2014 BOARD OF TRUSTEES
I was born and raised in Shelton. When I turned 18, I couldn’t get out of here fast enough. And then I grew up and couldn’t wait to come home. My husband and I moved back to Shelton in 2009 and we have lived here happily since that time. I have friends from Seattle, Portland and Lacey who want to know, “Why in the heck would you move back to Shelton?!” Actually, it’s for many reasons: the natural beauty, the proximity of both the busy city and stark wilderness, but mostly, it’s because of the quality of the people. People who care and people who want to make a difference. I’m happy to share with you two great examples that have taken place in the last month. We support each other. On Tuesday, March 11, Maple Glen Senior Living had an early morning fire in their kitchen. Shelton School District came through in a flash with two school buses to drive all the residents (the little old ladies were ecstatic to be carried down the stairs by Central Mason Fire & EMS) to their competitor, Alpine Way Continuing Care Community, who willingly and graciously served breakfast and lunch while the damage was cleaned up. Meanwhile, Mason County PUD#3 heard about it and asked, “Who’s going to transport all those walkers and wheelchairs?” and sent down a truck to transport. It is the kind of thing you don’t typically see in the big city. We also come together for our neighbors, whom we don’t necessarily know personally. With the volunteer help of our community and many of our local businesses, we sent a trailer full of goods and $2,000 in cash & gift cards to the workers of the Oso Mudslide – after just four hours of gathering donations on March 29 at ProBuild. Jeff Selby of Awnaroll Painting brought down his enclosed trailer to be filled. He and his daughter delivered all the goods the following morning. Lisa Brengan (Mason County Fire Dist. 4) and Brad McCutcheon (Olympia Sheet Metal) donated their time to accept the donations. Nifty Thrifty and

Treasures Thrift Stores donated several bags of items, including socks, towels and camo gear, as did Verle’s Sporting Goods. Angela & John Clements (Hood Canal School and Mason PUD#3, respectively) donated $300 of Walmart gift cards and Appliance Repair Plus donated $500 of gas gift cards. Then, Rosie & Mike Bottai (Greater Success LLC) dropped off a bag full of Nutrié energy drinks & protein bars and Black Star Printing brought a big box of construction orange shirts & vests. Aren’t these stories amazing? It is what makes me so proud to be from and live in Mason County. Many of these businesses attend our annual Business Expo & Bite of Mason County. If you are unsure of what the “business expo” is, simply put, it is a showcase of area businesses. There are prizes, games and raffles throughout the day and it is an opportunity for community members (that’s you!) to see what our businesses have to offer. From our “retail alley” to the food court (typically about a dozen restaurants attend), the service providers to the nonprofit organizations, they are all under one roof for one day. So, save the date of Thursday, July 17 and come to the Shelton High School Minidome. You’ll be impressed to know: it’s FREE to attend! If you have a story to share with me about a business or a person who is making a difference in our community, I’d love to hear it. So often we hear the bad things and forget to talk about what makes Mason County such an incredible place to live, work and play.

Chamber advocates for business and community growth Brian Kelly | Operations Manager, Miles Sand & Gravel 2014 President of the Chamber Board
As I prepared for my year as president of the Chamber Board, I met with past presidents, talked with fellow members, and planned with the new Board of Trustees. Throughout all of those conversations, one thing was clear: in order to affect change – for the benefit of our members and the community at large – the Chamber must take an active role in local government. In just the past few months, we have weighed in on critical issues: The Chamber supported the Shelton School District’s replacement levy, recognizing the importance of high performing schools in attracting new employers as well as in hiring and keeping great employees. Meanwhile, we are reviewing the pending reconfiguration plans. During the Legislative Session, members of the Government Affairs Committee joined in meetings with Rep. Kathy Haigh (D-Shelton), Rep. Drew MacEwen (R-Union), and Sen. Tim Sheldon (D-Potlach). We reviewed the proposed bills – including a $15 minimum wage – and reemphasized the Chamber’s priorities: do no harm to business, focus State government before asking for revenue, address workers compensation reform, protect resource industries, and prioritize the Belfair By-Pass project (see full report on page 10).
Another hot topic is the Shelton Hills project, planned for the site on the west side of US Hwy 101 North at Wallace-Kneeland Blvd. The Chamber has officially supported this development since 2010 when the Board agreed with Hall Equities’ position that “Shelton is an attractive community for development with a unique mix of proximity to a variety of amenities from population centers to recreation opportunities.” We continue to appreciate their efforts to work with state and local agencies and adjacent landowners to negotiate creative and equitable solutions for the many challenges that are presented in a large multi-use development. Currently, the City is deliberating over three options for water system infrastructure improvement. The outcome will drastically affect both businesses and residents within City limits. I am hopeful that the Commissioners will keep in mind the Chamber’s concerns about taking on an inordinate $6.9M loan
Brian Kelly | Miles Sand & Gravel and that they will conclude that option 2 is the best decision. Option 2 will make steps forward and take advantage of low interest loans without creating unnecessary risk and uncertainty for the city’s taxpayers. If you would like additional information on this, I encourage you to call the Chamber office or City Commissioners. As we all know, the economy in Mason County is still struggling to limp back to life from the 2008 recession. Every decision made by policy makers affects the potential economic progress here. I, along with the Chamber Board and staff, will continue to engage in open dialogue with our elected officials in hopes that together we can build a stronger community.

