Director’s Message Heidi McCutcheon | Chamber Director
SHELTONMASONCOUNTY
I love the spring in Mason County. After the gray skies and chilly weather of the winter, the spring reminds me of why I love it here so much. As the sun breaks through the trees, daffodils and tulips begin to bloom, the weather warms – it’s gorgeous here! I believe that the absence of the sunny weather makes me appreciate it all the more. While I prefer sunshine over the rain, I know that the rain brings about the lush green spring I love so much. When I think of the Pacific Northwest and of Mason County in particular, I think of rain, shellfish, and waterfronts. Seeing as these are some of my favorite things, I suppose it makes sense that we have created a new festival celebrating all of these. It’s called April Showers and it will be held at the Mason Lake Recreation Area next to the boat launch. This one day festival will showcase BBQ, seafood, music and brews. Children 14 and under are free. The $7.50 general admission fee will grant entrance, food sample scrip and a rain poncho. You’re probably wondering why we’ve created this event. There are a few reasons. First, the Chamber recently made the decision to axe our annual auction. Hallelujah!
While I understand the history of the event and it made quite a bit of revenue, it doesn’t align with the Chamber’s mission. We asked members to donate something. And then we asked members to pay to attend. And then we asked members to buy things. It was a lot of asking when what the Chamber ought to be doing is a lot of giving. But, it also made quite a bit of revenue for our programs. So, it’s a little give and a little take – by holding April Showers, we still have the chance to earn some income, by replacing the auction with this carefree, fun, and laid back event. It also allows our members to make some revenue. Secondly, it increases our sense of community. When I was growing up, I spent summers camping at Mason Lake with friends and family.

I remember watermelon eating contests and digging for ‘treasure’ in piles of hay. I miss these events and I wish that Mason County had more of them; this event gives reason for us to come together. Also, members of the Shelton-Mason County Chamber recently became eligible to receive a complimentary access card to Green Diamond’s Mason Lake Rec Area, which allows folks to camp. So, on Saturday, April 30, gather up your galoshes, slip on your slicker and head out to Mason Lake Rec Area to celebrate life on the Wild Side of Washington. Together, we’ll dance in the rain to the sound of the Lester Crow Trio and the Varmints while snacking on seafood, bbq, and beer (age permitting, of course).

President’s Message
Jennifer Owens | 2016 Chamber Board President Branch Manager, Peninsula Credit Union Shelton As a new year begins, so does my new role as President of the Shelton-Mason County Chamber. I would like to start with telling you a little about myself and how I became a part of this community. I was raised on Orcas Island in the San Juan Islands where my parents were managers at Rosario Resort. I grew up in a house on the resort property that was built in the early 1900’s. I must say, living in a place that I could go swimming whenever I wanted, catch baby crab on the beach, play with the jellyfish off the marina dock, going out in the boat with dad to pull the crab pots, and hiking the trails was an ideal childhood. I knew that I would return here at some point in my life. I worked for Safeway for years and ultimately was the “Person in Charge.” As a person that has always loved working with people, I truly loved this job. However, in 2002 I made the decision to choose a new path with Peninsula Credit Union that would allow me to spend more time with my two small children, future husband and stepson. I started as an entry level teller and worked my way up to my current position as Shelton Branch Manager. As a person that has lived in Mason County for 20 years, I didn’t realize how little I knew about Mason County until I became involved with the Chamber. In 2012, I decided that it was time for me to get out and get to know
more about the community I worked and lived in. I did this by attending my first Business After Hours at the Chamber. This was a huge step for me and far out of my comfort zone by walking into a building where I didn’t know anyone. Thankfully, hardly any time passed before I was greeted by a smiling face. If it wasn’t for that, I probably would have only lasted a few minutes before I snuck out a side door. I didn’t realize that the Chamber staff keeps and eye out for new faces; they made me feel comfortable and introduced me to many business members. Fast forward several months and I was attending my first Chamber Board meeting. In the past three years of my
involvement in the Chamber, I have been amazed about what I really didn’t know about the community I live. I truly live in a community with amazing people doing amazing things to help Mason County thrive.
This year has already had a great start and the Chamber Board has some incredible goals set out to accomplish that I believe will even further strengthen Mason County. Those goals are set out on page 17.
As I reflect back on 2015, there are so many great things the Chamber has been a part of to help the business community and Mason County as a whole. This wouldn’t be possible without the amazing Chamber staff, dedicated Board of Trustees, and devoted volunteers. As a Board Member, I am in awe of what a great community I work and live in and look forward to what 2016 will bring our community.
If you have thought about getting involved in the Chamber by attending an event, but have hesitated because it’s outside of your comfort zone, I encourage you to give it a try. You will be amazed at how much you will learn about our community. If you don’t know anyone there, give me a call. I’ll walk in with you and help you meet some great people who will likely become your friends, as I have learned from personal experience.

