As spring edges towards summer, it’s nearly impossible to not feel a sense of optimism. The trees are in glorious bloom, neighbors are sprucing up their yards, and businesses are setting out their patio furniture. Throughout this issue, I hope you enjoy the features on local services and news. The Chamber is a proud champion of our community and we are all looking forward to the coming season. As you consider where to go and what to eat this summer, you may want to check out the Chamber’s Facebook Group Eat Local • Mason County (facebook.com/groups/mcfood). Originally, we set up this group to provide a platform for restaurants to share their delivery and takeout options when the pandemic shut them down for dine-in service. Now, it’s a great source of photos, menus, and people sharing what they like most about the offerings of different restaurants.

Our Mason County Job Seekers group (facebook.com/groups/ masoncountyjobseekers/) now has more than 3,000 members. Businesses, whether or not they are yet Chamber members, may post their job openings—although posts may only be made for hourly or salaried positions. Just today, 12 new job postings were shared on this group. Potential employees can also ask group members about specific careers that they are interested in. Local companies are actively hiring across all industries and the Chamber is committed to supporting workforce development and this is a great resource for job seekers and employers alike.
When browsing either of these groups, we ask that you be kind. Businesses have had an extremely difficult year; these are forums for positive conversation, information sharing, and uplifting support. We always suggest that if you have concerns, you speak directly to management. Lastly, I’m glad to share that our Hoodsport Visitor Center is open for business! We welcome you to consult our knowledgeable staff and volunteers about summer recreational opportunities. At this time, we are open Thursday through Monday from 9:00a-4:00p. Whether you’re looking for hiking locations, bird watching vistas, or recommendations on where to go for dinner, these folks have great tips and tricks.
Mission driving our work Melanie Bakala, Chamber Board President 2021. Owner, Bakala State Farm Catalyst. Convener. Champion. This is the mission that drives the work of our Chamber every day. In April, a smaller than usual group gathered to celebrate businesses, organizations, and volunteers who are doing great things in our community. It was a great evening and attendees enjoyed the ability to gather for the first time in over a year.
In April, we partnered with the Olympia Master Builders to advocate further and engage in a productive conversation with the leader of Community Development, Planning, and Permitting of Mason County Kell Rowan. Over the last month, we have seen Rowan’s department make strides in identifying and correcting the issues that have been contributing to the delays.
We have joined in Washington Hospitality Association’s call to ask our Governor to release a plan to reopen our State. Our restaurant and hospitality members have been severely impacted by the pandemic, and while many states have announced plans to reopen, Washington’s only plan has to do with moving backward.
Under the leadership of Sierra Pacific’s Lisa Perry, the Chambers’ Government Affairs Committee is now meeting with representatives from Mason County, City of Shelton, and the Port of Shelton several times a year to hear what these groups are working on and have open conversations about moving the community forward.
For over a year, we have been working with the Mason County Commissioners to address long wait times on building permits.
Even though it might not always be visible, your Chamber is consistently advocating for the businesses of Mason County.

