2016 BOARD OF TRUSTEES

I wear a lot of hats. In any given week, I play the part of event coordinator, marketing specialist, public relations & social media guru, psychotherapist, tour guide, media consultant, golf expert, government liaison, volunteer tactician, and all-around decent human being. I am capable of warm smiles, firm handshakes and 16 hour days. Call me crazy, but I love it. There is something insanely rewarding about working hard for the community I grew up in. The community that allowed me, and even pushed me, to become the person I am today. When I began at the Chamber, I was vaguely familiar with the work it does since I had been active in other Chambers. I had no idea the number of hats that I would wear or how much of a difference the Chamber can make. It is the Chamber Board – a volunteer group of business owners and managers – who set the vision and goals. This group is the reason that the Chamber has been able to make a difference in our community. Our Chamber is run by our members; businesses, organizations, and service clubs who pay annual membership dues. Every year, our members elect a Board of Trustees to determine policies and sets goals. The Board’s elected President (Jennifer Owens) presides over the monthly board meetings. Everyday operations are handled by the Executive Director (that’s me). I am a paid employee who works at the direction set by the Board of Trustees. Over the past year, we have made great strides together.

One of the newest membership perks is our partnership with Green Diamond Resource Company which extends a complimentary keycard to their Mason Lake Recreational Area to every Chamber member. One of our greatest successes over the past year has been to advance the Shelton Visioning Plan to ensure a vibrant future for our downtown core, while paying homage to our historical past. One of the most influential things that we’ve done is successfully organizing a youth entrepreneurship program at Hood Canal School; this school year we will expand the program to Olympic Middle School. The items outlined above are just a sampling of the activities the Chamber is working on for the benefit of our community. Our success is based upon having a strong Board who can represent the diversity of our member businesses. From retail to natural resources, from Hoodsport to Shelton, we work hard to ensure that our members are reflected within the Board members who are responsible to make decisions. In October, at our membership meeting, we will announce the nominations for the ensuing Board of Trustees term.

Nominees are recommended by the Nominating Committee and must be members in good standing whom have consented to serve; additional nominations will be taken from the floor during the membership meeting, so long as the nominee is also in good standing and has given their consent to serve for the twoyear term. The meeting will be held on Thursday, October 20 from 11:30 AM – 1:00 PM; additional details will be made available at sheltonchamber. org/mmm. Beginning with the annual retreat in January, the Board identifies the Chamber’s priorities and meets monthly to determine policies, set goals for the Chamber, and address business items. They are charged to support the organization, its programs and policies – assisting the Chamber in fulfilling its mission to maintain a vibrant business community, promote tourism, and facilitate economic development. I am blessed by the quality of volunteer leadership that makes up the Chamber Board of Trustees.

You Can Be Part of Going Back to School

Jennifer Owens | 2016 Chamber Board President Branch Manager, Peninsula Credit Union Shelton

One of the goals set by the Chamber Board for 2016 is to actively engage in our local schools. We have had success in our ongoing efforts by coordinating many partnerships with our business members and our local schools. This year was the second successful year that the Chamber led Lemonade Day at Hood Canal School, and our first year partnering with teachers at Olympic Middle School, however we continue to look at ways to expand and streamline our efforts to maximize the positive impact on the students. As a person that has participated in activities within our schools, I felt pretty confident that I was well versed in the programs that help children and young adults in our community. After doing some research, I learned that there were many more programs than I realized. While there is an ongoing need in our community to help our youth, there are a variety of ways in which to help, be it through volunteering or donating items or contributing money. Here are just some of the ways you can help our local students. The HOPE Garden began in 2009 when Mason General Hospital & Family of Clinics donated a small piece of their property for a community garden. HOPE empowers Mason County youth to develop healthy lifestyles and make positive choices through access to gardening, good food, movement, and community.

