Autumn is the Time to Fall in Love With Chili Again Chili is a surprisingly fast, family-friendly weeknight meal. This recipe varies from traditional chili by using lean, organic ground turkey, and gets its rich, smoky flavor from the smoked paprika and chipotle chili powder. The diced green chilies also add a little zip. But overall this chili is not too spicy for most people!

Recipe by Lisa Markley, MS, RDN, LD Lisa Markley is an integrative dietitian and culinary nutrition expert with nearly two decades of experience working towards improving the health of others. She is passionate about educating others how to harness the healing power of food and healthful lifestyle changes.

Black Bean Sweet Potato Turkey Chili Ingredients: 1 tablespoon avocado oil 1 pound organic ground turkey 1 medium yellow onion, chopped 3 cloves garlic, minced 1 (14.5-ounce) can diced tomatoes 1 (4.5-ounce) can green chilies (optional) 1½ tablespoons chili powder 2 teaspoons ground cumin ½ teaspoon smoked paprika ¼ teaspoon chipotle chili powder 1 medium sweet potato, diced 1 (15-ounce) can tomato sauce 1 cups low-sodium chicken broth or water (or more as needed) 1 (15-ounce) can black beans, drained and rinsed Salt and pepper to taste Optional toppings: Cilantro Avocado Sliced lime

Directions:

1 Heat the oil in a large stock pot over medium-high heat. Add the turkey and cook for 4 to 5 minutes until lightly browned.

2 Add the onion, garlic, diced tomatoes, green chilies and spices and sauté for 3 to 4 minutes over medium heat.

3 Add in sweet potato, tomato sauce, broth or water, and the drained beans, then simmer over low heat for 15 to 20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sweet potato is fully cooked.

AdventHealth Replaces Waiting Rooms and Paperwork with Curbside Check-in and Touchless Registration As the country continues to reopen and health care providers welcome their patients, new workflows and processes are being implemented to prevent the spread of viruses and infectious diseases like COVID-19. In addition to expanding video visit capabilities for physician practices, AdventHealth Medical Group is swapping the waiting room for a curbside waiting lot and replacing paper intake forms with online check-in. These changes aim to reduce unnecessary points of contact with others and remove the risk of exposure in a shared waiting room. To enable this touchless registration and check-in experience, AdventHealth Medical Group now offers online check-in and invites patients to wait comfortably in their car until the doctor is ready to see them. Your OB/GYN is your gateway to gynecologic health, no matter what your age.

N

o matter what life stage a woman is in – menstrual cycles, having babies or menopause – it’s vitally important to have the support of OB/GYNs and gynecologic oncologists working hand-in-hand for your wellbeing. “Every adult woman does not need a gynecologic oncologist. But every adult woman does need a gynecologic health care provider – which would include a gynecologist or primary care physician who provides routine gynecologic care. They would refer the patient to a gynecologic oncologist if the patient developed a complicated gynecologic problem or premalignant or malignant condition,” said Brenda Shoup, MD, Medical Director, Gynecologic Oncology, AdventHealth Cancer Center Shawnee Mission. Even though gynecologic cancers are relatively rare tumors, the

American Cancer Society points out that there are more than 100,000 new cases diagnosed and more than 30,000 deaths from gynecologic cancers in the U.S. annually. Overall, there are five different gynecologic cancers: ovarian, endometrial/uterine, cervical,

Finding Answers Together When health care leaders work together, we’re better equipped to help people overcome cancer. We’re bringing nationally recognized care to our community to help end cancer.

vulvar and vaginal cancer. Each one is unique, with different signs and symptoms. However, of the five cancers, there is a routine screening test for only one: cervical cancer. The lack of such tests for endometrial and ovarian cancer — the most common gynecologic cancers — makes it especially important for women and their doctors to be attuned to the symptoms of these diseases. The earlier they’re detected, the more successfully they can be treated. That’s why the two best defenses for women are knowing the signs and getting an annual exam for prevention and planning. “Routine gynecologic care is important to maintain gynecological health and to identify any problems before they become potentially life threatening,” said Lowell Byers, MD, Gynecologic Oncology,

