So much was accomplished in 2013! As you’ll see in Melanie and Brian’s messages, we had a successful year in achieving our goals.

I find the nice thing about setting goals is that in everything we consider doing at the Chamber, I can question myself: does this fit into our goals? And if it doesn’t fit into our goals; does it inhibit our ability to achieve those goals? It amazes me how easily these two questions can clarify a decision.

It doesn’t seem that it’s been four months since our Golf Tournament, but then, time flies!

You can check out page 16 to see the results (the competition was fierce!). I love to hit the greens and I’m considering putting together a golf league for the upcoming spring/summer.

A little golf, a little networking, an excuse to get to know others with the same hobbies…

I’m thinking maybe every other week at various courses within Mason County. Get in touch with me if you’d like to join in.

Our membership continues to grow and new entrepreneurs continue to open up shop. Take the time to stop in and check things out. Better yet, buy something! Many people don’t make the connection that shopping locally supports our community. The money you spend here goes toward employee’s wages, kid’s sports teams, and many other programs. Did you know that studies show our small businesses are 250% more likely to support our community? Support our businesses so they can keep their doors open.

Our Gala was just weeks ago – what an event!

Little Creek Casino Resort again pulled out all the stops with their sponsorship and support.

This year the menu was a five course meal with wine pairings, my favorite course was the seared scallops. Yum! Melanie Bakala of State Farm Insurance started us out with a “Toast to 2013” and we raised our glasses to join in, courtesy of Quinault Beach Resort, the evening’s wine sponsor. The beautiful programs, menu cards, tickets… all the printed materials – were supplied by The Shopper. If you haven’t seen their print work, you should definitely stop in to see what they are able to do. From design work to the print itself, it’s pretty spectacular.

Our Board of Trustees is also growing – this year we welcome Wes Taylor of Taylor Shellfish. Wes has experience working in both government and for profit as he worked for the WSDOT accounting department and spent years working in public accounting. He and his wife, Brittany, are expecting their first child this spring and in his spare time, Wes also serves on the Mason County Economic Development Council. Wes joins a team of dedicated business leaders on the Chamber Board who provide the vision for the Chamber and provide direction on how to best support our members. I am proud to work with each of the board members as we continue in our mission to encourage and maintain a vibrant business community, promote tourism and facilitate economic development.

At the Gala, we announced our nominees and the winners of our annual awards. I wish that I could give each nominee an award as they are all very deserving. I was so pleased to see those whom our Chamber members selected to honor this year. You can see their photos and biographies on page 6.

We also announced the travel opportunity for 2014: Scenic Ireland! No, you don’t have to own a business or be a Chamber member to attend. Some say that travel is the only thing you can buy that makes you richer. With the wealth of experience, understanding of other cultures and the realization of just how good we have it, I tend to agree. Check out page 20 for more information.

On a final note of what was accomplished in 2013, I’m proud to tell you that I officially graduated from WACE Academy. Academy is an interactive 3-day (three year) training program on chamber management essentials designed for today’s chamber executives and staff professionals. During the time spent to earn the degree, I have met great colleagues from British Columbia to Colorado who have been a great source of ideas, been willing and ready to share best practices, offered their support and whom I am proud to call my peers.

With this beginning to 2014, it seems the sky is the limit!

First, I would like to thank those that have come before me building a foundation which has strengthened and solidified the Shelton-Mason County Chamber of Commerce. Past Presidents, Board Members, and Executive Directors have been committed to serving the Chamber at the very highest levels and have done a marvelous job.

Having been a Board Member, President Elect, and now President of the Board of Trustees, I can say without hesitation that this Chamber is represented by some of the most talented and committed people I have worked with in over 36 years of professional and business experience.

Did you know that our Executive Director, Heidi McCutcheon, routinely receives calls from other Chambers of Commerce seeking advice on a myriad of topics? Generally these inquiries relate to how our Chamber has continued to grow and prosper during difficult business climates. They desire to know how we blaze trails of innovation that energize and strengthen our ability to serve our members.

