stimulates production of saliva, which is a natural mouth cleaner. Drink plenty of water during the day, and particularly after eating. This, too, will help wash away the food particles that cavity-causing bacteria thrive on. If you drink fruit juices or soda during the day, use a straw to minimize your teeth’s contact with the acid in the drinks. Talk with your dentist about other steps you can take during the day to keep your mouth fresh and healthy.

DOWNERS GROVE – Almost 200 Illinois municipalities have not been able to find road salt next season, but Downers Grove appears to be set. The village has contracts with two vendors for a total of about 7,040 tons of salt. The larger contract procured through the state is for 5,040 tons at $55.35 per ton. The second contract, through DuPage County, is for 2,000 tons at $70.44, Downers Grove Public Works Director Nan Newlon said. Last year, the village had one contract through the state for 4,200 tons at $55.35 per ton. Salt contracts require the village to buy between 80 percent and 120 percent of the listed tonnage. According to an Associated Press report, the 195 Illinois cities and villages which have not been able to find salt contractors could end up paying twice the amount they paid last year,
if and when they find a provider. The extra salt purchased by Downers Grove this year will end up in the new, larger salt dome approved by the village council this summer. The village hopes to avoid last winter’s conundrum, when huge demand and frozen waterways, caused by the historically harsh winter, led to salt shortages in Downers Grove and the surrounding areas. The additional salt capacity is part of a wider ranging set of changes and improvements to the village’s snow operations plan recommended by staff in response to last winter’s service delays. “The one thing about having an exceptional service level is it creates expectations in terms of whats going to happen in all circumstances,” Mayor Martin Tully said. “There were some expectations that weren’t met because some adjustments

SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA DOWNERS GROVE – The Downers Grove Fire Department recently added five members to its Emergency Medical Services Bike Medic program, according to a press release. The Downers Grove Fire Department was the first fire department in Illinois to start a bike medic team in the early 1990s, according to the village. Through the years, the program has provided support for heavily attended local events such as Rotary Fest, the Bike Criterium and the Bonfield 5K, with a team of two para-

medics on specially equipped bikes. The department owns four of the bikes, each equipped with advanced life support equipment. Two of the bikes are used for primary response, and two are kept in reserve. These bikes, which carry approximately 30 pounds of equipment and medications, allow the paramedics to get through large crowds quickly and administer care. They provide basic first aid up to advanced life support prior to the arrival of an ambulance. The Downers Grove Fire Department Bike Medics are all certified paramedics.

due to the uneven stimulation to each ear. Auditory deprivation is even a larger problem. If only one ear hears and understands better, it can become the dominant ear. The ear without the hearing aid is deprived of stimulation. The ear with the hearing aid hears better, while the unaided ear no longer tries to hear. There are still times when audiologists fit only one ear with a hearing aid, such as when a medical problem prohibits it, or when the ear is completely devoid of hearing. However, if a hearing loss exists in both ears, fitting bothers with hearing

but only wore one hearing aid. The study concluded that the ability to hear tones decreased the same amount in each ear over time, but that the ability to understand words decreased significantly in only the ear without the hearing aid. This study suggests that both ears be fit with hearing aids as soon as possible after a hearing loss is diagnosed to prevent auditory deprivation. Since that time, numerous investigations and studies worldwide have supported the initial findings.
t is well known in the hearing healthcare community that if hearing loss goes untreated for too long, a phenomenon called auditory deprivation occurs. Auditory deprivation is a decrease in an ear’s ability to understand speech clearly.
Auditory Deprivation By Audrey G. Freeman, Au.D., Dr. of Audiology “fish” for “dish”, one possible cause may be auditory deprivation. The reversibility of auditory deprivation is a source of dispute among researchers; but one thing is clear, hearing aids have helped in preserving word clarity.
thought is that the brain gradually loses some its ability to process sound information because of a lack of sound stimulation. Another theory is that the brain adapts to the reduced sound levels.
The first study to document auditory deprivation was in 1984 by Silman and Silverman of City University of New York. The study followed hearing impaired adults who had an equal amount of hearing loss in both ears,
In the past, audiologists often fit people with only one hearing aid. Research over the years has shown that fitting only one hearing aid is a problem. An obvious difficulty is the inability to tell the direction of sound
aids is the route most often recommended by audiologists to achieve the best hearing quality. Recent hearing research supports the “use it or lose it” theory. Lack of sound stimulation may cause you not to hear clearly. Call your local audiologist (hearing specialist) to schedule a hearing test. Don’t put it off.

