Rose Colored Glasses Heidi McCutcheon | Executive Director

As I sit here writing, I am overwhelmed by how incredible our community is. It’s a gorgeous autumn day; brightly colored red, yellow and orange leaves have just begun to fall and the sun is peeking through fog to make them look even more vibrant. I’m sure it feels all the more awe inspiring as I am wearing my rose-colored glasses today. It is one of my favorite days of the year. I just finished making phone calls – an ordinary task, but this is different. I just made eleven phone calls to people to let them know that their efforts were noticed. That someone is appreciative of their hard work. That someone thinks they make a difference. These eleven people are the nominees for Business, Citizen and Volunteer of the Year. It is such an amazing feeling to tell them they’ve been nominated. You can read all about this year’s nominees on page 12. They are a group of exceptional businesses and individuals. The Chamber’s 93rd Anniversary will be celebrated on Friday, January 16 at Little Creek Casino Resort. We have worked hard to make this event less about the Chamber itself by putting more focus on what makes the Chamber great: our volunteers, our businesses and our citizens. They are the heart of our organization and thus we celebrate them with our Annual Awards Gala. It is an amazing night of revelry and celebration in a packed room of VIP’s –all working to make Mason County a better place to live, work

and play. It has been an amazing year for the Chamber with many new changes. We moved the Business Expo & Bite of Mason County to a new location at the SHS Minidome. With better parking, more room inside the building and more options than ever in our ‘retail row’ and food court, the event was well received by the community. We implemented the new tiered dues structure. In the past, the Chamber’s membership dues were based solely off of how many employees a business had. To me, and the Chamber Board, it seemed as if we were penalizing our businesses for being successful. So we revamped our membership dues to be based off of what you get from the Chamber instead of who you are. You can get your benefits wrapped in a package or you can pick and choose what you want. This is a system fair to both our small businesses and our corporate giants, and the response has been overwhelmingly positive from both. On behalf of the Chamber, I also had the chance to weigh in on the candidates for Shelton Police Department Chief and Central Mason Fire District Lieutenant. Both had exceptional candidates and I am extremely encouraged by the city hiring Darrin Moody to be the SPD Chief. He was sworn in

on November 10 and I believe he will do great things for the department and the community as a whole. See page 29 for more about Chief Moody. It has been a busy year for the Chamber and we have had some great successes. I am confident we will continue that trend moving into 2015 and look forward to serving you in the New Year.

My Chamber Experience

Brian Kelly | Security Manager, Miles Sand & Gravel 2014 President of the Chamber Board

I joined the Shelton-Mason Chamber of Commerce in 2010 at the behest of my employer. My boss requested I join and later strongly encouraged my participation. I explained to him I was not interested and I had too much on my plate. Every time the subject came up, I would begin to protest and complain. I remember saying; “I’m not a people person, it’s not for me” and “we don’t need to belong to the Chamber; we are a materials supplier, not a retail business – we don’t even advertise.” My protests were to no avail and it was explained that as the representative of our business in this community, I would join the Chamber. At this point, it was no longer a request and I knew I would soon become a member. Within a few weeks I received confirmation that I had joined not one, but two Chambers. I was to find letters of welcome and information from each Chamber in my mailbox... the varmints had gone ahead and signed me up on their own. Of all the nerve! Well, at this point I knew I had better get involved if I expected to continue receiving their generous contributions to my wellbeing (in the form of a pay check). My first meeting was one of trepidation and frayed nerves. I knew no one. Here I was standing amongst the members of the

prestigious Chamber of Commerce feeling like a misplaced outsider and totally foolish. But you know what? They treated me like I was a visiting dignitary. I was welcomed, engaged and then introduced to many of the members. At these and many more similar gatherings, I met and socialized with some of the most interesting, gracious, and wonderful people. I have learned so much about our community and what makes it such a wonderful place to live and do business. Maybe all this Chamber stuff is OK after all.... To make a rather long story short, I became more and more active in the Chamber and began to enjoy the gatherings and events. I pushed my wife Kelli, who works for a local insurance company, to also get involved.