Hood Canal Communications
Expands Broadband Speed and Service Family-owned, independent cable and broadband provider Hood Canal Communications has been awarded a grant from the WA Public Works Board to bring broadband connectivity to the Mason/Thurston County border. The project is estimated to cost more than half a million dollars and 80% is funded through grant dollars. The project will be built using high-speed fiber optic lines, extending fiber to the home.
are complete and following an environmental review and acceptance of permits, HCC can immediately begin construction.
“We’re thrilled to be bringing this level of connectivity to these underserved residents and businesses,” says Vice President & General Manager Mike Oblizalo. “Washington State’s goal is to bring 150 Mbps service to all residences. HCC is surpassing that to bring Gigabit (1,000 Mbps) service to this area for optimal experience and futureproofing.”
The added gigabit connectivity will be powered by HCC’s internet backbone, the is the largest and fastest internet backbone in Mason County. Backbone connections are used to connect a local internet service provider’s network facility to the rest of the world. This backbone connection allows users to access websites and other online resources anywhere. HCC first looked at increasing the speed of its backbone connections over a year ago, with an eye on future growth in its existing customer base and a desire to create the infrastructure needed to support further economic growth in the area.
This project will be built along Strong Road, Vineyard Drive, Osprey Lane, Angel Way, and Sonja Lane. All residences and businesses in the build area will be offered high speed broadband service from 25 MBPS up to 1 Gigabit service, as well as IPTV and telephone service over HCC’s Fiber to the Home network. Project walk out, design, and engineering
HCC’s backbone infrastructure upgrade and Public Works Board grant add to the company’s track record of connecting underserved communities. HCC recently completed its Connect Cushman grant to build a broadband network, a $2.3 million project mostly funded by the US Department of Agriculture’s Rural Utilities Service Community Connect Grant program.
Page 4 - Business Matters
“Upgrading our backbone infrastructure was a major step forward for rural broadband and connecting our community with the rest of the world,” Oblizalo said. “Knowing that those stable, highspeed connections are available has paved the way for opportunities like our current Public Works Board grant.” The new high-speed internet connections support HCC’s existing 6,300+ broadband subscribers with improved network performance and reliability, while also positioning Mason County as an attractive destination for commercial growth and new business development. The increased connection speed also gives the opportunity to expand its network’s co-hosting facilities, with enough bandwidth to power remote servers for any high-tech companies that might consider establishing a corporate foothold in the area. In today’s world, access to broadband has become critical. With offices located in Union and Shelton, HCC has been serving Mason County since 1934. WHAT IS THE BOISE DECISION?
On September 4, 2018, the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed that a municipality may not “criminalize conduct that is an unavoidable consequence of being homeless—namely sitting, lying, or sleeping on the streets” when there are more homeless persons than available shelter beds or in the absence of other adequate alternatives. The decision stemmed from a 2009 lawsuit brought by six homeless residents of Idaho’s capital city. For months, city leaders were unsure whether the ruling would be successfully challenged in court. But in December 2019, the U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear the case and let the appellate court decision stand in the 9th Circuit, which encompasses Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon and Washington. Simply put, the decision means that if a person is asked to leave public space, he or she has the right to ask where they can go, instead. If there is no other place to lawfully go, and are violating no other law, then there is a right to refuse to move. Because of this, cities across the nation have been grappling with elaborate campsites in full daylight in public places.
Holly Cahoon, a 3rd generation Shelton salon owner in downtown Shelton across from Post Office Park. “Sometimes it’s not an issue. Other times, they are doing drugs, having sex; plenty of things that I, my staff, and my clients do not wish to see. I have exterior spigots that I used to water our flower planters. While I don’t mind someone helping themselves to an occasional drink, I was finally forced to install locks after finding the faucets left flowing overnight a few times. I’m still seeing them tampered with and water left running; you can imagine how much that costs me.”
Once upon a time, the police department came and had troublemakers move along upon citizen’s request, but in light of the Boise decision, Police Chief Beason says that SPD’s hands are tied. “If there isn’t a place for them to go, we are legally bound to let them remain.” In search of solutions, one idea being explored by City of Shelton manager Jeff Niten is a homeless shelter. “There are a few spots that we’ve considered for a permanent shelter for those in need of housing. In the past two years, Crossroads Housing has gone from supporting 50 households to more than 400, but it cannot keep up. Until there is a place for people to ‘move along to,’ we have no ground to stand on. An interim consideration is a

temporary homeless camp.”
A potential short-term mitigation site is being considered at Railroad Avenue near 12th Street. “This isn’t a permanent solution, but it at least gives a location for people to go. Building a shelter takes time,” Niten says. Business owner Dean Jewett doesn’t like the idea. “Railroad Avenue close to the domestic violence shelter?! I do not support this idea in any form,” he says. But advocates say it’s a step in the right direction.
For several years, city council and city staff have focused on identifying solutions that the community will support that will also help the greatest number of people. Niten shares, “There is a compassionate component of providing shelter. There is also an accountability component and we currently don’t have an answer to address it.” He pointed out that a short-term mitigation site is one potential solution to the problems that some local businesses and their patrons are experiencing. He emphasized that it is important for all solutions to be explored and fully vetted and invited residents to contact him directly with ideas or concerns. To that end, the Chamber will continue to follow this and other ideas, propose solutions, and support innovative answers.