Chamber to hold golf socials throughout the summer Heidi McCutcheon | Chamber Director
I had a great childhood, growing up near Shelton High School. It was the perfect setting to play, and throughout our childhood, my brother and I were told to “go outside and don’t come home until it’s dark.” That mantra is now ingrained into me and it almost seems wrong to go inside before the sun sets. Especially in the summer months, I yearn to be outside. I’ve found that playing golf is a great excuse to get some fresh air and it gives me a sense of purpose to be outdoors. Because of that, I’m excited to announce the Chamber is hosting our first ever golf socials on Monday afternoons at Alderbrook Golf Course throughout the summer. Beginning on Monday, June 2, Chamber members and Friends of the Chamber (see page 13) can hit the greens for just $60 a month or $200 for the four month season. Tee time is at 5:00 PM and teams will consist of two players.

Shopping, Restaurants, Businesses & Prizes on July 17 Stop by the Shelton High School Minidome on July 17 to try local fare from an assortment of local restaurants, shop at a number of local retailers, and visit with neighboring business people all under the same roof! The Chamber is proud to host the 14th annual Business Expo & Bite of Mason County – connecting our businesses with our community. This event has the feel of a high energy block party with both businesses and community organizations drawing on showmanship and flair to get the attention of visitors, while sharing what makes their business so dynamic. The Expo is the largest business event in Mason County, which was attended by nearly 3,500 members of the public in 2013. “We hope to see another amazing turnout from the community. It’s such a wonderful way to discover the services available in Mason County. And between the shopping opportunities and the delicious bites our restaurants offer, it’s just too good to pass up!” says Chamber director Heidi McCutcheon.
As always, the community is called to vote for their favorites to receive the coveted “Golden Fork” and “Best Booth” awards. Last year’s top honors went to Smoking Mo’s and Hood Canal Communications, respectively. The 2014 Business Expo & Bite of Shelton will be held Thursday, July 17 at the SHS Minidome from 11:00 AM – 6:00 PM. Stop by to experience the wide array of interactive games, giveaways and drawings; admission and parking are free to the public. The familiar songs cover a period from roughly the turn of the 20th century to the 1960’s. In a little more than 50 years, Americans experienced, two world wars, the boom of the “roaring twenties,” followed by the great depression, followed by the rise of the “baby boomers.” In true Yankee-style, Americans released music from the grand opera houses and gilded concert halls common in Europe, and spread it everywhere.