My niece had an opportunity to help at the HOPE Garden. She joined the program because she loved gardening with my mom and grandma when she was younger. From building flower beds, mixing the dirt and mulch, to the planting of the garden, she loved every bit of the experience. On Saturdays, she would help at the Farmers Market selling the products they grew. This opportunity gave her a chance to learn teamwork and how working hard can help others in need. You can also participate and learn all about it at hopegardenproject.org. Each year the Shelton School District applies for state funding to help coordinate and collaborate with other local agencies to provide comprehensive services to homeless students and their families. It also offers expedited evaluations of the needs to help them enroll in

school, attend regularly, and achieve success. These funds help provide students with backpacks, school supplies, and other item needed to get them ready for the first day of school. As you can imagine, these funds alone don’t supply the students with all they need to get them through the year, so the school district also organizes its own food bank, clothing bank and accepts extra backpacks throughout the year. You can help by donating items, supplies or funds to the programs. To donate, just call (360) 426-1687. The HOST program offers support to goal-driven homeless students ages 16-21 through community-based housing and advocating for education. Students live with volunteer HOST families or in supportive transitional housing and are mentored by a program coordinator located at CHOICE High

School. Participants receive financial assistance, life skills development, and educational support to help them transition into independent adulthood. Students can receive transition services for 6 to 12 months after graduating high school or attaining a GED. More information can be found at mason-co-host.org. Whether you have a student in need or you want to play a supporting role, there are many programs available. The assistance and mentorship that young people receive from our community can make the difference between a student lost along the way and one who thrives and is successful. I feel blessed to be a part of that difference and I am thankful to belong to place where so many of you are too.

Chamber Seeks to Recognize Outstanding Businesses & People A person who feels appreciated will always do more than expected. This isn’t just a nice sounding quote; it is a fact that has been scientifically proven. Here is your prompt to say “thank you” to someone that you know has made a difference in our community. Mason County is blessed with businesses and individuals that push for the best. It’s time again to tout those accomplishments and draw attention to those unsung heroes. Who do you believe should be awarded as the Business of the Year, Citizen of the Year, and Volunteer of the Year? Nominations are open to the entire community and may be submitted to the Chamber office via email or through the website at sheltonchamber. org/awards until Friday, October 21, 2016. Nominations will be reviewed by the Member Services Committee and a slate of up to five nominees per category will be forward to the Chamber Board of Trustees for ratification. As always, ballots will be mailed to all members in good standing – each Chamber member is permitted one vote for each category. The vote by the membership will determine the winners. The 2016 award announcements will be made at the Annual Awards Gala which will be held on Friday, January 20, 2017 at Little Creek Casino Resort. Executive director Heidi McCutcheon says, “It is one of my favorite celebrations of the year; a night solely dedicated to showing our appreciation, extending our gratitude, and recognizing our volunteers and businesses for all they do for our community. We are extraordinarily blessed with the caliber of those who share their talents to further Mason County.”

Business of the Year honors the business that made the most significant contribution benefiting the Shelton and Mason County BIGHT Shelton Mason County Chamber

business community over the past year.  Last year, the award went to Smoking Mo’s who was touted for their “true community spirit, partnering with other businesses and organizations and showcasing collaboration for the greater good.”

From a long list of valued people who give their time, talents, energies and expertise to enhance the business community and the community at large, the 2015 recipient was Michelle Corral, former branch manager at Heritage Bank. “Michelle has great talent and an even bigger heart” her nomination read. And, once every five years, the Chamber bestows a Lifetime Dedication Award. In 2015, Billie Howard—who was born and raised in Mason County, dedicating countless hours to numerous community projects—took home the honor.

Shelton Police Chief Darrin Moody was elected the 2015 Citizen of the Year, an award given to the individual who has made the most outstanding contributions to enhance the business community and the community at large and who has given freely of their time, talent, energy and expertise. His nomination specifically pointed to his involvement and dedication toward our community.

The Chamber also recognizes its volunteers for their contributions to the Chamber's programs and activities. 6

The President’s Choice award went to Senior Services of South Sound. ThenPresident Kelley Crabtree praised the non-profit for “providing vital services to a demographic in our community that is near and dear to [her] heart; our aging senior population” and for leveraging resources to provide compassionately for those in need. We invite the community to both submit nominations and to purchase tickets to attend the January 20 Annual Awards Gala. It is a brilliant celebration of the amazing individuals and businesses that support the Chamber and Mason County. Your nomination can be made online today at sheltonchamber.org/awards or stop by the Chamber office at 215 W Railroad Ave to pick up a nomination form.