AdventHealth Cancer Center Shawnee Mission. An annual, well-woman exam generally includes an assessment of your overall health, along with gynecologic screenings that include pap smears, pelvic exams and breast exams. “The recommended frequency of these screenings changes as women age. For example, the recommended frequency of pap smears is also dependent on the patient’s history and whether the HPV testing was performed. To avoid confusion, a good rule of thumb is to continue annual gynecologic evaluations. This may or may not include a pap smear or breast exam, depending on the women’s age,” said Sara Lange, MD, Gynecologic Oncology, AdventHealth Cancer Center Shawnee Mission. “Many people believe once they go through menopause, complete childbearing or have a hysterectomy, they don’t need any gynecologic exams. But the risk of most malignancies increases with age. Continuing routine checkups as a woman ages can identify potential problems before many patients are even aware they exist,” said Shoup. Lowering the risk of gynecologic cancer In addition to annual exams and overall awareness of any changes, there’s a lot that women can do to help lower their risk. “Women can help prevent gynecologic cancers by avoiding tobacco, maintaining a healthy body weight, using condoms for protection against sexually transmitted diseases, and having routine pap smears as

recommended by their physician,” said Byers. Since some of the symptoms of gynecologic cancer can mimic other ailments, it’s best to know your own body and watch for symptoms that are out of the ordinary for you. “Women should also become knowledgeable about their family history of malignancies and report this to their physician,” said Lange. Early detection not only saves lives, it saves hassle, worry and expense. When caught early, pre-cancerous cells or lesions can often be removed at a clinic or with minor surgery rather than having to go to the hospital for treatment.

Symptoms of cervical, ovarian, uterine, vaginal and vulvar cancers 3 Abnormal vaginal bleeding or discharge is common on all gynecologic cancers. 3 Feeling full too quickly or difficulty eating, bloating, and abdominal or back pain are common for ovarian cancer but can be experienced in advanced endometrial cancer. 3 Pelvic pain or pressure is common for ovarian and uterine cancers. 3 More frequent or urgent need to urinate and/or constipation are common for ovarian and vaginal cancers. 3 Itching, burning, pain, or tenderness of the vulva, and changes in vulva color or skin, such as a rash, sores, or warts, are found in vulvar cancer.

A

s the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases continues to rise, and schools, workplaces and public gathering places try to adapt, it’s clear the coronavirus outbreak is impacting our personal lives in lots of ways, big and small. According to a recent poll, nearly 44 percent of U.S. adults say their life has changed in a major way as a result of the pandemic. “Before the virus, people had established a consistent pattern of when they went to work, how long they were there, when they went home, etc. When the virus hit, all of that really got disturbed,” said Matthew Swan, MD, primary care physician, AdventHealth Medical Group.

Flexibility is a key success factor to cope with COVID-19 Rather than being driven by emotions like anger or despair, flexibility and problem-solving can become key coping strategies to help you feel – and be – in control. “During this time of pandemic, the idea of being flexible – having the insight to change your expectations based on the ever-changing landscape – will prove invaluable to you. Extending grace towards unmet deadlines, delayed deliveries, unfulfilled guarantees and the like would probably result in more stability and happiness in your life,” said Swan.

The pandemic has created new paradigms for parenting In many households, the change in routine means drastically new understanding of roles. “Tasks that have normally been the responsibility of one of the parents is now becoming the task of the other and suddenly we are beginning to

8

Finding ways to balance work life, personal life and school during the pandemic.

appreciate how hard our spouse or significant others have been working,” said Swan. Children especially are experiencing the increased presence of both parents in the home due to quarantine and this has changed the family dynamic a great deal. “What was once a ‘mommy issue’ is suddenly something that can also be brought to daddy, too. This change cannot help but alter the dynamic between mom and dad. On one hand, it may create more of a team feeling as they move more into a coparenting role, or it could create more stress as they work to figure out authority roles,” said Swan.

Teachers and parents are learning a lot about each other, too The pandemic has given many parents a new appreciation for the education process and the challenges

that teachers face in the classroom. “Granted, it’s not the way anyone would have liked for it to happen, but hopefully this situation will do more to strengthen the trust and respect that we show our teachers moving forward,” said Swan.

Single adults are facing a whole different set of new challenges Although sitcoms and movies about the suburbs may suggest otherwise, the average person gets a big happiness boost from spending time with their spouse. And while the average single person may enjoy living on their own, the coronavirus pandemic is testing their fortitude. “One of the hardest hit populations has been the young adults. Quarantines and restrictions on gatherings of people have further reduced opportunities they might have to be around other people.

This has the possibility to create a very lonely and isolated place that the single person must be active to avoid,” said Swan.

Balance is the key Balancing work and home life is never easy – but it’s especially important during this pandemic. Fortunately, there are certain strategies we can all employ to help find the right balance, including: 3 Take care of your body. Practice deep breathing. Meditate. Eat healthy, well-balanced meals, exercise and get plenty of sleep. 3 Keep connected to friends and family through social media, texting, phone calls or video chats. These get-togethers can be informal or organized into social events. 3 Practice self-compassion. During these difficult times, try to treat

yourself with kindness and understanding. “Balance as a principle in health is paramount. What is true for the physical body is also true to the mental and spiritual body. Finding a balance with your work and home life is crucial to feeling complete and whole as a person. You must actively participate in changing your life to make it better,” said Swan.