Our Past President Melanie Bakala implemented some attainable strategic goals in 2013 which could be measured monthly.

In practicality, these goals seemed simple and straight forward, but in real terms of actual practice they were immense in their effect. Now, Melanie is much to humble to toot her own horn, but by joining with Heidi, the Board, and the Chamber staff, she achieved each and every one of these goals.

First hand, I have witnessed an energized membership grow in size and participation.

Monthly Membership meetings have flourished and become more vibrant, Business After Hours events have become so very popular (with the exception of one event which happened to be scheduled as the Seahawks played) that waiting lists have been created as events sponsorships have booked up. Finally, I am very pleased to report that your Chamber is operating in the black.

As I write this I am reminded of our Chambers Mission Statement; to encourage and maintain a vibrant business community, promote tourism and facilitate economic development. Those mission words maintain and vibrant were clearly supported and enhanced by the goals of 2013.

In closing, I have a few goals of my own for 2014 and have outlined them for the Board of Trustees, who adopted them at the January Board Retreat. In the coming months I hope to report in greater detail about those goals and how we are achieving them.

Promoting local communication Melanie Bakala | State Farm Insurance Past President of the Chamber Board Shelton-Mason Chamber of Commerce Board of Trustees had three primary goals for 2013. I’d like to share how we fared in our efforts.

Improve communication

Improve our education and communication of the benefits the Chamber provides to our members with the goal of growing our membership to 368 members by the end of 2013. We recognized that our members are busy running their business, and don’t always have the time to seek out the benefits. We determined that we needed to be more strategic in our communication with our members and we convened a strategic communications committee that came up with ideas for being more effective in our communications through the BIGHT, Facebook, and our weekly eBlasts.

The result was a growth in our membership to 358 members – 97% of our goal. The board is pleased with this result, and the marketing committee will continue efforts in improving communication with our members.

Focus on operating in the black

As businesses struggled with income and growth over the past few years, the Chamber also found itself dipping into reserves to keep forging ahead. As we saw improvement in the economy, we decided it was time to buckle down turn things around.

Through strong financial guidance from our finance committee, and the successful introduction of the BIGHT quarterly community magazine, we are pleased to tell you that we accomplished this goal and are moving in the direction to be able to focus on growing your Chamber.

Increase participation in events by 10%.

More engaged members mean more participation in our Chamber events. In 2013, while attendance in the monthly membership meetings decreased, the participation in our larger events – the Annual Gala, our Auction, The Business Expo and Bite of Shelton, and our Golf Tournament – all experienced a significant increase in attendance. We also saw an increase in attendance in our monthly Business After Hour events.

The best part about having these goals is that when we sat down to plan for 2014, we are able to build on our successes from last year, and also make plans to make improvement in the areas that need it. I am very proud of the accomplishments of our Chamber this year – due to the efforts of our Chamber Executive Heidi McCutcheon and Office Manager Deidre Eaton, and the leadership of our Board.

2014 is looking to be a banner year for the Chamber and Mason County businesses!

2013 award winners announced at annual Gala Annually the Shelton-Mason County Chamber of Commerce hosts members and the community at the Awards Gala presenting the prestigious Business of the Year, Citizen of the Year, Volunteer of the Year, and President’s Choice awards.

The semi-formal event, presented

by Premier Sponsor Little Creek Casino Resort, began with a word from sponsors, after a Toast to 2013 by Awards Sponsor, Melanie Bakala, State Farm Insurance.

The sold out crowd enjoyed a delectable five course meal, the menu ranging from seared scallops to Wagyu beef expertly paired with wines by Little Creek’s grand sommelier. The wines were provided by the sponsorship of Quinault Beach Resort Casino, much to the crowd’s delight. Everything from the menu cards outlining these specialties to the table numbers and place cards were beautifully created

by The Shopper, the event’s Media Sponsor.