Chamber Shares Chalk, Happiness Remember when you were a kid and you'd draw pictures and write happy thoughts with chalk in your driveway and down the sidewalks of your street? And the adults always smiled when they read the big, pastel-colored messages?  Chalk the Walks and it is just like that. Only we're bigger now and we don't have to go in the house when the street lights go out. An idea is as simple as it was in childhood: write happy messages, have fun doing it, and spread some joy while you're at it. The Chamber handed out 50 boxes of chalk to children and adults who reveled in the fun! Chamber member businesses Hood Canal Communications, Maple Glen Senior Living, Mason Transit Authority, Olsen Furniture, Peninsula Credit Union, and Rockets & Rainbows joined in the celebration and hosted chalking events around Mason County – bringing joy and childlike wonder to all.

In case you missed it, here are some snapshots from this year’s event. Join us next year on August 15, 2017 to spread the joy.

Chamber Expo Showcases Business, Downtown Potential This year the annual Business & Community Expo and Bite of Mason County took to the streets for a fabulous street fair style event. On July 21, the Shelton-Mason County Chamber of Commerce hosted dozens of local businesses and restaurants downtown making the most of the recent road diet’s pedestrian-friendly plans. Photo credit Shelton-Mason County Journal

The event had the feel of a high energy, block party with local businesses and community organizations drawing on showmanship and entertainment to get visitors’ attention while sharing what makes their business so dynamic. “We were thrilled to see such an amazing turnout from the community, especially for the first year in a new location – it’s such a wonderful way to discover the services available in Mason County,” says McCutcheon, “And, of course, the delicious bites our restaurants offer are too good to pass up!”

The brightly painted crosswalks and reduced traffic lanes provided a perfect backdrop for the event. The parking spaces along the south side of Railroad Ave were reinvented as booths and the side streets from Second to Fifth Street, between Railroad Ave and Cota St, were closed to vehicle traffic for even more booths to participate. The sidewalks were packed with residents, customers, and visitors who turned out in droves to see this new rendition of the ever-popular Expo.

With so many places to eat, play, and shop it’s no doubt that the people’s choice Golden Fork and Best Booth awards were a hot race. Best Booth Award went to Maple Glen Senior Living who leaned into summer and set-up picnic site themed booth, complete with campfire s’mores and patio furniture on a bright green (AstroTurf ) lawn. The Golden Fork this year went to Xinh’s Clam & Oyster House who served up her award winning Eggrolls and scrumptious Geoduck Chowder.

Chamber Member Spotlight

Changing Lives One Story at a Time

Quite often, many companies don’t have real opportunities to live up to their mission statements. The staff at Peninsula Credit Union (PCU) believes they are fortunate to see living that mission out daily – because every dollar they deposit to someone’s account (or provide to a member when they make a withdrawal) has a story behind it that enhances our community. CEO Jim Morrell says these stories are the very foundation of their organization. “A $1 bill for the tooth fairy, $5 to buy a child a snack or $10 for an allowance, a $20 or $50 bill to celebrate an anniversary dinner – these dollars add up to represent the hard work of our members,” he says. “When their payroll is deposited and then spent for monthly bills, school supplies, emergency medical bills, or car troubles… Everyone has a financial story and every dollar is a precious token which represents a chapter of a household’s story.” He goes on to share some of the stories that most caught his attention lately. One that he most vividly recalls was a member responding to a fraudulent caller posing as an IRS agent. She withdrew $3,000 to avoid what she believed was a warrant for her arrest. Luckily, Branch Manager Jennifer Owens (who also serves as the Chamber’s President of the Board) intervened by responding to the caller and walking the member across the street to the Shelton Police Department to file a report, saving the member the $3,000.

