Abigail Women’s Center — Vital Community Resource For more than 20 years, Abigail Women’s Center has served as a vital community resource providing free and confidential pregnancy services. In 2020-2021, the center provided more than 800 client services including pregnancy tests, ultrasounds and more than 324 classes to discuss topics on pregnancy and parenting, said Executive Director Betty Pappas, R.N. Under the supervision of Medical Director Dr. David Scholl, the center is able to provide free and confidential services including pregnancy testing and verification of a pregnancy, OB ultrasounds including 3D and 4D ultrasounds. In addition to services, there is a large boutique filled with baby and toddler necessities and accessories, including gently-used equipment and clothing. Parents are able to select items from the boutique through the Earn

While You Learn Program, Bright Course, a series of in-person and online classes to help new mothers and fathers learn about pregnancy, nutrition and newborn care. Families do not need to be enrolled in the classes to access baby and toddler supplies from the boutique. At Abigail Women’s Center, the staff provides compassionate care, practical help and accurate information to those facing pregnancy decisions. Abigail Women’s Center is not supported through local, state or federal government funding. These services are made possible through the generous donors who support the clinic. The monetary donations for the clinic and the donations for the boutique directly support families in the Mendota area and throughout LaSalle, Bureau, Putnam and Lee counties. City of Mendota — Sewer updates nearing completion Work is nearing completion on a three-phase project to update and replace aging sewer equipment in Mendota. Phase 2 was completed on Oct. 26 with the arrival of the new lift pump station. The pre-fabricated building arrived in town by semi-truck and was hoisted into place with a large crane. The building will serve as the Motor Control Center, providing the electrical controls for the automated lift station that ensures waste water travels to the waste water treatment. The prior lift station was originally installed in the late 1960s with renovations in the mid 1990s, explained Public Works Director Tim Kimrey, who is overseeing the project. The installation of the new system provides an upgraded system and houses a backup power generator and should prevent sewage backups in residences in the 3rd Ward. The multi-phased system also includes more than 1,500 feet of new 12-inch force main. The final phase in the upgrades is on target for completion before the end of 2021 and includes eliminating the old lift station. “We specialize in engine building and performance,” Andy said.

The shop is open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. in order to accommodate the needs of their customers who may need their trucks repaired in time for work the next day. “We stay until it’s done if they need the truck,” John said. “We cater to the customers.” A lot of the business has been word-of-mouth from truck owners whether they’re in Wisconsin, Michigan, Chicago or the Illinois Valley. Wasmer Funeral Home In 2019, Wasmer Funeral Home opened its new ADA-approved facility and made a name change from Schwarz Funeral Home, which had been in business continuously since 1885. Though a shift in location and name, the same individualized care and attention is given to all our families.

Nightengales Thrift Shop, a Non-Profit 501-C, and the Trinity Health Care Of Mendota Clinic (THM) are located at 708 Jefferson St. in Mendota. Both are dependent on volunteers to run the thrift shop and help people with medication prescriptions and medical supplies. Nightengales accepts donations of clothing, furniture, household furnishings, jewelry, medical equipment and supplies. Mendota home to North America’s largest flour mill North America’s largest flour mill — built from the ground up in one project — continues to proudly reside in Mendota. The Archer Daniels Midland Flour Mill can produce more than 3 million pounds of flour per day (30,000 cwts to be exact) and employs 30-40 people. The facility, for which construction began in June 2017 and was completed in 2018, can mill spring, winter and soft wheat varieties plus two types of whole wheat. Production started around Aug. 1, 2018. Why did ADM choose Mendota for the mill? ADM, one of the world’s largest agricultural processors and food ingredient providers, already had an existing ADM grain transfer facility in Mendota with a rail loop initially constructed by Fasco Mills before ADM bought the local company in 2007. However, ADM had an aging facility in the Chicago area and the company

needed a new location to better serve its customers, while Mendota’s strong workforce would provide the company with the employees needed to

be able to make the highest quality flour. ADM is a proud Mendota business and supporter of the Mendota area as its

actively involved in community events like the Mendota Sweet Corn Festival and ag-related projects across the region.

STRONG GROWTH AT STARVED ROCK WOOD PRODUCTS LEADS TO MORE JOBS IN MENDOTA AND A STUNNING NEW SHOWROOM IN GLENVIEW, IL. This has been a landmark year for Starved Rock Wood Products, one of Mendota’s fastest growing companies. With business booming, the company has added an extra 45 local positions to its workforce this year, with more expected in 2022. We want them to understand who they will be working with on this important project.” On entering the showroom, the first thing you see is not a kitchen but a wrap-around media area where the Starved Rock experience is brought to life. With over 500 different door styles and finishes to choose from, the customers will find exactly what they had in mind when they first walked in. And while grown-ups are playing at designing kitchens, kids are invited to come along and enjoy their own play area in the showroom.
