The Annual Fund

Both of our children received bursaries to come to Shawnigan. If they hadn’t they would not have come. The opportunities our children had at Shawnigan were tremendous. Because of those opportunities, they both grew and gained confidence and leadership skills. There is a mutual level of respect among the teachers, staff and students — a great life lesson. At Shawnigan, the level and quality of programs are endless: fine arts, sports and more — there’s so much to choose. Such offerings build character. Shawnigan has given so much to our family. To be able to see another family benefit would be great. Shawnigan can make their lives better and richer.

We give what we can. — Tracy Boulter former parent

Every year the Annual Fund offers our alumni, parents and friends an opportunity to play a bigger role in the lives of Shawnigan’s students. The donations received support various needs at the School. Most importantly, in a group of four students, one of them is at Shawnigan thanks to your gift to the Annual Fund.

We give back. Going into Grade 8, I was a boy who had never experienced being away from home for long periods of time. Learning to be independent and responsible for my actions was a challenge — back at home, life was easy as my parents were always there to help. During my career at Shawnigan, many people have had a lasting impact on me. Mr. Coy, my Lonsdale’s House Director for five years, has seen my growth at a personal level. Ms. Tyrrell pushed me to a musical level I didn’t know I could reach. My roommate, Nicky, and I survived five winter terms, countless touch rugby games, getting Sushi from Teriyaki Joe’s, helping each other with prep, helping new boys overcome homesickness and chatting as only best friends can. Without the opportunities offered by the school, I would not have been able to go on EDGE Thailand, the England, Wales & South Africa Rugby Tours, the Senior Boys Basketball and Rugby Provincial Championships. They were wonderful additions to what I experienced on campus: showing me different parts of the world, meeting people who lived completely different lives to mine, and learning to live, work and play with my schoolmates outside of the Shawnigan community. I definitely want other students to experience this too.

Your donation is the reason students have so many opportunities to learn, grow and build confidence. Every donation, regardless of the amount, makes an impact. Join one of our faculty members who contributes $10 per month for the EDGE service trips to ensure no one is left out of the opportunity to participate.

My Annual Fund gift always goes toward financial aid. Through my gift, it is especially meaningful to help a student experience the wonders of a Shawnigan Ski Week. As a former student, this outdoor community experience was pivotal in helping me make Shawnigan my home away from home.

THANK YOU!

Now, as a teacher and passionate organizer of Ski Week, I help in any way I can to ensure others can have a similar, transformational experience. — Nigel Mayes ’89 Faculty, Head of Science