The Chamber’s Government Affairs Committee visited in Olympia with 35th District Legislators on February 25, reiterating the Chamber’s 2014 priorities: 1) Do no harm to business; 2) Focus state government before asking for new revenue; 3) Reform the worker’s compensation system; and 4) protect Mason County’s resource industry jobs.
Taxes
At different points during the session, Democratic proposals to increase taxes on bottled water, recycled fuel, prescription drugs, e-cigarettes, and to eliminate the sales tax exemption for out-of-state shoppers appeared to be moving forward, but in the end, none of these came to pass. “Like any compromise, there were things in the budget I did not like. But, I did appreciate that everyone sat at the table and was able to reach a responsible and sustainable spending plan that balances over four years,” said Rep. Drew MacEwen (R-Union).
Transportation
Despite broad support among the construction industry and business community, the Legislature did not reach agreement on a statewide transportation funding package. The Senate Majority Coalition Caucus remained firm that any revenue package would have to come with reforms and changes to the way the Department of Transportation does business.
Regulatory Reform
Once again, the House Democratic Leadership refused to consider additional reforms to Washington’s workers’ compensation system despite support from the Senate Majority Coalition Caucus.
On the positive side, the Legislature passed a bill that will ensure greater transparency when it comes to permit processing by requiring state agencies to publicly post permitting times. In addition, a bill sponsored by Sen. Tim Sheldon (D-Potlatch) passed that extends an existing tax credit for developers who would like to build low-income housing in unincorporated urban-growth areas. The credit previously applied to counties and cities with populations over 350,000 and this bill allows rural areas the same benefit. “This would give people the opportunity to live in the same area as where they work; there is a tremendous need for new affordable housing in Mason County,” said Sen. Sheldon. The bill also received the support of Reps. Haigh & MacEwen.
Minimum Wage
In addition to the looming transportation discussion, minimum wage is certain to remain at the forefront looking forward to the 2015 legislative session. In his State of the State Address in January, Governor Jay Inslee called for a significant hike to approximately $12/hour. Just a few weeks ago, on April 14, activists filed a Seattle city charter amendment to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour starting Jan. 1, 2015. The measure calls for a three-year phasein for small business (250 or fewer full-time employees). During the Chamber Government Affairs Committee’s visit to Olympia on February 25, Rep. Kathy Haigh warned the delegation that the business community should “get used to the idea” of a minimum wage hike and she predicted that an increase would likely pass if put to a vote of the people.

Protect an Important Asset – Your Identity Mike Oliver | Mutual of Omaha
Identity theft is one of the fastest growing white-collar crimes in the United States – two major factors fueling this fire are the rise in credit applications over the Internet and the tremendous proliferation of credit cards. Identity theft occurs when someone uses your specific identifying information, such as your Social Security number, to acquire goods or services in your name. A thief can use basic personal information, along with a false address, to get credit cards and other forms of identification, such as a driver’s license. When any of these events occur, an identity has been stolen. Typically, the majority of damage is done very quickly, sometimes within days, before the victim is even aware of a problem.
Identity thieves act fast Identity thieves will: • • • •
Open a new credit card account, using your name, date of birth and Social Security number. When they use the credit card and don’t pay the bills, the delinquent account is reported on your credit report. Call your credit card issuer and, pretending to be you, change the mailing address on your credit card account. Then, your imposter runs up charges on your account. Because your bills are being sent to the new address, you may not immediately realize there’s a problem. Establish cellular phone service in your name. Open a bank account in your name and write bad checks on that account.
Safeguard your identity
You can safeguard your identity through these precautions: • • • • • • • • •
Don’t carry your Social Security card, birth certificate or passport in your purse or wallet, except when needed. Don’t print your Social Security or driver’s license number on checks. Sign credit cards immediately. Keep photocopies of the front and back of credit cards in a safe location. This will help cancel the cards if stolen. Don’t leave receipts from credit cards, back accounts or ATM transactions lying in the open. Shred mailings that include unused financial solicitations such as pre-approved credit cards. Make sure your mailbox is secure and remove mail as soon as it arrives. Don’t provide Social Security or credit card numbers over the telephone or Internet unless you’ve initiated the contact. Contact a major credit reporting company at least annually to review your file. Should identity theft occur, notify credit card companies immediately; if the credit card is reported missing before charges are made, the cardholder owes nothing. If you suspect someone is using your Social Security number, contact the Social Security Administration at (800) 269-0271.