This data, provided by the Mainstreet Organization of Realtors, showed 52 single-family homes were sold in June, three less than in May, and 10 less than a year ago, a 16 percent decrease. The median sales price did increase this June compared to last June, although it showed a slight dip from the previous month. The price increased from $306,500 to $320,500, a 4.6 percent jump. May 2014’s figure was $349,900, 8.4 percent higher. The year-over-year numbers continued the trend from the previous month, when slightly less homes sold in Downers Grove compared to the same month in 2013, but the homes that did sell did so at a higher price, on average. In May 2013, 71 homes sold at a median price of $335,000. In Westmont, homes sales
decreased from May to June, while the median sales price increased slightly. The June data also showed this June performed worse than June of 2013 in terms of total homes sold, dipping from 22 to 15. But the median sales price is on the rise. The median price in June 2014 jumped to $252,000 from $245,000 in May 2014 and $247,500 in June 2013. Total home sales and median sale prices for Lemont in June were slightly down from last month and dipped further from June 2013. Fourteen homes were sold in Lemont in June. This is two less than in May and eight less than in June 2013. The median sale price for June was $308,750, a 5.1 percent decrease from May and a 14.9 percent decrease from June 2013. Although the total home sales in Bolingbrook decreased slightly from May to June, the market is remains hot. In Bolingbrook, 76 homes were sold in June, compared to 80 in May and 80 in June 2013.

Kelsey Resale Boutique owner eyes 4th storefront By ED McMENAMIN emcmenamin@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – Beverly Moran opened her third resale boutique, her first in Downers Grove, this winter, and is already looking at locations for her fourth, she said. The Downers Grove shop in the former Bead Heaven space, 5151 Main St., followed her first store, which opened in Glen Ellyn in 20011, and a second location in Hinsdale. All three now are named Kelsey Resale Boutique, after
Know More For information, visit kelseyresale.com. her daughter’s first name. She said her customers appreciate the boutiques’ pickiness when it comes to accepting consignees and the fact that the stores feel more like retail than resale. “I like things that are very current,” she said. “I don’t take anything dated, and they need to be a little bit trendier. And we
only take in-season.” She said she goes for items from medium- to high-end designers. Moran previously owned a painting and pottery business, but running a consignment shop, after a lifetime spent shopping in them, was ideal, she said. “It’s incredible for me,” she said. “I’ve always loved resale shopping, so doing it as a business is like being on vacation all the time.” Moran grew up in Downers Grove and graduated from
Downers Grove North High School, which made the village a natural fit when she was scouting a third location. The aesthetics of the downtown sealed the deal, she said. “I love the downtown feel,” she said. “I particularly liked that location because the wine bar right across the street, I know that’s a very busy place.” In Downers, she said the most popular items so far have been casual wear like jeans, as well as active wear. Shoppers have about 20 racks of clothes to
choose from, along with shoes, purses, accessories and jewelry in the 1,500-square-foot space. Moran said she thinks customer service is what allowed her business to expand to three locations in just three years. “We have a lot of devoted customers and consignees that really drive our business,” she said. “Our motto is ‘we are not your typical resale shop.’ When you come into our stores, they smell good. You don’t smell mold or smoke or anything like that. “It’s all about keeping the customers happy.”