Back in January of 2013, Kelli and I attended the Chamber Gala which included a fantastic nine-course meal and accompanying wine parings. While enjoying the afterglow of the Gala, many of us retired to the lounge and experienced a joyous and somewhat rowdy fellowship. It was there that I was approached and asked to consider being a member of the Board of Trustees. My purpose for telling this story of my Chamber experience is to show how a socially awkward, reticent, reclusive person such as myself can open up to new

Taking Care of Business

Kelley Crabtree | Chamber President-Elect | Maple Glen Senior Living

I always used to hear my ‘elders’ say that the older you get the faster time passes. As a teen anxiously waiting to turn 21, I thought that was crazy. Even throughout my 20’s and 30’s I didn’t realize the significance of this statement. Now as I am rapidly heading down the proverbial hill toward 50, I find myself looking back and realizing how true that statement is. I also find myself saying it to my own children which makes me realize I am one of the ‘elders’ now and time is indeed flying by. Just in case the last year was flying by as fast for you as it was for me and you missed any of the great things that the Chamber was involved in, here are a few highlights: As far as advocacy goes, it was a busy year for the Chamber. At the legislative level, the Chamber’s Government Affairs Committee (GAC) continued to be highly involved. Beginning with a Send-Off event in January advocating the business community’s priorities (which range from protecting our

maintain a vibrant business community,

The GAC also hosted two candidate forums, one before the primary election and one just before the general election, to help inform and educate the community on just what the candidates stand for. See page 9 for a more thorough review.

We lobbied extensively with the City of Shelton on the behalf of our business community; at times we were successful in our advocacy and at times we were not. One of our greatest successes with the City Commission is partnering with them for the downtown visioning process that is slated to commence in January of 2015. The City agreed to match funds raised by the business community, up to $18,000. This is a great success for Shelton, and downtown specifically, as after community workshops and exercises to assist in prepar-

promote tourism, and to facilitate economic development. businesses with our community through Advocacy, Education & Promotion ing the Downtown Visioning Plan, we will be attractive recipients for grant funding to build out the plan and help our downtown to be a strong commercial center. We have also been successful in advocating the need for an anti-scavenging (AKA dumpster diving) ordinance. When we met with Lt. Watson of SPD near the end of 2013, he told us that such an ordinance would be beneficial to his officers and that it would be a tool to assist in their ongoing efforts to ensure safety and walkability within the City. Lt. Watson is currently working on the verbiage for an ordinance for the commission to consider.

We were unsuccessful with the City Commission in two areas. First, the city cut one police detective position through budget cutbacks. While we were pleased with the attention to derelict buildings, we asked that the commission carefully consider their priorities and that public safety needed to be the top priority. The commission still cut that position; however, we are greatly encouraged by the recent decision to hire Darrin Moody as the new SPD Chief. Secondly, the City Commission voted 2-1 to implement an option for a water pressure system that we believe to be overly aggressive and includes the city taking out a $6.9 million loan. We had advocated with the commission to choose an option that took sufficient action while taking advantage of low interest loans available but that did not create unnecessary risk and uncertainty for the city’s taxpayers. The two commissioners who voted for the $6.9M option did say that they opted for it to secure low-interest funds and would only use what was necessary, but they did not add any additional safeguards suggested by the Chamber, such as bringing the process back to public comment should they deem those funds necessary. The Chamber did much for education this year as well, beginning with our support of the Shelton School District Levy in January. We pronounced the levy as a critical component of basic education in our schools and that supporting the levy was critical to ensure high performing schools, providing a skilled workforce and a quality of life that will attract new businesses to our community. We also reported on legislative bills and highlighted their main objectives. This was educational as it simply stated what impact each would have on our business community. We later tracked the voting record for our elected officials to measure their performance on business issues. Our Business Builder Workshops moved to the last Monday of each month — a more convenient time, especially for our retail businesses and restaurants. These free educational monthly workshops range from social media topics and customer service seminars to liquor law

compliance and introduction to business resources. One of our workshops was preparatory for the Business Expo and Bite of Mason County to help participants learn how to effectively interact with their audience and best share their message in a short amount of time. Finally, we worked with the University of Washington Medical School to help find housing for a student. Part of his education for rural medicine brought him to work at Mason General Hospital this summer. He is at the top of his program and it is anticipated that he will return again next year. Looking right now at this magazine, BIGHT, it’s clear that we do a lot throughout the year to promote our business. The creation of this magazine (mailing out more than 18,000 copies on a quarterly basis) is to get the word out about what the Chamber and all of our member businesses are doing. If you haven’t noticed in the past, the centerfold always contains events and what’s happening in Mason County.