Matthew Swan, MD, Primary Care, AdventHealth Medical Group With experience in both internal medicine and oncology, Dr. Swan is uniquely qualified to provide care for patients with a wide range of health needs, from complex medical conditions to chronic disease management to routine preventive or acute care. Dr. Swan earned his medical degree from the University of Kansas School of Medicine and completed his residency, including service as chief resident, at Saint Joseph Hospital in Denver, Colo.

Ask the Doctor

Kelsi Drummond, MD, OB/GYN, on how blood pressure affects pregnancy. Why is high blood pressure a problem during pregnancy? High blood pressure in pregnancy places extra strain on the heart and the kidneys and can increase a woman’s risk for heart disease, kidney disease and stroke. It may also cause increased risk of problems in pregnancy including slow growth of the baby, early delivery, preeclampsia and placental abruption (when the placenta separates from the uterus before the baby is born).

What should someone with high blood pressure do to prepare for pregnancy? It is important to work with your doctor prior to pregnancy to get good control of your blood pressure. This always includes a healthy diet and exercise and may also include blood pressure medications. If you are already taking blood pressure medicine, it may be necessary to change

10

AdventHealth | Fall 2020

your medication to something that is safe in pregnancy.

How would someone know if she develops hypertension during pregnancy? This is where your OB/GYN comes in! Blood pressure monitoring is one of the reasons why prenatal visits occur so frequently in pregnancy.

Is it safe to take blood pressure medication during pregnancy? There are several medications that are safe to use in pregnancy, but there are also some medications that should be avoided. Your doctor can help make sure you are on a safe and effective medication.

What happens when a pregnant woman is diagnosed with preeclampsia? Preeclampsia is the combination of high blood pressure and organ dysfunction in pregnancy and is a serious condition affecting the health the mother and her baby. Sometimes when preeclampsia is diagnosed delivery of your baby will need to happen right away. Other times preeclampsia can be monitored closely.

Is someone with high blood pressure able to breastfeed her baby? Absolutely! The blood pressure medications that are safe to use in pregnancy are also safe for breastfeeding.

The Facts

What is Intuitive Eating? Learning to eat intuitively can help you establish (or re-establish) a healthy relationship with food while respecting your body and your health. Interested in ditching diets for good and trying intuitive eating? Here are some tips to help you get started. Step 1: Ditch the diet mentality Our society tends to be highly focused on weight and the latest diet to help with weight loss. Unfortunately, this often forces us to stop respecting and listening to our bodies in the process. With intuitive eating, the goal is not weight loss. It’s caring for your body and developing a healthy relationship with food. Step 2: Break extreme restrictive behaviors Overly restrictive eating almost always leads to bingeing. When we live with strict food rules and deny ourselves the foods we crave, we end up wanting them even more. When we finally break, we tend to have less self-control than we would if we allowed ourselves to have these foods any time. This typically leads to a vicious cycle of restriction, followed by a binge, followed by guilt. Allowing yourself to have the snacks and sweets you crave on a more regular basis can help you feel more in control around them. Step 3: Find your balance Intuitive eating is about making nutritious foods an enjoyable part of your everyday lifestyle. While

it’s important to eat a wide variety of healthy, whole foods, the key is to learn how to incorporate and prepare these foods in ways that excite your individual taste. That’s why you won’t see a set-in-stone meal plan for intuitive eating. At its core, intuitive eating is personal. It’s a way to develop a positive relationship with nutritious foods while still enjoying your favorite snacks and sweets when it feels right to you. Intuitive eating is more about focusing on the overall quality of your diet rather than the number on the scale or calories consumed. You don’t have to eat perfectly healthy 100 percent of the time to achieve better health. Gradual, lasting changes can yield big results!

Intuitive eating is:

3 Using internal cues to guide you regarding when, what, and how much to eat. 3 Honoring your hunger and feeling your fullness. 3 Learning to make peace with all types of food. 3 Giving yourself grace if/ when you overeat. 3 Rejecting diet culture and embracing your natural body shape. 3 Enjoying a wide variety of foods. 3 Understanding how to prepare healthful foods you enjoy eating. 3 Discovering foods that make you feel physically well and nourish your body. 3 Recognizing that food/ nutrition are an important part of your life, but not the only important part. Intuitive eating is not:

3 Only eating at certain times of day.

3 Restricting calories and/or Authored by Shanna Hutcheson