Each year the Chamber hosts its members and community leaders at the Annual Awards Gala, presenting the prestigious Business of the Year, Citizen of the Year, Volunteer of the Year, and President’s Choice awards. The semi-formal event, presented by Premier Sponsor Little Creek Casino Resort, commenced with a word from our sponsors after a Toast to 2015 by Awards Sponsor Melanie Bakala of State Farm Insurance.

Premier Sponsor Little Creek Casino Resort hosted a growing crowd at the Skookum Creek Event Center which had been draped with fabrics to create an intimate feel and decked to the nines with luxe table settings and soft uplighting. The guests enjoyed a delectable four course meal with the dinner menu ranging from Dover sole with crab to an exquisite cheese tray, each expertly paired with wines by Little Creek’s grand sommelier. Everything from the menu cards detailing these culinary delights to the table numbers
As the event wrapped up, all of the nominees were honored and the winners for the 2015 awards were announced by McCutcheon and Crabtree. McCutcheon began by saying, “We are so fortunate to have an abundance of individuals, businesses, and organizations who strive to make Mason County a better place to live, work, and play. Tonight, the nominees for these awards truly reflect this character. Our community is a better place because of them.”

After a brief review by executive director Heidi McCutcheon of the Chamber’s 2015 top accomplishments, the evening progressed with the Honorable Victoria Meadows presiding over the 2016 Installation of the Board of Trustees. Those taking home top honors were Lifetime Dedication Honoree Billie Howard, Business of the Year Smoking Mo’s, Citizen of the Year Chief Darrin Moody, Volunteer of the Year Michelle Corral, and President’s Choice Senior Services for South Sound. For years, Billie has been involved in the community; she was active in 4-H when her kids were young and she went on to volunteer with the Historical Society and Forest Festival, even being named the Grand Marshall of the parade in 1999 among numerous other awards. Even now, Billie acts as the director of Saints Pantry, and coordinates volunteers for the Caboose Visitor Center on Railroad, giving back in a number of ways. Business of the Year honors the business that made the most significant contribution benefiting the Mason County business community over the past year. Any size business is eligible as the Chamber strives to recognize overall contributions improving our community and the business climate. This year’s nominees were Mason County PUD#3, Mason Transit Authority, Olsen Furniture, Osaka Sushi & Asian Bistro, Smoking Mo's, The Dance Shack, The Shopper, Wild & Woodsy Catering, and Wildcatz Fierce Cheer. Not only do they have delicious food – Mo’s won the coveted Golden Fork award in 2013 and 2014 – they also frequently host unique events to give back locally; some examples include their fall Smoketoberfest providing Thanksgiving dinners for those at Crossroads housing, Break the Bank casino night to raise funds for Cystic Fibrosis, and by partnering with Cascade Crops for a Pajama Jam benefiting local families. “They have true community spirit partnering with other businesses and organizations showcasing collaboration is for the greater good. They have true community spirit, partnering with businesses and organizations showcasing collaboration is for the greater good.” Five citizens were nominated for the Citizen of the Year award, which honors individuals who have made outstanding contributions to enhance the business community and the community at large and who have given freely of their time, talent, energy and expertise. The nominees were Tanya Frazier, Denis Leverich, Chief Darrin Moody, and Michael Starr. Chief Darrin Moody took home the 2015 award. Police Chief Moody has already made a huge difference in his short time in Shelton so it is no surprise that he was named Citizen of the Year. His understanding that the police are an integral part of the community has led to increased involvement with many different organizations. Moody joined the Mason County community in 2014, bringing with him more than 25 years of experience in public service. As Chief Moody began his tenure in Shelton, we immediately began to see the impact of his improvements and the involvement. Aside from all the inner workings of the police department, he has also taken the time to get to know his new community. He and his lovely wife can be seen an many of our community events and festivals. BIGHT Shelton Mason County Chamber
She's most recently been an active member of the Business Expo Committee. In addition to the Chamber, she is a member of Kristmas Town Kiwanis Club helping to organize the Christmas Parade and Bluegrass from the Forest. One nominator shared, "Michelle has great talent and an even bigger heart." One example of this is the Warm Hands mittens and scarves drive that she personally organizes each fall to ensure that school-aged children in our community stay warm. This year, Michelle also serves as the President of the Mason General Hospital Foundation Board. Police Chief Moody, 2015 Citizen of the Year
Volunteer of the Year nominees are recognized for their contributions to the Chamber's programs and activities. These volunteers have given their time, talents, energies and expertise in an effort to enhance the business community and the community at large. Michelle Corral, Darren Eisele, and John Lester were nominated this year, with Michelle Corral taking home the honors. Michelle Corral has been an active volunteer with the Chamber for many years, serving on the Chamber Board and many committees.