Beautification The hopeful, sunny days this spring seem to have many residents looking ahead to the summer season. The Chamber began receiving phone calls and walk-ins in April from folks asking if the oversized flower baskets will be going up again this year. Yes… and very soon! Call it small town. Call it curbside appeal. Call it classy. The bright blooms that adorn city streets and gateways offer a warm welcome to visitors and enhance the thoroughfares traveled by residents daily. Now a staple of charm and hospitality, the Chamber added the flower baskets to its annual program in 1999. There is a tremendous cost in materials, maintenance, and manpower to upkeep the summer and winter décor and funding for this program is raised exclusively through our annual campaign. The Chamber relies on the generosity of our community to help us make this point of pride a reality. Donations can be made toward beautification overall or, for $275 each, an individual flower basket can be sponsored by a business or designated in memoriam of a loved one. The amount collected this year will determine how many baskets will be hung the following year. Please consider making a gift to helps us meet our $20,000 goal!
Already, the Chamber introduced a flower basket sale with our partners at Tozier Brothers Ace Hardware which allowed individuals to purchase smaller versions of the gorgeous baskets to enjoy at their own home or business. 150 sold in just one week to kick start the 2021 fundraising campaign. Watch your mail and social media feeds for ways to contribute to our campaign in the coming weeks. Gifts of any amount are appreciated! You can support beautification by donating online via PayPal at masonchamber.com/beautification or by sending a check to Shelton-Mason County Chamber Foundation, PO Box 2389, Shelton, WA 98584. Every dollar is tax deductible now
that the Chamber has formed its own 501(c)(3) charitable foundation. Hanging the flower baskets and trimming the town in Christmas USA is no small task. The Chamber is grateful to community partners— City of Shelton, Green Diamond Resource Company, Hood Canal Communications, Mason PUD 3, and Skookum Rotary—who support these efforts year after year. Our appreciation extends to each business, service organization, and individual who provides financial support for this program. Chamber Convenes In November of last year, the Chamber began exploring opportunities to convene a childcare task force, recognizing that childcare has long been an issue for many working families that is further strained under the ongoing pandemic restrictions.
Childcare Task Force
The first meeting was held in mid-December between the leadership teams from Mason, Thurston, Grays Harbor and Lewis Counties. The leadership teams are countywide and are comprised of Chamber CEOs and representatives from the Child Care Action Council and South Sound YMCA. At that meeting, potential committee members were identified with an intentional focus on collaborating employers, non-profit and community organizations, childcare providers, and parents. The task force continues to meet regularly and plans to make its final recommendations at the end of June. In a recent survey of working parents, 91% of participants answered that their children receive childcare, or they are actively seeking childcare. The needs assessment identified issues ranging from affordability and lack of openings to health concerns and location/transportation challenges. Recommendations from the regional task force will likely approach strategies to improve access and funding, support childcare businesses, possible employer actions, and state support. It is the anticipated that the findings will help form the state’s priorities in addressing childcare inadequacies and implementing actionable solutions. The Chamber will continue to post information to masonchamber.com as it becomes available.
Task Force Objectives Assess needs and gaps and plan for and support recovery, growth, and success of childcare providers in our region – learn from presentations on childcare needs from existing data and surveys of parents and employers. Develop near- and medium-term action plans for more accessible and affordable childcare in our counties, including support existing providers to recover from COVID challenges, specifically to understand and address specific local access barriers and capacity gaps and to build ongoing partnerships and link systems to address local pre-k and school aged care issues. Connect and learn together with other childcare task forces in our greater region and across the state.

Chamber, Master Builders Push Permitting Concerns In the midst of 2020’s pandemic restrictions, we saw many employees working remotely, doing their best to keep up with the workload as their environment and tools changed (and changed often). This, of course, caused delays, backlogs, and a fractured process for many organizations. Quite possibly, Mason County’s permitting department displayed the worst of these. The Chamber reached out to Mason County Commissioners at the beginning of 2020 to find a solution, as the inefficiencies in the building department are known and ongoing issue. The response was a reorganization of the department putting Kell Rowan at the head of Community Development, Planning, and Permitting—a great first step. However, amidst the perfect storm of the already existing delays, compounded by the challenges presented by the pandemic, in addition to increased— sometimes nearly doubled—building permit submissions, county staff lagged. At times, it was months before applicants would receive an email invitation. This email was only an appointment time to submit the building permit, which would start the clock ticking for permit approval, often lingering two or three more months.
On April 1, the Chamber and Mason County Master Builders hosted a virtual meeting to reiterate concerns and push for a resolution. While acknowledging the strides that county staff has made so far, the messaged remained clear: fix the broken submission system. Since that meeting, several issues have been addressed and some solutions have been found.
select open appointment dates online. The hope is to have that process fully implemented this month.
been filled. Permitting staff is currently working with IT and the software company to address these issues.
The first solution was to move forward with scheduling appointments for building permit submittals. After the April meeting, staff’s priority was to get everyone who requested an appointment on the schedule. Rowan reports that this has been accomplished. Since then, scheduling appointments for submittals has assigned to clerical staff, not a permit tech. This simple change has expedited scheduling and freed up technical staff’s time to focus on reviews, meetings, and inspections.
A second change is how inspections are coordinated. Although the mechanism to schedule online has been implemented, it is currently undergoing analysis. A few problems have been identified. First, the system does not automatically select email confirmations and notifications, making an onerous process for applicants. Another issue is that while the system allows online scheduling, it does not consider staff’s availability. An issue arose as one could select a date for an inspection that inspectors were not in the specified area.
Rowan reports that in May, a team participated in the Lean process with the Washington State Auditor’s Office. While this creates temporary local delays, utilizing this process to identify and address pressure points and create a smoother process and path forward.
County staff is averaging 8-9 requests per day, an increased workload from prior months. However, those requests are now being met with a scheduled appointment within days. In addition to this, permitting staff worked with the county’s IT Department and are currently testing scheduling software, which should allow people to self-
Lastly, the online schedule is not completely current. Clerical staff receives an email from the online submission and then must input it into the live calendar. This creates a situation when staff may receive the email the following business day after inspections were scheduled over the phone and the previously “open” time has already

The Chamber is appreciative of the partnership with Master Builders in advocating for the builders, developers, and residents who are investing in growing our community. We also thank Rowan and her team for prioritizing a solution—and the County Commissioners for supplying the resources to carry it out. Over the past month, there has been marked commitment to identify, address, and correct the problems and issues. The Chamber will continue to monitor progress, engage with stakeholders, and update our members as the process continues in the upcoming months.