One of my favorites is the “Scene & Heard” section which briefly tells what some of our businesses are doing. We also created some new promotional opportunities this year such as our golf social. Golfers played on Monday afternoons for four months throughout the summer at the gorgeous Alderbrook Golf Course. The idea behind this was to find ways outside of business meetings for people to connect and network. It was a great inaugural year and we expect this to grow in popularity moving forward. The Hood Canal Committee was created to promote local businesses and provide referrals, to share ideas, contacts, and collaborate while creating a unified image and voice for the Hood Canal community. The committee has around 20 businesses participating and they have worked together to make this year’s Christmas on the Canal event. See page 21 for more information on how to enter to win the prize basket!

Though the Chamber will continue providing visitor information services, this is the last year that the Chamber will manage tourism promotion for Mason County. We have made great strides over the past decade in drawing more visitors and raising awareness, including a vibrant marketing scheme based off of our tourism commercials and revitalizing explorehoodcanal.com. We are proud of the work we have done and are hopeful that the new management will continue on this upward trend. As you can see, it has been a busy, productive and successful year for the Chamber. The Chamber has many opportunities for members to become more involved. If you are interested in joining a committee or becoming more involved in other ways, give us a call to find out how. As we look forward to 2015, I think of all the things we will be involved in for the good of our community. I can’t help but smile and think how proud I am of our Chamber membership and board. Even though it would be nice to go back to the days when time wasn’t flying by so quickly, I wouldn’t change a thing!

Dumpster diving, elections, and looking forward Julie Sund Nichols | Whitehouse & Nichols, LLP 2014 Government of Affairs Committee Chair

The Chamber Government Affairs Committee has had a busy autumn that included a renewed push for the City of Shelton to adopt a dumpster diving ordinance, then a lively General Election Candidate Forum co-sponsored with the Mason County Journal and MasonWebTV. Dumpster Diving Over a year ago, the Chamber went to the City Commission to ask them to adopt an ordinance addressing dumpster diving as a step to give our police force another tool that would assist in their ongoing efforts to ensure safety and walkability within the City. Following that request, the City’s Poverty Task Force spent countless hours collecting data and formulating a thorough report. That report included a recommendation to adopting an ordinance, and specified that it was an action item that could be “easily and quickly implemented with little or no cost.” In late September, the Chamber renewed this request before the City Commission expressing disappointment that no action has been taken. The Chamber now expects the Commission to take a vote on this issue sometime before the end of the year.

2014 Election Together with the Mason County Journal and MasonWebTV, the Chamber hosted a General Election Candidate Forum on October 13. Over one hundred people packed the room to hear from candidates for Congress, State Legislature, County Commission, Assessor and PUD#3 Commission. The candidates fielded questions, including many from the audience, on issues ranging from taxes on small business to transportation. Following the Candidate Forum, much attention was on two of the candidates, Tammey Newton (challenging incumbent Rep. Drew MacEwen) and Rep. Kathy Haigh, who walked off the stage before the start of the “lightning round.” The lightning round is a special feature of this forum, where candidates are asked about high profile issues and asked to hold up a card indicating “support” or “oppose.” This part of the forum, in particular, is popular in a day and age where it sometimes is difficult to determine where candidates stand. All legislative candidates were notified well in advance that this would again be a part of the forum and that they would have a three-minute closing statement to wrap up and expand upon any of their lightning round answers. There were seven lightning-round questions, ranging from “Do you support a $12 minimum wage?” to “Do you support or oppose I-594?” The Chamber later received an apology from Rep. Haigh for not participating in this part of the forum.

Mason County in 2007 when he joined the team at Hood Canal Communications. His nominator shared that “He obviously loves what he does and he loves making a difference in our community” and “he does all this with passion and love for helping others not because he has to, but because it is the right thing to do.” In addition to his full time job, Spencer volunteers over 2,000 hours every year as Lt. Firefighter/EMT for Mason County Fire District #6 and coaching South Mason Youth Soccer, where he serves as Vice President of Development for the soccer club. Bill Kendrick is a former Superintendent of Seattle Public Schools who moved to the Shelton area to enjoy retirement with his wife Carol. Though rather than indulging in leisure, Bill dedicated himself to enhancing Mason County’s quality of life. His nominator praised him saying, “We are blessed to have such a great man join our community who so freely shares his talents and expertise.” As a long-time member of Rotary and former Elder of First Baptist Church, Bill has unfailingly served others for more than 40 years. When he joined Love INC in 2010, he reached out to his regional connections and helped raise more than $230,000 to support the organization. Bill has received numerous awards which include Distinguished Alumnus and Distinguished Educator awards from Western Washington University, Lifetime Achievement Award from R.A. Long High School