Lastly, in continuation of the tradition created in 2012, the President’s Choice award was bestowed on a member of the Chamber. This year, President Kelley Crabtree selected Senior Services for South Sound to receive the honor. She said: “This organization provides vital services to a demographic in our community that is near and dear to my heart, our aging senior population. They contract with the Mason County Senior Center to feed lunch to their membership and provide more than 20,000 Meals on Wheels annually to residents of Shelton and Mason County. Senior Services also fund and operate the STARS adult day care program at the Shelton Lutheran Church, provides support for families needing in-home caregiver placement as well as case management, nutrition support, transportation, respite care, socialization, health, and independent living programs. They do all of this with a limited amount of staff while maintaining a network of approximately 250 volunteers which in and of itself is no easy feat.”

Chamber Expands Awards Program For decades, the Chamber has recognized deserving businesses and individuals through annual awards. This year, we are excited to announce that the Chamber is expanding its program. The Chamber will now accept nominations on a quarterly basis for businesses and volunteers. The nominations will be reviewed by the Member Services Committee and make a recommendation to the Board of Trustees. “Collecting nominations throughout the year makes sense,” says executive director Heidi McCutcheon. “It’s difficult to remember in October what a volunteer did in March – calling for nominations year round will ensure that those who’ve helped in the beginning of the year are also acknowledged for their support.” Those quarterly award winners in April, July, and September will automatically be forwarded to the annual awards ballot. In the fall keeping in line with tradition, the Chamber will open nominations to the public.
Those nominations will be reviewed by the same process as quarterly awards and up to two additional names in each category will be selected for inclusion on the annual awards ballot. After this process, each Chamber member will receive a ballot with the full slate for each category. The votes cast on the ballots determine the winners of the annual awards. Nominations may be made online at sheltonchamber.org/awards or in person at the Chamber Office.
Nomination Guidelines

TIPS FOR SPRING
Cleaning
Clutter Clean Out
Spring is a great time to make a fresh start. One of the best places you can do this is in your own home or office. It can be overwhelming, so before you begin tidying up, organizing, and sorting; take some time to discard. This doesn’t necessarily mean trashing as you can donate your items, recycle what you can, and trash only the rubbish (you’ll be surprised how little there is). You can start with a single space, a room, or even one cupboard. The key is to make your space usable, giving everything a place and making it easier to find what you need when you need it. A technique for cutting through the clutter is to define three categories of keep, donate, and trash/recycle. Sort by groups of things like paperwork, clothing, or kitchenwares, rather than by room; it is easier to pare down when faced with the sheer volume of what you are storing. If you are having a hard time deciding what to keep and what to discard, make each choice by asking yourself, “Does this make me happy?” When you have placed everything in categories, you can begin with your keep pile. Move group by group rather than room by room and return items to their proper place. Now that you have tidied up your space, what do you do with the rest of the items? We’ve gathered a few local options for you. Need more inspiration? The Department of Ecology has tools for you to find recycling opportunities nearby. Visit 1800recycle.wa.gov or call 1 (800) RECYCLE. Visit 2goodt2toss.com, an online exchange, to list reusable materials.