Valid through: June 2016

Another story begins with a young lady who had been referred by the Bank-On Mason program, which assists people who are unbanked or underbanked. PCU’s Member Relationship Consultant Kris Kord (and also the Chair of the Asset Building Coalition of Mason County) shared good news which brought the woman to tears when they opened her new checking account. Due to derogatory past history, she had not been able to have a checking account for a decade, forcing her to pay high fees. This was her opportunity to “hit the reset button on life.” He finished up with a story about PCU’s Member Relationship Consultant, Jackie Ross who retires this fall. She had a discussion with a couple about the deposits they already had at PCU and at several other institutions. She suggested they speak to Peninsula Wealth Management Financial

BIGHT Shelton Mason County Chamber

12

Advisor, Bryan Pettit, who helped educate the members about their options in preparing their estate for long term financial stability. WHICH MEANS WHAT?? Did they save more money, make more money, will be able to retire sooner?? The stories continue as every day, Peninsula Team Members go above and beyond a typical banking experience. These are just three examples of what Morrell calls ”wow moments” that his team sees happening every day. If those moments don’t add up to enough, PCU also recently received a $2 million grant to further their efforts in building financial resiliency in Mason County, being the only credit union in the Pacific Northwest and one of just 21 credit unions across the nation to receive this. Leveraging this grant means that PCU is able to provide additional opportunities for loans and finanical counseling, leading to more jobs being retained, more debts consolidated, and more first-time account holders in our community. As they begin to leverage these funds extending credit to many who have damaged credit scores, PCU has enabled some people to purchase a vehicle at interest rates 5%-15% lower than what their credit history would have been able to obtain. Often times a reliable vehicle is life changing, as it enables a person to drive to interviews, keep jobs, and more efficiently take care of their family. If you want to learn more about Peninsula Credit Union, stop by at their downtown Shelton Branch or call (800) 426-1601.

Countdown to the General Election has Begun Julie Nichols | Whitehouse & Nichols, LLP | Chamber Board Member

In just a few weeks, general election ballots will land in Mason County mailboxes. With two out of three county commission seats up for grabs, and both state house members seeking re-election, every vote will be critical in determining the local political landscape after November. Primary Election Voter turnout in Mason County was forty percent – and is predicted to be double that for the General Election. Mason County residents had the chance to watch the candidates (both in person and live streaming on MasonWebTV) speak on a variety of issues during a primary election candidate forum put on by the Chamber on July 19. Candidates for PUD No. 1 Commissioner, Karl Denison and J. Micheal Read, fielded questions about rate increases and opportunities for improvement (Mike Sheetz was unable to attend). Legislative candidates took questions on topics such as education funding and local capital projects. Candidates for the two county commission positions focused on budget issues, mental health, a potential metropolitan parks district, and economic development.

Griffey, MacEwen seek to stay in primary with nearly 54 percent of ballots cast to send him back to Olympia. Legislature The entirety of Mason County (as well as portions of Thurston and Kitsap Counties) is located within the 35th Legislative District, where IRENE BOWLING (D-Bremerton) is seeking to unseat incumbent Representative DAN GRIFFEY (R-Allyn). After Primary votes were counted in August, Griffey had 54 percent of the vote. For Position 2, CRAIG PATTI (D-Allyn) is challenging incumbent state Representative DREW MACEWEN (R-Union). Railroad goes on a Diet Many of you have noticed a big change to our downtown core, as main street Railroad Avenue is sporting a new look for a couple of blocks. Although the discussion has been in this magazine, online, on the radio, and in the papers, there are still many questions surrounding the changes. While it would be near impossible to address all of the questions, comments, and feedback received thus far, there are several questions which are more previlent than others. Downtown Visioning Committee co-chairs Melanie Bakala and Julie Nichols address some of them below.

Why is this happening all of a sudden?

Why don’t you fix the potholes before you worry about painting the streets?

This project is more than two years in the making and is a result of community members who gathered together for walking audits, roundtables, and meetings to discuss ideas vision for downtown Shelton’s future. Those ideas were put together to develop a vision plan which was shared with the community last fall. One of the outcomes of the plan recommended reducing the speeds through downtown Shelton to increase pedestrian activity and safety.