in Longview, and Community Education National Superintendent of the Year. Patty Ayala Ross has been the manager of the Shelton Timberland/William G. Reed Public Library since 2006. She and her husband reside in Shelton and have five grown children; today they raise their 4-year-old grandson Jackson. Patty works hard at the library to set a vision and mission that are community driven and community minded and she was honored with the American Business Women’s Award of the Year in 2012 for her outstanding example. Her nominator said, “She strives to make Shelton a welcoming, inclusive place where everyone can flourish. Her approach builds community each and every day.” In addition to her role at the library, she devotes countless hours to local organizations – including United Way, League of Women Voters and Mason County Early Learning Coalition and is currently serving as a member of the Chamber Board of Trustees and Chair of the Sound Learning Board. 2014 VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR NOMINEES Volunteer of the Year nominees are recognized for their contributions to the Chamber’s programs and activities. John Lester is a Shelton High School graduate who, after living in Alaska and Georgia, returned home in 2008. Since that time, John has worked with his high school friend, Jeff McHargue, at Arnold Smith Insurance. His nominator said, “John genuinely enjoys helping people. His cheerful personality and can-do attitude draw others in. He does any and every task with kindness and without any expectation (or acceptance) of admiration.” John loves spending time with his family and he and his wife Kelly are often watching their two boys play sports. John feels “blessed beyond measure by God with a loving and supportive wife and children, encouraging parents and siblings, and incredible friends.” He brings this attitude to his volunteer activities, helping others at church and through Shelton Kiwanis, as well as participating in several Chamber events and programs committees. Jennifer Owens has truly made Mason County home after moving here nearly twenty years ago. Having grown up in the hospitality industry, Jennifer transitioned well in to customer service. She worked at Safeway for years before joining the team at

Peninsula Credit Union, where she is now the Branch Manager. In her position at the Credit Union she volunteers with Bank On Mason, Asset Building Coalition, Mason General Hospital Foundation’s Fantasy Forest, Relay For Life, and as an evaluator for Senior Projects at Shelton High School. Her nominator said, “Her unwavering dedication and work ethic are matched only by her positivity. Jennifer works tirelessly to help others wherever she finds a need and she fosters success in each and every program she touches.” Jennifer currently serves the Chamber as Vice President of Member Services and both serves and leads on committees. Outside of all of that, she enjoys spending time with her family – her husband Doyle and her children Amanda, Jonathan and Shawn. Susanna Samuelson, who lives in Mason County with her husband Matt and her two sons, is the business development officer for Our Community Credit Union. Prior to working at OCCU, she built her foundation and passion for community service while working for Catholic Charities. Now, Susanna lives out her favorite saying “You can do no great things, just 15 15

small things with great love” in each of her numerous volunteer activities. She sits on the Mason General Hospital Foundation Board, is the treasurer for the Olympic Middle School PTSO, and is the current President for United Way of Mason County in addition to her role on the Chamber’s Ambassador Committee. Her nominator touted her “supportive nature” and praised her for integrity as well as her true passion for helping individuals. This is especially evident in her recent efforts spearheading a community partner education grant program which offers classroom enrichment opportunities. The 2014 award winners will be revealed at the Annual Awards Gala to be held on Friday, January 16, 2015 at Little Creek Casino Resort. The Gala is a brilliant celebration of the amazing individuals and businesses that support the Chamber and Mason County. Tickets to attend the event will be made available towards the end of the season. For best available information, visit sheltonchamber.org/awards.

Holiday Magic | December 5-6

First Weekend of December Filled with Holiday Magic The holidays are just around the corner and downtown Shelton knows just how to kick off the season – with Holiday Magic! There has been a joint effort between the Kristmas Town Kiwanis and the Shelton Downtown Merchants to create two days of merriment and family activities and this year the tradition continues. It all starts Friday, December 5 with an early showing of Elf at Shelton Cinemas, free with your donation of canned food at Shelton Cinemas. Local businesses will be open late for holiday shopping with many hosting local artists. The Post Office Park tree lighting is at 6:00 PM, followed by a sing-along arranged by Harstine Island Community Choir. The performance features local school choirs along with the Harstine Island Quartet, creating more than 100 singers who will join together in rousing holiday songs to sing Santa into