Connecting Teachers & Business Leaders in Education Partnership What if every teacher had someone from the business community to ask about supplies, sponsorships, and speakers for their classroom? That's the question that Susanna Samuelson from Our Community Credit Union had for Chamber Director Heidi McCutcheon after the two were sitting on a high school advisory committee together. "I was on the phone with a business person whose husband is a teacher and a light bulb went off," Samuelson says. She pitched the idea to McCutcheon and the two approached Principal Eric Barkman at Olympic Middle School to see if it was possible. Samuelson had a good working relationship with the principal already as her sons attended OMS. She related her experience of being highly involved in the PTSO while her sons were in grade school; however, as the kids aged she noted that parents become less involved. "It's really the time that teachers need more support, but the parents are backing away to give their child some breathing room," she shared. Because of this, the Chamber decided to move forward with a trial group of seven teachers and seven business partners at Olympic Middle School. This team has offered to spend a couple of hours a month together to see what they can do to support one another. They will then help create the framework for a larger group to begin at the start of next school year.
While the teachers will gain great support, the program is not one-sided. "The business community has been looking for ways to partner with the schools," says McCutcheon. "They know that having a hand in education will help increase the workforce leaving our schools." Statistics show that strong schools help businesses recruit and keep a strong employee base.

When asked how to keep everyone on the same page, he shares about teams from different departments to interconnect them. One team may plan the Christmas party and another may put together the Relay for Life team – while the goal of the team is important, the priority is that the team members get to know each other and interact with one another. “After a couple of years working on these teams, there have been some strong relationships that have grown,” he says.
Fisher acknowledges that many things have changed in his time at the credit union. He points out that ten years ago no one had considered things like the ability to deposit a check via smart phone. When pressed on what he believes will be the goal in the upcoming years, he cites remaining relevant is his priority. “It once was that you could watch trends for six months, then jump in and catch up in a month. Now trends are moving much faster.” He also is looking forward to realizing advances to help ebb the continued increase in fraud and issues with cyber security which have become relentless. When asked what he looks forward to about Mondays, he quickly responds, “It’s a fresh week. Over the weekend you have some time to reflect and adapt your game plan – that can be implemented on Monday.” With ten years under his belt, he shares that he continues to feel energized by his work. There is little doubt that OCCU will continue to grow under his leadership in the upcoming years.

Chamber Board Sets Goals for 2016 Heidi McCutcheon | Executive Director
Amid the Mason County scenery, the 2016 Chamber Board of Trustees gathered together with Chamber staff for the first time this year at picturesque A Lighthouse on Hammersley Bed & Breakfast. The rural location allowed the Board to “get away” from their businesses while being just minutes from town. The first order of business was for the Board members to get to know each other. As each individual introduced him or herself, it became clear that there was much variety of experience among them. From retail to blue collar; from Master’s Degrees to GEDs – this collective group reflected the full diversity of Mason County business owners and operators. After the Board members were reasonably comfortable with one another, the group dove into becoming more familiar with the Chamber. At the time of the retreat the Chamber had approximately 360 members. Of those, 80% have ten employees or fewer; the top five membership categories are construction/contractors, community organizations/non-profit, real estate, restaurants, and retail. The annual Chamber budget is just over $350,000 which is comprised of 40% from Chamber events and programs, 30% from membership dues, and 20% coming from advertising/sponsorship revenues. The Board then moved on to annual goals. In 2015 the goals were to create a communication strategy and to deliver a Shelton Visioning Plan; both goals were met. After much conversation surrounding the Chamber’s strengths, challenges, and
prevailing opportunities, the 2016 goals were established: 1. Strengthen relationships with members, dedicating time for the Executive Director to meet one-on-one with at least ten members per month; and 2. Actively engage in local schools as a means to influence workforce development and improve quality of life. Lastly, the Board voted in the Executive Committee. This consists of President Jennifer Owens (Peninsula Credit Union), President Elect John Lester (Arnold Smith Insurance) and Vice President of Member Services Karen Schade (Edward Jones). President Owens then appointed Treasurer Wes Taylor (Taylor Shellfish). Kelley Crabtree (Maple Glen Senior Living) remains on the Executive Committee serving as Past President. The Chamber’s Board of Trustees are charged with setting polices and determining the direction of the association. Trustees are elected to the Board, by vote of the membership, each year. To see the entire list of the current Board of Trustees, see page 3.