Fighting trafficking in the foster care system For too many children in the foster care system, their lives have been filled with instability, abuse and neglect. Often these children are passed from home to home not knowing how long they will stay in one place or who they can trust. The psychological toll of such an environment makes it all too easy for human trafficking rings to target vulnerable foster care COMMUNITY youth and force them into VOICE what can only be described as Peter modern day slavery. That is why lawmakers, community Roskam leaders and law enforcement agencies are joining forces to prevent the estimated 104,000 children in foster care from becoming victims of physical and psychological abuse. Last month, I joined my colleagues in passing the bipartisan Preventing Sex Trafficking and Strengthening Families Act, which makes critical reforms to our foster care laws, working to identify those most vulnerable to predators and take concrete steps to protect these children from abuse. First, the bill increases the reporting requirements for foster parents and child welfare agencies, encouraging them to identify at-risk youth and develop new ways to ensure better information is provided to caseworkers assigned to these children. Our legislation also works to address current foster care policies that can make it difficult for children to participate in sports, sleep over at a friend’s house, obtain a driver’s license, or get a part-time job – all common rites of passage for kids making the transition into adulthood. Although well-intentioned, in some cases these strict rules can lead to a child becoming isolated and separated from family and friends, making them more vulnerable to victimization. The Preventing Sex Trafficking and Strengthening Families Act offers financial support and incentives for the adoption of foster children to families who otherwise couldn’t afford it. Providing these children more normalcy through social development activities and increasing their chance of adoption into a permanent family is key to not only protecting them from predators but setting up foster care children for long-term success. Through partnerships at the federal, state and local level, we can go after the criminals who commit this horrible crime, and protect the most vulnerable members of our society. These reforms are a huge step forward, and I will continue to press forward to stamp out the scourge of human trafficking in our communities.

Danny Spinuzza held a fundraiser basketball camp July 25 to raise money for pancreatic cancer research and awareness.
Thumbs up to recent Downers Grove South High School graduate Danny Spinuzza for organizing a weeklong youth basketball camp. Spinuzza lost his mother to pancreatic cancer when he was 10. To honor her memory and assist the fight against the disease, the 18-year-old donated all the raised funds to pancreatic cancer research. Thank you to Pam Kellam and Paul Giagnorio for four wonderful years as owners of Scarletti’s Italian Kitchen. After opening the popular downtown eatery in December 2010, the husband and wife owners closed the doors for good in June, explaining they want to spend more quality time together.

La Grange apartments bring transients
Village of La Grange, it’s your last chance to get things right regarding those apartments going up at Ogden Avenue and La Grange Road. Apartments bring transients. The city of Chicago’s looking to get rid of people. They come, they go from year-to-year. There’s gonna be Section 8. The children are perpetually behind in school because they’re moving year-after-year and missing class. That area was known for crime; transient people bring crime to apartments. At the very least, to make these condos – this quoting about the income level from 50 grand and up – that’s window dressing to get you to agree to it. And the planning commission

Don’t run over road kill
Anybody who runs over road kill in daylight, should have their license suspended for a month and made to clean up all the road kill, especially skunks. It’s obvious people are not paying attention as they’re driving. And with the skunks, if you hit that scent pack, they’re gonna smell.
Some residents should live in a dome
I’m responding to the letter writer about dogs peeing in their yard and how gross it is. They might wanna put a dome over their house. Because I have seen hundreds of squirrels, skunks, raccoons, possums, birds, rabbits and cats, to name a few, in people’s yards. Do they really think not one of those mammals pee in their yards? A dome would be good. And while we’re at it, while you’re out walking yourself, watch out for things coming out of trees because squirrels, skunks, raccoons and birds all live in trees. And you never know what will come out of them. So, I just thought I’d mention that, get a dome.

I’m calling about more green space in La Grange at Ashland and Harris avenues. There is a lot that used to be a funeral home that’s been empty for more than eight years. It’s now being zoned to possibly be a condominium complex within that neighborhood. There are numerous large condo buildings and apartment buildings, and we don’t need that. What we need in La Grange is green space. It could be a community garden. It could be a lovely, enhancing part of the village, as opposed to more buildings, especially when that large apartment complex is going to be built not too far away on the corner of Ogden Avenue and La Grange Road. So, let’s go for more green space in La Grange and petition the village to buy that lot and turn it into green space for the residents of La Grange. Thank you.

