SHELTONMASONCOUNTY
2016 BOARD OF TRUSTEES
The past two months have been conference season for me, as I’ve attended three. While, on one hand, I feel that I’m not able to get any “real work” done, on the other hand I feel encouraged by all that the Chamber is doing well and for the inspiration of how to do things better. In early November, we were off to the Washington Chamber of Commerce Executives conference at Lake Chelan. This conference was largely aimed toward the changing business climate in our state. The status of an exempt vs. non-exempt employee has greatly changed; the most startling being that for an exempt salaried employee to not have to clock his or her hours, the annual salary jumps from just over $23,000 a year to nearly $48,000. One colleague shared that she fears she will lose an employee who feels he has been demoted. He told her, “I feel like I have just been asked to sit at the kid’s table at Christmas.” Another item that was discussed at length is the recently approved Initiative 1433 that not only raises the minimum wage but also institutes predictive scheduling and mandatory paid time off. Predictive scheduling requires businesses to schedule their employees two weeks in advance. Another colleague shared that his family owns a small farm that employs three peoples. He said that when an employee calls out sick, he then has to call in another whom is
then guaranteed time and a half pay. “While this has happened in the past, I wasn’t penalized for having to call someone else in. I can’t predict situations like this.” While Initiative 1433 is just one reason for business owners to wonder how they will make ends meet, I’ve also had many businesses report that October was an extremely slow month in Mason County with some saying they were down as much as 50%. Many things can be attributed to this, such as it being the wettest October in history, but that doesn’t go a long way toward alleviating business owner’s fears. Our community can help. You personally can help. Go out to dinner one night this month. Purchase something from a local retailer. Studies show that small businesses are 250% more likely than their counterparts to support their community. If you look at our Business of the Year nominees on page 5, you can see this to be true. Every one of them donates time, money, supplies, and discounts to a number of other community organizations. I feel that we have an obligation
PRESIDENT
Jennifer Owens Peninsula Credit Union
to support organizations that, in turn, support our residents. A common argument is that it is more costly to shop local. I’ve found that generally this isn’t true and when it is, our local businesses offer a price match to remain competitive whenever possible. Sometimes it isn’t possible. When this happens, I have a simple rule of thumb I follow: if it doesn’t cost more than 10% more, I get it in Mason County. In addition to the jobs that our small businesses supply to our community, shopping locally also increases our tax base, giving the city and the county more money to fix roads, maintain our parks, and provide other needed services. Our community has shown time and time again that together we can make a huge difference. From building the first community college in the state with more private dollars than taxpayer money, to Kneeland Park’s play structures, to raising close to $500,000 to save the pool in a few short months - we do great things together. I hope you’ll join me and show our businesses some love, especially as they try to charter these unknown waters.

Leading the Way
Jennifer Owens | 2016 Chamber Board President Branch Manager, Peninsula Credit Union Shelton
As we wind down this year, I can’t help but reflect on how much has taken place. As the Chamber Board president, I have had the pleasure of working with wonderful individuals and together we have achieved some lofty goals. Each month the staff has met with at least ten members to ensure an open dialogue about programs and the current business climate. We have also actively engaged in local schools through such programs as the Mason County Education Partnership at Olympic Middle School and Hood Canal’s Lemonade Day. Our success is due, in large part, to the vision and dedication displayed by our diverse Board of Trustees. I am grateful for the leadership and energy that past presidents Brian Kelly of Miles Sand & Gravel and Kelley Crabtree of Maple Glen Senior Living have provided over the past three years. While Kelley and Brian are wrapping up their board terms, Justin Baze of Black Star, Lisa Perry of Sierra Pacific Industries, Michelle Schreiber of Verles LLC, Jeff Selby of Awnaroll Painting, and Wes Taylor of Taylor Shellfish remain. Making up the 2017 slate are John Lester of the SheltonMason County Journal, Jan Morris of The Hardware Distillery Co., Julie Nichols of Whitehouse & Nichols, LLP, and Karen Schade, Edward Jones Investments who have consented to serve another term.
Joining the slate as first time Chamber Board members are Marty Crow of Habitat for Humanity, Ray Frederick of Garage Sale Maniacs, and Mark West of Little Creek Casino Resort, who will undoubtedly be valuable additions to the roster. Marty Crow is the Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity of Mason County. A long time resident and graduate of Shelton High School, Marty was brought onboard at Habitat in mid-2015. Marty has had a long career, holding various CFO positions, and worked for years at Simpson Lumber Company. Marty and his wife Michele have a daughter named Madison who also graduated from Shelton High. Ray Frederick and his wife Kerri own Garage Sale Maniacs in downtown Shelton. The second hand and antiques store
holds treasures of all types from furniture and jewelry to tools and books. Before opening Garage Sale Maniacs, Ray retired as a pastor where he served in some of Seattle & Olympia’s largest churches. As the economy took a turn, he and Kerri decided to leave the hustle of the big city and moved permanently to their summer home on Hammersley Inlet, beginning their long term venture in Mason County. The business opened nearly seven years ago in a single building which has grown to three, anchoring a revitalized stretch of Cota Street. Mark West, CEO of Little Creek Casino Resort (LCCR), has been working for the Squaxin Island Tribe for fourteen years. He began as an IT Technician and worked his way up to Assistant General Manager through a competitive mentorship program.
He has served LCCR as Interim CEO four times in recent years and in September 2015 he was named as CEO outright. When Mark isn’t ensuring that the casino is running smoothly, he likes to get his hands dirty gardening and doing yard work at his home. While my role next year will change to make way for new leadership, I look forward to seeing how we progress from here. The Chamber Board is charged with overseeing all of the affairs of the association: creating the vision, setting goals, and policy. We do so with a responsibility to our members, as well as the community at large, and it is both humbling and rewarding. Thank you for your confidence and feedback over the last year. I look forward to celebrating this year’s success at the January 20 Awards Gala. Cheers!