Last year was a tough year. I mean, it was TOUGH tough. That said, there were several areas where I believe that the Chamber overcame and succeeded although it was a difficult hand that we were dealt. Here are the top five successes that the Chamber Team accomplished.
Providing Critical Content
When the world stopped turning and we were all sent home, Chamber staff immediately dove into regulations, restrictions, and requirements that were changing on a daily (if not hourly) basis. Staff became quasi-experts of the newly implemented protocols and relief packages. Additionally, a Back to Business Toolkit was developed to ensure required documentation was easily accessible to our businesses.
Creating Partnerships
The Chamber reached out directly and immediately to our partners—including the North Mason Chamber, EDC, WA Department of Commerce, US Chamber, and others—to bring insight and experts to define the rapidly changing landscape. Hosting weekly webinars for the first six weeks of the shutdown, the Chamber provided crucial information covering Unemployment Insurance, CARES Funding, and more. The Chamber continued holding programs throughout the year and currently holds a monthly virtual meeting on topics of interest to local entrepreneurs.
Promotion on Social Platforms
-Mother Teresa
Immediately recognizing the hardships that the hospitality industry was undergoing, Chamber staff created a Facebook Group to focus on restaurant offerings. Within two weeks, nearly 2,000 followers had joined Eat Local • Mason County, actively posting photos, menus, and giving rave reviews while sharing favorite eats to support local restaurants. Additionally, the Chamber administers the Mason County Job Seekers group with more than 3,000 people actively sharing job information, open positions, and training opportunities.
Communications & Outreach
The Chamber acknowledged that conditions were changing rapidly and pivoted. Instead of Business Matters being printed quarterly we increased to monthly issues during the summer. We also reformatted the electronic newsletter from a weekly update filled with events and news, to a monthly edition focused on advocacy, recent changes, and information our members need to know.
Galvanizing People
Realizing that people desperately needed to be able to look ahead and hold onto the positive, the Chamber partnered to present Spooktacular outdoors, published a safe activities holiday map, and provided a sneak peek of the YMCA. We revived the Christmas lights competition, housed a gingerbread contest, campaigned folks to Shop Local, and connected landowners and volunteers to harvest trees for the Christmastown maze. We championed extending the décor season to “Keep Spirits Bright” a little longer.

McCutcheon Leads, Transforms For a decade now, Heidi McCutcheon has faithfully served the Chamber and the larger community. The board recently celebrated her work anniversary and gratefully acknowledged the achievements secured under her strong leadership. McCutcheon was born and raised in Shelton. She is a proud Shelton High School graduate and attended the University of Washington before transferring to Concordia University where she earned a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration with a focus on Marketing & Economics. She put that degree to good work in the real estate industry, working for a title & escrow company in Thurston County before attaining a real estate license in 2006. Three years later, she and her husband Brad moved back to Shelton and she began working for the Shelton-Mason County Chamber part time in addition to being full time Realtor. In 2010, McCutcheon was promoted to head the Chamber. In addition to those responsibilities, she has volunteered on numerous community boards—Mason General Hospital Foundation, Union Tourism Association, Olympic Peninsula Culinary Loop, Shelton School District’s Career

and Technical Education Advisory Committee, United Way of Mason County, Childcare Task Force, Workforce Housing Task Force, and Skookum Rotary’s OysterFest, to name a few.
McCutcheon has been recognized for her strong sense of community pride and excellence in building partnerships to advance the local area.
Leadership is the capacity to translate vision into reality. —Warren Bennis
“She always keeps the Chamber and the community in focus, working tirelessly behind the scenes to accomplish more together. She bravely confronts the issues that matter and is known for her no-nonsense attitude and incredible work ethic,” Board President Melanie Bakala stated at the Awards Gala.
McCutcheon has received many well-deserved accolades along the way. She was honored as “40 under Forty” by South Sound Business Examiner in 2017 and has been tapped to serve on the boards of both Washington Chamber of Commerce Executives and Western Association of Chamber Executives. Although there are too many to list, a few of the most notable successes over the past decade
include: moving to a tiered dues structure; spearheading the Shelton Downtown Visioning Plan; expanding the Chamber’s newsletter to Business Matters, implementing an annual member survey; ongoing workforce development efforts; expanding tourism services; rebranding and launching a new website; and developing a Public Policy Handbook. The Chamber has grown to nearly 400 members, representing 6,000+ employees. That, in itself, is a testament to McCutcheon’s leadership and the strong reputation the Chamber has earned during her tenure. She has transformed the Chamber to one that is truly a Catalyst for business growth, a Convener of leaders and influencers, and a Champion of the community.