Downtown photo tour brings rail history to life By ED MCMENAMIN emcmenamin@shawmedia.com
DOWNERS GROVE – Downers Grove’s history is intertwined with that of the Burlington National rail line, which helped to shape the downtown and spur the early growth of the village. The connection is explored in the Downers Grove Historical Society’s photo tour this August, which brings vintage photographs to the windows of 34 downtown business. “A lot of people commuted to Chicago, even in the 1880s and 1890s,” Downers Grove Museum volunteer Carol Wandschneider said. “It also helped our farmers very early on, because the cattle was raised on the farms south of town. They could drive cattle to stock pens close to depot, and the train would take them to stock yards in Chicago. That would also apply to the crops.” The choice of this year’s tour topic could not have been better for Olive Tap owner Mario Olivi. He grew up in the Pullman neighborhood of Chicago, in the waning day’s of the namesake company’s production of luxury rail cars. Both his father and grandfather worked for Pullman, and his grandparents owned a restaurant 500 feet from the main gate, he said. He moved to the suburbs the day he

In addition to the historic photos posted in his window during the tour, he’s researched and designed his own historical display. “I feel like a kid,” he said. “I’m just having a ball with this.” His display focuses on the transition from steam to diesel, he said, along with historical curiosities, like
the special excursion trains occasionally offered by the railroad. In his research, he found documentation for one offer that took travelers from Downers Grove to San Francisco in 1879 for $8. He’s also displaying a collection of books and items about Pullman. Beginning Aug. 6, shoppers can visit the Olive Tap, 5143 Mochel Drive, and the other 33 business to view the photos and try to solve the four mystery photos printed on the backside of the free trifold tour pamphlet. Answers will be posted to downersgrovehistory.org. Photographs on display depict the original depot, the first Zephyr to travel the tracks, along with old steam-powered locomotives and the evolution of other related equipment spanning from 1865 to 1981. Keith Lipski of the Timberline Train Shop helped the Historical Society identify the make and model of the historic engines and other machinery shown in the photos, many of which came from the Downers Grove Museum and from the collections of John Mochel, Wandschneider said. Many other shots came from Ed Bunting, a former Downers Grove resident and professional photographer who donated all of his negatives.

needed to be made. “You learn from that and make adjustments going forward.” Last year, a shortage of snow plow drivers due to injuries, a shortage of functioning snow equipment, the regional salt shortage, the configuration of snow routes and the number of snowfalls greater than 4 inches all contributed to the service delays, according to the staff report.
Wed. Aug 6th thru Sun. Aug 10th
NEWS |
The village’s new plan for next winter includes using existing employees previously assigned to other tasks to help with snow plowing. The village also recently purchased a 5-ton truck that will be used for snow operations, in addition to the new salt dome. The village council also recently approved the construction of a larger salt dome for more storage. Staff also is proposing changes to the 10 snow routes to improve efficiency, according to the report.

SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA ELMHURST – Chris Nybo, R-Elmhurst, will replace Kirk Dillard of Hinsdale in the Illinois Senate’s 24th District. Nybo’s appointment comes after Dillard resigned from the state Senate on Sunday in order to accept his appointment as chairman of the Regional Transportation Authority, according to a news release. DuPage GOP Chairwoman Darlene Ruscitti and Lyons Township GOP committeeman James Falvey convened a committee, which appointed Nybo to be sworn in and fulfill the term. The overwhelming majority of the district is in DuPage County with a few precincts in Western Springs that define
the makeup of the nominating committee, the release said. Ruscitti, who represents more than 95 percent of the GOP weighted vote in the district, said she nominated Nybo because voters had already chosen him in the March primary. Nybo will be sworn in at 5 p.m. Wednesday at the Sunken Garden Memorial at Lombard Common Park. GOP Senate Leader Christine Radogno and Dillard will attend the ceremony along with several elected state officials, family and friends of the new senator, the release said. The 24th District includes all or parts of Hinsdale, Clarendon Hills, Willowbrook, Westmont, Darien, Downers Grove, Western Springs, Oak Brook, Oakbrook Terrace, Elmhurst, Lombard, Glen Ellyn, Wheaton and Lisle.