Chamber Announces 2016 Award Nominees Mason County has a wealth of exceptional citizens, committed businesses and dedicated volunteers working to making it a better place to live, work and play. The Chamber proudly honors a few of these communityminded people and businesses for their tireless efforts and endless hours. Let’s hear it for our nominees!
BUSINESS OF THE YEAR NOMINEES
Business of the Year recognize the company that made the most significant contribution benefiting the Mason County business community. Any size business is eligible; recognition is given for overall contributions to improving our community and/or business climate. This year’s nominees are Alderbrook Resort & Spa, Nifty Thrifty Store, and Shelton Cinemas. ALDERBROOK RESORT & SPA is a first-class, internationally acclaimed resort tucked into the trees along the shore of Hood Canal in Union. After more than one hundred years, the resort has become known not only for its incredible rooms, stellar service, and fine dining but also for its commitment to the local community. Alderbrook plays host to unique local gatherings such as Thunder on the Canal and Summer’s End Party which it opens to its neighbors as well as to its guests. In addition to its generous donations and sponsorship of numerous non-profits—from Meals on Wheels and the Hospital’s Foundation to 4-H and Hood Canal

School, Alderbrook also boasts sustainable, eco-friendly practices and showcases the area’s small businesses, products, and excursions. Their nomination read “it’s especially admirable that while this business has proved they are truly deserving of state wide recognition, they still that they embrace and appreciate being a part of our small community.”
its just this year: clothing and housewares were provided to survivors of domestic violence in partnership with Turning Pointe; warm coats and essential garments were given to Community Lifeline and to individual needy persons; professional apparel as offered to job seekers at WorkSource; and the store participated in the Back to School Jamboree.