Chamber springs into beautification What do Shelton’s spring flower baskets and Christmas decorations have in common? They are both programs supported by the Shelton-Mason County Chamber of Commerce to beautify our community. The lovely flower baskets that grace our streets for the summer months would not be possible without your support. Individual sponsors and the business community have taken responsibility for the costs associated with the installation and upkeep of the flower baskets, streetlight banners, and Christmas decorations. Donations can be made towards the collective project – or – individual flower baskets may also be sponsored for $200 each. The $200 offsets the cost of materials and maintenance for the season. Donors may choose to sponsor a basket in honor of a special someone or in memoriam of a loved one. The committee’s fundraising effort has already begun by contacting businesses, service organizations, employee associations, and reaching out to the greater community. There is a tremendous cost associated with beautifying our community.
Because this is such a large and important community-wide project, the Chamber is asking for everyone’s involvement to assist with financial support to install and maintain the flower baskets and street banners. If you would like more information on this effort or would like to donate, please contact the Chamber at info@sheltonchamber.org or (360) 426-2021. Please send any financial contributions to the Chamber’s office at PO Box 2389 Shelton, WA 98584. Gifts of any amount are appreciated! Additional details are available online at www. sheltonchamber.org/beautification or you may contact any of the following committee members directly: Jill Himlie (Chair), Steve Andrewski, Patti Case, Virginia McCarty, Ron Pannell, and John Tarrant.

Cresting the hill northward on 101 returning to Shelton gives me goosebumps. The majestic line of towering mountains reminds me of why we were drawn to set roots in Mason County. Spectacular ranges with forests laced with trails and recreation areas; unspoiled waterways – teeming with life – all reasons to be filled with pride. It’s easy to pack your days with fun, free things to do in Mason County, whether you thrill at experiencing unique community festivals or the great outdoors – pick an adventure and start making memories! A day’s exploration of the Olympic National Forest, literally in our backyard, can take you from breathtaking mountain vistas with meadows of wildflowers to colorful ocean tide-pools. The southern portion of Hood Canal near Hoodsport provides recreation opportunities near Lake Cushman, the Hamma Hamma and South Fork
Skokomish Rivers, and provides access to Wonder Mountain, Mount Skokomish and the southern part of The Brothers Wildernesses. High elevation lakes such as Elk, Jefferson, Lena, or Mildred Lakes provide opportunities for camping and fishing. Take a short hike within old growth forest around Spider Lake, or climb the challenging Mt. Rose Trail for views of Hood Canal, the Olympics, and the Cascades. Exploring in your backyard
excerpt from WA State Parks: adventureawaits.com
STOP #1: Jarrell Cove State Park
sits on the northwest end of Harstine Island. A marine camping park that lies off the beaten path of the regular Puget Sound tourist route. Walk around and check out the forest paths, docks and rolling, grassy areas. For an extra hike, Harstine Island State Park is a two-mile drive south of Jarrell Cove.
STOP #2: Backtrack to WA-3 North
and follow it all the way to Belfair. Take a left onto WA-300 West, after a few miles, Belfair State Park will be on your left. It’s a 65-acre camping park on the southern end of Hood Canal.
Best known for saltwater tide flats, wetlands with wind-blown beach grasses and salmon runs up Big Mission Creek in the fall. Spend a few hours exploring, maybe even flying kites along the shore. The kids can work up an appetite playing on the beach or climbing all over the playground.
STOP #3: Once you’re ready, head
back to Belfair for food. There are plenty of options, including a few bakeries for sweet treats. Or get your food to go and picnic at the stop. continued page 26