Christmas Town, USA. The entire evening’s events are 3.5” free and the entire community is invited to attend. Saturday, December 6 you can finish filling out your game card as many businesses are open for shopping; or tighten your 3.5” xthe2” tennis shoes and join in “Missile Toe” Mile Run that begins at 4:00 PM. Celebrate Christmas on the Canal Janene Bandes | Owner of Pier 101 Gift Shop | Chamber Board of Trustees

Businesses all along the Hood Canal are typically lit up for the holidays; however, be prepared to see them take it a step further this year as we approach the very first “Christmas on the Canal.” Organized by the Chamber’s newly-formed Hood Canal Committee, this contest will show off some of Mason County’s jewels along the canal. Better than just showing off our spectacular stores, as people participate in the voting process they will earn entries for a basket full of goodies gathered from participating businesses – everything from food, wine, hotel stays and more! The business with the most votes will receive a plaque declaring them the winner and a year’s worth of bragging rights. So how does it work? The idea is simple… drive out along Hwy 101 & Hwy 106 and snap a picture of your favorite decorated storefront. “Like” the Christmas on the Canal Facebook page and post the picture there. Don’t forget to tag the business in the photo – this helps us determine which business is the winner of the contest! For every picture you post, you’ll receive five points. Every time someone likes your photo, you’ll gain another point. You’ll get one entry for the prize basket for each point. No worries if you’re not tech savvy and don’t use Facebook – every participating business will have a ballot box for you to cast your ballot for your favorite, for which you will receive one point.

Voting will begin on Friday, November 28, and end on Sunday, December 14. Both winners, the business and one lucky person who cast a vote, will be announced on Friday, December 19. Just in time for the holidays! Be prepared to be dazzled while you Shop Local!

Many of the businesses are also celebrating Small Business Saturday, which is on November 29. After registering your American Express card online, each time you spend $10 at a participating business, AmEx will credit your statement $10 (up to $30). For more information, read article on page 26.

Bright Lights and Big Hearts As we approach the holiday season, Christmas Town USA will again dress up in its trimmings of lights, garland, and greenery, as our winter beautification program opens. Together with Shelton Kiwanis Club and Hood Canal Communications, the décor sets a cozy setting for a hometown holiday. While some communities have discontinued their beautification programs, our community has rallied – putting us in a position to continue to adorn the streets with flower baskets in the summer and Christmas decorations in the winter. Residents and visitors alike have given generously and more than $20,000 in 2014 alone. With continued support, the Chamber is on track to sustain and hopefully expand the program over the next several years.

Day on the Greens Funds Education and Programs for Local Businesses The 4th Annual Chamber Golf Tournament, presented by Title Sponsors Alderbrook Resort & Spa and Alderbrook Golf Course saw nearly 100 players and dozens of businesses turn out for a fun-filled day on the greens – raising thousands of dollars to support Chamber events and programs. The day started off nicely thanks to Cart Sponsor Taylor Shellfish and the whole day’s play was filled with fun by way of Hole-in-One opportunities provided by Falcon Financial and Lucky Dog Casino as well as on-course games and giveaways safely tucked away in Swag Bags provided by Fred Meyer. As comedian Dave Hill says, “Golf is the hardest game in the world to play and the easiest to cheat at.” Our licorice rope and other purchasable advantages made it a little easier for participants to uphold their moral character on the course. Photo Sponsor John L. Scott captured the fun as a full field of golfers turned out for this year’s best-ball tournament and at the end of eighteen holes (avoiding Sand Trap Sponsor Miles Sand & Gravel when possible!) the competition was fierce. An array of high-end golf clubs, accessories, and prizes were awarded to the top teams following a summer end barbecue prepared by Alderbrook Resort’s executive Chef Lucas Sautter. First place this year went to Team Alderbrook Resort – Shaun Tucker, Jake Geist, Alex Charbonneau and Shawn Bonneux; the City of Shelton Team – Steve Goins, Brent Armstrong, Jon Armstrong and Gregg Clark – took second; and rounding out the winners was Team Safeway – Jamie Kennedy, Andy Erb, Joey Etter and Joe Gregg.

We would like to extend our sincere appreciation to this year’s golf tournament committee: Justin Gravatt, Jake Geist, John Lester, Jennifer Owens and staff Heidi McCutcheon and Deidre Eaton. Small Business Saturday Kicks-off Shop Local Holiday Campaign As you can see from the Santa photo provided by the Mason County Historical Society, the Chamber has inspired folks in Mason County to “Shop Local” for decades. This year our holiday Shop Local campaign will kick-off on Small Business Saturday, November 29 and run through the end of the year. Industrial, Commercial & Residential Since 1943, the Miles group of companies has supplied aggregate and ready mixed concrete in the greater Western Washington region. Our mission is to provide top quality products and services to help our customers meet today’s challenging construction schedules and specifications. If you have a project in our service area, please call and we would be glad to provide a quotation for aggregate and ready mix concrete.