They have hosted sing-along special features and offered “Free Movie Mondays” for children in the summer, shown holiday films at Halloween Spooktacular and Holiday Magic, while collecting no admission besides non-perishables for the local food bank, and they have donated to countless auctions, benefits, and organizations—Relay For Life, Sound Learning, and Kiwanis, to name a few. CITIZEN OF THE YEAR NOMINEES
Citizen of the Year honors individuals who made outstanding contributions to enhance the business community and the community at large and who have given freely of their time, talent, energy and expertise. Amy Cooper of Cooper Studios, Xinh Dwelley of Xinh’s Clam & Oyster House, and Kevin Schmelzlen of Shelton to the Top are on the ballot this year. AMY COOPER moved to Mason County with her college sweetheart Forrest and opened Cooper Studios in 2009. Quickly building the business and her reputation within the community, Amy has generously lent her talents and creativity to several organizations. In her role with Shelton Downtown Merchants she co-coordinates Holiday Magic with the Kristmas Town Kiwanis Club and this year she was instrumental in developing Halloween Spooktacular—an event partnership between Downtown Merchants, the Journal, and an enthusiastic group of local residents and businesses. Amy also donates her time to the Forest Festival Association Board, the City of Shelton Arts Commission, the Shelton High School CTE Advisory Board, and the Chamber’s Downtown Visioning Committee. “Amy’s passion, generosity, and enthusiasm for Mason County are undeniable. She dives in to any effort that needs her and that, in itself, is awe inspiring.”
XINH DWELLEY began her culinary
journey as a teenager picking up odd jobs at a US Army mess hall. In 1970, she landed a job as an oyster shucker with Taylor Shellfish who helped her open her own Asian fusion restaurant featuring local shellfish in 1996. Xinh’s Clam & Oyster House became one of the first regionally recognized restauBIGHT Shelton Mason County Chamber
rants—paving the way for others. Xinh donates her food, time, and talent to countless civic groups and non-profits. Even as she made plans this year to close the restaurant, she continues to commit to benefits and special events which will take place after the restaurant closes. She also saves money all year long so that she may purchase food and supplies for a leper colony near her hometown in southern Vietnam. “Her life and career serve as an example of what is right about this country… the possibilities, the potential, and the success that can be attained with true passion and an incredible work ethic.”
KEVIN SCHMELZLEN is
receiving a nod for his innovative approach to creating safe, clean spaces. Coming to Mason County with a Political Science degree from UC Irvine and nearly a decade of experience in volunteer coordination, Kevin wasted no time in applying his talent to this community. His movement “Shelton to the Top” began earlier in the year as a means to provide residents with a sense of ownership and community pride by cleaning up abandoned or dump properties. After early projects gained momentum, Kevin partnered with United Way of Mason County for its Day of Caring to complete significant and visible property clean-ups in local neighborhoods. His nominator said “It is clear that Kevin has a knack for bringing people together. He blends that with his passion for the environment in a way that is astonishing.”
VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR NOMINEES
Volunteer of the Year nominees are recognized for their contributions to the Chamber’s programs and activities. These wonderful people have given their time, talents, energies, and expertise to enhance the business community and the community at large. This year’s nominees are Stephanie Boysen of Bella Acres, Dan Cooling of Anchor Bank, and Lloyd Mullen formerly of the Shelton-Mason County Journal. 6
STEPHANIE BOYSEN opened event venue Bella Acres after spending years as an emergency services volunteer, active parent, and a successful business venturist. As a Chamber Ambassador, Stephanie volunteers to assist new businesses as they join the Chamber and serves as the welcoming committee and cheerleader for nearly every event. With a busy calendar of her own, Stephanie never hesitates to lend a helping hand when asked. She frequently offers her time, know-how, and equipment for everything from event staging to collecting flower baskets at the end of the Chamber’s summer beautification program. “Her kind heart and humble nature make her an approachable ambassador, a strong volunteer, and generous entrepreneur.”
DAN COOLING came to Shelton’s
Anchor Bank in 2014 where he serves as the branch manager after beginning his career in sales. The zeal with which Dan approaches his work, continuing education, and leadership training “gives him a fresh, positive perspective. He is a constant source of encouragement and vision to his team and his professional network.” Dan is member of the Chamber’s Member Services Committee, where he has been active in the Lemonade Day program at Hood Canal School and has become a proponent for expanding educational partnerships. He also serves as the president of United Way of Mason County and volunteers with Crossroads Housing and Skookum Rotary Club.
LLOYD MULLEN, a transplant to Mason
County, quickly embraced the community. Lloyd worked diligently in his capacity as manager of the Journal to connect with community’s businesses and non-profits. He served on the Chamber’s Ambassadors Committee onboarding new members and

was a key member of the planning committee for the 2016 Business Expo & Bite of Mason County. Lloyd also served as a board member of the Olympic College Foundation, promoting the higher education institution throughout the region. “His desire to help businesses and people thrive is clear and his talent is matched only by his good humor.”
The Chamber is grateful for the numerous nominations submitted by the community for this year’s awards. As has become tradition, ballots will be mailed to all Chamber members in good standing along with the Board of Trustees slate. Winners will be announced at the Annual Awards Gala to be held on January 20 at Little Creek Casino Resort beginning at 6:00 PM. More than 300 guests gather each year for this brilliant celebration of the individuals and businesses that support the Chamber and Mason County. The semi-formal event includes a cocktail hour, a four course meal expertly paired with wines, the installation of the next year’s Chamber Board of Trustees, an annual year in review, and the announcement of the annual award winners. The ticket price is $95 per person and VIP tables of eight may be reserved for $1,000. Downtown Shelton is ‘LED’ on a new path of energy
PUD#3 is partnering with the Shelton-Mason County Chamber of Commerce, the City of Shelton, and Shelton and Kristmas Town Kiwanis Clubs to provide LED bulbs for the centerpiece of the vintage Christmas decorations that hang along Railroad Ave throughout the holiday season. LED is a highly energy efficient lighting technology, and has the potential to fundamentally change the future of lighting in the United States. Residential LEDs use at least 75% less energy, and last 25 times longer, than incandescent lighting –
2
that means you can have 4X the number of lights for the same amount of energy by selecting LED lights over the old style incandescent Christmas lights! Use of LED lighting has the greatest potential impact on energy savings in the United States. By 2027, widespread use of LEDs could save the equivalent annual electrical output of 44 large electric power plants, and a total savings of more than $30 billion at today’s electricity prices. In addition to maintenance costs, the groups can look forward to saving about $125 in energy over the Christmas season. These LED lights will use about 1,500 kWhs less power- that’s about the same as the average home’s monthly usage.
Justin Holzgrove, PUD#3, and Heidi McCutcheon, Shelton-Mason Chamber of Commerce, hold new LED bulbs that will provide energy savings for the downtown Shelton Christmas display.
Be sure to stop by the giant Christmas tree in Post Office Park, Shelton, this Christmas season to see how bright the Season is downtown when it is #PoweredByPUD3. This year plan on using a few of PUD#3’s energy saving holiday “Ways” (next page). Visit PUD3.org for even more great ideas to save energy this holiday season!

