Preventing Falls Can Protect Your Independence Every year, more than one-third of seniors age 65 or older experience fall-related injuries – including hip fractures – which can severely limit their activities and make it challenging for them to live independently. That’s why maintaining and improving good balance is so important as we get older. Balance exercises can help you keep your balance, and your confidence, at any age. Nearly any activity that keeps you on your feet and moving, even just walking, can help you maintain good balance. But some exercises designed to enhance your balance are particularly beneficial to help you improve your stability. For example, standing up from a seated position without using your hands. Or balancing on one foot while you’re standing at home. You may even consider Tai Chi, a form of movement training that has been found to improve both balance and stability, while reducing the incidence of falls. If you have severe balance problems or an orthopedic condition, be sure to get your doctor’s approval before starting balance exercises.

Make It a Summer to Savor with Slow Cooker Fruit Butter Like most folks, you’ve probably heard of (and enjoyed) apple butter over the years. But you may not know that almost any fruit can be easily made into a delicious butter to spread on toast, muffins, breakfast buns, bagels, French toast, waffles and pancakes – and it makes a delicious ice cream topping. Fruit butter has a smooth consistency and a silky texture, and it’s a fantastic way to preserve a big bounty of summer fruit. Of course, one of the best places to stock up on fresh, delicious fruit is The Overland Park Farmers’ Market, bringing farm-fresh food to Downtown Overland Park for more than 30 years.

Fruit Butter Ingredients: 5 lbs. fruit 1 cup granulated sugar ½ tsp. salt 2 tbsp. freshly squeezed lemon juice Herbs and spices of choice, if desired Directions: 1 Prepare fruit by rinsing under cool water. Peel or pit as needed and cut into 1-inch chunks. 2 Put fruit into slow cooker. Add sugar, salt and any desired herbs and spices. Stir to combine. 3 Place a wooden spoon across the top of the slow cooker and place the lid on top to allow venting. Cook on low, stirring every few hours, until thick and spreadable (about 10 to 12 hours). Put the spoon back in place beneath the lid after each stir. 4 Turn off slow cooker. Add lemon juice and stir to combine. Leave uncovered to cool. Transfer to blender and blend until smooth. 5 Store in sealed containers in the refrigerator for up to 10 days or in the freezer for up to six months. SUMMER 2019 | MyHealthKC.com | 3

Take a Healthier Interest in Your Own Health If you’re one of those folks who sees the glass as half-empty, you might worry that when it comes to today’s health challenges, American adults consume too much fast food and sugar, are under too much stress, don’t get enough sleep or exercise and are too disconnected from others. And for many people, these concerns are all true. However, if you prefer a “glass is half full” outlook, then you know there are more ways than ever to take charge of your health. From making changes to improve the quality of your sleep, finding ways to manage stress, to getting more exercise, you understand that making changes in your routine can pay off in better health and well-being. It all starts with a decision to focus on preventive health care – concentrating on staying healthy and avoiding health problems instead of only taking action once you become sick. “Preventive care is essential in your total health,” said Jee-hyon Park, MD, Internal Medicine, a primary care physician at AdventHealth Medical Group Primary Care at DeSoto. “It can help detect problems early or avoid problems in the future.” Of course, your primary care physician is at the frontline and

is the primary point of contact in management of your overall health. He or she can not only identify and treat common medical problems but can also identify risk factors and help in navigating the benefits and risks of screening tests to prevent or detect diseases. “Screenings take into account different variables including patient’s age, gender or family history,” said Park, “and can help identify risk factors for certain diseases and even minimize your likelihood of developing more serious illness.” Of course, you may wonder, with so many screening options for adults, how does a physician prioritize and decide which of the many available preventive services to recommend? “It’s important to evaluate the risks and benefits of each of the available preventive services for every patient,” said Park. “For example, many of the cancer screening guidelines have slight variabilities that a physician has to take into account and whether to recommend or defer.” Keep in mind, when it comes to your overall well-being, good mental health is just as important as good physical health, especially with statistics that show nearly one in five adults in the U.S. experience mental illness.