Families of the Forest Will Revel All Summer Long Mason County Forest Festival is a local tradition, held the weekend after Memorial Day for kicking off the summer season. This showcase of our area’s timber heritage and forest traditions draws countless locals and visitors annually. Last year, the entire lineup of events was cancelled due to COVID. Organizers will present Timber Days this year—a summer long series to safely extend some family-friendly fun. The royalty coronation took place in March and named the 2021 Court: Queen of the Forest Izzabella Hiatt-Jackson, Paul Bunyan Michael Gilman, Princess of Cedar Wesley Harmon, Princess of Hemlock Sierra Sevrance, and Timber the Axe Man Emmett Byrz-Gornia. These student representatives earned scholarships along with their titles. Too, the button competition is complete! This year’s design “Families of the Forest,” was created by Mason County 9th grader Wyatt Wagner. This commemorative flair is available for purchase at area businesses and at the Chamber office. All proceeds support the event’s nonprofit association. Throughout the summer, enjoy live music, food, crafts, and games from 6:00-9:00p followed by the screening of a classic movie. Save the dates: June 4 & 5, July 30 & 31, and August 20 & 21. The typical Goldsborough Creek Run/Walk/Jog has been replaced this year by Run the Ridge at Ridge Motorsports Park. The event, sponsored by the MGHF Centennial Guild, will be held on June 5. All age groups and abilities are invited to participate in either a 5K, 10K, or quarter mile “Junior Jog” for children ages 3 to 8. This Shelton Car Showoff will carry on… virtually. Although cars will not be lined down main street this year, the Shelton High School NJROTC Boosters created a way for motor enthusiasts to still feature their classic and show cars. Participate by viewing and voting for your favorite entries online through June 4! The festivities will continue with Christmas in July on the final weekend of July. Among other things, a Queen’s Tea will take place in the garden at the Colonial House for little princesses. Then, August will provide more activities, designed to highlight fire safety. Timber Days will culminate with the Firefighters Pancake Breakfast with Central Mason Fire & EMS, the Family & Pet and Paul Bunyan Grand Parades, Kristmas Town Kiwanis Duck Race, and Fireworks Display. Additional details will be released along the way and there are lots of opportunities to participate, sponsor, and volunteer. You can find more information online at masoncountyforestfestival.com and follow Forest Festival on Facebook.

erent Dynamic, Different Learning Option Cedar High School opened in the fall of 2020. A sibling to Shelton and Choice High Schools, Cedar is a separate and dynamic new option for students in the Shelton School District who value and thrive in a hands-on, collaborative learning environment. Cedar will appeal to individuals who want a smaller, personalized approach that is centered on students. “We don’t use textbooks,” says the school’s principal, Amber Hosford. “The curriculum is learning based and has a unique approach. We grade the students on several different basis: knowledge & thinking, collaboration, agency, and oral & written communication skills. The students must show up to do well in this format because of the type of learning we utilize.”
In partnership with the New Tech Network, Cedar High School staff will offer classes team-taught in an interdisciplinary mode. This format allows students to see the connections between subjects and enables them to view the world in a more holistic manner. For instance, a student might take math and also receive an art credit if the curriculum introduces patterns and geometry such as mandalas. It’s a more immersive experience than a traditional math course. One perk for students attending Cedar is that their programs are held in cooperation with Olympic College. Beginning next school year, all of the classes will be held on the Olympic College Shelton campus, where students can earn stackable certificates and even college credit. This means that students can be on the campus and earning college credit while working toward their high
school diploma while taking an array of different courses. One of the major misconceptions about the school is that it is simply a renamed Choice High School. Although it was initially held in the same building as Choice, Cedar is a separate educational organization. “Cedar High school is its own entity,” says Hosford. “We recognized the need for a different instructional model. This is a niche to serve students to learn in a more applied environment. This is the kind of school I want my child to go to.” Enrollment is open now and more information can be found at cedar. sheltonschools.org, but Principal Hosford also welcomes those interested to contact her directly via email at ahosford@sheltonschools.org.
Shelton Youth Connection
Expands
FAMILY OWNED & OPERATED IN SHELTON FOR 38 YEARS
In 2018, the Shelton Family Center (SFC) was formed to provide connection for youth aged 12-24 needing a safe place to hang out. They began with an after-school program called “The Connection Point” at three local schools. Through this, SFC recognized there were youth yearning for connections to services to meet needs such as homelessness, hunger, family troubles, and domestic violence, to name just a few. The necessity of having a drop-in center became essential in helping these young people. In September 2019 SFC opened the Shelton Youth Connection (SYC), a drop-in center located at 123 S 2nd St in downtown Shelton, and began doing business under that name. SYC believed in the necessity of creating a safe place for youth to hang out, connect with each other and access support services. Director Susan Kirchoff observed “Young people can be wary of the support systems primarily designed for adults, as well as lack of consistent follow through. Building relationships is the first step to helping our youth feel hopeful.” The first week of May 2021, SFC celebrated opening their doors to the Belfair Youth Connection, located at 23299 NE State Route 3, effectively doubling their reach within Mason County. Both locations offer a variety support for local youth including daily lunches, access to computers and Wi-Fi, engaging in table talk, playing games, or just hanging out. They offer a large clothing and hygiene closet, as well as employment support, educational support, tutoring, and connections to support services which go a long way toward easing their burden. “Our focus is to meet youth and young adults where they are in the moment, help them to navigate life’s challenges and support their best possible outcome” stated Kirchoff. “Most of our young people lack the typical family networks that help guide them. We strive to become this network for the youth who come to our centers, hoping to encourage and assist their journey to becoming successful, self-sustaining members of the community.” A major barrier for many young adults is securing adequate housing. To that end, SYC requested support from Washington State Legislature to renovate their Shelton location, creating transitional housing for young adults who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. Representatives Drew MacEwen and Dan Griffey championed that effort and ultimately SYC received an allocation to fund their request. Residents of the transitional housing will receive intensive case management and supports providing access to job skills training, education and other needs to prevent long term homelessness. Donations are accepted at both locations from 12:00-4:30p on Wednesdays. You can find a list of the youth wants and needs which include clothing, snacks and lunch foods, entertainment and sports articles, maintenance items, and emergency and sanitary supplies; or you may make a financial contribution directly. For more information, visit sheltonyouthconnection.org or call (360) 462-0125.