The Chamber’s executive director Heidi McCutcheon presented the annual State of the Chamber Address which hit on the highlights of 2013. This year, many of the Chamber’s sponsors provided giveaways that coincided with the presentation. The evening progressed with the Honorable Victoria Meadows presiding over the 2014 Installation of the Board of Trustees and with appreciation to outgoing board member and past president Drew MacEwen. photos: Cooper Studios (See page 3 for a list of the 2014 Board Members.)

As the event wrapped, all of the nominees were honored and the winners for the 2013 awards were announced by McCutcheon and Bakala. McCutcheon says, “We are so fortunate to have an abundance of businesses and organizations who strive to make Mason County a better place to live, work and play. Again this year, I know the recipients of our awards truly reflect this character. Our community is a better place because of them.”

Taking home top nods were Business of the Year Cameo Boutique, Citizen of the Year Patti Case, Volunteer of the Year Sue Patterson, and President’s Choice Hood Canal Communications.

Business of the Year honors the business that made the most significant contribution benefiting the Mason County business community over the past year. Any size business is eligible as the Chamber recognizes overall contributions improving our community and the business climate. This year’s nominees included Cameo Boutique & Wine Shop, Cogent Construction, Green Diamond Resource Co., Hama Hama Oyster Co., Hiawatha Evergreens, Peninsula Credit Union, Shelton Timberland Library, and Simpson Lumber Co.

The award went to Cameo Boutique & Wine Shop in Union, owned by Pam & Gary Hanson.

Gary is a Consulting Forester and serves wine samples at the boutique on weekends. Pam is an 1971 Shelton High graduate and she opened Cameo in 1983 after working at local financial institutions for more than a decade. The Hansons and Cameo are active in the community and continue to support charitable events and groups year after year. They are heavily involved at Harmony Hill; Pam is also currently sitting on their Advisory Board. Pam & Gary live in Union and are members of the Union Tourism Association, of which Pam has served as president.

Six citizens were nominated for the 2013 Citizen of the Year award, which honors individuals who have made outstanding contributions to enhance the business community and the community at large and who have given freely of their time, talent, energy and expertise. The nominees were Patti Case, Amy Cooper, Xinh Dwelley, Caroline Rich, Terri Shaw, and Barb Weza.

Patti Case took home the 2013 award.

Patti is a key member of the Mason County community – both professionally and personally. After graduating from Shelton High in 1975, she earned degrees at both the University of Washington and the Washington Agriculture and Forestry Leadership Program before taking a position Patti Case at Green Diamond photo: Cooper Studios Resource Company. In addition to her demanding role as Green Diamond’s Public Affairs/Regulatory Manager, Patti gives an enormous amount of her time to the service of others – often in leadership roles. She has served on the Boards numerous local organizations and various industry advocacy groups; she has also served on the Chamber’s Board of Trustees, including two terms as President.

Volunteer of the Year nominees are recognized for their contributions to the Chamber's programs and activities. These volunteers have given their time, talents, energies and expertise in an effort to enhance the business community and the community at large. Lisa Brengan, Julie Nichols, Sue Patterson, and Lisa Woodard were nominated this year.

This year’s volunteer honoree, Sue Patterson, has served on many Chamber committees from auction planning to beautification – for which her Flower Dough bake sale has become a staple of the annual campaign. In addition Sue Patterson to her participation photo: Cooper Studios at the Chamber, she is a champion for several local charities, volunteering for Senior Services for South Sound as a Board member and for their Bright Lives Fundraiser, chairing MGH Foundation’s Fantasy Forest for many years, co-chairing a table for Turning Pointe’s “Power of the Purse,” baking her famous treats for the United Way dessert auction, and so much more.

by Past President Drew MacEwen, the President’s Choice award was bestowed on a member of the Chamber. In 2013, President Melanie Bakala selected Hood Canal Communications to receive the honor. She said: “Hood Canal Communication’s dedicated staff & management team contribute countless hours to non-profits, while the company itself provides financial and physical support to local organizations year round. This year, they even “saved Christmas” by donating their equipment and manpower to assist the Chamber and the local Kiwanis clubs by hanging the holiday decorations just three days before the parade.