“We often tend to focus more on screenings related to physical health,” said Park. “However, there are screenings available for mental health conditions and substance abuse. This is especially important as there have been increasing number of adults experiencing mental illness.” Make sure you know if a health screening is right for you. Even if you take the initiative to have a health screening, you should still consult with your physician beforehand. “Your physician can help you decide whether the screening is really going to be beneficial,” said Park. “Plus, it’s important to identify whether the test could cause any harms or side effects.” For more information about which health screenings are right for you, talk to your primary care physician, or to find a primary care physician, visit MyHealthKC.com.

or years, Ken Crisp got out of bed every day at 5 am to embark on a healthful 3-mile walk. But last April, when he began having trouble catching his breath on every hill along the way, he knew something was wrong. Shortness of breath is the most common symptom for what Ken had: a valve disease called aortic valve stenosis. This condition occurs when the leaflets of the heart’s aortic valve become so stiff that blood doesn’t flow easily through the heart and body. It can also cause fatigue, lightheadedness, heart failure and even death. An estimated 2.5 million people in the U.S. over age 75 – more than 12 percent of the population – have this disease. “I had been working on losing weight recently,” said Crisp. “My heart function should have been improving, but it wasn’t. I’d had rheumatic fever in elementary school, and as you get older, that heart valve just gets weaker and weaker,” said Crisp. Because Crisp had undergone a triple bypass procedure in 2013, his cardiologist wanted to avoid opening up his chest again to repair the stenosis, if possible. “When I had the triple bypass procedure, I was in intensive care, and then the hospital, for quite a while,” said Crisp. “I couldn’t work for six weeks.” For more information about the Structural Heart Clinic at AdventHealth Shawnee Mission, call 913-632-9418 or visit AdventHealthKC.com/Heart.

The number of minimally invasive heart procedures just keeps growing Today, a wide range of heart procedures can be done using minimally invasive, robotically-assisted techniques to help make recovery faster and more comfortable. Minimally invasive heart procedures may include:

► Mitral valve repair

► Atrioventricular septal

and replacement ► Tricuspid valve repair and replacement ► Aortic valve replacement ► Atrial septal defect and patent foramen ovale closure

defect surgery ► Maze procedure for atrial fibrillation ► Coronary artery bypass surgery ► Saphenous vein harvest for coronary artery bypass surgery.

Minimally-i nvasive surgery is m inimizing the pain of aortic valve replacemen t

Potential benefits of minimally invasive heart surgery compared with open-heart surgery may include:

► Less blood loss ► Lower risk of infection ► Reduced trauma and pain ► Shorter time in the hospital, faster recovery and quicker return to normal activities ► Smaller, less noticeable scars.

Fortunately, Crisp was identified as a candidate for a newer, minimally-invasive procedure called Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR), performed by Ammar Habib, MD, and Casey Hertzenberg, MD, AdventHealth Shawnee Mission, who specialize in structural heart interventions, including TAVR. “Unlike with surgical aortic valve replacement, TAVR allows for implantation of a prosthetic valve without the need for a large chest incision or open-heart operation,” said Habib. ”Instead, special catheters and x-ray imaging are used to allow a prosthetic valve to be placed using your vessels without needing surgery. It is a great option for patients who may not tolerate or be good candidates for open-heart surgery.” TAVR does not routinely require traditional anticoagulation or “blood thinners” like mechanical heart valves. Additionally, TAVR involves no significant wounds to recover from, and patients usually notice significant symptom improvement immediately. “The procedure was scheduled for a Wednesday morning last April, lasted less than two hours and by 5 pm that day, I was walking,” said Crisp. “And I was back at work on Monday feeling great.” “Dr. Habib, Dr. Hertzenberg, my nurse, Stephanie Lininger and the whole TAVR team were wonderful,” said Crisp. “I felt totally at ease and really well prepared throughout the process. I knew just what to expect and didn’t have any anxiety.”

