It’s Thyme to Boost Your Immunity Most of us think of thyme as a staple of our spice set, thanks to its subtle, yet distinctive taste. But when you look at the history of thyme, you’ll see it’s much more than an after-thought ingredient. For example, the ancient Greeks burnt it as incense in their temples. In the Middle Ages, thyme was placed beneath pillows to aid sleep and ward off nightmares. And during the Crusades, women often gave knights gifts that included thyme leaves, which were believed to bring courage. Today, thyme is gaining more and more attention for its health benefits, which include boosting the strength of your immune system. Thyme is packed with vitamin C and is a good source of vitamin A, copper, fiber iron and manganese. Other health benefits of thyme include its ability to relieve stress, reduce respiratory issues, improve heart health, protect against chronic diseases, stimulate blood flow and prevent fungal infections. In other words, it’s time to add thyme to your favorite meals.

Spring-Thyme Chicken Stew Ingredients: 1 pound small red potatoes, halved 1 large onion, finely chopped ¾ cup shredded carrots 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour 6 garlic cloves, minced 2 teaspoons grated lemon zest 2 teaspoons dried thyme ½ teaspoon salt ¼ teaspoon pepper 1½ pounds boneless skinless chicken thighs, halved 2 cups reduced-sodium chicken broth 2 bay leaves 2 tablespoons minced fresh parsley Directions: 1 Place potatoes, onion and carrots in a 3 quart slow cooker. Sprinkle with flour, garlic, lemon zest, thyme, salt and pepper; toss to coat. Place chicken over top. Add broth and bay leaves. 2 Cook, covered, on low 7 to 9 hours or until chicken and vegetables are tender. Remove bay leaves. Sprinkle servings with parsley. Are You the Type to Have Type 2 Diabetes? "God, grant me serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can and wisdom to know the difference." — Serenity Prayer

For more than 30 million Americans, it takes a lot of serenity – and constant monitoring – to cope with the challenges of type 2 diabetes. For many millions more, it will take courage to make the lifestyle changes needed for prevention.

6 | AdventHealth | SPRING 2020

I

f you or someone close to you is living with type 2 diabetes, then you know just how grueling this condition can be. Day in and day out, you have to constantly keep tabs on your blood sugar, prepare a healthy diet, read each and every food label, try to squeeze in daily exercise, and in some cases take daily medication. That’s why it’s so important to understand what diabetes is, how to recognize it and what you can do to try and prevent it. To begin with, type 2 diabetes is a chronic condition that affects the way your body processes sugar (glucose), which is an important fuel for your body. “Type 2 diabetes occurs when a person has high blood sugars called hyperglycemia, an inability of their body to use insulin appropriately called insulin resistance and an impairment in insulin secretion from their pancreas,” said Nichole Smith, MD, Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism, AdventHealth Shawnee Mission. Signs and symptoms of type 2 diabetes often develop slowly. In fact, many people have type 2 diabetes for years without knowing it. Here’s what to look for: C Increased thirst C Frequent urination C Increased hunger C Unintended weight loss C Fatigue C Blurred vision C Slow-healing wounds C Frequent infections C Areas of darkened skin, usually in the armpits and neck.

If you notice any of these symptoms, you should see your doctor immediately.

There are serious, long-term health concerns, too. “Diabetes increases the risk of heart attacks, strokes, nerve damage and kidney disease that can lead to dialysis and amputation of limbs,” said Smith. Eye diseases can also be caused by diabetes, including glaucoma which is caused by increased pressure in the eye, cataracts and retinopathy which is damage to the blood vessels in the back of the eye. “Because of the risk diabetic eye disease, it is important you have a dilated eye exam at least once per year to monitor for these conditions,” said Smith. Currently, there’s no cure for type 2 diabetes, but losing weight, eating well and exercising can help manage the disease. Diabetes medications or insulin therapy may also be needed. Type 2 diabetes used to be known as “adult-onset diabetes” because it usually occurred in adults 45 and older. But today, more and more young adults and children are being diagnosed with the disorder, probably due to the rise in childhood obesity. Unlike type 1 diabetes, which is caused by genetics, type 2 diabetes is caused by a combination of genetics and lifestyle factors, including weight gain and lack of physical exercise. “Fortunately, type 2 diabetes can be preventable by choosing to follow a healthy diet, staying active and maintaining a normal weight,” said Smith. It’s also reversible, in some cases. “Some individuals are able to lose enough weight to reverse type 2 diabetes. This is

sometimes achieved with lifestyle modifications alone or with the help of bariatric surgery and lifestyle modifications,” said Smith. Get the expert guidance and support you need to diagnose and manage your diabetes and live a happier, healthier life. Visit AdventHealthKC.com/DiabetesCare.

You may be at risk for Type 2 Diabetes if you: Have prediabetes C Are overweight C Are 45 years or older C Have a parent, brother or sister with type 2 diabetes C Are physically active less than three times a week C Have ever had gestational diabetes (diabetes during pregnancy) or given birth to a baby who weighed more than nine pounds C Are African American, Hispanic/Latino American, American Indian or Alaska Native (some Pacific Islanders and Asian Americans are also at higher risk). C

