This magazine is our annual look at the local business community. We give local businesses the opportunity to have an article written so they can give you, the readers, an in-depth look into their business. Please take the time to look through this publication and let these businesses know you saw their ad or article. These businesses and their employees are the lifeblood of our community and now more than ever they need your support. Every dollar you spend with a local business comes back into our community. We encourage your feedback. If you have ideas on how we can improve this magazine or any of our other publications, please feel free to reach out to me. Fighting for the injured
Schweickert Ganassin Krzak Rundio, LLP (“SGKR”) is a personal injury and workers’ compensation law firm headquartered in Peru, with offices in Ottawa, Morris and Chicago dedicated to protecting the rights of injury victims and getting them results. SGKR was voted the top personal injury firm in North Central Illinois in the Studstill Media “Best of North Central Illinois” poll the past two years. “We are honored to receive this recognition from our community,” said partner Michael Krzak. “We will continue to maintain our strong work ethic when fighting for justice for injured Illinois citizens. Our lawyers are dedicated to providing trusted and reliable legal services to those who have been wrongfully injured. We believe that anyone who is injured has the right to be made whole again and to be treated with dignity and respect. That principle drives our lawyers to work hard every day to look out for and serve our clients’ interests in the best manner possible. For decades, we have been standing up for the rights of hard working people in North Central Illinois. Legal matters can get complex. We are here to communicate with and guide our clients through the process.” This past year, Krzak settled a case involving injuries sustained by a resident of the Illinois Valley in an automobile accident for $2.2 million and a truck accident case for $9.2 million in Chicago. SGKR grew from Schweickert & Ganassin, a full-service law practice that provided decades of service in personal injury and workers’ compensation cases under longtime partners Douglas Schweickert and Scott Ganassin. Michael Krzak, who has represented death and injury victims in major aviation crashes, truck crashes, train derailments, automobile collisions and other transportation incidents in Chicago and throughout the world, and Matthew Rundio, who has successfully pros-

Leynaud Law Group LLC in Peru: Premier Attorney in the Illinois Valley
For more than 38 years George G. Leynaud of Leynaud Law Group, LLC has been fighting for his clients’ rights in the Illinois Valley and surrounding areas. It’s what makes him a top personal injury and criminal defense lawyer in the Illinois Valley, standing up for individuals and their families. George has been a lifelong resident where he resides with his wife Patti and raised and educated his 2 children in our community. “I believe that having quality and experienced representation does not only exist in big cities, like Chicago, let alone, areas similar to Rockford, Bloomington or Peoria.” Leynaud said. “I am proud to be a lawyer who has advocated for the rights of the injured. I am proud to be a lawyer who has helped numbers of families cope with the effects of personal injury issues, especially, those involving a wrongful death. Most importantly, I am proud that I have helped my clients recover fair and just compensation for the physical and emotional damages they have incurred.” Leynaud’s practice in-
cludes personal injury, wrongful death, nursing home negligence and abuse, uninsured and underinsured motorist cases, mediation, workers’ compensation and medical malpractice. In addition to his personal injury practice he has achieved great success in criminal felony cases, driving under the influence and other traffic offenses. Since his early years George continues to handle real estate transactions and business litigation. From simple issues to complex cases, Leynaud can provide invaluable counsel and support to his clients. “As a top personal injury lawyer, pursuing justice when it matters most is what motivates me to fight for my clients,” Leynaud said. Unytite, Inc. — 100% American-made structural fasteners Ground Zero (New York), Allegiant Stadium (Las Vegas), and Wrigley Field (Chicago) are just a few examples where Unytite, Inc.’s 100% American-made structural fasteners have been installed over the last 32 years of manufacturing in the Illinois Valley. Although most known for the high-quality structural nuts and bolts used around the US, Unytite also manufactures parts for the Power Sports, Automotive, and Heavy Equipment industries. Regardless of the pandemic, the demand for structural fasteners remained high, which enabled Unytite to continue operations to fulfill the need to build and maintain infrastructure around the country. Due to the demand, Unytite purchased a new Nedscroef MW32 Hot Forming machine that is able to produce up to 80,000 pieces in a 9-hour shift. The new machine was received from Belgium in January of this year and was operational and producing nuts by the beginning of February in our LaSalle Plant. The total investment was approximately $700,000 and was purchased to replace an outdated 2006 MW32. The company is expecting to see a significant improvement in efficiency, quality, and a reduction of tooling costs. The LaSalle facility crew worked tirelessly preparing for its arrival and installing the new MW32.