Who is best suited for TAVR? “Because aortic valve stenosis can be a complicated disease process, your doctor or cardiologist will likely want to refer you to a specialized structural heart team for further evaluation and treatment considerations. Patients are usually evaluated by both an interventional cardiologist and cardiothoracic surgeon,” said Habib. Patients evaluated in the Structural Heart Clinic at AdventHealth Shawnee Mission receive a comprehensive evaluation by Drs. Habib and Hertzenberg to determine the best approach to managing their aortic valve stenosis. It is recommended that patients undergo a cardiac work-up to determine their risk for the various treatment options available, as well as to determine their appropriateness for TAVR. In addition to a detailed review of each patient’s medical history, the recommended work-up typically includes an ECG, CT scan, breathing test, carotid ultrasound assessment and cardiac catheterization. Complete the seven-minute heart risk assessment online at AdventHealthKC.com/HEARTaware. At the end, download your results and share it with your primary care physician. From Ammar Habib, MD Interventional Cardiologist AdventHealth Medical Group Cardiology Ammar Habib, MD, interventional cardiology specialist, spent his residency in Internal Medicine at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine, followed by a fellowship in cardiovascular Disease at University of Kansas Medical Center and a fellowship in Interventional Cardiology at Brown University in Rhode Island.

Ask-A-Doctor

Suzanne Ozbun, MD,

family medicine, on memory concerns and brain health What’s the difference between a memory lapse and memory loss? A memory lapse is a period of time when someone forgets something they should otherwise know or remember – this is usually reversible. Memory loss is the loss of memories, such as facts, information and experiences. This may or may not be reversible, depending on the cause. Is it important to see a doctor quickly for a diagnosis if you or someone close to you is experiencing memory impairment issues? For anyone experiencing memory loss or memory impairment, prompt evaluation and treatment are essential for any of the potentially reversible causes of dementia. If the cause of dementia is not reversible, prompt evaluation is still important as many of our medications are aimed at preserving memory. Outcomes are likely to be better if medications and interventions are initiated earlier. 10 | AdventHealth | SUMMER 2019

What is mild cognitive impairment, and how is it different than Alzheimer’s? MCI is an intermediate condition between normal memory and dementia. The deficits associated with mild cognitive impairment are not severe enough to meet the criteria for Alzheimer’s or other dementia. Can lifestyle, habits and daily activities really have an impact on their brain health? Yes, substances such as alcohol, tobacco and drugs have long been recognized as potential causes of memory loss. Sleep deprivation has also been associated with effective and normal memory, and increased stress can affect concentration and ability to recall information. Should someone be concerned if he or she is often not quite able to retrieve information that feels like it’s “on the tip of your tongue?” Not always. Normal aging can be associated

with some mild changes in memory, most notably name recall. However, normal aging is not accompanied by loss of ability to function in normal daily living. Are there recommended activities or medications to help maintain brain health? Yes, regular physical activity and activities that stimulate and challenge the mind can be helpful. Regular socialization and taking steps to limit stress can help to fend off depression and anxiety, which are both associated with memory loss. We also recommend regular sleep, eating a healthy diet full of plenty of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean meats, limiting alcohol and avoiding tobacco products or other drug use.

Don’t Let Sitting Syndrome Get You Down

Average amount of time spent sitting in the car or at home is 11 hours daily.

The term “Sitting Syndrome” is commonly used to describe the health dangers of a sedentary lifestyle. Sitting or lying down for too long increases your risk of chronic health problems, such as heart disease, diabetes and some cancers. Fortunately, being active is not as hard as you think. The impact of movement — even leisurely movement — can be profound. For starters, you’ll burn more calories. This might lead to weight loss and increased energy. Also, physical activity helps maintain muscle tone, your ability to move and your mental wellbeing, especially as you age. There are lots of simple ways to include some physical activity in your day. For example:

Sitting more than six hours per day increases the risk of death within 15 years by 40 percent.

• Get an hour a day of medium to intense exercise, such as brisk walking or cycling. • If you sit all day, stand as often as you can. • Drink water out of a small container, which will force you to get up often to get more water. • Park your car farther away from the store or office. • Go to the mall, walk around, do window shopping. • Take up gardening. • Dance to your favorite music. • Climb your staircase several times in a day. • Go for a walk in the park. • Walk your pets regularly.

24

Sitting syndrome is responsible for more than $24 billion in direct medical spending.
