New Lenox Man Returns to Active Lifestyle After Robotic Knee Replacement Surgery at Silver Cross Hospital Last year Craig Eckert of New Lenox, who also happens to be a Silver Cross Hospital volunteer, experienced terrible bouts of pain in his right knee. “Daily activities were becoming difficult; one day I was walking the dog and I couldn’t make it back to the house due to the pain. That’s when I knew I had to see a doctor and get this resolved,” said the 65-year-old Eckert. The most common cause of knee pain in older adults is osteoarthritis, a degenerative joint disease that causes the deterioration of joint cartilage and surrounding bone in the knees. When osteoarthritis of the knees becomes severe, normal activities like walking or going up stairs become painful or nearly impossible. Eckert’s primary doctor referred him to Rajeev Puri, M.D., orthopedic surgeon with Oak Orthopedics. Dr. Puri specializes in robotic knee replacement surgery at the Midwest Institute for Robotic Surgery at Silver Cross. “When a patient presents with knee pain, it’s important to get a proper diagnosis and rule out if the problem is originating from issues in the hips or back. After reviewing the patient’s health history and performing a physical exam, it may be necessary to order tests such as X-rays or scans,” stated Dr. Puri. Rajeev Puri, MD
"I prefer to offer conservative treatment options first for knee pain such as home exercises, physical therapy, bracing, medications or injections. If these methods are not successful, I will discuss surgical options such as a partial or total knee replacement, expected outcomes and rehabilitation,” said Dr. Puri.
Robotic Technology Used in Knee Replacement The Midwest Institute for Robotic Surgery at Silver Cross offers Mako™ robotic-arm assisted surgery for partial knee replacement, total knee replacement and total hip replacement surgery. “The MakoTM surgical equipment has the ability to map out the procedure beforehand and size the implant perfectly by using the patient’s CT scan. The device simulates how the knee will move and act once the implant is in place. This technology can perform a ‘rehearsal’ before the surgery begins, giving the surgeon an opportunity to make adjustments either before or during the knee replacement surgery,” said Dr. Puri.
Craig Eckert With the assistance of the Mako™ robot, the orthopedic surgeon replaces the areas of the knee damaged by arthritis with an implant made up of metal and plastic parts. This implant will cap the ends of the bones that form the knee joint. "I participated in physical therapy after my partial knee replacement - five weeks after my surgery, Dr. Puri said I could return to playing golf! It was such a relief to return to my daily activities without knee pain anymore,” said Eckert.
“I was able to go home the day after my surgery and experienced very little discomfort afterward." As for volunteering at the same hospital that cared for him during his knee surgery, Eckert said “I am so thankful how the hospital staff cared for me, from Dr. Puri and his surgical team to all the nurses and staff at Silver Cross Hospital – everyone was just fantastic!” For more information about robotic-assisted joint replacement, visit midwestroboticsurgery.org

Experts at Silver Cross: Closing a Hole in the Heart using Catheter Technology It’s the morning of July 15, 2019, and 56-year-old Kevin Platt wakes up with tingles in his right arm. He shakes it off thinking he slept wrong and gets ready for work at an area car dealership where he’s a mechanic. Kevin drives himself, but when he gets to work, he notices he can’t do the things he usually does, like punching into the time clock and typing on his computer. “Nothing made sense,” he remembers.
Dr. George Aziz
Dr. Hong Jun Yun
Kevin’s co-worker took notice and drove him to the nearest hospital where he was diagnosed with a stroke. Doctors suspected an irregular heartbeat or atrial fibrillation, a leading risk factor for stroke, and fitted him with a heart monitor that he wore for four weeks. He next met with interventional cardiologist Dr. Hong Jun Yun and learned he had a hole in his heart, clinically known as a patent foramen ovale or PFO.
“It’s likely Kevin was born with this heart defect,” said Dr. Yun. “During fetal development there’s a small flap-like opening that separates the right and left chamber of the upper heart. Normally, that closes after birth, but in Kevin’s case it didn’t.”
About Patent Foramen Ovale PFO is actually fairly common, with nearly 25 percent of the population having the condition. But most don’t know it, and the majority of the time, it doesn’t cause any health problems. However, the condition may play a role in migraine headaches, and it increases the risk of stroke and transient ischemic attack.

“Many times, a TIA or stroke is the first sign of PFO,” he added. It can occur because a blood clot or solid particles in the blood can move from the right side of the heart to the left through the PFO opening, travel to the brain and cause a stroke.
Dr. Yun and interventional cardiologist Dr. George Aziz collaborated together on Kevin’s case and recommended a transcatheter PFO closure procedure—the very first one performed at Silver Cross. “We insert the catheter into a vein in the leg and Kevin Platt guide it up through the vessel all the way to the heart,” Dr. Aziz said. “Once there, we’re able to feed the device through the catheter and plug the hole in his heart.”
Transcatheter PFO closure procedure
Transcatheter closure of a PFO is a far less invasive procedure than open heart surgery and causes less downtime for the patient.

Calcification in the coronary arteries is the earliest indicator of heart disease. The good news is that calcium artery scoring at Silver Cross can predict heart disease long before symptoms even start. Calcium artery scoring is a quick, painless exam that uses high-speed CT scanning to measure calcium deposits in your heart. It's ideal for men over age 45 and women over age 55 who smoke, have high blood pressure, high cholesterol or a family history of premature coronary artery disease.

