“The Chamber is like Jello. Everyone knows what it is, but nobody knows just what it is.” This statement struck me at a recent conference. Are we telling our story? Do people know what we do and who we are? At times, I feel like the Chamber is doing a good job sharing the important things we are doing on behalf of our community. It’s typically just after I’ve thought so that someone asks, “Aren’t you a government entity?!” No, the Chamber is not a government entity, we are a business organization – the majority of our funding comes from businesses investing in our mission through annual membership dues. “Well, don’t you get a bunch of government funding?” No, not for our day-to-day functions. We do receive government funding to supplement the cost of our visitor information centers, the lion’s share of which supports the former Hoodsport Ranger Station at the base of Lake Cushman Road. I also sometimes hear (though not as often as in the past), “I don’t have time to be a Chamber member.” While we do host luncheons and networking events, the primary focus of the Chamber is to make it easier for business owners to be successful. We do this by monitoring and alerting them to possible regulation and taxes, changes to reporting criteria, and offering training and resources that can make their life easier.This allows our business owners and managers to focus on their business without having to worry about what’s happening around them.

This year there are already several items we know will directly affect our businesses. Much of my attention has been following and providing feedback on the rulemaking for I-1433 addressing minimum wage and paid time off (PTO). While the minimum wage aspect was clearly outlined in the initiative, only portions of implementing PTO were addressed. As part of the rulemaking process, Department of Labor & Industries partners with business organizations, labor unions, workers’ rights associations and others to garner input. For instance, the initial draft language said that “An employer may not require [an] employee find a replacement worker to cover the hours during which the employee is using paid sick leave.” However, the draft didn’t address whether an employee was allowed to swap shifts with another employee and how that might work. The most recent draft now makes room for that saying, “Upon mutual agreement… an employee may trade shifts with another employee.” It seems so obvious to some employees, especially those in hospitality positions, while it would likely never cross the minds of regular 9-to-5 employees. I also recently attended a Small Business Forum at L & I which touched on several different areas. Federal Trade Commission talked about the cyber security

risks small businesses face and offered tips for responding to a data breach. The Better Business Bureau presented free tools, presentations, and the resources they provide for individuals, agencies, and businesses. Emergency Management Division’s Private Sector Program shared how to connect small and medium sized businesses to resources to aid in disaster preparedness, response, recovery and mitigation, while Workers’ Comp shared information about a new law making it easier for businesses to provide cover volunteers. Not only did I garner useful information but great contacts were made.

The Chamber now has a direct line to a number of different state agencies. Better yet, these new contacts are ready and willing to provide training and resources to our members. That was a day well spent.

One of the greatest gifts you can give is your time. The willingness to volunteer today seems to be on the decline, but I am thankful for the many Chamber volunteers who defy that trend. It is the leadership of our volunteers that direct and support the successes of the Chamber. Our thirteen board members represent the different industries, locations, etc. that make up our diverse membership. The elected Board is charged with of all of the affairs of the association and the management of all of its property and funds. I would like to personally extend my thanks to every Board member for their dedication and service.

Beyond the Chamber's Board, we are blessed with a community of volunteers who are willing to help whenever and however they can. If you find research, government, or public policy interesting then you may wish to join the Government Relations Committee (GRC). As the voice of business in Mason County, the Chamber relies heavily on the GRC to monitor and facilitate discussion and forward recommendations to the Board about local, state, and federal government issues that impact our Mason County community. To learn more, please contact GRC Chair and Board Liaison Lisa Perry of Sierra Pacific Industries. However, if you prefer to connect with local schools and examine member benefits, the Member Services Committee (MSC) may be a good fit. MSC assists staff with developing and implementing member benefit programs, adding value to members’ investment. MSC has also become the spearhead for all educational partnerships like the Lemonade Day entrepreneurship curriculum. To get involved, contact VP Karen Schade of Edward Jones. If you are a people person, our Ambassadors group is the place to be! Ambassadors act as the "welcome wagon" to new businesses in town and serve as wingmen for new members to the Chamber.