Road Diet Testing Set for this Summer Almost two years ago, the Shelton-Mason County Chamber began to work toward creating a plan for Shelton’s future. Through a partnership with the City of Shelton, Green Diamond Resource Company, and our local businesses, we raised $54,000 to conduct the process, which included a ‘walking audit’ of downtown Shelton and two public meetings. Nearly 200 people participated in the process and in October of 2015, the plan was delivered. But the work doesn’t end there. In January, an advisory committee of public and private stakeholders formed to ensure the plan was utilized. At the committee’s first meeting, a mission statement was adopted: using the plan as our guide, the group identified priorities and forwarded recommendations to the City Commission, Chamber Board and community stakeholders. These recommendations should be included in the City of Shelton’s Comprehensive Plan update. Community Economic Development Director Steve Goins explained that typically items within the six year scope are anticipated to be included in upcoming budgets and implemented. Items on the 20 year scope are more ambiguous and are not to be carried out in the near future. The committee has already had some success; one reason is that a $5,000 matching grant (for a total of $10,000) has been awarded to implement a phase of the community vision identified within the plan. In early March, consensus was reached to implement a test for the street diet this summer. The test area will run from 2nd Street to 5th Street beginning in Summer 2016 for a full year:
Top near-term Downtown Street Priorities: Street Diet with a purpose. The street diet needs to happen in conjunction with much education, visual explanation and other high-energy happenings downtown. Public education. See our Facebook page, “Shelton Vision Project,” for updates and where others can post ideas. The committee should also take steps to have a continuing and regular presence in local media. Gateway Signage. This is two pronged, first speaking to WSDOT about signage on Hwy 101. Secondly, a privately-driven plan for improved signage at our “gateways.” Take advantage of any “low hanging fruit” in terms of possibilities for near-term parklets/open space. • 4th & Railroad intersection will undergo several tests to determine the best long-term solution. Tests include: painted intersection with traffic lights remaining functional; 2-way test with traffic lights flashing yellow on Railroad and red on 4th; and mini-circle test with painted arrows and crosswalk setbacks with full signage.
While the test period is for one year, the committee recognizes that there may be changes may need to be made sooner; for example unanticipated safety issues or trials that clearly don’t work.
• South side of 3rd – 5th will be parallel parking with an adjacent multi-purpose lane. The multi-purpose lane is a place for bike travel, space for cars to park, emergency vehicles, deliveries, etc.
The benefit of this test being primarily paint is that changes can be made. Additional features – like parklets, planters, can still be addressed, but more likely implemented further down the line as funding is secured.
• North side of 3rd – 5th will be angle parking. The committee would like to do research before determining whether back-in or front-in angle parking is optimal.
• 2nd & Railroad intersection with painted crosswalks; intersection being a differing solid color so drivers to slow as they approach 3rd. • 3rd to 5th becomes a two-lane road; drivers in the right lane approaching intersections will turn right. Painted crosswalks at each intersection. BIGHT Shelton Mason County Chamber

Chamber Supports School Choice In January the Chamber signed as a partner of National School Choice Week, shining a spotlight on effective education options. Started in 2011, NSCW has grown into the world's largest celebration of opportunity in education. The Week is a nonpartisan, nonpolitical public awareness effort. The goal is to raise awareness of all education options for children. These options include traditional public schools, public charter schools, magnet schools, online learning, private schools, and homeschooling. The community was invited to drop in at the Chamber Office to pick up a yellow scarf and share why you support #SchoolChoice. National School Choice week is just one program the Chamber has joined to promote partnerships between schools, businesses, and our community. declare these public schools unconstitutional. The bill would fund public charter schools through the state’s Opportunity Pathways Account, which has revenue from the state lottery. By taking money from this account, public charter schools would not be funded by money from the same account as traditional public schools – a practice the state Supreme Court frowned upon.
The Senate passed a charter school bill aimed at fixing the legal issues that caused the state Supreme Court to