Remember, when family and friends come to stay they’ll add to your energy use. More showers, more laundry, using lights late into the night, and more fun.

Election Update
Julie Nichols | Chamber Board Member Whitehouse & Nichols, LLP
While some Election Nights in recent years have come and gone leaving voters with local races that are “too close to call,” November 9, 2016 delivered decisive victories for fiscally conservative candidates.
Valid through: June 2016
COUNTY COMMISSION
OTHER MEASURES & RACES
Two seats were up for grabs on the Mason County Commission. Republican political newcomer Kevin Shutty and repeat Democratic candidate Roslynne Reed mounted campaigns to fill the open seat being vacated in January by longtime Commissioner and State Senator Tim Sheldon. In the end, Shutty came out ahead of Reed, 54% to 46%. In Commission District 1, Independent incumbent Randy Neatherlin defeated Democrat Kelley McIntosh by nearly an identical margin, 55% to 45%.
Sixty-five percent (65%) of Mason County voters rejected Proposition 1, which would have created a Metropolitan Parks District and introduced a new tax of $0.20 per $1,000 in assessed value for property owners.
35TH LEGISLATIVE DISTRICT
The populist, anti-tax voting patterns in Mason County’s results were also seen in neighboring counties. Grays Harbor will see two independents and one Republican on its county commission, marking the first time in 80 years that no Democrat on will serve on the Commission.
Incumbent Republican Representatives Drew MacEwen and Dan Griffey found themselves on early target lists of Democratic leaders seeking to keep the House of Representatives safely in Democratic control. Nearly $200,000 poured into the 35th Legislative District in independent expenditures opposing MacEwen and Griffey, but both Republicans won decisive victories. Griffey defeated Democratic challenger Irene Bowling with over 55% of the vote and MacEwen defeated Democratic challenger Craig Patti with nearly 55% of the vote.
In Thurston County, Independent John (Hutch) Hutchings beat Democrat Jim Cooper 52% - 48% and former Sheriff Gary Edwards handily defeated Democrat Kelsey Hulse, 54% - 46%, with late ballots trending heavily against the Democratic candidates in both races. They join sitting Commissioner Bud Blake, also an Independent. Another telling signal about voters’ unwillingness to entertain new taxes: Nearly 54% of voters in left-leaning City of Olympia rejected an income-tax-to-fundcollege measure. Mason County was one of 27 Washington counties that voted for Donald Trump. Trump carried Mason County 49% while Hillary Clinton garnered just 43%.

As comedian Dave Hill says, “Golf is the hardest game in the world to play and the easiest to cheat at.” Our licorice rope and other purchasable advantages made it a little easier for participants to uphold their moral character on the course. After eighteen holes (avoiding Sand Trap Sponsor Miles Sand & Gravel when possible!) the fierce competition wrapped up with a silent auction and awards banquet. An array of high-end golf clubs, accessories, and prizes were awarded to the top teams. First place this year went to Team Edward Jones–Eric Thompson, Erin Johnsrud, Shaun Carson, and John Cady; the Alderbrook Resort Team–Shaun Tucker, Justin Gravatt, Jake Geist, and Mike Endicott–took second; and rounding out the winners was Team Maple Glen Senior Living – Bruce Lund, Niels Lund, Alvaro Lopez, and Greg Harvey. KP went to Rick Endicott and Ruth Whitener, Longest Drives were made by Jay Colard and Erin Johnsrud, and Wes Taylor and Ruth Whitener took Closest to the Line.
We would like to extend our sincere appreciation to this year’s golf tournament committee: John Lester, Jennifer Owens, Karen Schade and staff Heidi McCutcheon and Deidre Eaton. They all worked diligently with our members to ensure this year’s tournament was a memorable and valuable event. Thank you!