Recognize signs of heart attack in women Many people are familiar with the image of a heart attack sufferer clutching his or her chest or feeling surprising, tingling sensations in his or her left arm. While those symptoms are common, heart attacks can produce a wide array of symptoms, and some of them may actually be much less apparent than chest pain or tingling in the left arm. That’s especially so for women. The organization Go Red for Women, which highlights women’s heart health during the month of February, advises that many symptoms women can experience when suffering from heart disease may be overlooked or misunderstood as signs of less threatening conditions. However, jaw pain, nausea, pressure, and sweating all may be indicative of a heart attack. A failure to recognize that and act quickly could prove fatal. The American Heart Association says that heart disease is the foremost killer of women in the United States. The Heart and Stroke Foundation says heart disease and stroke kill 31,000 women in Canada annually. Despite those figures, many women are unaware of the threat of heart disease and its symptoms. Heart attack occurs when blood flow to the heart is blocked by a buildup of a substance called plaque in the coronary arteries. Heart attack can strike any woman, though women who deal with high stress, are overweight or are heavy smokers are at the greatest risk. Symptoms of heart attack Symptoms of heart attack in women generally are more subtle than in men. These can include but are not limited to: • shortness of breath as though you just ran a marathon • a feeling of a squeezing rope tied around the upper back • dizziness • lightheadedness or actual fainting • unusual fatigue • neck, jaw, shoulder, upper back, or abdominal discomfort • indigestion • perspiration
How heart attacks are different for women Women tend to have blockages not only in their main arteries, but in the smaller ones that supply blood to the heart,. This is a condition called coronary microvascular disease, says the Mayo Clinic, and it may be why symptoms are more vague and not as apparent in women as they are in men. Women also can have symptoms while resting or even when asleep, and emotional stress can trigger heart attack symptoms in women. A woman’s risk for heart disease increases if she has diabetes, has experienced mental stress or depression, smokes, has gone through menopause, has had complications during a pregnancy, has an inflammatory disease, and/or is physically inactive. Women of all ages should take heart disease seriously and schedule a check-up with a doctor to discuss risk and heart health. Women who suspect or notice any symptoms of heart attack should not hesitate to call for help. If you suspect you are having a heart attack, call 9-1-1 immediately; do not drive yourself. Women can learn more about heart disease at www.heart.org.

Don’t Let the Flu Get You
G
etting the flu shot is the number one way to stay healthy and keep the flu away. But, in addition to the vaccine, there are several other steps you can take to keep you and your family safe this flu season. The following tips are provided as part of Riverside Healthcare’s ongoing commitment to the health of the communities served. 1. Wash your hands often. This is one of the most important things you can do to keep from getting sick and prevent spreading germs. 2. When washing your hands, use soap and warm water and scrub all surfaces for 15 seconds before rinsing. 3. If soap and warm water are not available, use alcohol-based hand gel to disinfect your hands. Rub the gel into your hands until they are dry. 4. Cough or sneeze into a tissue and throw it away immediately. 5. Stay home if you are sick to prevent coworkers from catching your illness. Keep your distance from others who may be coughing or sneezing. 6. Get plenty of sleep, exercise regularly, eat nutritious foods, manage stress and drink plenty of fluids. Flu Got You? Physician experiences knee pain relief through special rehab technique
Dr. Peter Roumeliotis, internal medicine physician at Morris Hospital, knows firsthand about the benefits of a specialized rehabilitation technique that relieves pain associated with scar tissue and adhesions.
F
or Morris Hospital internal medicine physician Dr. Peter Roumeliotis, keeping in shape took a turn for the worst when he injured his knees while exercising on a rowing machine. “I overdid it, and I strained both knees,” Roumeliotis said. “My left knee in particular was very painful.” He tried treating his knees with rest, ice and anti-inflammatories to no avail. Even a steroid shot in the most affected joint – his left knee – didn’t help. His orthopedic doctor recommended physical therapy. At the Diagnostic & Rehabilitative Center of Morris Hospital, Roumeliotis was treated with a therapy he had not heard of before. It’s called the Graston technique, and it is a specialized type of rehabilitation that detects and treats areas of scar tissue (adhesions) in muscles, tendons and ligaments, thus reducing pain and increasing range of motion. “I told them, whatever it takes,” Roumeliotis said. “I’d been dealing
with this pain for months. I was limping, I couldn’t climb stairs, and going downstairs was even worse.” Several Morris Hospital physical and occupational therapists are certified in the Graston technique, which involves using a set of gently curved stainlesssteel instruments that allow therapists to detect areas of soft tissue adhesions and manually “smooth them out.” “The tissues in our body usually move smoothly against each other,” says Morris Hospital physical therapist Shannon Gambon. “When we have an injury, our body repairs the damage as quickly as it can with scar tissue.” However, that scar tissue isn’t necessarily aligned with neighboring tissues and can cause pain or tightness, Gambon explains. “When we use these tools, we can break up the scar tissue and encourage the tissue to realign in the right direction,” says Gambon. The Graston technique can be used to treat a wide range of issues, including
achilles tendonitis, plantar fasciitis, neck and back strains, carpal tunnel syndrome, tennis elbow, trigger finger, hamstring injuries, hip pain, fibromyalgia and caesarean scars. Roumeliotis’s knees responded immediately to the Graston treatment. It took only one or two sessions for his right knee to heal and around eight sessions for his left knee to go from a pain level of 9 down to a 2. “The pain was significantly better,” he said. “This technique really, really helped. During the treatment, I could almost feel the tight tissue breaking loose.” Since being treated, Roumeliotis has referred several of his own patients for Graston treatment. He gives kudos to the team who treated him and his patients. “Morris Hospital has a phenomenal group of physical and occupational therapists,” he said, “and they offer so many different treatments.” A physician’s order is required for rehabilitation services.