Restaurant reviews Pulled-pork sandwiches made in-house from slowcooked pork tenderloin are complemented by sweet potato fries.
Enjoy a game and meal at StoneHouse Pub LEMONT – I made a terrible mistake when I ordered my meal at StoneHouse Pub. Don’t get me wrong – the dish I ordered tasted fantastic. I really enjoyed every bite, the flavor, texture, quality of ingredients. It was all perfect. The server tried to warn me, “Are you sure that’s what you want to order?” I wasn’t really paying close attention like I should have. I was engrossed in conversation with my two dining companions, and had picked something absentmindedly. “Yes, I’m sure,” I said. This is a great example of why diners should always listen to their servers. The strangest part of all? I could see myself ordering it again. And regretting it again. The stuffed burger at StoneHouse Pub in Lemont is probably the largest sandwich I’ve ever seen, aside from ridiculous eating competitions on TV. It’s billed as three-quarters of a pound of Angus beef burger, stuffed with the diner’s choice of two ingredients. I chose American cheese and onions. I guess it hadn’t really registered consciously exactly how big that was going to be when I ordered it, but I was certainly brought back to reality when it was delivered. You know how burger commercials on TV make their sandwiches look impossibly tall, but then you order one at a fast-food joint and it’s about a centimeter thick? This was the impressive TV version, except with a high-quality bun, fresh tomato slices, and some of the best-tasting beef patties I’ve ever tried. Knowing that the server had questioned the wisdom of my order, and feeling like I’d be in for some ribbing if I failed to consume the whole thing, I resolved right then that I would not leave Stone-

House Pub without finishing this behemoth. While I was working my way through three meals’ worth of cheeseburger, my companions were enjoying much more reasonable dinners. One had the pulled pork sandwich with sweet potato fries, and the other went for the cod fish sandwich, a deepfried filet served with lettuce, tomato and onion. They were both well-pleased by their orders. We were fortunate to be at StoneHouse on the night of a major sporting event, and the pub filled up over the course of our time there with fans enjoying the convivial atmosphere. As the only sports fan among our trio (sports and overeating go together, right?), I was caught up in the enthusiasm. This is clearly a great place to see a game. For an eatery that doesn’t put on airs or claim to be a fine dining establishment, StoneHouse, nevertheless, clearly takes the food part of its business seriously. There were wraps, salads, pizza, baby back ribs, tacos, baked tilapia and a variety of items on the menu when we visited. As the evening wore on, I became less and less an active participant in our group’s conversation, as I focused on the task before me. My taste buds still wanted more, but my stomach was starting to

The stuffed burger at StoneHouse Pub lets you pick any two ingredients to go between the patties. It’s billed as three-quarters of a pound of Angus beef. StoneHouse Pub in Lemont is a great place to watch a sporting event, to have dinner with friends, or to relax with a drink after a long day. protest. By the time I finished off the last few bites, I had become well-acquainted with the concept of the Pyrrhic victory – I may have won, but I didn’t particularly feel like a winner in terms of restraint. So learn from my exam-
ple – you can get a great meal at StoneHouse Pub, but if you order the stuffed burger, you’d better be prepared for a challenge. Or maybe cut the burger in half and take a portion of it home. That would’ve been a really good idea.

Q&A
By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com Doug Diedrick knows a lot about winning, having been a member of state title-winning football teams with Montini in 2009 and 2010. The Woodridge native, who racked up five tackles in the 2009 title game and seven stops as a senior in 2010, matriculated at Northwestern as a preferred walkon as was part of a 10-win team in 2012. Currently a superback for the Wildcats, Diedrick is a newly minted scholarship player who is prepping for his junior season in Evanston. He recently spoke with Suburban Life sports editor Jason Rossi about making the jump from high school to college football, his preparation for this season and about playing for iconic Northwestern head coach Pat Fitzgerald. Rossi: What did you do in the offseason to get as ready as possible for the upcoming campaign? Diedrick: I was in the early morning workout group, lifting at 5:30 in the morning. Those were as good of workouts as we’ve had. Then we’d do an hour, hour-and-ahalf of running, speed work and agility drills. It was the same stuff we’ve been doing in the past, we just did it more often. I definitely feel like I’m ready for the season.