amping Up Recommendations for Summer Season
Earlier this month, the Chamber convened a conversation on tourism, inviting experts in tourism to discuss “All Things Wild Side.” The program spotlighted all the incredible recreational opportunities, scenic views, countless activities, and history in Mason County. How many times have you someone complain there is ‘nothing to do’ here? In fact, there are incredible options to enjoy. Perhaps it is simply a matter of being too close to the forest to see the trees—no pun intended! Each year nearly 3 million visitors travel to Hood Canal. Many take to the great outdoors to hike, bird, or golf; while others embark on water adventures by boat, kayak, and Stand-Up Paddleboard; some adventures try skydiving, racing, or rail-riding; and still more bask in the luxury of culinary delights, winery
and distillery tours, and shopping and pampering along gorgeous vistas. Looking for inspiration? Check out explorehoodcanal.com for blogs, localized itineraries, and details on area lodging, dining, and activities. If you have friends or family visiting the area, stop in to one of the visitor information centers. The Caboose in Shelton offers a nod to the area’s roots and is augmented by the Chamber office located nearby. The Hoodsport Visitor Center also sells maps & passes to access stunning National Park, Forest Service, and State Park lands and houses a Wilderness Office during the summer months. The Chamber’s staff and volunteers keeps all three locations stocked with brochures, maps, guides, fact sheets, and area resources. And, of course, you can always pop-in or call for personalized recommendations. Call ahead or check online for current hours.
NOTICES Olympic National Forest has implemented a revised forest order that adds an alcohol ban to the existing prohibitions on camping, fires, and overnight parking along the Lake Cushman Corridor (FS-24). By recreating responsibly and abiding by the new ban, visitors can create a safe, fun environment for themselves and other users. It is likely this season will again see heavy use and traffic throughout the corridor. If there are no parking options available, be prepared to visit another area. Learn more at go.usa.gov/xHF5T. Skokomish Park is the only public waterfront access on popular Lake Cushman. While the park was closed during the pandemic, they completed numerous improvements to the 500-acre property. May 19 the site reopened to guests; a day-use permit or reservations are required to enjoy the shoreline, boat launch, campsites, picnic shelters, and trails. Waterfront at Potlatch motel and cabins, a prime property along the Hood Canal called, has not yet reopened. The boat launch, also known as Saltwater Park, is currently closed although plans are to resume access sometime in June. Until then, Skokomish Tribe has promised to open the boat launch on shrimping days only. Visit skokomishtourism.com for more information.