Vote Yes for SSD
The Shelton-Mason County Chamber of Commerce has long been a supporter of strong schools in our community. The business community recognizes the importance of high performing schools in attracting new employers as well as in hiring and retaining great employees. Competitive schools are critical to us. The Chamber is pleased to support the Shelton School District (SSD) replacement levy and the construction bond. While school construction is expensive, we believe that this is the best solution for our children as it allows SSD to reorganize the educational structure. Our professional educators believe, and research shows, that this is the best way to ensure quality education. The reconfiguration of the grade levels to Pre-K to 4th Grade, 5th & 6th, 7th & 8th and a return to a 9th – 12th high school best supports the educational model.
While the past grade structures seemed to look solely on how to make the buildings best fit the students, the Shelton School District has gone to great lengths to ensure that the students’ educational needs were of the utmost priority.

Member Spotlight: MAPLE GLEN SENIOR LIVING Surrounded by the dramatic scenery of Mason County—hills, rivers, lakes, green valleys and thick forests—is Maple Glen Senior Living. Its quiet neighborhood is close to parks and shopping and boasts quality Assisted Living. The environment is a great place to take part exercise and wellness events, enjoy live entertainment, or the quiet solitude of the library. Maple Glen offers 54 studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments designed with their residents’ comfort in mind. Each has a kitchenette, large private bathroom with roll-in shower, and state-of-the-art emergency call system. While Maple Glen has offered quality living since it opened in 2005, there has been reorganization of its staff of late. Kelley Crabtree, the executive director for the past 15 years, was recently promoted to Regional Director of Operations for Artegan, the company that has managed Maple Glen since day one. As such, she now spends less time in the office as her
role has expanded to support neighboring assisted living centers. She is now manager for Maple Glen as well as three sister properties located in Normandy Park, Maple Valley, and Washougal. As Kelley takes on a regional role, it left a hole in the local management of Maple Glen. Monica Decicio, a Maple Glen employee for the past 15 years who most recently served as Resident Services Director, has been promoted to executive director. Her experience, knowledge, and understanding of the role ensured a smooth transition for the organization and for staff. She and the entire team look forward to continuing the tradition of Maple Glen Senior Living Center within the Mason County community as they focus on Celebrating the ART of Life.

Lights, Camera, Action! Have you ever wondered what happens to the beautiful flower baskets that grace our streets during the summer months? When Hood Canal Communications donates employee time to take the baskets down, the Kristmas Town and Shelton Kiwanis clubs are standing by to load them up onto trailers with help from the City of Shelton Public Works Department, and transport them to the Port of Shelton to dry out in donated space. After at least a month, the Chamber’s staff and volunteers gather to take empty the baskets and make preparations for winter storage. This year, nearly a full dump trailer load of flower basket stuffing was taken to a local landscaping supply and the baskets were carefully stacked and stored. So what’s next? Trusty volunteers Hood Canal Communications hang the Christmas decorations the week after Thanksgiving – just in time for our town’s holiday happenings.
Again Kiwanians prepped and transported the décor for hanging; checking the wiring and installing the new LED light bulbs (provided by the Mason County PUD#3) into the lamppost centerpieces. Though these decorations don’t look too large from the ground level, each stands a full eight feet tall! The Chamber’s Beautification Project is supported not only by these volunteers, but also businesses and individuals like yourself who give donations

If you still do not have health insurance through Washington Healthplanfinder, sign up now, during the three-month open enrollment period now through January 30, 2017. If you need to sign-up on a Saturday, you can attend one of two enrollment workshops at Mason General Hospital before the cut-off date. The Saturday workshops are on January 21 and 28 from 8:00 AM - 1:00 PM in the Ellinor Meeting Room at MGH and are free and open to anyone in the community who needs health care coverage. Safe Exchange Zone
The City of Shelton has become the latest city to offer a safe place for exchanges for items purchased through Craigslist or similar online sales. Commissioner Tracy Moore recently approached city staff regarding this latest crime prevention tool and its feasibility in Shelton. After some research by city staff it moved forward and was unveiled in August. The area is a parking space with designated signage in the gravel parking lot near the Shelton Police Department. Through cooperation with the city's Public Works Department, Shelton PD, and MACECOM, the space was marked and reserved for exchanges. The area is under unrecorded video surveillance through MACECOM dispatch center. The parking space is also near the police department parking lot with officers coming and going regularly. The area is not staffed by police officers so residents are still encouraged to practice safety when meeting someone they do not know. If a person is unwilling to meet in the police department lot to make the sale, be suspicious.