Northwestern’s Doug Diedrick returns a kickoff in a game against Illinois last season. The Woodridge native and Montini graduate is looking to have a big impact this fall during his junior season.
Rossi: As a team, you definitely had some close losses last year (two overtime losses and two others by three points or less). Are you and your teammates using that as motivation? Diedrick: Everyone is motivated. We know we lost a couple games we definitely could have won, but we feel like we can bounce back if we can find a way to finish games strong. If we can do that, we feel things will work out for us better this year.

Rossi: What’s it like making the jump from high school to college football? Diedrick: It’s definitely a big jump. You have more responsibility because you’re on your own and you have to make decisions yourself. But it’s also fun because you can improve and you can show your teammates how your hard work can pay off. Rossi: Do you think playing at Montini helped get you ready for the college game? Diedrick: Big Ten, playing at the college level, it’s definitely a huge step, but playing at Montini definitely prepared me. The knowledge that I gained from my coaches in high school, I feel like that was as good as any high school around. Rossi: What’s it like playing for a guy like coach Fitzgerald? Diedrick: He’s an unbelievable coach. He’s a player’s coach. He’s been through it, so he gets it. He knows what we’re going through. He’s a great motivator and a great guy to be around. Rossi: What are some of your personal goals this season? Diedrick: I know my role as a fullback and special teams player, and I want to take advantage in practice, earn my spot on special teams again and try to find my way on to the field on offense. Rossi: Is there one home game you’re really looking forward to this season? Diedrick: I think Wisconsin will be a big one. They got the best of us last year, so I think that will be a fun game.

