A foam roller can provide you with a number of important health benefits, whether you’re looking to massage sore muscles or you want to make it part of your exercise routine. Choose the Type of Foam Roller That’s Right for You One of the most important aspects of choosing a foam roller is the density. This determines how the roller will feel when you use it. The harder (higher density) foam rollers will provide a deeper, more intense massage. Softer rollers will provide a gentler massage.

Ready to Add a New Tool to Your Health Regimen? Let’s Roll! Foam rollers are exercise devices used for massage and fitness, and they come in many shapes, sizes and varying textures. They target tight, sore areas (known as “trigger points”) of the muscles and fascia – the tissue that connects your muscles and helps hold them, and the rest of your body, in place. Think of foam rolling as a way to massage your body — it’s also called “self-myofascial release” — giving you similar tension and muscular relief. Your first attempt at foam rolling may feel a tad awkward. But be patient. The technique becomes much more natural with a little practice. Here are some tips to get started: C You may find it painful to foam roll at first if your muscles are tight. To adjust pressure, reduce the amount of body weight you’re putting onto the roller. For example, if you’re rolling out your calf, use your arms to help support your body and take some of your body weight off the roller. C Slowly roll tender areas for 10 seconds to start, then work up to 30 to 60 seconds at a time. C Drink plenty of water after foam rolling to help with recovery. Virtual Foam Roller: Full Body Stretch and Strength Get ready for a head-to-toe foam rolling experience. Learn how to relieve tension and strengthen your body with this amazing fitness tool. This class is offered virtually for maximum convenience. All fitness levels welcome. Equipment needed: foam roller and yoga mat (optional). Coping With the Coronavirus There’s never a good time to let medical needs go untreated, even in the time of COVID-19.

T

here have been countless sad consequences from the novel coronavirus in 2020. Millions of cases worldwide and serious disruptions of our business, education, entertainment and many other vital communities. But there has also been a serious unintended consequence. Namely, fear of COVID-19 is causing many people to delay treatment for health issues that need to be addressed – including preventative care, postdischarge treatment and even emergency health situations.

From Jennifer Schultz, MD, Primary Care, AdventHealth Medical Group Internal Medicine & Pediatrics Jennifer Schultz, MD, earned her medical degree from Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine and completed her residency in the Internal Medicine & Pediatric program at Loyola University Medical Center. She is Board-certified in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics.

Emergency Care

Preventative Care

Even during a pandemic, accidents, heart attacks and strokes will continue to happen. And the emergency department remains the best source of life-saving care even while many people have concerns about the coronavirus. “Emergencies that go untreated can have long-lasting consequences. For example, an untreated heart attack could lead to long-term damage to the heart muscle that cannot be reversed,” said Jennifer Schultz, MD, Primary Care, AdventHealth Medical Group Internal Medicine & Pediatrics. Likewise, a stroke that is untreated could cause irreversible damage to the brain. Untreated infections may spread to the bloodstream and cause a condition called “sepsis” that can be fatal. These are just a few examples of the many instances in which early detection and treatment is the key.

Unfortunately, preventative care has become one of the victims of the new coronavirus, as many Americans have skipped routine physicals and screenings. And waiting to go to the doctor can allow small health issues to grow into bigger ones. “Missing services like mammograms, pap smears and colonoscopies could lead to a delayed diagnosis of a cancer,” said Schultz. “In addition, monitoring blood pressure and cholesterol is helpful in preventing heart and vascular disease. And discussing preventative habits like healthy diet and monitoring weight can help prevent disease in the future.” One irony is that while COVID-19 concerns may prevent someone from maintaining their preventative medical services, it could actually make them more vulnerable to the virus and other health problems. “Keeping your body healthy and fit can help you fight illness should you be exposed to or contract COVID-19,” said Schultz.

Post-Discharge Treatment After hospitalization, a follow-up appointment is often critical to ensure the medical condition that was treated is completely resolved. Your medical provider needs to be sure that infections are cured, wounds are healing and followup testing is completed. Often, labwork needs to be repeated to ensure blood counts are stable or electrolyte abnormalities are corrected. Many patients need to get renewals on their medications in order to treat the chronic condition that caused them to be hospitalized in the first place. “These visits are so important because they help prevent having to be readmitted to the hospital,” said Schultz.

Bottom Line: COVID-19 Shouldn’t Interfere With Your Medical Needs Of course, it’s as important as ever to stay on guard against the disease, including wearing masks in public and following social distancing guidelines. But we should all take comfort in knowing that our medical needs can still be addressed. “Many protocols have been put in place to help prevent the spread of COVID-19,” said Schultz. All patients will be asked to wear a mask and stand at least six feet away from others in the facility. After each patient encounter, all surfaces will be cleaned thoroughly before any new patient is allowed to enter an exam room. Staff will be wearing protective gear as appropriate to interact with patients. “Rest assured, with these new safeguards, as well as observing social distancing, patients can receive the medical care they need in the time of COVID-19, from routine to emergency treatment,” said Schultz.

Safe Cancer Screenings Cancer screening is a vital opportunity to check for cancer before you have symptoms. Getting screening tests regularly may find breast, cervical and colorectal (colon) cancers early, when treatment is likely to work best. Rest assured, we’re employing new safety measures to protect you and our caregivers, including universal mask use, temperature checks, social distancing, visitor restrictions and keeping our COVID-19 symptomatic patients separated from other patients. Nothing is more important to us than you. To make an appointment for cancer screening, visit AdventHealthKC.com.