Another exciting purchase Unytite made is located in Houston, Texas. In January, Unytite acquired a company called Fastener Link, Inc. Fastener Link is a leading distributor for 2H heavy hex nuts used in the energy market. With the belief that there will be an increased demand
for domestically made fasteners, the new distribution center will give Unytite more opportunity to expand their business. Unytite continues to develop and grow as a company with the philosophy to manufacture high-quality products with safety continuing to be a top priority.

Black Bros. Co. – Mendota’s Oldest Manufacturer Black Bros. Co., the oldest manufacturing firm in Mendota, can trace its roots in the area back to the turn of the 20th century, although the company history goes even farther back than that. Founded in 1882 in Lanark, Scotland, by the five original Black brothers – William, John, James, Walter and David, as well as their father, William Sr. The business relocated in the late 1880s to Chicago before the five brothers, their father, and their families ultimately settled in Mendota in 1899. Black Bros. Co. has transformed from a small woodworking shop into a world-renowned manufacturer of roll coating and laminating equipment. Originally used for wood only, Black Bros. Co. has expanded over the years into a wide variety of other industries and applications including metals, plastics,
foam and electronics. Black Bros. associates have designed, built and tested more than 30,000 machines and delivered them across the globe to every continent except Antarctica, earning them an international reputation for innovative engineering, quality manufacturing and
dedicated support. The manufacturers who use Black Bros. Co.’s equipment include producers of furniture, kitchen cabinets, doors, windows, wall paneling, ceiling and floor tile, insulation, rubber flooring, plastic containers and RVs, to name a few. The people at Black Bros.
are not only committed to producing quality machines, but also to the Illinois Valley. Black Bros. employees can be found volunteering for many area organizations, including the local Chamber of Commerce and various civic and youth organizations throughout the area.

Advanced Chiropractic helps patients of all ages Dr. Ryan Smith at Advanced Chiropractic in Peru uses a very gentle chiropractic technique that has helped a variety of people from infants to the elderly, called Atlas Orthogonal. A misaligned atlas can interfere with nerves that control muscles and organs, and can be responsible for problems throughout the body — ranging from neck and shoulder pain to carpal tunnel, muscle spasms, migraine headaches, arthritis, fibromyalgia, knee and foot problems, asthma, stomach problems and many other conditions. After a consultation, Smith uses X-rays to determine how the neck is misaligned and then uses a machine that is designed to deliver just the right amount of pressure to correct the angle. Patients won’t feel the machine, only the difference, and sometimes immediately. Advanced Chiropractic also offers massage therapy customized arch supports for the feet, weight loss programs as well as DNA and food sensitivity testing. Zupec named Coca-Cola Academic Team Gold Scholar Each year, hundreds of students take the first step toward successful careers at Illinois Valley Community College. IVCC sophomore Dylan Zupec of Granville will transfer to NIU to major in electrical engineering next fall. He is planning a career as an embedded system engineer. At IVCC, the son of John and Kelly Zupec tutors fellow students in math and physics. He was recently named one of just 50 Coca-Cola Academic Team Gold Scholars and will receive a $1,500 scholarship. His selection was based on scores he earned in the All-USA Academic Team competition, for which more than 2,000 applications were received. As co-president of IVCC’s Phi Theta Kappa chapter, he led a volunteer service project at Upscale Resale, a thrift store in Spring Valley. As a result of that work, the group donated $500 in appliances to Illinois Valley Animal Rescue’s April silent auction.

City of Mendota — Sewer updates nearing completion Work is nearing completion on a threephase project to update and replace aging sewer equipment in Mendota. Phase 2 was completed on Oct. 26 with the arrival of the new lift pump station. The pre-fabricated building arrived in town by semi-truck and was hoisted into place with a large crane. The building will serve as the Motor Control Center, providing the electrical controls for the automated lift station that ensures waste water travels to the waste water treatment. The prior lift station was originally installed in the late 1960s with renovations in the mid 1990s, explained Public Works Director Tim Kimrey, who is overseeing the project. The installation of the new system provides an upgraded system and houses a backup power generator and should prevent sewage backups in residences in the 3rd Ward. The multi-phased system also includes more than 1,500 feet of new 12-inch force main. The final phase in the upgrades is on target for completion before the end of 2021 and includes eliminating the old lift station. The project costs are at about $3.5 million and has been funded by the city. PHOTO SUBMITTED BY CITY OF MENDOTA Kimrey said saving and budgeting allowed the city to pay for the project with- Pictured above, a crane hoists the building that will house the new lift pump station, completing phase 2 in the sewer replacement and updates for this year. out incurring extra debt.