The Scoop on Wild Side Concierge for mason county by, Rachel Hansen, Mason County Tourism Coordinator A few years back we took the kids around Europe. Inspired by blogs and wanderlust, we purchased packing cubes and laptops for online schooling, and caught a flight for Paris. Slightly guilty, I was determined to make it educational and visit the important sites along the way. And we did. With their tiny little legs, we covered every postcard highlight. Hopping trains, planes and automobiles, we had a wonderful time. However, ten years later as the views of the Roman Forum fade in my mind, insignificant yet equally precious moments are as clear as yesterday. The VRBO owner in Paris who brought us fresh croissants and told the kids where to find the best crepe vendor. The crepes were delicious but the young man’s joyful conversation is what makes the taste of the Nutella still spark memories for me. Watching the kids dash into the November chill of the Mediterranean was fun albeit chilly, but the delight of the women who flocked around me and chattered in crisp schoolbook English about their own grown children is what my cluttered brain can bring back with perfect clarity. And the gelato. Can’t forget the gelato. I can still taste stracciatella —a light vanilla ice cream packed with slivers of chocolate. Nearly every block in Rome has a gelato stand. This is the basis of the Wild Side Concierge Project. Even the ice cream part. Did you hear the Union Square Deli got serious about serving up Olympic Mountain Ice Cream earlier this year? Worth checking out. Instead of simply inviting the world to see the natural wonders; long after that photos are buried in the drawer, the concierge project strives to help them savor experiences and yearn to return. Paint the majesty of the view from the summit at Mount Ellinor with the intoxicating scents of the Hardware Distillery’s mash as owner and master distiller, Chuck, walk you through the subtlety of each flavor. Pair a snowy off-road adventure to the thundering Hamma Hamma Falls with two dozen of Hood Canal’s freshest in your hand-hewn physically-but-so-far-from-socially-distant personal dining A-frame overlooking an open fire and the ever-changing views of the fjord at the Hama Hama Saloon. And, don’t forget to make reservations. The list is endless. Mason County has countless trails, waterways, and – experiences – that far rival a trip to the ancient monuments of Europe. And I’m not trying to be flippant. When you are back in your home life routine, what stands out most on your vacation? I can guarantee watching your children or grandkids as they gleefully pull manillas from the mud and squeal at 48-legged sea nymph sand worms coiling around their fingers will be as exciting as that Disney ride. Climbing the beach stairs to a rental cabin with neverending views of Canal and forest to cook your fresh catch with a lathering of garlic and butter will outlast
the memory of dinner in the finest restaurant. The Concierge Project includes a carefully curated reference manual that lodging operators, restaurant staff, shop owners, real estate agents –– our community advocates or “Wild Side Guides” –– can find answers quickly. Where can I get a vegan meal in Shelton? What is a good nearby hike with children? What is the nearest lodging overlooking the water? Are dogs welcome? Enter: the Wild Side Concierge Book. The sections are organized for efficient access to static information including history, geography, area highlights, and maps. Delve further for non-static information: harvest maps, hours, and other seasonal information. These pages can be downloaded via QR codes and shared with guests and visitors by smartphone and efficiently replaced with new printouts when the information is updated. The Mason County Tourism website, explorehoodcanal.com, is will soon also include a login area for local Wild Side Guides. The next step will be to identify up to 50 marked Wild Side Guide locations throughout the county, ultimately evolving in the form of a brick and mortar Wild Side Welcome Center. In the current COVID-conscience climate timely information and careful planning is important. Many tourism operators have come to realize that things are not the same and may never be so again. Nor should they be. With a total upheaval in all that we have known to be normal, now is the time to integrate best practices and market the unique assets of Mason County to an informed public that will appreciate and respect the experience. The Wild Side Guides will help local business operate safely, efficiently and be assured that visitors through their doors are aware and open to what to expect. Visitors will be able to make the most of their vacation days enjoying the things they love and not spending precious time hoping to chance upon them. Chances are our local inlets, trails, monumental peaks, and waterfalls are going to be stuffed with visitors again come summer as international travel will be off for a while yet. Rather than brace for the invasion, let’s embrace the new normal and arm our businesses with information and resources so that the experiences that are shared on social media are stories of joy, enlightenment and ultimately memories to last us far past the residue of this pandemic. By the way, Olympic Mountain Ice Cream makes gelato too. If your business is interested in learning more about being a Wild Side Guide, please feel free to contact Mason County tourism at info@explorehoodcanal.com or toll free at (866) 922-7469. We look forward to sharing this exciting collaboration in the coming months. Business Matters - Page 15

The Strip Steak House Finds New Owners A much-beloved eatery in the downtown core is now under new management. After twelve years building a loyal clientele and honing an incredible menu, Herb and Cathy Baze have sold the restaurant to George & Claire Richmond. The Richmonds live on Little Skookum Inlet at Kamilche. George is an engineer with 30 years of professional experience—which he puts into practice at his firm, Richmond Engineering, in
Olympia. Claire has a strong background in customer service and was the General Manager at Alderbrook Golf & Yacht Club in Union from 2017-2020. She currently operates an association management firm, Community First Association Management, in Olympia.
The Chamber wishes a happy retirement to Herb & Cathy. In addition to their hard work building The Strip, the couple contributed largely to the business community and Mason County. The restaurant’s featured items earned them the Chamber’s Golden Fork award in 2010, 2012, and 2015. Herb also served as a Chamber board member 2003-2004 and 2001-2014, where he generously shared his perspective and values.
The couple saw the restaurant for sale a couple of times over the last year and half. Claire reflected, “Herb and Cathy created a very special place where locals celebrate special occasions and travelers can find a great meal. We knew that if The Strip fell into the wrong hands there was a chance that the charm and great menu would be lost forever.” That’s why this spring they took the leap to purchase the business. The restaurant reopened on May 5, with Mark & Christina Lehman still running the kitchen and reviving the full menu. A new liquor license is pending but, in the meantime, you can still enjoy dine-in or take-out options. Hours have been extended to Wednesday through Saturday, 11:00a-8:00p, and reservations may be made online at thestripsteakhouse.com.