Their approach to business and their approach to each day demonstrate exceptional commitment and high spirits! A pillar in the community, they strive to provide serve the community as well as they their serve their customers – and that is high praise.”

Say goodbye to LOCAL BUCK$

In September of 2011, the Chamber rolled out a program called LOCAL BUCK$ to further encourage Mason County residents to shop locally.

LOCAL BUCK$ were sold in increments of $5, $10 & $20 and worked the same as a gift certificate at more than forty participating businesses in Mason County.

Due to a lack of participation and the fact that many of LOCAL BUCK$ were not being redeemed, a survey of Chamber members was conducted to gauge the commitment to the program. Most respondents stated that they were only participating as a show of support for Chamber programs. An overwhelming amount of the respondents stated the LOCAL BUCK$ program added little value to their business and more than 55% stated that they themselves had never used LOCAL BUCK$.

As the results of this survey indicate the low value to our members, the Chamber will be discontinuing the LOCAL BUCK$ program. If you are in possession of LOCAL BUCK$, they will continue to be redeemed at the Chamber office though June 30, 2014.

Though this program ultimately missed the mark, the Chamber stands behind the benefits of shopping locally and promotes several ‘Shop Local’ campaigns throughout the year.

Shaping the Chamber’s future

Chamber Board of Trustees An all-day meeting can be a real drain for busy business owners and managers in terms of both time and concentration power. However, the Chamber Board Retreat held on January 6 proved just the opposite. Board members came away revitalized and ready to lead Chamber efforts in the New Year.

A Lighthouse on Hammersley

The retreat was held at the scenic A Lighthouse on Hammersley Bed and Breakfast which turned out to be an ideal setting for the Chamber Board to really dig in. 2013 goals were reviewed and discussed at length. We reached two of the three goals, and just missed the third. Go to page 5 for an in-depth review by past president Melanie Bakala.

The possible effects any change might have on the organization and the membership has been considered at length. Focus groups have been hosted and the membership has been sampled for opinions on the new tiered plan. Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, so the Chamber Board has decided to move forward with the plan.

The board also reviewed the ongoing work of present committees, elected its 2014 officers, heard from the incoming president Brian Kelly, reviewed potential new board members and discussed staffing matters. The board also spent some time brainstorming the potential reasons behind low attendance at recent membership meetings and is hopeful that it will rise in the near future.

Under the new system some benefits remained or were changed, many were created, and some others were removed altogether. Adopting the tiered benefits system is a significant change for our members but with it comes great benefit.

The transition will be phased and allow plenty of time for adjustment.

Tiered membership dues were also under intense discussion. The Chamber plans to roll out this new structure to members in mid-2014.

Consideration towards changing to tiered dues began in 2010 as the membership committee looked at other organizations who have made a successful transition.

Friday, March 7 will launch a new one-hour morning program “Coffee and Conversation” with the Chamber’s executive director Heidi McCutcheon. Simply put, you are invited to share coffee and conversation with Heidi and fellow Chamber members. Throw out your ideas, gain insight, get advice, and share your perspective on what’s happening in the business community. Want to know more about what

All in all this was an important day and a great use of time! Reviewing the accomplishments of last year, discussing ongoing Chamber business and setting new goals—all at such a serene Mason County location—was the perfect prescription to remind members of the important work of the Chamber as the group charges ahead in 2014.

Golfers make second annual golf tournament a success

The third Annual Chamber Golf Tournament, presented by Title Sponsors Alderbrook Resort & Spa and Alderbrook Golf Course, was a great day of networking and golf – raising thousands of dollars to support Chamber events and program.