Jack Allen
Aaron Bailey
Tommy Schutt
Austin Teitsma
COLLEGE: Michigan State HIGH SCHOOL: Hinsdale Central YEAR: Junior POSITION: Offensive lineman Allen enters this fall slated to start for the third year in a row. After redshirting his first year on campus in 2011, Allen has played in 25 games with 24 starts since 2012. All but five of those starts have come at center, where he is expected to play this season. The Spartans are defending Big Ten champions, and Allen is one of three players who started on the offensive line in Michigan State’s Rose Bowl win against Stanford that are slated to return.
Michigan State ■ Brian Allen, OL, Hinsdale Central
COLLEGE: Illinois HIGH SCHOOL: Bolingbrook YEAR: Sophomore POSITION: Quarterback Bailey, listed at 6-foot-2, 225 pounds, used his size, speed and overall athleticism to get on the field in his first year on campus. He played in nine games, being mostly used as a goal-line quarterback. Bailey ran for three touchdowns and passed for one more, all from 10 yards or less. Overall, he ran for 83 yards on 20 carries and was 2-for-5 for four yards through the air. Nathan Scheelhaase, a four-year starter at quarterback, is gone, but Wes Lunt, a highly touted transfer from Oklahoma State will battle for playing time with Bailey and fellow local product Reilly O’Toole.
Indiana ■ Ben Bach, CB, Wheaton Warrenville South ■ Nick Campos, P, Wheaton Warrenville South ■ Nile Sykes, LB, Montini (Oak Park) Minnesota ■ Andrew Harte, K, Montini (Downers Grove) Iowa ■ Colin Goebel, OL, Naperville North (Lisle) ■ Jaleel Johnson, DL, Montini (Lombard) Purdue ■ Will Colmery, DE, Nazareth (Western Springs) ■ Grant Ellington, LS, Nazareth (La Grange) Wisconsin ■ Thad Armstrong, QB, Wheaton Warrenville South
COLLEGE: Ohio State HIGH SCHOOL: Glenbard West YEAR: Junior POSITION: Defensive line Schutt is a two-year letter winner for the Buckeyes and has played in 17 games thus far in his collegiate career. He missed the first six contests last season due to injury but ended up playing in six games, registering three tackles and half of a sack as the Buckeyes finished third in the country with 42 sacks last season. As a freshman, the 6-foot-2, 300-pounder saw action in 10 games.
COLLEGE: Illinois HIGH SCHOOL: Glenbard South YEAR: Senior POSITION: Defensive line After playing in seven games as a redshirt freshman and all 12 contests as a sophomore, Teitsma earned a starting role last fall at defensive tackle. The 6-foot-2, 290-pounder finished sixth on the Illini with 53 tackles and also added 5 ½ tackles for loss, one forced fumble and three quarterback hurries. He tied a career high with eight tackles against Northwestern in the final game of the season.
COLLEGE: Northwestern HIGH SCHOOL: Lyons Township YEAR: Sophomore POSITION: Cornerback/kick returner Harris’ first game action came on special teams, both on kickoffs and kick returns. With Venric Mark injured for most of the season, Harris became the Wildcats’ primary kickoff returner. He took 21 kicks for 484 yards, including a 47-yard return against Western Michigan. As a cornerback, Harris started the last five games of the season, totaling 36 tackles and being named to ESPN.com’s Big Ten All-Freshman team. He was one of just two true freshmen to play last season for Northwestern.
Reilly O’Toole
COLLEGE: Illinois HIGH SCHOOL: Wheaton Warrenville South YEAR: Senior POSITION: Quarterback Entering his fourth and final year with the Illini, O’Toole has seen action behind center in each of his first three seasons. As a junior, he played in six games, completing 12-of-16 passes for 141 yards and a touchdown while also rushing for 34 yards. O’Toole started twice as a sophomore, finishing with 564 yards and six touchdowns that year, after taking part in 10 games as a freshman.
Kyle Prater
Dan Vitale
Jordan Walsh
Jordan Westerkamp
COLLEGE: Northwestern HIGH SCHOOL: Wheaton Warrenville South YEAR: Junior POSITION: Superback In just two seasons for the Wildcats, this WWS graduate already has carved out quite a solid career for himself. After receiving playing time as a true freshman, Vitale started all 12 games in 2013 as a superback (a combination fullback and tight end). Catching at least one pass in every contest, the incoming junior finished third on Northwestern with 34 receptions for 382 yards, which included a five-catch, 101yard performance against California. He also hauled in three touchdowns.
COLLEGE: Iowa HIGH SCHOOL: Glenbard West YEAR: Junior POSITION: Offensive line After seeing spot duty and playing in seven games in 2012, Walsh ascended to a starting position last fall and was entrenched at right guard for all 13 contests. The 6-foot-4, 290-pounder helped the Hawkeyes total nearly 500 yards of offense in each of the team’s first two games of the 2013 season while also playing a role in Iowa rushing for over 200 yards in five straight games to begin the 2013 campaign.
COLLEGE: Northwestern HIGH SCHOOL: Proviso West YEAR: Senior POSITION: Wide receiver The USC transfer has struggled to make his mark in two seasons at Northwestern. In the past two years, he has combined for 19 receptions and 113 yards without catching any touchdowns. Entering his senior season, Prater is hoping to match the expectations placed on him out of high school. His 59 yards last season ranked ninth on the team, but three of the players who finished ahead of him were seniors.
COLLEGE: Nebraska HIGH SCHOOL: Montini YEAR: Sophomore POSITION: Wide receiver Westerkamp made a big impression as a redshirt freshman for the Cornhuskers. He played in all 13 games and started the Gator Bowl win against Georgia. He was third on Nebraska with 283 receiving yards and fourth in receptions with 20. He also had 19 punt returns for 51 yards. Westerkamp’s only touchdown came against Northwestern on a 49-yard Hail Mary on the last play of the game to give the Huskers the win. This fall, he could see play a bigger role in the offense as the second-leading wide receiver among returners.
