PATCHWORK CITY
Sketches & First Thoughts
City of Layers My city is the city of layers; layers that have been formed over time with changing circumstances, politics, needs, and technology. The mix of these layers gives the city its unique identity and liveliness, keeping the city alive and vibrant. The city keeps changing; new layers are added, some old layers start to fade and pieces of them start to dissolve and disappear under the others. Each new piece finds its place next to, on top of or under the existing. My proposed future sustainable city also finds its position on the others as a new layer. It is conscious of having to find its place among the existing layers, but has the courage and power to change the city as a whole. It affects and changes the existing while at the same time being open to change. The new city is the city of webs and links. It is a new way of experiencing the city as a 3D world, making transportation more efficient. There is no need for wide and congested roads anymore; the city offers new functions for the space left behind.

HETEROTOPIA
Group-A is looking for heterotopias in West London... We began walking in the west of London and discovered bubbles of spaces which are almost floating. Though they are physically within the urban boundary something places them to the psychological outside. They exist with invisible boundaries around themselves and sometimes define themselves with it. The first place we discovered is a museum. The second is a Japanese community and Japanese temple around Acton. Third is a busy shopping street and a shopping mall. Fourth is an Indian neighbourhood in Wembley. They all exist in a different space and time within the city. In order to express the idea of invisible boundary which we called “bubbles of spaces for duality and contradictions, the reality and unreality; we tried to reflect the four specific places through glass, mirror, body of a car, or surface of a cell phone.

Searching for a site to address city scale problems Analysing city’s transport systems Setting a goal and defining statement of intent Analysing city’s rapid growth and consequences Analysis of Kucuk Armutlu and Karanfilkoy shanty towns and their surroundings
LOOKING FOR BOUNDARIES
First Statement of Intent I would like to discover the clash and overlap between the public and private realm from pedestrian scale to urban scale and where the connections lie question the definition of the boundaries propose flexible solutions where boundaries can be stretched and spaces can be merged from one another while integrating the advantages of different areas to each other

DIFFERENT TYPOLOGIES AND USES ON SITE
LEVENT SITE ANALYSIS
SITE ANALYSIS & FIRST DESIGN PROPOSAL
Buyukdere Street: 8-lane road separating Levent into two
West Levent: Low income residential area. Ex-shanty town.
Organic street structure. Dense urban fabric with six or seven storey apartment buildings and no open spaces. Lively commercial streets. Organised weekly street markets.
Central Levent: Central business district. Divided by Buyukdere Street. High-rise and skyscraper corporate business buildings. No public space. Unfriendly streets. Most open spaces are car parks.
East Levent: High income residential area. Small scale one or
two storey houses with private gardens. Well maintained streets. Empty public parks with no attraction. Individual private sports and social clubs.
Walls of Levent: Astonishing physical boundaries between the
low income residential neighbourhood and central business district

Setting a Goal
Creating a vibrant dense mixed use sustainable environment with significant open spaces to make a more desirable Levent, thus reducing the number of commuters from east to west and easing the city’s traffic congestion

FROM CONCEPT TO DETAIL
Ismet inonu Street for Cours Mirabeau typology
Levent’s new boulevard for the Ramblas typology
Assigning character to two main streets in the proposal: The two main streets in the proposal were inspired by the Ramblas and Cours Mirabeau, two famously successful streets.
N
New street network: Proposed streets are well integrated with the existing street structure. Existing straight CBD road structure Existing organic road structure Proposed road structure
Levent new boulevard location
N
Levent’s new boulevard and the Ramblas comparison: The new boulevard is designed for people to be on, to walk, to meet and to talk. The Ramblas is successful in this goal. The Ramblas runs approximately 1.1 kms , starting and finishing with a major active node. This corresponds to the proposed Levent Boulevard.

Merging divided blocks with envelope concept: This attempt was soon considered inadequate. Although the envelope corresponded to the existing building heights and open spaces, the direct application resulted with a block typology that is alien to the existing dynamic fabric.

BUILDING ENTRANCES AND COMMERCIAL LINES APPLIED FROM CONCEPT TO DETAIL
First attempt for the block typology application along the site: The first attempt proposed a separated pedestrian route between the blocks which was soon abandoned. This approach thought to be not appropriate for a good integration with the existing road structure and not suitable for the existing street culture.