The day started off nicely thanks to Cart Sponsor Bakala State Farm Insurance and the whole day’s play was filled with fun by way of Hole-in-One opportunities provided by Olsen Furniture and Shelton Dental Excellence as well as on-course games, giveaways, and “purchasable advantage!” As comedian Dave Hill says, “Golf is the hardest game in the world to play and the easiest to cheat at.” Our licorice rope and other purchasable advantages made it a little easier for participants to uphold their moral character on the course.

Chamber provides legislative priorities Julie Sund Nichols | Whitehouse & Nichols, LLP

The Washington Legislature, for the first time in several years, opened up the 2014 session on January 13 without a budget deficit to address. Still, the battle lines were immediately drawn in Olympia: Reform versus Revenue.

The Chamber Board, together with the North Mason Chamber, once again developed a set of priorities to present to Senator Tim Sheldon (D-Potlatch), Rep. Kathy Haigh (D-Shelton) and Rep. Drew MacEwen (R-Union). Chamber members gathered the first week of January for the annual Legislative Send Off where these priorities were formally presented, and all three legislators fielded questions on a variety of issues.

Control in Olympia

The Democrats remain in control of the House and the Governor’s Mansion in Olympia. But the Majority Coalition is back in the Senate.

This bi-partisan group formed just before the 2013 session, when two Democratic senators, Tim Sheldon (D-Potlatch) and Rodney Tom (D-Medina), joined with 23 Republicans to shift control of the Senate.

Chamber priorities

The 2014 priorities include a request to legislators that they follow the principle of “Do No Harm” to business. As the economy inches toward recovery, it is more important than ever to protect employers from excessive fees and onerous regulations.

Next, the Chamber asked legislators to truly prioritize the activities of government, eliminate redundancies and reform regulatory systems before asking for new revenue.

More specific priorities include: further reforms to the state’s unstable workers’ compensation system so that employers won’t be faced with higher rates (specifically expanding the “struc-

tured settlement” program that is a proven cost saver); protecting Mason County’s resource industries from increased taxes and regulations; and ensuring that rural communities aren’t forgotten in the discussions about a statewide transportation package.

Outlook for 2014 session

Transportation. From his seat as a leader in the Senate Majority Coalition, Senator Sheldon told Chamber members to look for Transportation as a big issue this session. While the Governor and House leaders support a 10 cent gas tax, Senate leaders continue to insist on significant reforms at DOT, especially in light of the 520 pontoon cracks and the more recent troubles with the Seattle tunnel project. Senator Sheldon pointed out to Chamber members that he does not believe Mason County residents want an additional 10 cent gas tax and he reiterated his position that any revenue proposal must come with significant reforms to ensure that taxpayers are getting the most for their tax dollar.

Education. Legislators were surprised - just days before they gathered in Olympia - by a Supreme Court decision concluding that the state is not doing enough, fast enough, to fulfill its constitutional obligation to fully fund basic education, despite the additional $1 billion for basic education that lawmakers approved last year. This decision immediately resulted in tax increase proposals from the Governor and other Democrats. While the Majority Coalition Caucus leaders responded that reforms to the K-12 system to limit non-education expenses could reduce or eliminate the need for a major tax increase.

Rep. Haigh stated that her focus continues to be fully funding our education system, and will be at the center of the storm as legislators decide how to respond to the Court’s decision – which many believe to be overstepping the Court’s constitutional authority.

Minimum Wage

Governor Inslee and others are pushing for an increase in the minimum wage – perhaps up to $15.00/hr. This proposal is already seeing wide opposition from employers all over the state, given that Washington already has the highest state minimum wage in the country, $9.32 an hour.

B&O tax reform

In the opening week of session, Rep. MacEwen introduced a bill offering businesses relief from the state’s B&O tax, hoping to build on some of the momentum of the special session in November when lawmakers approved an incentive package to keep Boeing in Washington. Instead of the current structure of B&O tax and credits for certain industries, MacEwen’s bill (House Bill 2264) would give businesses a choice of three deductions from the B&O tax in each filing year: 1) costs of goods sold; 2) 30 percent of gross revenue; or 3) up to $300,000 in employee compensation. “I firmly believe we can fix our state’s economy by retooling how we tax businesses to compete seriously with other states and countries,” MacEwen said.