As paint fades over time, the city restripes roads regularly for both vehicle and pedestrian safety. This is budgeted as a separate line item from road repairs and repaving. When the community gathered to develop the vision for downtown, the will to explore a road diet on Railroad Avenue became clear. The City showed great forethought in their decision to postpone the 2015 plan to restripe to ensure that funds already designated were available for this new approach.

Are you trying to make it harder to get through Shelton?

What about the big logging trucks and buses?

The idea of the road diet is to slow traffic. We have all seen pedestrians have difficulty crossing the street, deterring people from spending time downtown at restaurants and shops. Statistically, slower speeds encourage drivers to take note of what is around them, making it more likely for them to stop, park, shop, and walk around. This project also restriped crosswalks to make it easier for motorists to see pedestrians.

In addition to the truck and bus drivers who particiapted in the community forums, representatives from Sierra Pacific and Mason Transit Authority have been active in the Downtown Visioning Advisory Group. Their input has been invaluable in coming up with a feasible plan and a couple of the phases of the test have been adjusted to ensure trucks and buses are accommodated.

Why did you only change two blocks?

Why is there back-in angle parking?

This road diet is to be tested for just one year. Instead of testing the whole of Railroad Avenue, it was determined to run the trial for just a couple blocks while gathering information and statistics before further (or permanent) implementation.

BIGHT Shelton Mason County Chamber

That seems difficult to do! Back-in angle parking provides drivers with better vision of bicyclists, pedestrians, and other vehicles as they exit a parking space and enter moving traffic. Cities that have tracked the safety aspect between pull-in and back-in angle parking have 16

What’s Happening Downtown?

noted a significant reduction in crashes after the back-in option is implemented. Additionally, angle parking increases the amount of available parking by nearly 20% compared to the former parallel parking option.

Are there going to be trees in the middle of the street? There will not be trees in the middle of the street. The initial vision plan provided examples of how our downtown might look based on the ideas generated by the community members who participated in the visioning process. There has also been special consideration to ensure the future of parades on Railroad Ave.

For more information on the road diet or other phases of the Downtown Visioning Project, you can go to www.facebook. com/sheltonvisioningproject, email visionplan@sheltonchamber.org, or call committee co-chair Melanie Bakala at (360) 789-7021.

Flower Baskets in Full Glory The lovely flower baskets that grace the streets of Shelton are still up – providing a sunny smile for locals and welcoming visitors to our community. Contributions made to the summer beautification efforts allow us to not only continue to promote a vibrant community, but also to honor those friends and family who shared our sense of love a nd pride in Shelton. You can help us reach this year’s goal! More than $15,000 has been donated but we need your help to raise the remaining $5,000. Gifts of any amount are appreciated! If you wish to sponsor a flower basket or make a memorial basket in honor a loved one, a gift of $225 offsets the cost of materials and maintenance for the season.

Financial contributions may be mailed to PO Box 2389, Shelton, WA 98584 and gifts of any amount are appreciated. For more information about this valuable community project, please visit sheltonchamber.org/beautification.

Free live music for all ages is ongoing with an over21 microbrew area and an all ages stage in the dessert tent. Professsor Bamboozle engages and entertains the younger crowd with hand’s on performances all weekend. Wine tasting is provided by nineteen Washington State wineries. Friends gather to visit with local vintners and sample the variety of over seventy wines. Purchase a souvenir glass for $5 and tasting tickets for just $1 each. Tickets are redeemable at any of the winery tables for a sample pouring. Attendees are also able to purchase bottles of their favorite wines along with great event souvenirs to take home.