The summer season means construction is on the rise and, for local agencies, that means transportation projects and road maintenance. The Chamber realizes that transportation is critical to creating a healthy economy and impacts our daily routines. As such the association invited WSDOT Olympic Region Administrator John Wynands, Mason County Public Works Director Loretta Swanson, and City of Shelton Public Works Director Jay Harris to share their plans for the upcoming months. Travelers should expect multiple work zones as improvements are made to highways, arterials, and residential areas. WSDOT will pave US 101 and State Route 19 along the Olympic Peninsula—including South of Shar Lane to north of Bourgault Road (milepost 324.5 to 339). Any weekend or overnight road closures will be announced in advance. “We know that anywhere from 2,000 to 4,000 vehicles a day travel US 101 and SR 19 in Clallam, Jefferson and Mason counties,” said Project Engineer Karen Boone. “Chip sealing is a costeffective solution to repair damaged pavement at one-fifth the price of traditional paving with comparable results.” The paving on State Route 300 between Belfair and Belfair State Park was rescheduled to begin June 7. In Mason County, crews will also replace work expansion joints and conduct routine mainte-

Mason County continues to focus on fish barrier removal projects. This year Public Works will complete culvert replacements on Highland Rd, Homer Adams Rd, and Agate Lp. That work will result in planned, typically short, localized detours. Standard chip seal, striping, and paving projects are also moving forward. The County has purchased additional equipment including a new shoulder machine which will allow the conversion of gravel to paved or chip surface to improve roadway safety and enhance the space for multimodal travel. For more information contact Mason County Public Works at (360) 4279670 ext. 450. The United States Navy has issued a contract for seismic retrofit work which will address the crossings at Goldsborough Creek, Pine Street, and Mason Lake Road. Currently no closures or detours have been announced; work is expected to commence it late summer or early fall. City of Shelton will also be conducting paving work this season. Last year crews primarily addressed residential streets in the Mountain View Neighborhood while this year the work will be focused on two stretches: Park St and Thirteenth. The Park St Pavement Rehabilitation Project will affect the entirety of that road, from S First St to S Seventh St. Thirteenth St will also be paved from Johns Prairie Rd to Mountain View Dr. Additional details are published online at sheltonwa.gov. Travelers are encouraged to slow down in work areas and watch out for crew members.

to REOPEN
W A
The Chamber joined the call led by Washington Hospitality Association (WHA) for the state to reopen by June 15, calling on Governor Inslee to release a plan for reopening the state by that date and join the 48 other states that already released reopening plans. The Governor did, in fact, announce on May 13 that the state is moving toward a statewide reopening of June 30.

private, we need to change our response. We needed a plan to reopen – fully – as soon as possible,” said Chamber CEO Heidi McCutcheon.
Earlier press conferences in May saw Inslee assert that Washington would continue with phases for “the foreseeable future” and that the state was “way below” the vaccine rate that would proponent reopening. Anton shares, “The goalpost has moved too many times. First, it was about protecting seniors. Then, about flattening the curve. Then, about not overwhelming hospitals. Now, it’s reaching an undefined vaccination rate that the CDC has said is unachievable. We have all sacrificed only to have the goalpost moved.” “We stand with our businesses. The data shows that different decisions should be made,” McCutcheon says. “This is why the Chamber took a stand and asked our community members to sign a petition urging the governor to release a reopening plan. We have been saying, ‘we are in this together,’ and this was a way to act on those words.” Thankfully, public push seems to have swayed policy and a reopening date of June 30 is set. The Chamber is carefully monitoring the updated guidance from state agencies, providing feedback, and assisting members in navigating forthcoming changes. Raves! Mason County
Went to T’s Cafe & Espresso for breakfast and got a gluten free breakfast sandwich and it was delicious. With my allergies, I always find it hard to find good gluten free options when eating out. The food and coffee were so good that my fiancé and I went back for lunch and the jambalaya soup did not let us down.
-Kathi W.
Radio Fryer was just getting ready to pull out to go to an event. They stopped and gave me complimentary cheeseburger rolls and I also bought onion rings. Wow, delicious! Awesome customer service, thank you.

Rave for Blondie’s Restaurant in downtown Shelton! First, they’ve been doing a bang-up job with social distancing measures, hand sanitizer, no one is wearing their mask below their nose, etc. Second, great food. I absolutely love good diner fare and they nail it. Third, their staff is always super friendly. Not in that disingenuous customer service fake smile kind of way… Give them your business! - Jason Lamb

I would like to give a shout out to a great company we just used to clean our roof. Of course, we have the roof from hell! Extremely steep! Jeremy of Bavarian Pro Wash did a masterful job. I highly recommend them! -Vickie Beeby