SKOKOMISH TOURISM

Construction work began this month on the Washington National Guard Shelton Armory as Mason Transit Authority (MTA) repurposes the building into the Transit-Community Center at The Armory, at 601 W Franklin St, built in 1955 and purchased by MTA in 2006.

The $10 million dollar project is funded by a combination of Federal Transit Administration (FTA) and State of Washington grants supplemented with MTA funds and private donations.

The construction effort begins with the removal of hazardous materials and demolition of the vehicle storage facility where tanks were housed.

The project is scheduled for completion in January 2015 and will house community events and programs for all ages. It will include a transit hub, refurbished gym, commercial-grade teaching kitchen, computer lab, conference rooms and leased program and enterprise space.

“This is exciting for Mason Transit Authority, the City of Shelton and Mason County!” said MTA General Manager Brad Patterson. “The Transit-Community Center will provide a centralized location where people of all ages can come to meet, receive services, recreate, learn and socialize, and make their connections through public transit. We look forward to opening the doors a year from now.”

According to FTA Administrator Peter Rogoff, this innovative project will be the first in the nation built to combine transit and community centers in one building.

What do the Seattle Seahawks and flower baskets have in common? Great community support!

On Super Bowl Sunday, the employees at Mason County PUD#3 kicked off 2014 flower basket fundraising in a big way! Showing their support for both the Hawks and the Chamber’s beautification program, individual employees created a private pool committing $200 for each touchdown the Seahawks made at the Super Bowl.

The lovely flower baskets that grace our streets during the summer would not be possible without our community’s involvement, like that of the PUD#3 employees. Not only is the Forest Festival celebrating three score and ten, this year our area will be garnering national attention as our local businesses fill with contestants, media and spectators as Shelton becomes the location for the 2014 Stihl Timbersports Professional Western Qualifier, May 31.

Established in 1985, the STIHL® TIMBERSPORTS® Series assembles top lumberjacks from around the globe to compete. The Series is seen by over 20 million viewers annually in over 62 countries.

Athletes compete in a variety of disciplines based on traditional logging skills to determine the best all-around lumberjack. Disciplines include Hot Saw, Single Buck, Springboard Chop, Standing Block Chop, Stock Saw and Underhand Chop.

The professionals in the Series compete in five regional professional qualifiers throughout America.

This year the Western competition will occur in Shelton, WA. This Series Professional events will be broadcasted on ABC Network.

Professional athletes will be competing for the chance to go to the U.S. championship right here in Mason County.

Since 2011, with the growing popularity of the Series and growth

of international competitions, the U.S. Series has only been open to U.S. athletes in the regional qualifiers. The World Championship competitions are the venue for international competition. There are 40 total open slots, 8 from each region, for professionals looking to compete and qualify for the championship.

Athletes are ranked, and then divided up with ten athletes per region based on ranking and home location.

The top four individuals from each region then move on to the championship venue. The top U.S. chop saw competitor advances to the World Championship competition in Holland.

This year marks the 70th Annual Mason County Forest Festival. The 2014 theme is “Our Logging Legacy,” a fitting tribute for the host of the Series and an amazing opportunity to embrace and educate about our forestry heritage. (continued next page)

The Mason County Forest Festival originally begun in 1945 to combat the devastating effects of forest fire through raising awareness late in the spring before the hot dry weather began. The Festival honored the area’s logging history by showcasing the value of timber

to the community. As now, 70 years later, the event features a parade, royalty and Paul Bunyan.

Today the Forest Festival event also encompasses a community run, forest court complete with a Paul Bunyan and Smokey the Bear, as well as a car show, logging show and carnival.