Our Ambassadors are highly involved, attending the majority of Chamber functions where they greet guests, provide a friendly face, and promote networking between Chamber members, new and old. And if you are a mover and shaker who loves to put on a party with a purpose, consider joining an event committee. The Chamber hosts four major events annually, each of which raises friends or funds to further the Chamber’s reach. The Chamber is truly a community organization supported and driven by our community volunteers. The great thing is we have plenty of room for all who are willing to help. I greatly appreciate all of those willing to serve on a committee or help out at an event. We are lucky to have different people willing to jump in and help. Thank You! Chamber Sets Stage for 2017 Annual

COMMUNITY & BUSINESS EXPO & BITE OF MASON COUNTY Have you always wanted to try out that corner restaurant? Want to talk to a roofer about doing a job? How about talking to a neighbor about insurance and investment options? And what about the fashions from that darling boutique? Does a high energy block party with businesses and community organizations drawing on showmanship and flair to get your attention while sharing what makes their business so dynamic sound like a fun to you?  You will find all that and more at the Community & Business Expo and Bite of Mason County. The Expo is the largest business & restaurant event in Mason County, attended by thousands of community members each year. The event will be held on Thursday, July 20 from 11:00 AM - 6:00 PM; admission and parking are free to the public. Vendor registration is now open online or at the Chamber office. The Expo always boasts a wide variety of interactive activities, food samples showcasing local restaurants and caterers, as well as a beer and wine garden to sample local spirits and more.

Collectively, there will be dozens upon dozens of businesses and non-profits in the same place at the same time!   As always, the community is called to vote for their favorites to receive the coveted "Golden Fork" and "Best Booth" awards. Voting will take place on site and, if last year was any indication, the competition will be intense. April Showers Continues Tradition Along

Shores of Mason Lake Thinking of the Pacific Northwest brings to mind images of rain, shellfish, and waterfronts - so it makes sense to have a festival celebrating all of these. The Chamber’s 2nd Annual April Showers celebration was held on Saturday, April 29 at the Mason Lake Recreation Area and was a perfect showcase of our outdoor games and activities, seafood, live music, and ice cold drinks. Kicking off shortly after noon with the musical stylings of Rock & Roll cover band The Lady Drinks Whiskey, guests played at lawn games, explored the lake with Blue Horizons Paddlesports, and the young (and young at heart!) were delighted playing with bubbles and having their faces painted. Local fare highlighted the unique culinarians and bounty of quality ingredients in the Pacific Northwest. There was something to delight every palette. Union City Market iced down Hood Canal Oyster Shooters with an array of handcrafted toppings and they poured frosty root beer over Olympic Mt. Ice Cream for those with a sweet tooth. Big flavors from a charming space, Union Country Store grilled Cajun-kissed shrimp skewers, melt-in-your-mouth prime rib dips and (a crowd favorite!) prime rib wrapped oysters. Not to be outdone, Senior Services for South Sound’s fresh pork and shrimp spring rolls with peanut dipping sauce proffered a lighter fare.

Local favorite The Varmints performed classics and held down the stage until the event wrapped up, just as the raindrops began to fall and campers moseyed back towards their sites. All in all, it was a fabulous day at the lake. This event was made possible thanks to Gold Sponsor Columbia Bank, Souvenir Sponsor Penninsula Credit Union, and Band Sponsor Our Community Credit Union, and with contributory media support provided by the SheltonMason County Journal. And, in between the hefty plates, Shelton Cinemas' buttery popcorn and El Sarape Cantina’s housemade chips, salsa, and guacamole were strewn from end to end on nearly every table. Rounding out the menu was hearty fare from LC3 Bar & Grill, who served up Reuben sandwiches, hot dogs with all the fixins, and their famous loaded baked potato salad alongside cold, refreshing beverages. Hoodsport Visitor Information Center served nearly 20,000 in 2016

STORY

wish you were here. In 2016, the Chamber served nearly 20,000 people at the Visitor Information Center in Hoodsport. For that, we have more than 20 volunteers to thank for their service. The team is lead by husband and wife dynamic duo, Mark and Sam Franklin. Sam’s face lights up as she speaks of the volunteers, “I just love the way our local people find ways to enhance visitors experiences in our beautiful area.” Are visitor information centers still important in this era of readily accessible internet and GPS? “You bet!” she says. “In addition to the hundreds of visitors who come through our doors each week, there is always someone, usually from a foreign country, who has driven from Seattle to Hoodsport and are absolutely stunned at how huge the Olympic Peninsula is.” Many set out early, planning to do the 300+ mile loop and be back to Seattle in time for dinner. Inevitably, it is explained that they will need to revise their plans. “We’ve developed itineraries that are very doable in a day that gives them a taste of the mountains, ocean, and forest that they hope to see.”