STOP #4: Head east on WA-300
until it meets up with WA-3 South. After about 1.5 miles turn right onto WA-106 W. Situated on the shoreline of Hood Canal, Twanoh State Park has one of the warmest saltwater beaches in Washington state. The log shelters built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s and the coastal forest trails available here make for a road trip any season of the year. Love oysters? Beds at the park are seeded annually for year-round harvesting. Just be sure to visit the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife website for rules and regulations - and to buy your license – before you go. Ready to stretch your legs? Hike out on the trail look along Twanoh Creek. The area was logged in the 1890s. As you make your way through the forest, watch for the springboard notches that were carved into the cedar trees by loggers in those old times.
STOP #5: Make an extra stop just
a little farther up the Olympic Peninsula side of Hood Canal to one more state park destination: Potlatch State Park. With 57-acres, this little camping park looks out to Anna’s Bay and the tip of Kitsap Peninsula. In the spring, it’s a shell-fishing hub, due to the availability of oysters and easy access to clamming beds. There’s even a crabbing area. For this trip, walk on the beach and take in the scenic views of Hood Canal. It’s another great place for flying kites and windsurfing. Have your scuba diving gear with you? Potlatch is a favorite with divers. Get a close-up look at the creatures that live in Puget Sound waters. Kayak out in the Sound for a little more paddling fun. Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife Crabbing is one of Puget Sound’s most popular recreational fisheries. Each year, sport fishers catch more than a million pounds of Dungeness crab, using pots, ring nets and – in the case of wade and dive fishers – their bare hands. While recreational crab fishing is now close for Marine Area 12 (Hood Canal), it is currently projected to open on Thursday July 3, 2014 with opening dates announced in May. Once opened for the summer season, crabbing is only allowed Thursdays through Mondays each week (closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays).
In addition to meeting licensing requirements, everyone who fishes for crab in Puget Sound must carry and complete catch record cards to account for all Dungeness crab they catch. For recent changes in the reporting system now in effect, updated information, and fishing rules, see WDFW’s Recreational Crab Fishing website at wdfw.wa.gov/fishing/ shellfish/crab.
Did you know?
A female crab has a beehive on its belly; a male crab has a lighthouse – the females must be released back to the water to make more crabs!
Ties to our local waterways Rachel Hansen | BIGHT Editor
When our family moved to Mason County, we came for the space, the water and for the tides. With two small energetic boys in tow, we were excited about the opportunities for recreation. Little did we know how much our lives would be controlled by those very tides. This January I was asked to be a speaker at local aquaculture conference. It was a great honor – in January. By March when I realized the speaking date was just days away, it was terrifying! My topic was “Integrating Tourism into Aquaculture.” Yes, that’s a real topic. I began to prepare my presentation with a cursory glance at tourism – attractions, lodging, transportation and access. I compiled my statistics a pattern began to form. A formula that was beginning to prove that Mason County’s untapped assets could be likened to unmined gold, proving – as always – what is common to one is a treasure to others.
I knew more than I thought I did. Raised in a remote coastal fishing lodge off British Columbia I have been tied to tourism and aquaculture since my beginnings. As a teenager digging clams meant cold fingers, wet boots and soaking knees as mud ran up your rainpants. Oysters represented winter tides with the cold wet blackness pierced by the Coleman lantern’s glowing fragile mantle. I disliked those hours on the beach. I feigned sleep in my warm bed as my sister tried to shake me awake to keep my daytime promises of helping her dig or gather.
Decades later the joke is on me. The very oysters I resisted are laughing at me from the beach in front of our house on Hammersly Inlet. As we fill our weekly orders of 500 dozen, I have come to realize that we actually searched out this way of life out. What does this have to do with tourism? Imagine the coldest night in November – at low tide. To the shores of Totten Inlet, Taylor Shellfish delivers a sold out busload from as far afield as Portland. The crowd eagerly dons rubber boots and raingear for the “ultimate oyster-eating experience, one by which all others will be judged.”
27
The event is best described by their online ticket listing: “The “picnic” takes place by lantern and/or moon light on Taylor’s Totten Inlet oyster bed at night in the middle of the winter. An icy gust of wind off the bay might invigorate the experience. Plump, sweet, perky oysters, just rousted from their beds and opened on the spot and award-wining “oyster wines” served in Reidel stemware close at hand. When the tide starts coming in, there is a bonfire and a cup of Xinh Dwelley’s hot oyster stew before getting back on the bus.” continued next page

Did I mention the cost was $125? Granted paired wines are served in Reidel stemware and Xihn’s stew would get me out of my blankets any night – and the proceeds are for a good cause – but we are talking middle of the night deep in a Northwest winter here, people! Taylor Shellfish is very wise. The Walrus and the Carpenter Picnic is a result of a keen understanding of their market. If you just want wine, buy a box. If you want the best wine, buy the experience and pay the price. Their event is a self-proclaimed “just the right mix of magic and madness.” And magic it is. Today’s tourists do not like to be considered “tourists.” They desire the experience. The opportunity to make memories, participate, and ultimately be educated.