Microbrews share the spotlight with great food at OysterFest. From a delicate herbed seafood ceviche to corn on the cob and, of course, oysters prepared in every way imaginable – and since no food vendor may duplicate another’s delicacy – you can be sure there’s something for every palate. Our advice – come hungry & thirsty! Skookum Rotary allows only other non-profit charitable organizations with proceeds benefiting the Mason County community to be a food vendor at OysterFest. By making this requirement, Skookum Rotary ensures that it is a fundraising event for other organizations as well. What a way to pay it forward! In addition, over $70,000 raised at the 2015 event by Skookum Roary was donated back to Mason County community by providing scholarships

($20,000), recognizing academic achievement, hosting the Mason County Science Fair, sponsoring water quality education programs, and many other local service works from food banks and homeless shelters to the annual Music in the Park concerts. In keeping with its mission to promote education and water quality OysterFest features exhibits that showcase the beauty

and delicacy of the Puget Sound ecosystem. Attendees learn about the tidal zones and how to protect and enjoy our local waters. The marine touch tanks especially are a perennial favorite. With creatures carefully gathered by divers in Hood Canal and South Puget Sound exclusively for these exhibits, the ecosystem in the touch tanks is as close to mother nature as you can get without actually being there. In addition to the touch tanks there are exhibits on aquaculture, education, water quality, natural resources, and public safety. The Pacific Coast Shellfish Growers Association illustrates a spectrum of issues in their booth including environmental protection, shellfish safety, regulations and provide public information materials and answer questions. The Mason County Noxious Weed exhibit educates the public and offers advice on which native plants can help home owners protect their waterways. The Mason Conservation District provides a link between landowners, industry, and government agencies presenting technical

and financial assistance to residents willing to implement conservation best management practices. Also onsite with information is the Washington State Department of Health Shellfish Program. Their mission is to educate and prevent illness in people who eat shellfish. The Mason County PUD# 3 also provides an educational display at OysterFest. Stop by their booth for helpful hints to reduce energy use and be safe around electricity. Be sure to check out all the exhibitors and their locations in the map available at the ticket and information booths or view the list online. OysterFest is located on Sanderson Field, 1/2 mile north of Shelton, directly off US Hwy 101. Located at the airport, there is plenty of parking as well as weekend camping opportunities. Locals know that the best way to get to OysterFest is through the free Shuttle Service. Free parking areas and pick-up points are located at the Shelton Civic Center, Shelton Yacht Club, Olympic College and Shelton High School. Signage is evident throughout town for the closest shuttle spot for you.

The cost of admission to OysterFest is $5.00 per-person; children under 6 are free. Sunday is Family Day with kids 13 and under free. There is no charge to park and no charge to ride the shuttle bus. Except for service dogs, dogs are not permitted at the event. Maps, tickets, RV reservations, entertainment schedules, and more are available at oysterfest.org.

Learning Structure at the Heart of School Bond

The Shelton School District Board of Directors recently announced the District will run a school construction bond, as well as a replacement levy (which is run every three years) on the February 14, 2017 ballot. To begin the planning process for the construction bond, a study and a survey has been completed to analyze the District’s facilities, educational programs and plans, student population projections, capital finance and operating capabilities, and the needs for new construction, modernization or replacement of facilities. In addition, a citizen’s advisory committee met over the past few months to discuss the District’s needs. Along with this, advisory committees were also formulated at each school, with community meetings being held on an ongoing basis to help develop the plan for the bond. The resulting work of those committees has brought forth specific changes to the instructional model based on grade formation. While previously, grade levels were moved around from building to building based on capacity, this bond will allow for students to be organized by the best learning structure. Should the bond be approved by voters in February, the build out for Shelton Schools will allow for Pre-K to 4th Grade at Bordeaux, Evergreen and Mt. View Elementary Schools, 5th to 6th Grade at Olympic Middle School, 7th to 8th Grade at Oakland Bay Junior High, and a return to a 9th to 12th Grade High School. Studies show that 9th grade is the most important year of high school, often determining whether a student will move 20

on or drop out of school. According to Education journal, 9th Graders have the lowest grade point average, the most missed classes, the majority of failing grades, and more misbehavior referrals than any other high-school grade level. To return Shelton High School to traditional four-year campus will help alleviate some of these statistics. As a result of the work of these committees, the Shelton School District will be asking voters to approve a bond amount of nearly $65 million. While this sounds like an exorbitant amount, the tax implications would be a cost of only $180 annually for a home that is valued at $100,000. This will allow for changes and updates to each of the seven schools within the Shelton School District. MasonWebTV.com reported the summaries of the proposed work as: SHELTON HIGH SCHOOL – $29,539,975 – 26 new classrooms in a new 41,850 square foot two-story building at the front of the school, a new auxiliary gym just west of the pool, ADA upgrades, and technology and safety upgrades to the campus as well as replacing roofs and windows. MOUNTAIN VIEW ELEMENTARY – $24,501,882 – a new 45,000 square foot school (with technology and safety upgrades), modernization of the Octagonal Building (preschool) and new play fields.

