Veteran Kenneth Troyan holds a Deadwood flute made in Africa on Thursday, Jan. 6, at the American Legion Post 33 in Ottawa. Troyan is reaching out to veterans to provide them with free beginner flutes so they can learn something new and discover how to play a musical instrument. Those interested can contact him at kennethroyan@gmail.com.

Starved Rock Country Community Foundation makes donation to Flutes for Vets of Central Illinois By MICHAEL URBANEC

murbanec@shawmedia.com The Starved Rock Country Community Foundation is launching a new initiative to provide a grant to a different community group in the La Salle, Bureau, Putnam and neighboring county region four times a year. As the first recipient, Flutes for Vets of Central Illinois received $1,500 from the foundation. George Carizey, the president of the Starved Rock Country Community Foundation, said Flutes for Vets of Central Illinois is the first recipient of these community grants that organizations can apply for in January, April, July and October. Kenneth Troyan founded Flutes for Vets of Central Illinois in May of last year after learning of a Tucson, Arizona, organization called Flutes for Vets run by Kathryn Twinfeathers, an American woodwind flute player for more than 20 years. “This is a music therapy program,” Troyan said. “We try to help people deal with their PTSD or other mental health

issues, and as long as they play seriously, if they play every day or week, they’ll find the music affecting their brain and giving them a soothing calmness.” Troyan said the flute as a musical instrument is helpful to those who have chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and other breathing problems, as it helps them work on breathing mechanisms and techniques that enlarge lung capacity. Troyan showed off his collection of wooden flutes he has for people to practice. Veterans taking his course start on a plastic beginner flute, which is given to them for free to go with their 12 lessons. The flutes Troyan uses are wooden and handmade by Randy Starnes of Chillicothe, and each flute has some-

thing different about it. The larger flutes produce a deeper baritone sound while the smaller flutes, what Troyan called a piccolo flute, create a higher pitched noise. Troyan even showed off a flute that has two airways, one that makes a constant stream of noise on one side while the other shifts pitch by adjusting the fingering over the holes. Everything Troyan does with Flutes for Vets of Central Illinois is free. Without donations, Troyan said, he can’t keep this program going. Donations can be sent to Flutes for Vets of Central Illinois, 3433 E. 1550th St, McNabb, IL, 61335. Flutes for Vets of Central Illinois also has a Facebook page that goes by the same name. People can donate at that page. Veterans interested in attending classes can contact Troyan at kennethtroyan@gmail.com. As for the Starved Rock Country Community Foundation, it accepts donations through its website, srccf. org. It also has a Facebook page that goes by the organization’s name.

UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS EXTENSION

Katie Smith hired to help 4-H programs in Bureau, La Salle, Marshall, Putnam counties

Member of Bureau County 4-H Federation, 11-year member of Walnut Winner’s 4-H Club SHAW LOCAL NEWS NETWORK University of Illinois Extension welcomed Katie Smith to its 4-H team. Smith has been hired as the extra help 4-H extension program coordinator for Bureau, La Salle, Marshall and Putnam counties. While she is new to this position, she is not new to 4-H in the four-county area. She was an 11-year member of the Walnut Winner’s 4-H club, and an active member in the Bureau County 4-H Federation throughout high school. She understands firsthand how valuable 4-H experiences are to youth in rural areas; however, she also wants to provide opportunities that show 4-H is for everyone.

This is a new position for local 4-H programs. Smith was hired to help grow local federation (teen leadership) clubs, recruit new Cloverbud (ages 5 to 7) members, help new members navigate the 4-H system, and provide support to leaders and clubs. She will work with the other 4-H team members and use strategic planning to fulfill these responsibilities alongside her own personal ideas stemming from her 4-H experiences. With an ever-changing and growing 4-H program, she is needed as a resource and support to sustain established clubs and members. On a personal note, Smith attended Sauk Valley Community College before transferring to Illinois State University where she earned her bachelor’s degree in May 2021 in agriculture communications and leadership and animal industry management. In her free time, she enjoys shopping, doing yoga and making crafts.

Some of her favorite 4-H project areas include sewing, cooking and horticulture, but after taking 15 to 20 projects to the fair each year, she has experienced a little bit of everything. Smith is looking forward to meeting all the clubs and sharing activities to help members be more prepared for the fair. For more information about 4-H in your county, visit https://extension. illinois.edu/blmp. The mission of University of Illinois Extension is to provide practical education to help people, businesses and communities solve problems, develop skills and build a better future. University of Illinois Extension provides equal opportunities in programs and employment. If you have questions or need more information, call Beth Dellatori, 4-H youth development educator, at the University of Illinois Extension – Bureau, LaSalle, Marshall, Putnam unit office at 815-224-0889.

EDCNCI names new executive director Gina Czubachowski has 10 years experience in economic development The Economic Development Corporation of North Central Illinois named Gina Czubachowski as its new executive director. Czubachowski has been with EDCNCI since it commenced in 2016 as the administrative manager. Czubachowski has been a member of the local chapter, Illinois Valley Society for Human Resource Management, as well as the former president for the Ottawa Network of Young eXecutives. Previously, she worked as a business adviser at the Small Business Development Center at Illinois Valley Community College. She brings more than 10 years of economic development experience. She has a master’s of business administration and bachelor’s of finance from Illinois State University and graduated from IVCC. Czubachowski is a north-central Illinois native and a part-time business adjunct faculty instructor at IVCC. Czubachowski most recently graduated from the University of Oklahoma Economic Development Insti-

tute on Oct. 28, 2021, at the OU EDI Fall 2021 session. OU EDI is an intensive 117-hour certificate program that provides a broad spectrum of advanced education for the economic development professional. “OU EDI is the premier organization dedicated to training economic development professionals,” said Mark James, the dean. “These graduates represent some of the finest economic development practitioners in the U.S. working to support their local communities.” OU EDI classes focus on three major core areas – business retention and expansion, real estate and credit analysis – as well as areas of concentration in marketing, entrepreneurship and managing economic development organization. During the December EDCNCI board of directors meeting, the directors reviewed the past five-year outcomes and progress and efforts made by the staff to market the region. The board made the decision it would like to promote an internal candidate to be the next leader. “We are excited to elevate Gina to executive director,” EDCNCI Chairman John McCormick said. “Gina has

the skills necessary to continue moving our region forward and meet our main objective to bring quality employers to our region. She has been an integral part of EDCNCI since inception and has been rooted in the region and is ready to work with our investors.” The promotion follows the resignation of former president and CEO Mike Kirchhoff. Although 2021 was challenged by the pandemic, the EDCNCI received 105 leads, and of those leads, it was able to submit properties for 40 of those leads. “Our organization continues to receive many great project leads; we submit the properties that fit the project requirements,” Czubachowski said. “The challenge for our region is responding to leads that want an existing building. Project leads for existing buildings will turn around much faster. When it comes to projects seeking land and willing to construct a building, those take more time and due diligence, and we must be patient and persistent with those project leads. Our local properties have generated several site visits during the last five years and while we work toward a
