The Headmaster's Gala As you can imagine, David & Lynn are incredibly grateful to all those who have supported the Headmater's Gala on Saturday at the Empress Hotel. It was a lovely evening of celebration and success on so many levels. $1,356,865 was raised towards the Robertson Family Scholarship Fund. Thank you to all who supported this meaningful initiative, leaving a welldeserved legacy to David & Lynn for their 25 years of service to the School.

A collection of photos from David and Lynn's farewell tour in Asia. It was great to visit with so many alum in Seoul, Suzhou, Shanghai, and Hong Kong. David and Lynn were honoured to be so warmly received.

Alumni Updates Mashi Akiyama '85 (Copeman's)

Blade Runner 2049 is the first show I’ve been involved in

that has won an Oscar. I was the Previz Lead on the Montreal end where I had seven artists under my wing, and we coordinated with a smaller three‑person team on set in Budapest. Moving Picture Company (MPC) handled the post‑ production visual effects for just over 40 shots digitally replacing Rachael's head, and I feel those shots were the ones that tipped the scales in the film’s favour. I had wanted to pursue a visual effects career since my dad took me to see Star Wars in 1977. I enrolled in the 3D Animation program at VFS and, after graduation, I got a job at Mainframe Entertainment working on Reboot (the world's first all CG TV program) before moving into VFX and cinematic animation. It wasn't until the fall of 2013 that I got my first gig at MPC as a Previz Artist. After two years working between the previs and layout departments, I got the call to work on Blade Runner 2049. That job led me to a Lead Layout Artist gig on Pirates of the Caribbean 5 in Montreal. Then, in early October, I was offered the position of Head of Layout at MPC Montreal. My wife and I will be finalizing the move from the West Coast early this summer.

The Admissions team is hitting the road! We would greatly appreciate you thinking about any families you know in the areas below that may be interested in learning more about Shawnigan and meeting with an Admissions representative in person.

"Legacy Matters" As a relative newcomer to the School, please let me introduce myself to readers of the Alumni News. I work in the Advancement Office and lead the School's Legacy Giving program – an area of philanthropy we encourage alumni, parents and staff to support. In this space I'll offer readers a regular column, focusing on Legacy Giving. As much has been written on this topic, I wish to offer insights, share valuable articles, share your stories and provide an opinion, when appropriate, on how our community can become more engaged. Naturally, I encourage you to get in touch with me directly should you have a more immediate need or question. What Will Your Legacy Be? Every day I find there are news stories that cause me to think about my own legacy. How did I get to where I am today? Who helped me along the way? Who can I help – or what can I do to give someone else the opportunities I have enjoyed? These questions become more pointed, when I consider others less fortunate or those who have had their lives torn apart. News from the Middle East and more recently from Humboldt Saskatchewan focuses my mind much more vividly. Naturally, I want to ensure I take care of my family first. But can I do more? Do my spouse and I have the same thoughts on Legacy Giving? I haven't got all the answers but I do know it's a journey I need to take as I age, as I watch my parents age and as I come facetoface with members of the SLS community who invariably are asking similar questions. Did Shawnigan Lake School help to shape the person you have become? Is there a path you followed because you were inspired by an amazing teacher, coach, Head of House, mentor or fellow classmate? Please share with me the answers you reach. What Is A Legacy Gift? There are so many different forms of Legacy Gifts, I cannot, in the space available give it satisfactory justice. Over time, however, I plan to introduce some of the more familiar avenues philanthropists have chosen. One common denominator is that a Legacy Gift is one which is planned today to be realized by the charitable organization in the future. By discussing the topic of Legacy Giving, it is my hope that I will engage your curiosity in order for you to consider how you can help shape those organizations that have shaped you. It may be your spiritual organization, your university or a social service organization in your community. What's important is to recognize that it is incumbent upon all of us to plan for a potential future gift to organizations we care about and wish to see flourish long after we have passed. Hilary S. Abbott, (250) 7436236 habbott@shawnigan.ca