Now’s the Time to Work on Being Mentally Strong Make your mental health a top priority during these times of high stress and uncertainty.

R

ight now, there’s no shortage of advice available about protecting your health during the COVID-19 pandemic – such as

washing your hands often and practicing social distancing. But protecting your mental health is just as important for your overall well-being. After all, job disruption, health and financial insecurity and isolation can seriously affect your psychological health. “COVID-19 will affect us all to varying degrees – physically, emotionally, socially and psychologically. Acknowledging, recognizing and acting on mental distress in these uncertain times are key to lessening the impact,” said Sabeen Khaliq, MD, Psychiatry, AdventHealth Shawnee Mission Behavioral Health.

8 | AdventHealth | SUMMER 2020

You may notice an increase in some of the following feelings: C feeling stressed and anxious C fearing that normal aches and pains might be the virus C excessively checking for symptoms in yourself or others C becoming irritable more easily C feeling insecure or unsettled C having trouble sleeping C feeling helpless or a lack of control C having irrational thoughts. Of course, keeping solid emotional and psychological stability during a pandemic can sometimes be difficult. It's normal to feel different, intense emotions. “With the awareness of these mental health risks, we can work towards coping with this challenging situation and reduce the potential impact on our mental health,” said Khaliq. Fortunately, there are many strategies that you can use to help prevent and manage fear, loneliness, anxiety, depression and other feelings. In spite of the ongoing uncertainty of the situation, take small steps every day to address your emotional needs. Get Physically Active | Physical activity has always been a vital component of good mental health. That’s more true now than ever. There are plenty of at-home workout programs that will help you stay active. There are many free apps, videos and fitness communities that can help you exercise if you don’t have any equipment. If it’s safe to do so, go for a walk, hike through the woods or run on some trails.

Maintain Social Connections | Even when you can’t physically be around people, you can still remain connected to friends, family and community. C Use social media to chat with relatives and friends C Post supportive comments, pictures and content on your social sites C Schedule regular video chats with friends, family members and co-workers C Send a card, handwritten letter or small note to lift someone’s spirits. Keep the Big Picture in Mind | Although things may feel really stressful right now, the pandemic won’t last forever. At some point, restrictions will end and many of the stressful issues affecting you now won’t be problems anymore. Keeping this in mind will help you keep things in perspective. Practice Gratitude | You might be tempted to think about the unfairness of this situation – whether it’s going to work or just having the freedom to eat in a restaurant with your friends. But it’s much healthier mentally to think about all the things you have to be thankful for. Spend a few minutes each day experiencing and expressing your gratitude. By doing these things, you’ll improve your psychological well-being. Use Calming Techniques | Learning techniques to counter stress – like deep breathing, visualization and mindful meditation – can improve your mood, reduce your health risks

and enhance your appreciation of daily life. Focus on the Things You Can Control | There are many things outside of your control during the pandemic. But you can control how well you take care of yourself, how often you talk to friends and family and how much media you consume. Engaging in activities and distractions – such as art, music, writing, cooking, reading and playing with your kids – can also have a positive impact on your neurochemistry and help lessen stress. “Preserving a positive mindset can be difficult – particularly during challenging situations – but it is attainable through maintaining mindfulness, optimism and gratitude,” said Khaliq. “Listen to another person’s story when you’re feeling down. It can help to get out of your own head.”

From Sabeen Khaliq, MD, Psychiatry, AdventHealth Shawnee Mission Behavioral Health Sabeen Khaliq, MD, is a Board-certified psychiatrist with AdventHealth Medical Group Psychiatry at Shawnee Mission where she provides psychiatric care to inpatients at AdventHealth Shawnee Mission and sees patients in the Intensive Outpatient Program. She earned her medical degree from Sind Medical College and completed her residency at the University of MissouriKansas City. She has worked as a psychiatrist in the United Kingdom, Pakistan and across the United States.

Ask-A-Doctor

Del Rey, MD,

Family Medicine, on Reopening Our Community

What is your advice about the reopening process?

What are the basics of wearing a mask in public?

What are your thoughts about developing a vaccine?

It is just that, as it is going to be a process. As things continue to open up and life starts to slowly resume, it is critical for people to evaluate their risk status. If a person is older and has multiple medical conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, etc., they will want to be extremely cautious in resuming life as normal. Of course, anyone can become very ill if they acquire the virus, so precautions should be undertaken for each individual.

This virus gets aerosolized easily and wearing the mask helps reduce those particles getting into the throat and lungs. Further, the mask conveys protection to not only yourself but others around you. The key to putting on a mask is to simply grab the straps – not the mask itself – then place across your face so that your nose and mouth are covered. Wearing a mask at restaurants is more challenging. Restaurants are working diligently on maintaining social distancing between tables. It would be prudent to limit places of increased exposure depending on your health status.

Life as normal probably will not occur until a successful vaccination program has been established. There are many trials going on worldwide for vaccine development that appear very promising. The key is getting enough people vaccinated to block transmission of the disease. In the meantime, precautions like social distancing, handwashing and wearing masks in public remain very important.

Will social distancing continue? I absolutely believe that social distancing is going to become much more the “norm” moving forward. It is easy to see and feel if you go to a store that people are consistently keeping physical distance between themselves and others. 10 | AdventHealth | SUMMER 2020