The next stop is an 11-mile drive north to Big Creek Loop Trail in the Olympic National Forest or even 5-miles further to Olympic National Park Staircase entrance. Both offer short, family-friendly walks under canopies of old growth trees, traversing wooden bridges spanning sparkling rivers. Come back down the hill and enjoy the quirky shops and public pier in Hoodsport before you continue north on Hwy 101 for a gorgeous drive along the canal and through the forest about 30 miles to Mt. Walker. You can drive or hike to the mountain top where on a clear day you can see Mt. Rainier, Mt. Baker, Seattle, and Buckhorn Mountain.

Itineraries are tailored, depending on the desired experience of each visitor. One of the most popular routes is a local day trip starting at Potlatch State Park with a walk along the salt water of the Hood Canal. At low tide you can enjoy the tide pools and the sea life teeming along the shoreline.

On you way back down the canal, stop by the Hama Hama Oyster Company for a true Pacific Northwest experience. There you can enjoy a glass of wine while shooting oysters at their seasonally-open saloon. You can also pick up smoked salmon, shellfish, oyster knives, Olympic Mt. Ice Cream and more.

“If you have guests in town or if it’s just been a while since you’ve spent time in our back yard, stop at our visitor center and we’ll customize an itinerary just for you,” Sam says. “Our volunteers will help you build a day full of memories. We’ll even give you the best places to stop for lunch!” The Hoodsport Visitor Center is located at the base of Lake Cushman Road in the old Ranger Station office, located at 150 N Lake Cushman Rd, Hoodsport. May through September, their hours of operation are 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM, Monday through Thursday; 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM, Friday and Saturday; and 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM, Sunday. On May 24 the flower baskets that grace our streets for the summer season were hung with care just in time for Forest Festival weekend, thanks to the Chamber, Hood Canal Communications, and Shelton Kiwanis Club. The Chamber and its partners collaborate to beautify our community in the summer with a flowery, cheerful welcome and in the winter by displaying the Christmas street light ornaments. There is a tremendous cost associated with beautifying our community and the entire project is funded by community donations. No tax dollars are allocated towards these projects and all donations go directly to the beautification program. You can help! Gifts made to the beautification program provide for the upkeep of the flower baskets, streetlight banners, and Christmas decorations. Summer flower baskets may be sponsored for $225 each which offsets the cost of purchasing and maintaining one flower basket for the season. You may choose to sponsor a basket in the name of a business, an individual, or in memoriam of a loved one.

You can even choose which basket you'd like to sponsor from a list of available locations. New this year, we are also offering flower baskets for purchase to do with as you please. The cost for these flower baskets are just $150. Please call the Chamber for availability as there are only a limited number available. Gifts of any amount are appreciated! Waterfall Wonders

by Mason County’s explorehoodcanal.com It’s undeniable that cascading waterfalls tucked into hidden nooks are simply and quintessentially Hood Canal. Though winter and early spring are optimal for peeping these rushing beauties, there's still plenty to see in the summertime. As the rain falls, it keeps our hillsides the vibrant green that makes the Olympic Peninsula feel like home. This also means the waters rise and the Cascades fill in. So check the forecast, grab your best adventure buddies, and get to some of the most beautiful gems that Hood Canal has to offer. Situated just north of Brinnon, Rocky Brook Falls remains one of the best easy-toreach waterfalls on the Olympic Peninsula. After a 1986 micro hydro project was installed at the top of the falls, locals feared that the falls would run dry. Thanks to operators of the facility, the beautiful 229’ tall falls run year-round. For the waterfall nerds out there, Rocky Brook’s primary form is in tiered horsetails, with three thundering drops until it reaches the small pool below. Upon arriving at Rocky Creek, park just beyond the small bridge and follow the trail that leads past the hydro facility for about

500 feet. Note that the rocks around the pool can be slick, especially when wet, so it’s best to exercise caution.

from any one location and it is advised to exercise extreme caution when trying to gain a better downstream view.