Over the next century, the company expanded, diversified and merged with other cutting-edge agricultural firms to grow into the world’s largest producer of reels, sieves and chaffers for combines. Attendees gather at the 2021 NewsTribune’s Illinois Valley Sports Hall of Fame Induction Banquet at the Illinois Valley Super Bowl in Peru on Thursday, Sept. 23, 2021.
Illinois Valley Sports Hall of Fame sets June 2 date to induct Class of 2022 By J.T. Pedelty Local sports fans, mark those calendars for June 2. The NewsTribune Illinois Valley Sports Hall of Fame will be inducting its third class on a night that food, drinks, honors and memories are all on the menu. The 2022 NewsTribune Illinois Valley Sports Hall of Fame Inductee Banquet will take place 5-8 p.m. June 2 at the Auditorium Ballroom, 109 Wright St. in La Salle. Doors will open at 5 p.m., dinner will be served at 6 p.m. and the inductions and storytelling will commence immediately after. Tickets are $37 and are available at qr.shawlocal. com/IVHOF22. This year’s class will be revealed in Shaw Media publications such as the NewsTribune, The Times, the Putnam County Record and the Bureau County Republican as well as social media throughout the coming weeks. The previous two years’ inductees
are a virtual who’s who of Illinois Valley sports history. “I don’t know if people truly realize the sports history and success our area has had, and the Hall of Fame has helped celebrate that history,” Shaw Media’s Jared Bell, a driving force behind the event, said. “Every member in our Class of 2022 is thrilled be part of the event, and we have inductees coming from as far away as Florida. “It’s always special to see so much talent in one place on one night, and seeing the inductees interact with other inductees is by far the best part.” The classes of 2019 and 2020-21 included: • Joe Rutgens, La Salle-Peru • Eric Siebert, La Salle-Peru • J.A. Happ, St. Bede • Shawn Jeppson, Hall • Kailey Klein, Hall • Steve Safranski, Putnam County • Bill Brown, Mendota • Nicole (Coates) Schaefbauer, Princeton • Gil Love, Ottawa

The Class of 2022 promises to only enhance and add to that list of local sports luminaries. “The event is such a special evening for anyone who attends,” said Jeanette Smith, Shaw Media regional advertising director and co-creator of the IV Sports Hall of Fame Committee. “By honoring the inductees, we get a glimpse into the history of sports in our area. We hear stories of who these athletes were, what they accomplished and where they are now. “It’s not just about the sports. It’s about the human interest side as well. Please join us in honoring the Class of 2022. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 banquet was postponed until September 2021. This year marks its return to its customary June spot on the calendar. Nominations are open for consideration as future inductees by contacting Bell at jbell@shawmedia.com or 815-220-6953.

The Cantlin Law Firm more than attorneys, they are family The Cantlin Law Firm is not your typical law firm as it is not every day the attorneys in the firm are family members. Being family is what makes The Cantlin Law Firm unique as teamwork and collaboration comes naturally when working with family. The venerable Ottawa law firm was established by John L Cantlin in 1977 and is entering its 45-year anniversary. John, who goes by Jack, works alongside three of his five children, Timothy, Joseph, and Megan. Jack’s other two children are also attorneys. His oldest daughter, The Honorable Christina M. Cantlin was appointed as a Circuit Judge in the 13th Judicial Circuit of Illinois and his oldest son, Ryan works for the LaSalle County State’s Attorney’s office. With so much of the family working together, it is often asked what the holidays are like. Luckily, each attorney focuses on different areas of the law. The Village of North Utica completed the renovations to the former Waltham School building in late 2021. In January 2022, the Villages’ Administrative Offices were moved to it’s new location. The Starved Rock Country Welcome Center is also located in the building which includes a gift shop featuring all Illinois made products! The building has a community room available for residents to use for meetings and gatherings and has begun using the gym as a community recreational facility open to residents. A new Youth Basketball Program was established which has been very successful and a wonderful addition to the community. Many children from the Village of North Utica, as well as from other communities have participated and enjoyed the program. The renovation of the historic property offers Utica residents a multiuse building that will continue to serve the community for many years to come. The Village continues to be a wonderful place to live, work, and raise a family!