CHOICE HIGH SCHOOL – $1,220,341 – new classroom at auditorium stage; ADA access at front entrance; replace roofing; demolish old existing block building; technology and safety improvements. OAKLAND BAY JUNIOR HIGH – $2,466,464 – ADA entrance at south entrance; paint interior and exterior; replace boilers and hot water tanks; mold remediation at windows; technology and safety improvements. OLYMPIC MIDDLE SCHOOL – $1,658,630 – repair and/or replace roofing; technology and safety improvements. EVERGREEN ELEMENTARY – $1,476,272 – replace two portables; reside and painting remaining portables; technology and safety improvements. BORDEAUX ELEMENTARY – $1,090,701 – covered landings and walkways for portables; replace boilers; technology and safety improvements.

WHERE BUSINESS CONNECTS.

There are other District-wide improvements in the plan that will be contingent on remaining funding after the building improvements are completed and include Highclimber Stadium – replace the track and light boxes; structural evaluation; Shelton Pool – new unisex restroom/ changing area; ADA upgrades; resurface pool deck; Transportation & Maintenance – demolish old buildings to create new parking; paint exterior of main building; replace heat pumps; repaving; and the Childcare Center – provide new portable with playground.

Chamber Renews Partnership in Small Business Saturday Coalition

First came Black Friday. Then it was Cyber Monday. Now let’s shop Small Business Saturday! November 26 marks 2016 Small Business Saturday and is the day we celebrate the Shop Small movement, drive shoppers to local merchants, and help fuel the local economy by shopping local. When we all shop small, it will be huge. Created by American Express in 2010, Small Business Saturday serves as the ceremonial kickoff to the holiday shopping season for small businesses across the United States. In 2015, more than 4,000 Neighborhood Champions rallied local businesses and created events and activities to drive shopping at small businesses around the country. As a result, consumers aware of Small Business Saturday spent a

total of $16.2 billion with independent merchants on Small Business Saturday and more than 95 million consumers shopped at small businesses on Small Business Saturday. The Chamber recognizes the importance of supporting small businesses in Mason County, the jobs they help create, and the culture they instill in local communities.

Top 10 reasons to Shop Local: 1. Support yourself by supporting local business: When you buy from a locally owned business more of your money stays in your community. 2. Support community groups: Non-profit organizations receive an average 250% more support from smaller business owners than large businesses. 3. Keep our community unique: One-of-a-kind businesses are the character of a place. 4. Reduce environmental impact: Locally owned businesses can buy local with less transportation expenses and environmental impact.

5. Create more good jobs: Small businesses are the largest employer nationally and in our community, provide the most jobs to residents. 6. Better service: Local businesses often hire people who take time to get to know customers. 7. Invest in community: Local businesses owned by people who live in the community, are less likely to leave, and are more invested in the community. 8. Put your taxes to good use: Local businesses make more efficient use of public services as compared to nationally owned stores entering the community.

According to the U.S. Small Businesses Administration, small businesses nationwide accounted for 55% of all jobs and 66% of net new jobs since the 1970s. To see a list of participating businesses and get involved, visit shopsmall.com and “like” the Small Business Saturday page at facebook.com/shopsmall.

9. Buy what you want, not what someone wants you to buy: A marketplace of tens of thousands of small businesses is the best way to ensure innovation and low prices over the long-term. 10. Encourage local prosperity: Research shows that in an increasingly homogenized world, entrepreneurs and skilled workers are more likely to invest and settle in communities that preserve their one-of-a-kind businesses and distinctive character.