Little is written about Hamma Hamma Falls, and visiting them requires a fair bit of exploring. Over the years, a number of the most intrepid kayakers have ventured to the Olympic Peninsula in order to run these falls. The boiling pool at the bottom of its pristine and highly technical 25’ first drop gives paddlers just enough time to set up for the 50’ drop immediately after. A concrete bridge spans the river over the falls at the fall line of the upper drop, but an adventure-seeker will need to navigate the lower banks to get a full-frontal view of this beauty.

No waterfall itinerary would be complete without a trip to the historic High Steel Bridge that spans the gorge and sits a staggering 300’ above the mighty South Fork of the Skokomish River. The vertigo-inducing High Steel Bridge has an uncontested view of the last cascade on the itinerary, Vincent Creek Falls, and is easily accessed from Hwy 101. It’s also a quick pit stop after an awesome wintery afternoon of mountain biking if you happen to visit the area on a dry-ish day.

Just three miles downstream, Lower Hamma Hamma Falls is the slightly-lessmajestic sister to the beaut upstream. Dropping into a small gorge, the falls tumble over a large pile of boulders. As such, it’s difficult to see the whole falls

Celebrate Your Nordic Roots at Hoodsport's

Located in Hoodsport, the Hardware Distillery is just steps from the shores of Hood Canal. The basement, where they age their whiskey, opens up on to the canal, so that the barrels can breathe the fresh salt air. Opening the door to the distillery your senses are greeted with a wave of sensations. The rich fermenting aroma is second only to the thoughtful artwork that adorns the space. All of which are overshadowed by the warm welcome of owners, Jan and Chuck. Chuck, also chief distiller, is happy to offer an impromptu tour. Jan is quick to answer questions and provide samples of their award winning blends. One of the distillery’s recent specialties is aquavit. “Many customers, who are new to the distillery in Hoodsport, have not heard of aquavit,” remarked Jan, “for many aquavit is confused with tequila.” With their Scandinavian roots, Jan and Chuck are determined to make an aquavit that can introduce this tradition to the Northwest. Aquavit is an important part of Scandinavian culture, and is often a staple during festivals and holidays. Traditionally it is made from grain or potatoes and spices and herbs are added to make it aquavit.

A traditional Norwegian aquavit is the Linje aquavit. Legend contends that many years ago a ship with aquavit barrels was sent to Australia but the barrels were denied and returned to Norway. In the journey the equator (“linje”) was crossed twice before bottling the spirit and it was firmly believed that the rocking motion of the ship made the aquavit taste better. To this day, barrels of linje aquavit journey across the equator. The distillery is planning to create their own local version of this journey with the Hood Canal crossing – FjordinCrossin. “We will launch Chuck,” plans Jan Morris, “on Lee Geist's boat with a barrel of our aquavit. They will travel from Hoodsport across the fjord to Tahuya.” The Twanoh will depart Hoodsport around 11:00 AM followed by a flotilla of paddlers – Paddle the Canal and a day of celebration. As part of FjordinCrossin, Hood Canal Events (Union) will sponsor Paddle the Canal, a family event for those who wish to join the “Crossin” in a non-motorized boat, kayak, canoe, or paddle board. Five years ago Chuck and Jan Morris cashed in their retirement funds, mortgaged their home in Seattle, and headed to Hoodsport where the water is uncommonly good. They purchased the old hardware store in the center of Hoodsport and started a distillery – The Hardware Distillery Co.