Healthy Advice for a Healthier Immune System W

inter cold and flu season may be over, but the need for a healthy immune system never ends. After all, the immune system is an important line of defense our bodies have against unwelcome microorganisms. The stronger your immune system, the less chance you’ll fall ill. “Unfortunately, we live in the midst of a serious epidemic of immune disorders,” said Tereza Hubkova, MD, Integrative Physician, AdventHealth Shawnee Mission. “In fact, one out of every two Americans either has asthma or allergy issues or some type of autoimmune disease.” There are solid theories about what is causing today’s immune system problems. One is the hygiene hypothesis. Researchers noticed that countries with lower hygiene standards have fewer cases of allergies and asthma. In other words, overzealous hygiene may makes us more prone to allergies. And in studies of our internal environment – the microbes that live inside of us – researchers found that many immune system problems can be traced to less healthy and less diverse microbiome (which connects to everything else in the body) at an early age, including children born by C-section, or those not breast-fed or given multiple antibiotics. “The risk of asthma goes up by 50 percent in children exposed to just two rounds of antibiotics in the first two years of life,” said Hubkova. “Children need exposure to nature, dirt, pets, other children with runny noses and natural surface playgrounds – not artificial turfs full of toxins – for a healthy immune system. This sets the stage for how healthy our immune system will be for the rest of our life.”

From Tereza Hubkova, MD Integrative Physician AdventHealth Shawnee Mission As an integrative medicine physician, Tereza Hubkova, MD, approaches health care in an exceptionally individualized way. With a background in internal medicine, she has dedicated more than two decades to studying a variety of healing tools, from nutritional medicine and functional medicine to the principles of Chinese medicine and Western herbalism.

Here’s some helpful advice to improve your body’s strength to fight illness: Fix Your Diet | Poor diet is the biggest reason for disease and death. For healthy microbiome, eat real (not processed) food, at least 25 to 35 grams of fiber daily, a variety of colors (from spices, fruits and vegetables) and avoid anything harmful to your microbiome, such as meat containing antibiotics, artificial sweeteners and other food adulterants. Mind Your Emotions | Positive emotions like love, gratitude and appreciation help strengthen our immune system, while negative emotions like anger, frustration and hostility have a toxic effect. Music that you enjoy has a powerful, positive effect on the immune system. For example, drumming circles can increase natural killer cells (NK) cells that fight cancer and viruses, and singing increases salivary immunoglobins that protect against respiratory infections. Get Your Exercise | Working out regularly can help you be more resilient against a variety of diseases – it lowers your blood sugar, improves your mood and helps you sleep better. Overexertion (such as running a marathon) however, is not good for your body, including your immunity. “For optimal health, it’s good to train for a marathon, but never actually run it,” said Hubkova.

Get Lots of Quality Sleep | Lack of sleep (or poor quality sleep) can severely weaken your immune system. Adults should strive to sleep for seven to eight hours every night – closer to eight. “We have lost nearly two hours of nightly sleep since the last century,” said Hubkova, “and it comes at a high cost to our immune system and brain health.” Habits that impair sleep include use of electronic devices in the evening, alcohol, caffeine, stress, eating late dinners and snacking after dinner (especially foods that raise blood sugar). Step Out in the Sun | Low levels of vitamin D have been linked to asthma, autoimmune diseases, cancers, heart disease, depression, fatigue, higher risk of fracture, etc. A brisk, 15-minute walk twice daily in the sunlight will help your skin produce vitamin D. But during winter months, most of us (north of Atlanta) still require vitamin D supplements. With these tweaks in your daily routine, you might help your immune system to be healthier. But to stop the current epidemic of immune disorders, obesity and mental health challenges, we have a collective responsibility to reclaim healthy food, water, air, protect the natural environment and help everyone live a balanced, happy life. Ask-A-Doctor

Michael Lambert, MD, Nephrologist, on Kidney Disease

What is chronic kidney disease?

What are kidney stones?

A condition in which kidney function declines over time. This is primarily noted by a reduction in the kidney’s ability to adequately filter toxins from the blood as well as the reduced ability to maintain chemical balance throughout the body.

Kidney stones are crystalline structures that form in the kidney and can increase in size and number over time. These can lead to obstruction of urine flow, a propensity for kidney infections and chronic damage to the kidney. The vast majority of kidney stones contain calcium and are visible on regular x-rays.

What are the main causes of chronic kidney disease? The leading causes of chronic kidney disease includes diabetes and hypertension. Other causes include NSAID use (ibuprofen, Celebrex, etc.) and obstruction to urine flow (prostate enlargement). Polycystic kidney disease is the leading genetic cause of chronic kidney disease.

10 | AdventHealth | SPRING 2020

What are the five stages of chronic kidney disease? The staging system is based on a calculated filtration rate which is essentially a percent of kidney function. From stages 1 to 5, as filtration declines, the severity of the chronic kidney disease increases. At stage 5, the percent kidney function is less than 15 percent and that is the point when renal replacement therapy (dialysis) is initiated. This is called end stage renal disease.

What are some ways to keep the kidneys healthy? Maintain excellent blood pressure control, glucose control and adequate hydration. Avoid medications that are damaging to the kidneys. Follow up with your primary care provider on a routine basis to include laboratory assessment, as signs and symptoms of chronic kidney disease are often not noted early in the course. When you are at chronic kidney disease stage 3 (less than or equal to 60 percent function), evaluation by a nephrologist is recommended. Your kidney condition should first be brought to the attention of your primary care provider, who can determine if you should be referred to an AdventHealth specialist. For more information, visit AdventHealthKC. com, or to find the right primary care provider for you, visit MyHealthKC.com.

When hunger strikes, it’s easy to reach for something quick to tide us over. A candy bar. A bag of chips. A box of crackers. But mindless snacking usually leads to overconsuming a bunch of empty calories – worse yet, it doesn’t even keep us full! That’s why it’s so important to snack strategically – to swap out less healthy foods for healthy options whenever our stomachs start growling between meals.