BIGHT Shelton Mason County Chamber

For Chamber members, the reason to Shop Local is fairly straightforward: for relatively little discount or cost to their business, our marketing campaign will drive customers to their doors. Even if it merely brings a new person in, studies show that they are likely to return as a customer or purchase something other than the discounted item while they are there. Participation in our Shop Local campaign is a free benefit to our members – the Chamber pays for the marketing and advertising costs. By promoting our businesses, we are promoting our community. For all of you filling your holiday wish lists, it’s simple. Choosing to Shop Local makes a big difference. You may pay a dollar or two more at a local store, but you will not be paying as much for fuel to get there. There is also the fact that the sales tax stays here in Mason County. That means it goes toward our town, our roads and our schools. Furthermore, many local businesses will compete or match prices with box stores; from appliances to furniture – our business do what they can to give a fair, honest price while Today, we encourage you to choose to Shop Local while filling your Christmas lists. Along those lines, our belief is that the community should Shop Local because, when people purchase things locally, an average of 74 cents per dollar remains here in Mason County. 26

So what this really means is that roughly 3/4 of each dollar goes to keeping our stores open and, more importantly, employing people. when you purchase items out of town, it’s like none of these dollars will make their way back to us. And during the Shop Local holiday campaign (November 29 - December 31) you can get coupons for goods and services that you are likely already using – it’s just an added incentive to choose to Shop Local when filling your Christmas lists! Coupons may be used from Small Business Saturday (November 29, 2014) until New Year’s Eve (December 31, 2014) and will be available at the Chamber office in downtown Shelton or may be printed from sheltonchamber.org/shoplocal.

So What is Small Business Saturday?

Be on the Alert for Possible Telephone Scams

Now in its fifth year, Small Business Saturday is a national effort dedicated to strengthening the community by supporting local small businesses. Last year, over one hundred million people shopped small on Small Business Saturday and spent $5.5 billion with independent merchants. This year we want to help make the day even bigger – the Chamber recognizes the importance of supporting small business in Mason County, the jobs they help create and the culture they instill in local communities. According to the U.S. Small Businesses Administration, as of 2012, small businesses nationwide accounted for 64% of net new private-sector jobs created and represented 99.7% of all employer firms.1

Mason PUD#3 has received reports that a telephone scammer is targeting local residents.

To see a list of participating businesses and get involved, visit shopsmall.com and “like” the Small Business Saturday page at facebook.com/shopsmall. Additionally, many Chamber members offer discounts and specials to further encourage you to Shop Local. See the next page for a preview and get the full list at the Chamber office or print off your own copy from our website. Small Business Administration Office of Advocacy Frequently Asked Questions, September 2012

1

In September multiple customers received calls from someone claiming to be from the “power company.” They were told they owed on a utility bill and that the call is for collection of the payment. Most customers hung up and called PUD#3 right away. “Mason County PUD 3 does not make calls like this. Customers are sent a past due notice before accounts are at the point of disconnection,” said Diane Hennessy, PUD 3 customer service manager. Call the PUD directly if you have concerns about your bill and never give personal information over the phone to an unknown caller.

Moody Named New Shelton Police Chief Chief Darrin Moody was sworn in as the new Shelton Police Chief on Monday, November 10 following an official announcement by the City in September. At the Chamber luncheon the following Friday, Chief Moody declared his intent to build on the department’s existing strengths and focus on building community – collaborating with other departments and organizations, conducting walking patrols, and identifying opportunities to serve the residents. Moody has a successful law enforcement career. He served Fairfield Police Department in California for 25 years, demonstrating leadership as the Police Captain since 2010. Prior to that, he was with the Modesto Police Department in California

for two years where he served as Community Service Officer. Chief Moody earned an associate degree in Criminal Justice from Napa Valley College, California, a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice from Union Institute & University, Sacramento, California, and he is currently working on a master's degree in Homeland Security from American Military University. The employment search was conducted by the Prothman Group, hired by the City, to recruit for the position. The interview process was extensive, including a public meet and greet as well as formal panel-style interviews.