The paddle race will include a swag bag from local sponsors and great prizes will be awarded to 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and best team finishers along with tons of fun and festivities! There will be activities for the whole family including kids' activities and intertidal touch tanks. A variety of food includes Scandanavian specialties from Tumble Swede, grilled and fresh oysters, a NW soup specialty provided by the Union City Market, and other local restaurants and sidewalk vendors. Samples of aquavit and aquavit cocktails will be available at the distillery. The Lady Alderbrook will be departing from the Alderbrook dock. The cost will be $35 for a 2–hour excursion to watch the festivities. Aquavit will be served to toast the launching of the barrel. Crabbing on Hood Canal Opens June 24 Crabbing is one of Puget Sound’s most popular recreational fisheries. Each year, sport fishers catch more than a million pounds of Dungeness crab using pots, ring nets and – in the case of wade and dive fishers – their bare hands. The season opens on June 24 for Hood Canal (Marine Area 12) and is scheduled to close September 4. In addition to meeting licensing requirements, everyone who fishes for crab in Puget Sound must carry and complete catch record cards to account for all Dungeness crab they catch. Like shellfish? Then the Washington Shellfish Trail is where to start your next journey. Volunteers are working with folks that grow, cook, and display shellfish to create a trail that you can follow to explore shellfish. Similar to the wine trails of Eastern Washington, the trail will bring you from the Columbia River north to the Canadian border and explore not only Washington’s famous oysters, but also clams, geoducks, and mussels. Visit farms, gather your own shellfish off public beaches, and attend events that embrace this resource, like Hama Hama’s Oyster Rama or the State Park’s Shellfest. The Washington Shellfish Trail will guide you on your journey. Understanding the role of shellfish in our communities is essential to the long-term health of our shellfish resources. The trail will emphasize the interconnectedness of aquaculture within our rural communities and the value of shellfish to our well being.

The trail's options are endless and build upon the other Washington trail systems such as the Strait of Juan de Fuca Scenic Byway. All of the stops will have specific

Chamber to Host Candidate Forum July 13

At 6:00 PM on Thursday, July 13, the Shelton-Mason County Chamber of Commerce will host a Candidate Forum for those running for City of Shelton Commissioner of Streets and Public Improvement. The forum will provide each candidate the opportunity for a self-introduction, to answer pre-determined questions, and to ask a question of their opponents. Candidates include incumbent Tracy Moore who has a background supporting historic preservation, working for nonprofit organizations, and serving on volunteer boards. Local businessman Eric Onisko has been a Mason County resident for more than 40 years and owns Bayshore Texaco and recently acquired the Hillcrest Shell Station. Kevin Dorcy is a lifelong resident of Mason County and is a small business owner who began as a contractor and now owns Urraco Coffee. Rounding out

the slate of candidates is Jacob Dreifus, a freshman at South Puget Sound Community College and graduate of Kent-Meridian High School. Pancakes with a Purpose

Pancakes in the Park is nearly here! A tradition begun by the Shelton Kiwanis Club in 1949, today nearly 1,000 guests attend the fun, family-friendly event each year. On the last Sunday of July at Kneeland Park the community is invited to attend the all-you-can-eat breakfast of pancakes, scrambled eggs, and breakfast meats complete with coffee service. There is even a book van with free childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s books and live entertainment.

For the first year, pancakes, waffles, ham and/or bacon, and eggs any way you wanted them were offered. It was so much trouble with power and long lines that the menu was streamlined. The novel pancake machine was built in 1955 by volunteer labor with material donated by ITT Rayonier Laboratory. Until the 1990s, the club used the metal flatware and cooked eggs in large aluminum pans which all had to be washed by hand. You can imagine the size of the dishwashing crew! Breakfast fixings were prepared at one of the local grade schools for more than 30 years. The school principal and Kiwanians would cook ham, make coffee, and drive it all the way to the park. Event advertising gimmicks of the past were priceless. Kiwanians stopped a working train on Railroad Avenue to serve pancakes (stopping traffic in the process), used cement trucks to "hold the batter," and even tossed paper plates with event details from an airplane!

General admission tickets are $8.50 each and are good for one adult or two children under ten. There is also a $20 family ticket which is good for two adults and two kids under 10. Advance ticket purchases are available online or you can simply pay admission at the gate. Proceeds from Pancakes in the Park benefit local youth leadership programs such as Key Club and Cub Scouts, recreational sports and extracurricular activities, student recognition programs in local schools, scholarships for graduating SHS seniors, support City parks, the Catalyst Park Community & Food Bank Garden, and much more.