Steinberg’s: Customer service before, during and after sale Just seven money-saving minutes southwest of the Peru Mall. That’s the way Bruce Steinberg of Steinberg’s Furniture likes to describe the location where the 133-year-old family-run business has been servicing generations of customers. “We’re a little off the beaten path,” said Steinberg, who is the fourth generation to operate the store. “We’re not on the north end of town, but rather the west end, on U.S. Route 6, just a block from local icons like the Igloo and Lou’s LaGrotto. But we’re definitely worth the trip. Our building looks small from the highway, but it’s deceiving because we have 30,000 square feet of display space”. The store stresses service before, during and after the sale with low-pressure salespeople and an instore service department. The store is a member of Furniture First, a nationwide buying group of more than 250 independent stores. This gives Steinberg’s the same buying power as large chain stores, and the savings are passed along to the customer.
Steinberg’s also features a Mattress 1st Sleep Shop. The in-store shop features mattresses from Serta, iComfort, Simmons-Beautyrest and TempurPedic. The store also features the Support Report imaging system. “Support Report measures an individual’s pressure points with the same technology used to evaluate patients at the Mayo Clinic,” Steinberg said. “It guides a customer to the correct group of mattresses for their body type. Each group contains a selection of mattresses at different price points. It lets you select your mattress based on your body’s pressure points, not pressure from a salesperson.” The company has added new features to their website, steinbergsfurniture.com.

Inman Electric Motors celebrates 55 years Inman Electric Motors is proud to be celebrating its 55th year in business in the Illinois Valley. Inman Electric provides motor rebuilding and rewinding services for power generation plants, petrochemical plants, oil refineries, steel mills, automotive and heavy equipment manufacturers, machine tool companies, cement and sand plants and other industrial manufacturers. They routinely provide services for customers within a 200-mile radius from their facility in La Salle, IL. As a recognized leader in industrial electric motor repair and sales, Inman Electric Motors Inc. continues to work to expand its facility and improve its motor repair capabilities for their customers. In 2021, Inman completed a 6,000 sq. ft. expansion that increased the company’s repair and storage capabilities. The new addition is equipped with two 40-ton bridge cranes, each with 30 ft. of lifting height under the hook. The company’s repair facility and warehouses now cover over 80,000 sq. ft. of space over 3.5 acres. The facility is equipped
Inman Electric motor technicians work on winding a 2,500 HP motor stator for a power generation customer. and designed to allow Inman to work on very large motors up through 15,000 horsepower. In addition to the multiple 40-ton overhead bridge cranes, the facility has some of the largest curing ovens in the Midwest, and the highest voltage testing capability in a five-state area. Inman Electric’s high voltage test panel is capable of running electric motors through 13,000 horsepower at 13,800 volts. During test runs, motors are secured to a 20,000-pound
steel floor plate on an independent foundation. Test results are documented and provided electronically to customers. Inman Electric also has the ability to test motors at full load capacity using a recently installed water-cooled dynamometer. Inman’s vacuum pressure impregnation system (VPI) is 12 feet in diameter, one of the largest in the Midwest. The system utilizes 8,000 gallons of insulating resin for processing coils and windings of large electric motors. VPI provides the ultimate in rewind quality and electrical performance. The VPI process gives coils the greatest mechanical strength, a cooler running motor, and the highest level of environmental protection for a long-lasting motor. The sale of new industrial and agricultural motors and variable frequency drives is another a large part of Inman’s business as is their Motor Management Program. In January 2022, they became an official distributor of Siemens low and medium voltage motors. Inman Electric is also a distributor for
Baldor/ABB, GE, Toshiba, TECO-Westinghouse, WEG, and Marathon motors and Toshiba variable frequency drives. Their Motor Management Program includes the storage, maintenance, warehousing, and testing of customer-owned motors. “ART therapy was something that seemed silly to me at first but with all the traumatic events that had occurred in my life I was willing to try it and I’m so glad I did. I was able to walk through my past trauma and detach all the negative emotions and anxiety from it. The trauma is still there but I am able to move on from it, accept it’s place in my life and live in peace. I am truly grateful for this therapy and would recommend it to others in a heartbeat.” - S.W.

IVAC Works to Increase Offerings to Members and Community The Illinois Valley Area Chamber of Commerce, like many businesses, felt the impact of COVID-19 during the last 2 years. With a new director hired in July of 2021 the staff has been working diligently to serve their members and community in these uncertain times. Bill Zens, Executive Director for IVAC, said the organization looked at what programs have been run in the past and where there is an opportunity for development of offerings that will help address the needs our community is facing. Zens says that he and the board are in conversations with members and community leaders to determine what can be done. The Chamber invites anyone who has an idea to share it by calling, emailing or stopping by. Among the plans in progress is a leadership program that will focus on different areas of impact

on the 3-county region that IVAC covers. The program will include local history, agriculture, health care, education, finance, and more. The goal is to provide future leaders insight and connections to key topics that will drive our area forward. In addition to the leadership program, IVAC has started new member marketing programs including a podcast, member spotlights on the radio, and a new social media campaign. The Chamber also initiated Chamber Bucks, a local gift certificate that can be used at more than 40 member businesses. “These are just a few items we are working on. Keep an eye on our social media pages and monthly newsletters, there are multiple opportunities every month for networking and personal development being announced.” Zens said.