The 2014 addition of the STIHL® TIMBERSPORTS® Series Profes-

sional Western Qualifier will garner national attention and is expected to infuse the event with renewed interest.

The Mason County Forest Festival Association is a non-profit organization run by dedicated volunteers.

Every gardener knows that purchasing soil and amendments for your garden can be tough on the pocket book. Why not make amendments from things that you would normally send to the landfill? Composting is a wonderful way to be green and give a present to your plants at the same time.

Composting carries out part of the earth’s biological cycle of growth and decay. Plants grow by capturing the sun’s energy along with carbon dioxide from the air and nutrients and water from the soil. When plants die, they become raw materials for the composting or decay process.

Microorganisms, insects, and other creatures convert the carbon from dead plants into energy for their own growth, releasing carbon dioxide into the air. They recycle the nutrients from

the decaying plants into their own bodies and eventually back into the soil, and the cycle begins again.

If you are interested in learning more about composting, a Master Gardner’s workshop is being held Saturday, March 15, 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM at Memorial building, container gardens and raised beds will be discussed. Cost is $10, pre-register at (360) 427-9670 Ext. 680 to ensure enough materials.

What makes a GREAT spring cleaning

What to look for in a deep clean

After being cooped up indoors for the winter, it’s time to fling open the windows, shoo away the cobwebs, and take on your annual spring cleaning. Many may not enjoy cleaning or may not have enough time to do it, but the truth is that anybody can clean. Now if we talk about proper cleaning, we are talking about a whole new level.

That takes time, experience, common sense, skills and A LOT of passion. If you are paying someone to do the cleaning for you and if they don’t have any of those must-have principles, you might not be getting your money’s worth. To assist you in this review, take a look at the deep cleaning checklist I’ve prepared in the right column.

Most cleaning companies train their staff to rotate these areas as follows; using a regular bi-weekly maid service as an example, a cleaning company would detail all bathrooms and the kitchen in one visit and then detail the dusting and vacuuming on the rest of the house or business during the following visit.

It is difficult – if not impossible – to maintain a house or commercial facility dust free and entirely clean at all times.

If you take five minutes of your time to walk around your house or commercial facility and review the areas on the checklist, it will give you a general idea of what the rest of the building looks like. If you have a cleaning company that is taking the time to clean areas that are often overlooked by the owner or visitors, they will more likely do a great job at more visible areas.

These areas are where time, experience, common sense, skill and passion should come together. Any cleaning company applying these principles to their work will successfully maintain a clean and sharp house or commercial facility at all times. After checking the areas in your home or commercial facility on the deep clean list, you will realize if you are getting the desired results.

The inside of the toilet bowl is clean, but have you checked the base of the toilet and the bottom of the toilet seat?

Light fixtures, including light bulbs, should be dust free so the amount of dust should be minimal to none. If you are able to clearly see dust, it means that the vents have not been cleaned in well over two months, sometimes even years.

Kitchen: Scrubbing down the backsplash is easy to miss while wiping down the counter but doing so means a cleaner, healthier prep space. Use the correct cleaners for your kitchen counters to ensure that they are properly cleaned and are important for surface maintenance (especially on granite or marble counter tops). When cleaning the outside of your kitchen cabinetry, consider thoroughly cleaning the inside as well.

Throughout your home: Take the time to address your ceilings, removing spider webs, cleaning ceiling fans, chandeliers, light fixtures, can lights, vents, etc.

Did you know? While spider webs can appear from one day to another, when looking closely you can tell whether it is new or old; a new spider web is really thin and can hardly be spotted when the light is shining against it and old spider web will be thicker and will usually hang a little lower due to the dust that it has collected making it a lot easier to spot even without light.

Move furniture when cleaning your floors, both carpeted and hard surfaces.

Slide your finger along the baseboards to check for dust and debris; baseboards should be cleaned at least once a month.

Check doors for food, make up, handprints, etc.

Just like the spider webs, they can appear from one day to another and stay there for long periods of time.