As I dug into the research to support my presentation I was thrilled to find that all over in the world in aquaculture there were pockets of magic where operators, restaurants, and even whole regions had come together in a cooperative effort to design “aquaculture” experiences for “visitors” (we won’t call them tourists anymore). South Australia’s very successful Aquaculture Trail maps a path to “self drive or visit the aquaculture farms, fishing boats and old fishing ports on organized tours.” Visitors are led between adventures with enticing and tasty verbiage – who wouldn’t want to “visit an oyster shed and taste seafood from the waters of the Great Australian Bight in Streaky Bay, home to the green-lipped abalone.” Back to the gold. It is not our fancy hotels, sandy beaches and terrific weather that sets us apart, but look around. Cradled by thousands of acres of lush evergreen forests, in the shadow of the breathtaking Olympic range and wrapped with hundreds of lakes and a myriad of saltwater coves and inlets – Mason County is truly remarkable. Our aquaculture industry is a key player as one of our most valuable attractions. There I stood, mic in hand, in front of a room filled with farmers and biologists who knew their industry better than anyone, talking my industry – tourism. As I nervously tried to remember my name I felt sudden strength in the realization that I had to convince them not because their industry depended on it, but because mine did. Mason County does not have the most wineries or the grandest hotels. There are no amusement parks or outlet malls. Nor should it continue to known solely as the “gateway” to the Olympics.

Surrounded by the most spectacular scenery and hosted by genuine people, this piece of the Northwest is the destination. Our industries and livelihoods are the attractions. It is not just the waterways filled with living, breathing, filtering and economy building bivalves; it is also the rich heritage that shared these waterways – the first peoples, the settlers, the timber industry. These are all valuable assets in setting Mason County apart from the other destinations. How many places can you go to a State Park and gather your own oysters to cook on the campfire. Um – no where. Our little beach on Hammersly filled with racks of tumbling oysters is insignificant compared to Taylor or Hama Hama, but I shall pretend that our small voice counts. I will continue to advocate for the industry to create our own Aquaculture Trail for Mason County so that you can bring your families for night bonfires on our beach with cups of hot chocolate in paper cups. We’ll serve you oysters and clams roasted in butter and, after marsh mallows, we will jig for squid as they come to the glow of the Coleman lantern. Why? Because memories are so precious you never know when you are making them; and the most precious involve “just the right mix of magic and madness.” Remember to visit an oyster farm soon. Catch you on the tide!

Hood Canal is a unique fjord - with plentiful and colorful wildlife diversity. Thanks to some amazing and accessible protected preserves, scuba divers travel from all over to visit these nutrient rich waters to explore the crevasses and rocks! Giant octopi, friendly & curious wolf eels and swarms of ancient rock cod add to the wonder of this special place. Want to try? Scuba lessons, rentals, boat charters are available in Hoodsport. Head to the shores
Come prepared with buckets, boots, and crab pots, to delight in the fresh briny catch that can be harvested seasonally in the Sound and Canal. Warm weather is a less than desirable time to harvest shellfish. Stay away from the months without an “R” if you are uncertain. When in doubt, purchase from one of the local harvesters instead. Watch for posted signs. With a saltwater canal at its center, Mason County is rich in boating opportunities. An abundant number of marinas means you’ll spend less time getting there, and more time on the water. The Port of Hoodsport dock is available for public use. There are boat slips available, overnight moorage is available at $10/slip/night.
Twanoh State Park offers a ramp and dock. A launching permit for $7 and trailer permit for $5 may be purchased at the park. The park also provides moorage. Fees are charged year round for mooring at docks, floats and buoys. Daily and annual permits are available. Need to rent a boat? Alderbrook Resort, Union Paddle and Row, Lake Cushman Resort, and North Bay Kayaks offer a variety including paddle and motor boats.
SPOT the shrimp on Hood Canal!
This year’s shrimp seasons are similar to 2013 with a few exceptions, said Mark O’Toole, a shellfish biologist for WDFW. “We have slightly lower quotas in Hood Canal and Discovery Bay,” O’Toole said. “We will reopen the areas later if sufficient quota remains.” Spot shrimp, also known as prawns, are the largest shrimp in Puget Sound and may grow to nine inches in length. Fishers are limited to 80 spot shrimp per day and a valid fishing license is required. Hood Canal (Marine Area 12) is open from 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM on May 3, 7, 10 and 21.
For a description of the marine areas and fishing rules, see WDFW’s website at wdfw.wa.gov/fishing/ shellfish/shrimp.