Valley Regional Health Services features a state-of-the art PET/CT scanner
Valley Regional Health Services features a state-of-the art PET/CT scanner called Discovery IQ. The scanner has the Q.Clear feature, which allows for more accurate tumor measurement. VRHS can scan patients in half the time and with a lower dose of radiation. “We’re able to see smaller tumors,” said coordinator Karen Karczewski. “That means sooner diagnosis and sooner treatment, which hopefully will lead to a better outcome for the patient.” The scanner has the ability to scan patients from head to toe without having to move them. PET is a test that uses a radioactive sugar molecule to produce pictures of the function and metabolism of the body’s cells. CT scans generate a detailed view of the anatomy or structure of the body’s organs and tissues. The laboratory uses a chemistry analyzer,
an Abbott Architect, to provide a broader test menu with a quicker turnaround time. The laboratory provides routine and stat blood counts, chemistry tests and tumor marker assays. Valley Regional Health Services is a joint venture St. Margaret’s Hospital – Spring Valley and St. Margaret’s Health – Peru, comprised of experienced laboratory and diagnostic imaging technologists. Together, they provide state-ofthe-art care for patients with cancer and other blood disorders. VRHS is located at Valley Regional Cancer Center, Peru, and provides diagnostic imaging and laboratory services to patients. VRHS offers PET/ CT imaging scans Monday through Thursday, and laboratory services Monday through Friday. Every patient at VRHS is treated with extraordinary compassion and care.

City of Peru ECONOMIC GROWTH While the City of Peru is small in population for LaSalle County at just under 9 percent of the county’s population, it is a vital economic resource to the county. In 2020 it generated approximately 35 percent of total retail sales. In 2021 more than $6.7 million of taxable sales occurred within the city. The city’s economic retail base continues to grow and in the last year it welcomed new businesses and saw the renovation and improvement of existing businesses. The City of Peru maintains a AA3 credit rating through Moody’s Investor Service, thanks to its strong economic indicators. Over the past 10 years the city has decreased its outstanding debt by $21 million. GREAT DESTINATION The city also welcomed two new residential subdivisions, the Pointe, which has sold out its available 18 lots and the Pohar’s Crossing Subdivision which includes 57 residential lots and a 3-lot commercial area located just north of Baker Lake. The City of Peru has one of the lowest property tax rates in the region. In August 2021 the Peru Police Department officially moved into their new location on North Peoria and Midtown Road. In the past two years the city has welcomed several new businesses, including Jeremiah Joes, Jimmy John’s, Dominos Pizza, AG Solutions, Mr. Sparkles Auto Spa, Wahlburgers and Fire on Fifth. Coming soon is the new Quick Trip
Police Station
Pistol Shrimp Travel Plaza set to open later this year. On the plans for 2022 are five new corporate/private hangers that will be constructed at the municipal airport and the city is awaiting final contracts from the Illinois Division of Aeronautics for the airport project to construct Phase 2 Taxiway Extension, completing the North-South runway parallel taxiway. There are also several capital improvement projects for 2022 to improve road-
ways and the St. John’s Phase 2 Water Main and Sewer Improvements. SPORTS & RECREATION The TBM Avengers Reunion & Salute to Veterans is set to take place May 20-21 at the Illinois Valley Regional Airport in Peru. This event features TBM Avengers as well as other World War II aircrafts on display, an air show on both days, live music and food and the ceremonial salute to veterans on Saturday. There will be plenty to love with the improvements for the Washington Park tennis and pickleball courts. The improvements include complete replacement of the tennis courts and the addition of four pickleball courts with a walking path. Plans are underway for this year’s summer highlight with Taste of the Valley, Aug. 4-6 at Centennial Park featuring food, crafts and a 5K race and entertainment. This summer the City of Peru will welcome baseball fans of the Illinois Valley Pistol Shrimp, a collegiate summer baseball league that plays at Veterans Memorial Park in Peru. After last year’s inaugural season fans are excited to welcome the team back for the summer. Admission is free with bleacher seating and lawn space too.