Snazzy Spring Tips for Painting Your Home Spring has indeed sprung! If you’re looking to jazz up the exterior of your house take into consideration some of these tips for better application and longer wear. Watch the weather: you’ll need little rain and low humidity. Paint will not stick to wet surfaces; a general rule of thumb is that oil-based paint can be applied when the temperatures are between 40°- 90° F and latex between 50°- 85° F – this includes the overnight temperatures! The best drying will occur when the relative humidity is 40% to 70%. Preparation is key – paint won’t stick to dirty or rough surfaces so take the time to sand and wash your home before you begin. This also gives you the chance to inspect your home upfront and replace any rotten surfaces. If it is a small area, you can use a wood hardener and match with an exterior filler product, such as a wood filler.
TIPS FOR SPRING
Painting
Don’t forget to prep your landscaping either! It’s easy to forget how messy painting can be and unless you want your rhododendron to match your house, cover up landscaping with drop cloths or plastic weighed down or tied off around items. Remember outdoor furniture, hoses, and lighting fixtures. Choose your paint wisely. Higher quality paint means you’ll get better coverage that is longer lasting. Consumer Reports Magazine rated Tozier Brothers Ace Hardware’s Clark & Kensington Exterior Paint as their number one pick – it is the only exterior paint to receive an “excellent” rating after nine years of simulated wear and tear – and at only $32 a gallon, it is a bargain compared to other name brands.

Make sure to color match: Mix multiple cans of paint to gain a uniform color. This is especially important if you purchase different gallons at various times. If you are painting a porch or other flooring, make sure to add some grit – a small amount of fine sand will make all the difference in traction. As you begin to apply the paint, begin at the top and work your way down. This will help control streaks and feather any drips. You can paint with brush and roller (there are many types to choose from at ProBuild) or head over to Gateway Rental Center for a paint sprayer, which you can rent by the day or for the week. When you finish up for the night, make sure to firmly lid your paint containers using a hammer or a mallet.
After considering all of these steps, it may seem like an awful lot of work. In that case, you can bypass the above and call Flying Colors Painting Company directly to do it for you. The only thing you’ll need in this case is your color selection and your pocketbook.

At the Heart of All We Do Deidre Peterson | Chamber Membership Director
As you rifle through this issue of the BIGHT magazine, you will see just a few of the Chamber’s programs. We work together with our members, year-round, to form a connected business community through advocacy, education, and promotion. In addition to fostering a partnership between the City of Shelton and local businesses to develop a plan for Shelton’s future, the Government Affairs Committee also weighed in on a number of proposals that impact business including the budget retreat, the moratorium on building fees, the LED Lighting Project, and acting as a lead partner for the downtown Shelton Vision Project. We also offer Candidates Forums to provide a voter education opportunity for local voters. We understand that partnerships with local schools are important to build an educated work force and create a better quality of life for our community. In addition to School Choice Week and the Mason County Education Partnership, the Chamber held the very first Mason County Lemonade Day at Hood Canal School. This student entrepreneurship program
was a great success – after going through the program, more than half of the students said that that high school graduation was more important to them and that they felt they could be successful if they chose to be a business owner.
what our members are doing (Scene & Heard), host an online calendar, hot deals, produce this magazine, and more. More promotional opportunities abound with online campaigns as well as the Business Expo & Bite of Mason County.
Education for our members is another top priority. We have hosted a number of expert speakers and workshops to allow businesses to maximize their potential. Our monthly luncheons afford the chance to learn about topics relevant to business and specific to Mason County.
And our members receive some exclusive perks! Thanks to a new partnership with Green Diamond Resource Company, members receive an access card to the Mason Lake Recreational Area. The program provides access the day use area, camping, group camp areas, and the kitchen areas.
Promotion is at the heart of all we do. For the nearly twenty thousand tourists that visited our Visitor Centers in 2015 we provided information on local sights and services. Last year we produced the popular Hood Canal Map with activities, restaurants, retail, lodging and more. We also promote
The Chamber is dedicated to providing value for our members’ investment. If you are interested in joining the Chamber as a business or a Friend of the Chamber, we’d love to hear from you. You can reach me directly at deidre@sheltonchamber.org or (360) 426-2021.
